Rangers News: Ranger prospects continue to dominate WJC
Time to brighten your Sunday (I'm talking to you Giants fans) with some good news on the Rangers front, once again coming from the farm.
The United States U-20 team played Finland yesterday, with the winner getting the rights to move on to the semi-finals. The United States won 6-2 thanks to another Chris Kreider goal and two Derek Stepan helpers.
Chris Kreider continues to silence the doubters scoring yet another goal and finding the score sheet. Jess from the prospect park has some analysis of this game and says that he played very well despite a shakey first period.
And you can't forget Stepan who has registered 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points, making him the highest scoring player in the tournament so far. Those 11 points, by the way, lead Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson (picked 10th overall in the 2009 entry draft by the Edmonton Oilers) by a point and Taylor Hall (projected to be the first overall pick in this year's draft) by 4 points. You can read the scoring leaders here.
Not bad eh? Stepan is slowly becoming the Rangers top prospect and Kreider is really making strides to getting there too. What do you all think?

I am definitely excited about Stepan. He could potentially develop into a solid # 1 center in the NHL. I wish he could make the jump after this season, but everyone is saying he is 2 or 3 years away. That’s a long time….
Kreider is a nice surpise, too, but I am sure he is at least 2-3 years away as well.
theyll be traded for some crap so we can get the 8th seed again and lose in the first round.. so whats the difference.
as you can tell, not the best mood today lmao
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

As most on here know I have been singing Stepan’s praises since the offseason and think very highly of him so I am not surprised with his play in the tourney, but very pleased to see the way he was dominating at Wisconsin right before the tournament carry over. I think Stepan if he leaves Wisconsin after this year has a shot to make the Rangers in the fall, if not it would probably only be 1 year in Hartford for him, but have to remember he is still only 19 1/2 and wont turn 20 until June. He could also stay at Wisconsin for his Junior year and maybe come straight to the Rangers for the 11-12 year.
Player who has most improved their draft status for the upcoming draft is probably Nino Niederreiter from the Swiss. I was hoping a month ago that if the Rangers ended up with a high pick he might sneak into the early 2nd, but with his play in this tournament 5GP 5G 3A for an undermanned squad should lock him into a top 15 pick.
Kreider should stay in College until he is a Junior, play 1 year with Hartford and then he would be ready at 22.
As for the stats, it sounds good to say he is leading the tourney in scoring, but he has played 1 more game than Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, so I wouldnt say he is really the leader. We shall see tonight when they play each other at 9.
It can't just be luck, can it?
It seems to me that since the lockout, the Rangers have slowly become much better evaluators of young talent. Not great, but SO much better than they were.
I left wondering though, who really deserves the credit for this? It can’t be Sather.

gordie clark
is the man who deserves all the credit for the excellent drafting…i give sather none

The Rangers have consistently been good drafters… Cherepanov had the potential to be a 30-40 goals a year player, but alas, RIP.
Please refer to other threads
trashing Sather for drafting Huge Specimen……ooops….I mean Hugh Jessiman.
They have not been consistently good drafters during Sather’s tenure – or even before that.
The scouting efforts, and thus the draft, improved significantly under – believe it or not – Tom Renney (prior to his being named Head Coach) and Gord Clark.
Sather deserves a lot of the credit too
me and Jess Rubenstein were talking about this on the radio last week. But Sather has put together a good crew (Gordie Clark deservs tons of credit as well) but don’t take anything away from Sather. He excells during the draft especially in the later rounds.
Yeah the Hugh Jessiman incident lingers, but it really is not that big of a deal. He has filled these pipelines with gold.

i agree the pipeline is in good shape now, but that doesnt mean we should forget there were a number of misses in the system over the years
07: Lafleur was a bust goalie as a 2nd rounder
06: We got artie and sangs but little else even in the minors
05: Staal was a gem, Sauer has potential but Cliche bust 2nd, Flatt bust 3rd
04: Got Dubi, Cally so it seems decent and maybe Byers, but even with that for all the shots we had early (8 picks in top 80) plenty of missed chances after the sell-off in 03. Montoya didnt pan out even to get legit trade value, Korp netted us Lisin, Olver and Graham were bust 2nd’s as were Ryan and Bahensky in the 3rd.
03: Dawes and Potter were the only viable players
02: Only Prucha in the 8th

From what I remember lefleur was highly spoken about in that draft and played well but didn’t he retire from hockey because he got tired of it? I remeber reading an article on him about how he’s back to running his fathers bussiness or whatever it may be.. But I can be wrong, it happens. But jessimen was talked about highly too, that whole first round was. I don’t remeber if we had our eye on him before the draft but it’s not like sather was gonna be the only gm taking him. Busts happen to every teams even great drafters like the wings. It happens I’m sick of the jessimen talk I’m sorry.

