(UPDATED) Rangers News: TSN reporting Flames, Rangers to announce Jokinen-Kotalik deal

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 02/01/10 12:10 AM EST the latest update is that the deal isn't official yet, may not go through until morning, we will keep you posted]

From TSN: (click link for full story)

Sources tell TSN the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames are expected to announce a trade tonight that will send Calgary centre Olli Jokinen and forward Brandon Prust to the Rangers in exchange for forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins.

Jokinen was originally acquired by Calgary from the Phoenix Coyotes at last year's trade deadline. The 31-year old veteran has 11 goals and 24 assists in 55 games with the Flames this season.

Brandon Prust

Looks like Higgins "21" jersey won't go unused for long.

From "RangerSmurf": Now if they would just free up the "33" for Prust

This trade is just flat out awesome. Jokinen is a UFA at the end of the year, so the Rangers dumped Kotalik and the $3 million contract for the next two years. Sather did a salary dump for the future and a team upgrade for this season in the same move.

I believe there is a warrant out for Glen Sather’s arrest, rape is illegal in Canada.

by Dave Shapiro on Jan 31, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

You're correct that it's awesome... until...

Sather re-ups Jokinen for $6.5 mil per for the next 8 years or something dumb like that. I’d like to think that’s not going to happen… but this IS Glen Sather we’re talking about here.

Latest updates say it’s Kotalik/Higgins for Jokinen/Prust.

Rangers taken on an extra 500k in cap. Small price to pay to get rid of 2 years of Kotalik’s contract.

Hardly a brilliant trade – more like finding a compatible dance partner. Supposedly Sutter wanted Jokinen out. We need a center. They’re probably happy getting Higgins – who’ll fit that system better and may find his game again.

The best part is that Jokinen is a UFA after this season, Prust is an RFA.

And we get someone who’s willing – and capable – of dropping gloves with morons like Carcillo.

yet another example of Sather having to make a tremendous trade to make up for an awful contract he gave a FA.

he only needs to do it a few more times to be closer to square (Rozi, Brashear)

I like this move if its true…..Olie may be the center we are looking for. At least on the PP with Gabby he should fit in nicely and he’s 31 which if he plays well, perhaps he is re signed on the cheap. crosses fingers

Thing about Prust...

…those guys out West get nasty with those rivalries. Prust’s the kind of guy that thrives on that sort of thing.

Even when he gets his head HANDED to him by Rick Rypien, he comes back brass balls style and drops ’em
again. And again. And finally… wins.

That kinda thing is what this team
needs. He reminds me of a (slightly bigger) George McPhee type – who’d drop his gloves with Dave Brown, broken wrist and all.

I’m telling you… he is going to be a fan favorite. Once he drops Carcillo and/or Hartnett? They’ll give him the key to the city.

Report: Rangers acquire Jokinen from Flames
Sunday, 01.31.2010 / 10:52 PM / News

TSN is reporting the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames are expected to soon announce a trade that will send Calgary center Olli Jokinen and forward Brandon Prust to the Rangers in exchange for forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins.

Jokinen, 31, has 11 goals and 24 assists in 55 games with the Flames this season.

Jokinen

Can’t wait till the first time Torts flips out on Jokinen for not getting back on the forecheck. I see this how everyone else does mostly. Decent trade to bail Sather out of a really bad contract that he handed out. Jokinen will have a chance to improve our second line play. Like what I’ve heard about Prust. Liked Higgins but you can only keep going with a guy for so long with little to no results when you are supposed to be a scorer. I never questioned his effort though. Good riddance to Alice Kotalik. I hated when you were signed and I’m ecstatic that you are gone without killing the cap the next two years. You play with no heart and couldn’t take responsibility for your own bad play. I know this is beating the same drum as always but I hope this is the first of at least a few consecutive good moves by Sather. I know, but I’m crossing my fingers. Now to find somebody with a bad enough concussion to take Wade Redden. On a side note, good luck to Freddy “Shoes” in Toronto. He was very under-appreciated in his short time in NY.

But maybe that's the hiccup.

Rangers wanted to send D (Gilroy?), and Flames wanted Higgins instead. Flames’ version of the story broke while it was being sorted out.

then why would the flames be the ones holding up the report of them getting what they wanted?

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

Because the deal wasn’t officially done before the story broke. It couldn’t be done because Higgins was playing, leaving Sather some time to haggle.

they are holding it up after the game.

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

By definition, yes. You are correct.

It is after the game, and the Flames are holding it up.

The issue is: We don’t know for how long that the Flames are holding it up. Was it at the last minute? Did it change after the Phaneuf trade? Remember, if the trade was done, they would’ve pulled Higgins out. As long as he was playing, it wasn’t done.

And the thing that gets me: If Brooks & Zipay are right, then the Rangers were OK dealing Gilroy but not so OK when the Flames asked for Higgins. That part boggles my mind.

and if the flame hearsay is right they are asking for more forwards cause they are apparently attempting to flip kotalik, some of their forwards to atl in a kovy deal, but arent making the ranger deal to get kots until they are sure they can flip him, which to me is BS.

