NHL News: Dion Phaneuf traded to Toronto Maple Leafs
Well Ranger fans, looks like we can snuff out this pipe dream:
From TSN: (click link for full story)
Two teams in dire need of a shakeup have done just that, as the Calgary Flames have shipped defenceman Dion Phaneuf to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Details of who the Flames get in return is still unknown, but when asked if forwards Matt Stajan and Niklas Hagman were main components in the deal, a source told TSN, "it's bigger than that."
Drafted by the Flames in the 1st round (9th overall) in 2003, Phaneuf has 10 goals and 12 assists with a plus- 3 rating in 55 games this season.

But Gig’s got a NTC, and I’m not sure if he’ll want to go anywhere – his son’s got a rare condition and the best treatment facility in the world is in LA.

i think maybe that it was burke dealing for him, that hiler just got an extension yesterday that might have made him waive the clause.

I feel bad for Dubinsky, in basically any trade rumor that surrounds this team Dubinsky is always in the middle of it. Kind of sucks always being in the middle of trade talks.
by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 31, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe that is because he is
a young player with worlds of “potential” that has just held out after 2 years of steady regression. Duby hasn’t done dick since Jagr left. I am getting sick of Duby. I know criticizing him here is like blasphemy, but he sucks. He hasn’t gotten any better since Jagr has been gone. He skates with the puck into the corner/behind the net, never really does anything, never shoots the puck. It is frustrating because you see flashed of what he can be for a week, then he goes 24 games with 6 points. I’m tired of his ass. We have a newer, younger Duby. His name is Anisimov. I liked Duby since he came up with us, but after 2 years of nothing, then after his holdout nonsense this offseason, I say trade his ass, and don’t look back.

He’s on pace for career highs in G, A and PTS despite missing 13 games.
How exactly is that regression?

Whoa whoa whoa…That’s not hard to top. the kids career High in goals is like 13 and points is like 42 if givin enuff ice tine Blair betts couldve done that…I’m not a dubi hater but he has to find a way to put up points
by klh2009 on Jan 31, 2010 5:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
hank is definitely regressing in shutouts. i say trade.
by #17ToTheRafters on Jan 31, 2010 5:29 PM EST up reply actions
Just stop
Unless by enough ice time you mean “no line changes mode on NHL 2010”
Blair Betts averaged 0.72 pts per 60 last year. Dubi averaged 1.65.
In 07-08 Betts averaged 0.55. Dubi averaged 1.97
This year Betts is having a good season at 1.31. Dubi is at 2.15.
Is 41 pts a monster total? No. Is it a good total for a 21 and 22 year old center? Um yeah. Dubinsky is putting up points. No he’s not a 90 point center yet, but he’s 23 for crying out loud.
Plus the point of the retort is that his totals are not “regressing.” He’s getting better, just not at the time warp speed New Yorkers expect.

and last I checked his numbers are better than Callahan’s so why aren’t we hopping on his shit?

And also
I like Anisimov as much as the next guy….but Dubinsky at 21 years old > Anisimov @ 21.
At least thus far. Maybe AA has a higher ceiling, who knows. But to clamor for a trade of Dubi to make room for a guy who hasn’t been as good yet is kinda funny.

my thinking is alike .
every ranger fan is making him to be the second coming of graves this kid is only good to be a third line center at best he is not a playmaker he takes stupid penalty,s and will never be a 40 goal scorer if they do trade him i would rather him be in the package then cally ..
Since you mention it
For one, that’s not even the correct comparison. Compare Cally to Graves, they’re a much better comparison, given they were both wingers who are primarily goal scorers. But for the sake of the exercise:
Graves @ age 23: 26-33-59, 139 PIMs in 80 games
Dubinsky’s season, prorated for 80 games: 20-33-53, 57 PIM.
I mean, I love every minute that Graves played for this team, he had the heart of a lion. But look at Adam’s career numbers, save for one or two seasons he was a 50-60 point player who was lethal on the PP.
He was absolutely, no doubt, 100% a more talented goal scorer than Dubinsky, but at minimum Dubinsky should be a 50-60 point player in this league, which makes him at minimum a 2nd line center.
No, he’s not going to score 40 goals, he doesn’t have the finish to be that. Then again, how many 40 goal scorers are even in the league anymore? (only 8 last year, only 10 the year before, and 10 the year before that) This isn’t the 1980’s where teams have 2 and 3 guys who can score 40.
A 25-50-75 season is certainly attainable for this kid. Again, the kid is friggin 23.
You guys crack me up.

This is great news for us. if giguere plays the way he is capable and same with phaneuf maybe toronto can make a run and pass us in the standings.
other news out there is that Sather is going to step down after the year and Mess is taking over. not real happy if mess is taking over but maybe they will allow him to dump sather’s mistakes and start “fresh”

this is why this team needs a brian burke. these are two great trades.
For the PHANEUF trade, Darren Dreger is reporting that Toronto will send Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers and Ian White for Phaneuf, Sjostrom and Keith Aulie
That is basically phaneuf for FA’s and, filler and shedding Hagman’s 3 mil next year while also getting Aulie who is another huge 6’ 5" d-man. He got the best player in the deal.
I have heard Giguere and a 1 for Toskala or Giguere for Toskala and Blake. It might be even better with Blake than the pick because now he got someone to eat 2 years of blake and got himself a number 1 goalie.
Add these together and he still has like 13 mil in cap space this summer.
oh and he didnt give up 1 pick or prospect to do it.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions
probably not, but point is didnt take any, unlike us who gave up a 3rd rounder for brian boyle.

this is a spectacular trade for the leafs! i cannot believe they pulled the kessel deal and this in the same year. they might actually be able to make the playoff during the next year or two.

nah
Phaneuf isn’t playing up to his contract and he is a bombshell waiting to happen in TOR. Also Calgary got younger and mademore room.

