Rangers and Front Office hear fans wrath after 5-1 loss to Hurricanes

pride: noun

1.     A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect.

rock bottom: noun

1.     The lowest possible level or absolute bottom:

So we thought "Ok, they lost to the Flyers, got pushed around badly, they'll be angry and take it out on Montreal." Didn't happen. But surely after being embarrassed and serenaded out of the Bell Centre in Montreal, they would come home and right the ship against the worst team in hockey?

3:36 into the game, we knew we were wrong again.

The Rangers were outworked, outhustled, and outclassed again last night, losing 5-1 to the 15th place Carolina Hurricanes.

Henrik Lundqvist gave up two soft goals in the first few minutes of the game, and with this team's shaken confidence and fragile psyche, two goal deficits are currently insurmountable.

You guys saw this mess, I'm not going to waste your time by recapping it. You have better things to do than read a recap of the debacle took place at MSG tonight. So instead let's talk about a few things:

  • Go back and read the definition of the word "pride". Where is it on this team right now? Where is the sense of self-respect? Where is the attitude of "we're sick and tired of embarrassing ourselves"?
  • When does someone on this team besides Hank get mad? Truly mad? Avery was interviewed in between periods, and looked downtrodden. Understandable, but we also know he has a ton of fire in his belly, and I think this team needs to see it.
  • Speaking of Henrik, I think he is mentally wiped out. The pressure of carrying this team night after night after night after night after night has left him drained. The Rangers should send him on vacation until Sunday's game in Colorado. He needs a break, a real one.
  • The optimist in me (I really want to punch him in the throat sometimes) says maybe this trip out west is just what the Rangers need, to get away from everything and play hockey.
  • The pessimist in me says we haven't seen the true definition of "rock bottom" yet.

POST-GAME QUOTES

John Tortorella on the upcoming schedule…

"You have to make your own luck.  It is an unforgiving week.  No one is going to feel sorry for you.  The best thing for us is to get out of town.  We have to regroup as a hockey club.  You can’t be pointing a finger at your teammates.  You can’t feel sorry for yourself.  You have to grind through this.  Having gone through all of this, in the Eastern Conference, we are still right in the middle of it.  We will get on the plane tomorrow and get out west and try to regroup here.  That is the key thing, not break apart."

Ryan Callahan on the team…

"It is tough but we are all pros in here.  That is why we play this game.  We have all gone through this with another team or coming up.  We have to put this behind us and concentrate on the next game."

Henrik Lundqvist on the veteran leadership…

"Some guys might say something but for the most part it is more important that the older guys, starting with me, show it with the way we play.  We need to play better.  It is some small details that just need to be corrected.  We can turn it around.  I know we are a good team.  I know I can stop pucks.  We just need to stay confident and turn this around."

And because Henrik has been playing stellar, he was due to have an off game. Every goalie has one. But on this team, where scoring is like men at a Jonas Brothers concert, there was no hope from the beginning of winning this game.

Chants of “Fire Sather” only lightly show the frustration from us, the fans.

I started noticing it the last couple games. Even when he’s playing well he just looks downright tired. The guy needs a break. The team isn’t playing well anyway. They need to throw Zaba or Johnson in for a couple games.

best news of tonight:

TB gained 2 pts, so we are 1 pt out of 13th in the conference (3 others w 55, 3 w 54)
Min and Dal also passed us in the standings.

Its now past a “joke” . This is truly pathetic. Even Sather should be pissed that these guys are giving no effort. Clean house- no one should be untouchable- not even Hank.

Well Hank is the only one that plays consistent.
It’s only thanks to him that we’ve won this much games.

But sure. If he plays bad then he should get benched just as anyone else.

And Hank plays 5 great games and then one bad.
It’s the opposite with the rest of the team (1 great and 5 bad)

I have to agree with Jim on Henrik being drained.
It has to be frustrating for him so it’s understandable that he isnt his usual self

by SweNYRfan on Jan 28, 2010 6:36 AM EST up reply actions

Crazy!!!

Hank has missed about 4 games the whole year. He has been fantastic about 90 percent of the time. Do the people on here have any idea what it is like to play goal in that many games in 3 and a half months. If we didnt have Hank we would be getting beat by college teams in practice. He is our backbone and we all have bad days. Last night was a bad day for him and Im sure he will bounce back.