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

This is weirder than a Higgins-or-Gilroy debate. If the Flames are pulling a stunt like that, it reeks of desperation on Calgary’s part. Milbury wouldn’t have tried that when he was running the Isles, for crying out loud.

Then again, perhaps TSN’s Dreger mistook a rumor with legs for a done deal. That would explain it, too.

by MatthewA on Feb 1, 2010 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

i would agree w that if everyone else wasnt reporting the same thing.

Everyone is reporting Dreger's tweets.

Brooks and Zipay were filling in blanks, but they’re not declaring this deal done yet. I’m not disputing the sentiment that a trade is close (so close that Dreger ran with it), but it’s just a hot rumor until Olli’s wearing a Blueshirt.

No chance on Edmonton, they’re trying to dump what they have. Rozsival’s best destination would be a fringe playoff team looking for defensive help. The nice part about Rozsival’s contract (if there is one) is that he only makes $7m the next two years despite his $5m per cap hit.

Dallas would be an example of a good destination. There were Souray to Dallas rumblings early in Jan…Rozsival could fit a similar role and is actually a slightly cheaper option.

Stealing the trade idea from The Copper & Blue – Niskanen and Wandell would be a nice take for Rozsival.

While I like this deal, if it happens, and would have gladly taken a Zamboni driver for these two, let’s not forget about Sathers track record. For every good move he makes he screws up 5 !!!!!!!!! This one good move comes as the direct result of 2 bad moves! We are still stuck with Redden, Roszival, and Brashear!! Until they are gone, Sathers ledger sheet is still in the negative!!

where they really going to do what espn was reporting.

_"Ales Kotalik and Ryan Callahan will likely be traded to the Calgary Flames Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust, TSN reports. The trade would’ve been complete sooner, but it appears it stalled when the Flames made their Dion Phaneuf deal yesterday.

Previously, the Flames-Rangers deal involved Matt Gilroy, too, the New York Post reports."_

dont like it so much with callahan involved or gilroy for that matter. i am looking forward to watching both of them play for a long while.

by mfk on Feb 1, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

espn rumors

that is what they said. and also the following

“The New York Rangers might be open to trading Matt Gilroy, especially after the drama yesterday when he was almost sent to Calgary as part of the imminent Olli Jokinen deal.

He was replaced by Ryan Callahan in that deal, but the Rangers will gain a lot of cap room for next season in the deal that will happen today. That might mean they are eying another trade, possibly for a scorer. Gilroy, 24, has played well in his rookie year but Rangers GM Glen Sather might be desperate to shake up this disappointing team."

If Callahan Goes- So Do I

I’m cautiously optimistic that ESPN was just spitballing here. However, if Callahan gets traded for anything less than a true captain for this team, I’m moving to Calgary to grow hockey pucks…

It would mark up there with trading Leetch, Graves, or Gartner…I know its business but you don’t trade the heart and soul of a team just to make a short-term run.

Although it wouldn’t surprise me to see Sather’s pride hurt if the Flames tried to walk away, and now he’s just offering anything he can to close the deal.

I hope they figure this out

Jokinen is overpaid and underachieving, but is a clear upgrade over Higgins and Kotalik. Prust is a tough guy and would allow us to continue scratching Brashear and Voros every night.

I’m guessing Torts would move Prospal back to the wing to play with Gaborik and Jokinen, then stick Christensen somewhere in the middle six, maybe with Anisimov and Lisin.

One man’s garbage is another man’s gold.

All these guys could succeed in their new homes. I can’t really say for certain on Jokinen…cuz if you can’t score somewhere else…its gonna be real tough to change that with the Rangers.

Higgins was good before he came to NY. Kotalik was what he was…he’ll probably succeed there too.

The best think about Olli, like you say, is regardless of what he’s done this year, he’s still arguably the best center on the Rangers if this deal does fall.

At the very least, the Rangers acquired a contract that goes away next year or one that they can parlay into something (hopefully prospects…given Sather’s bad after good trades…something horrific)

You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there

by FreeBradshaw on Feb 1, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

This smells like....

Someone is clearing cap space so he can send Dubinsky Rozsival and a few 1st rounders for Kovy!! The fact that Sather was so willing to trade Callahan or Gilroy with Kotalik looks like he wants to clean up his mess and have two legit scorers in Gaborik and Kovy for Messier to start fresh next year.

by RangerFan5 on Feb 1, 2010 12:53 PM EST reply actions

Please see the link provided by KingHenrik above.

Carpiniello (who I trust more than any of the other beat writers) stood by his story from last night saying it was Kotalik holding things up. Brooksie is now on that bandwagon. And it makes sense.

Callahan was never involved – and maybe Calgary initially wanted Gilroy but changed their mind when Sather laughed at them.

Now – I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Slats go after Kovy in the off-season – but right now it’s positioning (cap space clearing) and not much else….

BlueshirtBanter - beating up reporters at bus stops since 1994

by dbmaven on Feb 1, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Er...