Lafleur was drafted only because
Benio Allaire (too lazy to look up the spelling) demanded that he get picked. And he was highly touted, and lots of people wanted a piece of him.
I think that as time as gone on Sather has done better. I mean last year (Kreider, Werek, Bourque, and Horak) are all doing brilliantly

What does it matter if they were highly touted or not if they end up a bust? Does Jessiman only count as a bust because some viewed him as an overdraft? To me if you end up w a wasted pick you end up w a wasted pick
As for Sather getting better that is where we disagree. What you see in the last two drafts since Gordie Clark was given the promotion and the keys to run the draft. In these 2 drafts we have MDZ, Stepan, Grachev, Kreider, Werek, Bourque, Horak, Stajcer. So my point was in listing all the busts was that once Clark was given the keys the results have been improved so it is not to Sather’s credit it is to Clark.

what i would give sather all the credit in the world for and have previously on these boards is the accumulation of talent outside the draft process. We have players like Girardi (undrafted) already here, but Klassen (undrafted), Nigel Williams (filler but good move), getting McDonagh, Gilroy, Heikkinen, trying out Luke Pither and Luke Walker who have both had big years but we couldnt sign because we were up against the 50 contract limit. Also getting Chad Johnson for a 5th rounder this year was a very good move. so the moves are getting better outside of the pure free agent moves, especially for the prospect side.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 3, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions
The reason why I say he was highly talked about was too show that sather was not the only gm or person thinking he had skills and potentiel. So it wasn’t like he was looked at as a 5 th round pick that went in the 1st or 2nd. I agree it doesn’t matter now but that’s the way it is

gordie clark...
is the single most important individual the rangers have working for them off the ice…not saying much, but absolutely true.

I’m familiar with their draft history. Still, in recent history we have done very well in the draft. We’re not Detroit, but I still think our drafting ability is the least of our problems.
Notables:
2008: MDZ, Stepan, Grachev
2007: Cherepanov, Campbell
2006: Sangs, Anisimov
2005: Staal, Sauer, Dupont
2004: Korpikoski, Dubinsky, Callahan, Byers
boy oh boy...
i can’t wait for the 2012/2013season…goodbye dru, brash, kotalik, rozi, voros, redden, higgy. say hello to stepan, kreider, werek, mcdonagh, sangs, grachev, sauer (maybe), bourque (maybe) and add them to staal, gabby, MDZ, gilroy, arty, dubi, cally and hank. mix those blueshirts with some smart veteran FA signings and maybe another big splash on a star scorer and d-man with the cap room, and we got some bright times ahead. also, a few years down the road and i think uncle glennie is no longer calling the shots (it doesn’t take someones like mess 3+years to “learn” how to be a GM).
p.s. i can’t help but be this optimistic, only way to get through seasons like these

You do realize that Redden’s contract isn’t done until 2 years later – after the 13/14 season, right ?
Not looking to pour water on your fire (or gasoline, either….) – but that’s the reality – unless somebody wakes up and does something outrageous with him sooner…..
yea i know that...
but im pretty sure he won’t be here for that long. maybe for the next two years, but i do not see him finishing out his current contract as a ranger…maybe as a wolfpack, but not as a ranger…

no lie
The Ducks OFFERED ME Niedermier for Redden straight up. Needless to say I took the deal in a heartbeat

Please
Drury/Rozsival for Nash Tyutin and a pick
Kotalik and Byers for Marc Savard
Boyle/Avery/Higgins for Getzlaf
Redden and a draft pick for Tanguay and a prospect
I have Regher Turris and Bertuzzi too…don’t remember what I sent though.
Lines are:
Nash-Savard-Gaborik
Tanguay-Getzlaf-Lisin
Dubinsky-Turris-Callahan
Prospal-Anisimov-Bertuzzi
Staal-Gilroy
Tyutin-MDZ
Girardi-Regher
It’s a lot more fun watching those Rangers. And yet, no matter how hard I try, I can’t trade Brashear. Lone blemish on the rosters, at least he’s an AHL scratch though.

Kreider
Can’t wait to see his speed. Somebody said he’s already faster then most NHLers when they drafted him.
Gordie is the key here imo
I believe this guy knows what to look for. Any ideas with the current pace we are on where we might land in the next draft?
at the current pace...
probably in the top 10-15…but theres no put at even speculating our draft position yet. only halfway through the season and there are about 10 or so teams within 5 points of one another so by the olympics and then trade deadlinewe’ll have a better idea…
not to the pessismist but the schedule from now until the olympics is grueling, if not brutal. i’d honestly be surprised if we won more than 7-8 games. at that rate we’d have a top ten pick for sure lol

Im not too familiar with our front office, so this may come out as a stupid question but...
If Sather is somehow fired is Gordie Clark going to be considered as a next GM??
Crazy
no, next in line is assistant GM Jim Schoenfield, then Messier then MAYBE Clark if for nothing else his brilliance in drafting