I'm sorry

But i have to disagree, Hank should be the only one who is untouchable. Yeah he had a bad night but like it was said before, he’s played the best hockey of his career in the past like before the last 2 games. Despite the fact we had 2 games that we blew out the other teams (Tampa/Montreal) he still had to play at his best cause we gave up a lot of good chances even in those games. I do like Torts and i liked Renney, but Renn was too soft and i think Torts is too hard. We need to get him to bring is level down and maybe it will bring the rangers up a bit.

by mleetch352 on Jan 28, 2010 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

wow

Lundqvist is not the problem here. Not his best game tonight but I agree he has been playing a few too many games, he should get a few days off, regardless of who has to play in his place. Nor do I think Torts is the problem. He can only use the players he has. It is not Torts’ fault that Higgins doesn’t score, that Drury doesn’t etc. He should use Avery more than 11 minutes a night. However, the team should be doing better than they are obviously. What is the ultimate answer? I believe this team needs to be imploded apart from 5 or 6 guys, and infused with youth. It’s the only real way to go.

We all know there is no way in Hell that they will rebuild like that, the Dolan Cash Machine must not be disrupted in any way at all.

This perennially being not quite good enough to win/not sucking enough to be one of the 2 or 3 worst teams in the league is the way it is. We all know this, yet we still care about the team.

Why?

And Sather gave the team a pep talk after the game? That’s like getting financial advice from Bernie Madoff. The only bright side is the worse they suck, maybe the more likely that real change will happen, especially if the Islanders make the playoffs.
I’ve supported Tortorella but clearly his edgy style has not worked. His post-game conference was the first time I’ve heard him sound truly blind, like he hadn’t seen the game. He liked their effort in the 2nd and 3rd period? Really?

What happened to...

Kotaliks slap shot, Reddens (somewhat) comeback year, Gilroy’s aggresive moves up in the play, Anisimov’s points? I really hate this, i really do. I think we should trade Grachev and Sangs while there stock is high because for ex: Dawes, Hossa, and now Anisimov had higher value in the AHL, when it doesn’t work or look like its working in the NHL there stock goes down and we get garbage in return. I say lets get something good before we hype ourselves up for dissapointment.
And dont give me Duby or Cally because they turned out good because they weren’t drafted high and play with heart game in game out, something young Russian players who play for us dont have. Heart. Lisin, Anisimov, Hossa, Zherdev, Kalinin, and Prucha….When will management learn getting guys who play with heart and pride win games, this team doesnt have it. Im so disappointed.

but really – F**k Torts, sitting Christy for 1 bad D play (really, who hasn’t slacked on D), while its obvious that he contributes on the top line – AA on the third line after he’s the only one scoring in a game? 1. Rangers end up dead last.
2. Dolan cleans house, everyone goes from top to bottom Sather to Torts, scouts, etc.
3. Dolan hires someone for GM with a clue how to evaluate free agents and the number one pick in the draft.
4. The new GM gets rid of ALL the dead wood on the team, I don’t care how.

I know it’s never going to happen, but we can always dream!

Brutal

Please dont get me wrong- I am not blaming Lundquist at all when I said he should be included in the" no one is untouchable" category. However, if this team truly is to be rebuilt, and we get 3+ young , talented already-in-the-NHL players for him that aids in the overhaul/ rebuild. However be prepared, when you start from scratch it gets real itchy at first :)

by RangerFanInChicago on Jan 28, 2010 8:00 AM EST reply actions

How to Beat the Rangers

1. ignore Sean Avery
2. defend the Gaborik line-a variation of trap-their defensement are too slow/soft to beat
3. wait for their defensemen to make a mistake or their forwards not to defend the point (the latter happens quite regularly)
4. shoot to Lundquist’s short side, preferably glove high

They need to get out of town and go back to playing basic defensive hockey. They played the first four minutes like they were losing by two goals, and then they were.

by db19 on Jan 28, 2010 8:20 AM EST reply actions

Hilarious

We’re back to selling the entire team again because of a loss.

As much as I’m rooting for the tank, I want to root for a 5 game, 25 goal outburst now to see what happens.

Relax people. This team is showing it’s colors, and just because the roster as a whole sucks doesn’t mean the players suck. If they’re under 25, they’re too young to trade yet. Add Gaborik and Lundqvist….and you have a roster worth building on.

Management house is correct.

You’ve also got people saying Hank should be traded, Staal is overrated, Anisimov and Dawes are the same player, Dubi’s a 3rd liner at best….I mean the list goes on and on when it comes to the overreaction society.

They need to purge certain contracts, pick up some draft picks, and start getting ready for next year.

But that’s been true before the 4 game losing streak. It was true about 20-25 games ago.

Not entirely

Kotalik started the season well. Higgins didn’t but 9 games was too early to give up on him. And there was no way they should trade Prospal at that time.