Problem with a Brian Burke...
is he’s probably too headstrong for Dolan’s liking.
The only reason he got rid of IT with the Knicks was because he embarassed the organization…with his scandal thing (not the Knicks…at least in Dolan’s mind)
As long as Sather’s ‘squeaky clean’ the only way they get rid of him is if he steps down…like I’m hoping your right on….

these moves while great are also a definite response to the embarassment of watching a 3-0 lead turn into a 5-3 loss last night to Vancouver on hockey day in canada.
Burke was questioned on this during the press conference… he said no, obviously, but it was really a no-yes.
of course he is going to say no. and if i was him i do these deals regardless of yesterday, but there is a reason he did them this morning.

J.S Giguere....
is old and his best days are behind him….. 33 yrs old. He has maybe 3 yrs left if hes lucky!!
he is there new number 1 for next year, while either gustavson gets ready or they have 6 mil in a year to get a real number 1.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:05 PM EST up reply actions
who cares they gave up toskala who sucks now, and blake who has 2 years at 4 mil each and only have to pay JS for 1.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions
Maybe not to the trading deadline but I could see Komi going, not necessarily Kabe.
Burke said he’s going to be giving a lot of the AHL kids shots, so if they’re going to have ANY hope of winning any games, they’re going to need an experienced blueline,
well i didnt mean today, but b/w now and free agency (draft or deadline)
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
The real question is: how will this effect my fantasy team? I have Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, and Iginla. I also had Toskala, but I dropped him awhile ago.
it really should impact it much at all. u could pick up giguere if u think he will play well as the number 1 for the rest of the year. might help phaneuf if he plays with kaberle, especially on the pp.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
staying on that topic, do you assume this increases or decreases matt stajan’s value? i mean, is he a real 2nd liner outside of TO? i also have bouwmee, terrible year – fantasy wise.
by #17ToTheRafters on Jan 31, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions
anyone think with all this extra cap space for the summer the leafs make a run at kovalchuk? With kovalchuk that is maybe a top 6 team in the east with phaneuf and kessel
overall they didnt really add cap space but convert free agents into salaried players in the phaneuf deal. i dont think they have enough space to sign kovy unless komi or kaberle goes. i think they have approx 13.5 mil after today’s moves for next year if the cap stays, but they only have 6 forwards signed for next year. kadri should be up no question, but not enough room to sign kovy and 4 other forwards for 12.5 mil
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions
the roster freeze is feb 12-28. why it is the 12th when they play until 14th not sure.
the trade deadline is 3 days after they come back March 3.
I dont know if this means deals cant be discussed during the roster freeze because it is hard to believe that teams will look much different March 2nd than they do feb 11th.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions
there’s no way the Leafs improve after this… they have ZERO scoring, as they just gave up their two top scorers for Phaneuf, and they were already struggling to score goals.
In reality, the ONLY thing they have going for them is size and strength… nothing else.
i certainly doubt that burke is done. he has more pieces he can trade and now he has cap space to take on bad salaries from other teams if it will net him picks/prospects. also unlike dolan toronto will dump crap players in the minors so their salaries wont matter in terms of the cap next year.
by Michael Gleich on Jan 31, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions
true
i figure Burke HAS to trade some D now, to get some scoring – whether that be picks/prospects for future scoring, or young NHL talent.
But still, they seem like a mess right now… i can’t imagine them turning this season around – looks like full on re-build, but without the 1st round picks!
i’m just hoping he’ll take one of RnR sisters, off our hands – but of course with picks/prospects thrown in.
maybe they wont turn it around this year, but with burke’s track record i will give him the benefit of the doubt until he is proven wrong.
he would have been better having the picks, getting hall or seguin, whoever in the 2nd and next years 1 than kessel imo but he probably didnt figure his goaltending would be this bad this year.

I’ll apologize in advance: “I’m Sorry”
With that out of the way – how the hell do you know what Sather is doing? He could be sitting on the can smoking (and it wouldn’t be a pipe, it would be a Cuban cigar) – or he could be working out a deal with the Oilers for Souray. Or, more likely, something that is so off the radar as to be completely unexpected (remember Gomez? There was nary a hint of that before it was announced).
The fact that nothing’s actually happened doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. And when something does happen, we’ll probably all be pissed off at how stupid it is.
The BEST thing Sather could do is what you’re complaining about: NOTHING.
BlueshirtBanter - beating up reporters at bus stops since 1994
well the best thing he could do is trade higgins, prospal, giradi and kots, but yes the least damage thing is doing nothing.
and yes i intentionally left out redden and rozi cause he would probably either trade for an awful contract or have to give up picks/prospects to get someone to take them. well at least w rozi.

agreed.
I hope Sather is doing nothing. That Souray rumor just won’t die either. Sheldon Souray has 13 points in 37 games and is a -19. We have enough underachievers on the blueline…