If the trade goes through…they’re shipping off 5.25m and getting back 5.75m. They’ll have less cap room this year.

Now, Jokinen’s deal expires so they’ll have more cap room in the offseason, but not enough to sign Kovalchuk and Staal.

I maintain there’s about a 2% chance Kovalchuk is a Ranger at any point in the near future.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Feb 1, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

yes that 3 mil just makes it possible for him to re-sign Staal without dumping Rozi or Redden in hartford for all of you who just think that Sather is going to wake up the 1st day after the year and decide he was wrong and they need to go.

so lets stop holding out the candle that he will dump both and then put us back in cap hell by giving kovy 10 mil a year

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

My ‘cap space clearing’ statement was in the form of Jokinen’s expiring contract, as opposed to 2 more years @ 3mm per for Kotalik.

My response wasn’t to you. It’s definitely a cap clearing move, but not for a Kovalchuk trade this year.

eh i dont really consider the calgary deal “buying”. it is a move to attempt to make the playoffs and should make them better than they were and probably cost a top 5 pick, but if that is it in terms of adds im fine w it cause as currently rumored kots and higgins it is actually a bonus long term cap wise without picks prospects. if the deal changes my opinion of it will almost certainly as well. it also signals a probable missed opportunity to sell high on prospal which hurts long term because of lost potential picks but souray getting hurt makes me feel a lot better since he wont be a mistake coming here.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Feb 1, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

i saw the liles rumor which is even worse than rozi deal cause it has an extra year. i saw spec on philly, was, nj but none of them have cap space and sather probably wouldnt trade w them anyway.

la has to be focused on kovy first is my guess, though they would have the cap space to take on rozi, and would need a d-man if jack johnson was included in a kovy deal.

i would take o’donnell or randy jones expirings in a heartbeat. even better we are in la tomorrow so we can just drop him off.

i didnt see the dallas rumor as to what edm would get. i said in preseason that was a place for rozi to go cause of needing to replace zubov. im sure dallas is sad that toronto traded for js yesterday, sure they would have love to dump turco there.

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Dallas was the only one confirmed to have interest that I saw. Speculation was that Niskanen was being shopped, and that the addition of Souray could be a reason to shop him.

Yeah, I’m grasping at straws a little bit, but to me, they represent similar commodities, veteran defenseman, big shot (Souray’s obv bigger), with obscene contracts.

If one could drum up interest, logic dictates the other could.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Feb 1, 2010 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

i would love to get niskanen for him as he would be a cheaper alternative to bringing back girardi, has plenty of nhl experience and good offensive potential.

as far as souray/rozi, i might be in the minority but i think rozi is a better overall player than souray with cheaper salaries (4,3) than souray. as strange as it may sound to those of us who have to watch rozi so much he is better defensively than souray, more durable. all souray has is the big shot.

by mleetch352 on Feb 1, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

An ‘internet source’ (not Mr E5, or ‘Malkin to the Kings’) suggests the following:

The Rangers were very close to acquiring Sheldon Souray from Edmonton for Ales Kotalik, Chris Higgins, and a member of the Woflpack (believed to be Corey Potter). However, after Souray broke his hand the other night the Rangers told the Oilers the deal is done.

Presuming that the Jokinen deal goes through, that’s MUCH better than this Sourary deal…..

for those of us who want this team to “fall” this season this should make you feel better. according to dirk hoag’s (nashville’s blog) the rangers have the 10th toughest schedule left this year and the toughest of anyone in the East.

woops, missed carolina, so 2nd toughest in the east

If this happens ...

I would turn around and deal Olli, Avery and Rozi for Kovalchuk.

too bad ur not running the thrashers then. lol. they would be 100 million times (1 for each dollar kovy wants in his deal) letting him walk for nothing than taking that kind of deal.

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

"Haven’t heard back from Ales Kotalik’s agent, Larry Kelly, but it’s becoming clear that one of the hold-ups to this deal, if not the main one, is Kotalik taking his time weighing his options as he has a limited no-trade clause in his three-year, $9 million deal.

Frankly, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. If the Flames, who have been scouting the Rangers for a couple of weeks, wanted Kotalik despite his lengthy stint as a Rangers’ healthy scratch (eight out of nine after last night), why he wouldn’t want to go to a team where he’d see more playing time is a bit strange. Devil’s advocate, though, Kotalik is well within his right to exercise his contract terms, just as Dany Heatley was when he decided he didn’t want to play for the Oilers. It worked out for Heatley. Maybe Kotalik has a preferred destination but, obviously, any comparisons between Heatley and Kotalik are silly, especially considering how far Kotalik has fallen out of favor with coach John Tortorella. Kotalik’s confidence, by his own admission, is shot. From my perspective, this is not a situation that will ever resolve itself for Kotalik in New York, at least not as long as Tortorella is coaching."

just like it is within the rangers rights to leave his ass on the bench the rest of the year and leave him in hartford for 2 years and basically ending his nhl career.

Makes you wonder at what’s the use of a NTC anyway.