Those are actually the more important players to move for picks right now b/c they’re the ones that can actually fetch value. The albatross twins are their own problem.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Jan 28, 2010 9:47 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I’m loosing more and more faithe in Torts. Just don’t understand why he keeps shaking up the lines when the team is strugling. Go with a front line that worked before and stick with it. Prospal, Dubi, Gabby? Why is Christianson benched? He was working on the first line last time it worked. Put him back on the fort line with.

I didn’t understand his potgame at all. Even Avery during the 1st intermission didn’t make much sense to me. Maybe there is a shakeup? We should be so lucky.

I think what people are saying about Hank is that if he was part of cleaning house let it be. I’d hate to see him go… but, if you could package Hank up with the R&R sisters and ship them out. And Gabby With Drury and Kotalic. And get a few picks while we are at it. I’d find it a refreshing change. I know these trades aren’t happening, but examples.

Imagine 20 mil in the bank and we can buy tallent when the youth are ready to go.

Your correct though. Push Kotalic to the AHL and lose one bad contract and work from there.

i like how people are saying "wait till next year"

when in reality…it needs to be wait 2-3 years…this problem isnt as simple as dumping bad contracts…this team needs time to gel and become an actual team instead of trying to throw something together and hope it sticks…yes losing sucks now and we would like to see all of these investments pay off but in this NHL that just cant work anymore and it starts with a GM who obviously does not understand the cap system because if he did we wouldnt be stuck with these contracts

by 8kpower on Jan 28, 2010 9:34 AM EST reply actions

I agree...

No rangers team will every have a chance to gel when we “clean house” every year. I mean look how many guys got dumped over the summer. There comes a point when we just have to stick it out and be patient …

amen. well said. I hate watching them suffer like this but tomorrow is another day etc etc. They have promise. Its going to get there… eventually. But I love going to the Garden knowing that a few years from now we’ll still be able to wear our LUNDQVIST, GABORIK, STAAL, CALLAHAN, and DUBINSKY jerseys. I’m proud we have guys like that regardless of it they underperform for a week or two at a time. That’s why we love Rangers hockey. No matter how much the management screws it up…we’re not there for them, we’re there for the guys who put on the jersey. There isn’t a second I’m in the Garden that I don’t get chills just being there. It’s truly my favorite place in the world. That’s because of the team and the history. So I’ll hold on while they struggle and still be here when they’re on top.

Good for you! Well Said!

You better bring an extra sweater you might be there a while!

I only get to go to a few games a year. But can’t give them up. And has bad as they are I still watch all of the games.

MSG+ games I don’t always get because of ATT Uverse in my area. I’m almost hoping that I don’t get Saturdays game so I can have the night off.

Stick with it… even with all the talk that goes on around here, most of the guys here are going to be sticking around as well.

The thing that scares me the most is not having these players to hold on to. When Graves left and Leech… those times when you question your loyalty to the team.

Question

Do you guys think it’s Torts fault and that he needs to be fired?

Simply: No.

I have doupts about Torts. He may be a good coach for the future of this organization. In fact his style may work best with guys just comming up.

I do think we have a motivational problem and one of the coaches jobs is to motivate. It may take yelling at the guys and it may take holding thier hands, but motivating the guys is part of it.

It not an easy job, and it’s not working at the moment. You can argue that this isn’t the right group of players and that comes from Sather. But you’ve got to coach the players you have and a great coach will make the players you have seem better then they are. I don’t think we are getting that. Recently these players are looking much worse then they really are.

by CTrangerfan on Jan 28, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Being at that game was awful

Near the end, people were chanting ’Let’s Go Yankees’ & ’Let’s Go Mets’ that’s how you know the game is out of hand. My buddy texted me saying that MSG should give away beer for free when the Rangers are down 2+ goals…had that been the case, I would have been drinking all night sans about 4 minutes.

by BriGuy27 on Jan 28, 2010 10:37 AM EST reply actions

Given that the Rangers (MSG, actually) ‘own’ the concessions, you’re more likely to see sanity return to free agent signings than free beer.

not much of a surprise

this season turns out what i thougt it would turn out: a rollercoster.
with this roster, that’s “normal”.
we have got a franchise goaltender and a world class sniper, who can win games on their own (sometimes). but we don’t have a team concept.
the players we let go or traded last year play quite good with their new teams, coz the fit into their system. we don’t have a system while aquiring players (usually old and overpaid ones, who nobody else wants)
so it happens that a 19 year old rookie is our best d…(staal included.. i don’t like his style: offense- no; shut down: no: pronger and phaneuf shut oppenents down, staal stays with them)

i don’t think that our foward group is to blame, why we don’t score much goals, but our “defenders”. r and r just defend their roster spot and nothing else, no intensity and spirit, no positioning, or hitting, or passing exept to the opponent. ok, sometimes they have better games, or even good games, but what counts on d is consitency.
girardi is another d who just can’t hit anybody (know the song “hit sombody”)…

we had one good tough guy in colton orr, now we have brashear, what a joke (is sather ill or does he hate his own franchise???)

ok thats enough of complainment, but after every rangers game i think of starting a career as hockey gm…

let’s go rangers, anyway.

by marionyr on Jan 28, 2010 12:10 PM EST reply actions

I hate to say this but the best thing that could happen is the rangers DONT make the playoffs. Not making the playoffs means lost revenue and thats the only thing upper management cares about. This might force Dolan to look at the product Sather has put on the ice and actually get rid of him. I doubt it though. The garden has two teams that have players that are getting paid BIG contracts and are completley useless (dee Redden,Rossival and Brashear). The best we can hope for is Messier takes over (I know he doesnt have experience but could it be any worse) and get a team in here that at least has some heart and actually takes the body

by newyorkrob on Jan 28, 2010 12:37 PM EST reply actions

honestly i know the reason these players have no heart is because every year we ship out 15 players.

but the thing is, every year we always bring in more overpaid 33 year olds who dont care

keep: gaborik dubinsky christensen callahan anisimov lisin avery boyle staal girardi mdz gilroy lundqvist johnson
bye bye: prospal (trade for a pick) higgins kotalik drury brashear voros redden roszival

get rid of those 8 players. prospal is good but hes not going to be back next year, so get some value out of him.. by getting rid of them we have..

27.5 mil..

bring up some rookies. build up a core of young players.. make them a real team who have heart and respect for the sweater and each other.

and than, once we are a decent team with some heart, we can bring in a few star players.. not over the hill vets.. do what the isles are doing

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Jan 28, 2010 1:33 PM EST reply actions

Good point. young players who are just getting thier first chance have something to do. I think torts took the life out of some of the young guys this year by putting big preasure on them while thier over paid veteran teamates weren’t held to the same standard.

by CTrangerfan on Jan 28, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Joe Fortunato, now I can see it's not Drury's fault

Because none of the Veterans wants to listen to him either. They can’t assume Hank is going to save them night after night, because sooner than later he is going to have a bad game as well. And unfortunatly Hank had his bad game. He fought hard, but sadly it wasn’t enough.

Fire Sather, get Dolan a Brain Transplant so he can understand hockey. This team is falling apart and nothing will save them but themselves. Unfortunatly that’s not going to happen any time soon.

Remember when...

Shanahan fought (I believe Brashear) to defend Jagr?(and took his helmet off before hand)
Or when Jagr and Prucha combined to form a lethal duo on the powerplay? With Jagr’s ability to just create space and give Prucha the puck. Prucha had 30 goals that season I think and something like 20 of them were on the powerplay.
Or when the Rangers had Colton Orr? Someone who could actually dress every game and not be a liability every time he was on the ice.
Or when the Rangers had a blue line that could actually defend its net with some physicality?
None of that was really that long ago. Amazing how quickly things go to downhill

by CharleyH on Jan 29, 2010 3:51 AM EST reply actions

i agree 10000%, we had a core, 3 vets who played extremely well together and set amazing examples for younger players. Jagr, Nylander, and Straka was probably the best line in hockey for the 05-06 season aswell as the majority of the 06-07. Prucha had a mentor in Jagr. Jagr had the ability to make ANY player he played with an all star. Just some food for thought here…. imagine if Bure was healthy in the 03-04 season when Jagr got here. Lindros centering Jagr on the right and Bure on the left.

by Dougee on Jan 29, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

we had the D and the system to support it though

by Dougee on Jan 29, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

and how many first round exists?

It was the same group of us complaining then as now. The “good ’ol days” weren’t that good. Jagr was great in his prime, or when he gave a damn to play, which was rarely. Personally, I was glad to be rid of that overpaid albatross.

by bleed'n blue on Jan 30, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Bure

is the one Ranger that I really look back on and think “oh what could have been.” All the other “stars” that Sather has brought in you can look at and figure out quickly that it just wasn’t going to work. Even when Jagr was brought in, it wasn’t a great idea. It took time for things to click. But looking at Bure, he was forced to retire so young. Everyone always talked about how Jagr needed a playmaking center. Jagr didn’t need another playmaker on the team(bit of a hyperbole), he was the playmaker. He needed a goal scorer. As much as everyone seems to hate Drury, imagine Drury, Bure, Jagr. Great defensive center, ridiculously fast LW, one of the best RWs to ever play. While the 3 were never on the team at the same time, they very easily could have been. But enough daydreaming, wheres tomorrow’s hope?
