Rangers Recap: Higgins late goal holds off Bruins comeback, Rangers win 3-2
After seeing a two goal lead evaporate in the waning moments of the game, the Rangers and the home crowd needed a lift, and Christopher Higgins was there to provide it, scoring the game winner and giving the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden.
The way this season has gone it seems fitting that getting a power play already ahead 2-0 with six minutes left in the game would somehow work against the Rangers. The Bruins scored a shorthanded goal with 5:30 remaining, then tied the game ninety seconds later to stun the Rangers and the crowd. Marc Staal was caught out of position, and Sean Avery was without a stick, the Bruins were able to cycle in the offensive zone and get the equalizer.
Then with a minute and a half remaining, Higgins banged home his first goal of the season at MSG to give the Rangers a much needed win on home ice, where the Rangers had lost three in a row.
The Blueshirts had numerous chances on the power play in the first period, but only converted once, on a goal by Ales Kotalik, who scored for the first time since November 5th. Rangers were outshot 12-9 in the first period.
Erik Christensen notched his second goal of the season on a fantastic outlet pass from Michael Del Zotto to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the second period. Christensen was being checked on the play, and actually scored the goal with one hand on the stick. Christensen has been playing better since being reinserted into the lineup, and it couldn't come soon enough for the offensively challenged Rangers.
Brandon Dubinsky has been very quietly picking up his game. He assisted on the first two goals, giving him four goals and five assists in the last seven games. He is also showing great moves going to the net, hopefully these are signs that Dubi's starting to get in a groove.
Rangers outshot the Bruins 35-28, Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves.

Final Thoughts:
- I still can't figure out why Artem Anisimov isn't getting more ice time. Only 10 minutes in this game. I don't get it.
- Only three penalties for the Rangers tonight.
- Chris Drury picked up an assist as he continues his historic march to a 25 point season.
- My internet is up and running, back in the swing, it was good to be in the open thread with you guys during the game.
- Don't forget Tuesday night on Blueshirt Banter Radio, we are interviewing former New York Ranger John Ogrodnick. John spent 5 seasons on Broadway, and was a 40 goal scorer for the Rangers.
- This has nothing to do with hockey, but I am watching the Fiesta Bowl halftime show while I type this, and sorry Boise St. but the girls from TCU are much hotter.

POST-GAME QUOTES
John Tortorella on tonight's game...
"We come back and get a point after being down in the third period the other night. I think we did it against the Islanders, we came back. I thought we played really well in all facets of the game."
Henrik Lundqvist on other guys scoring tonight...
"Other guys stepping up now is huge for us. It is a big month. We need a lot of guys to step up and score for us."
Brandon Dubinsky on tonight's game...
"The bottom line is we found a way to get two points here tonight. I thought we played a solid game. They're a good team too, they pressured us and they had two opportunities and they found a way to score in the third. But there was a great play by Higgy (Christopher Higgins) to put the puck in the net and two points is two points, especially here at home where we have been struggling."

Maybe Torts is anti Russian hockey players? lol

hey, I married a farm girl, they are cute too, but just based on what I have seen, the TCU girls win. Also, these have to be the ugliest uniforms I’ve ever seen by two teams.

It's a new season!
The 2nd half begins.
Higgins will score 15 this half!
Dubinsky will outscore Gaborik!
Christensen will outscore Dubinsky!
Drury will do the little things!
Ok, instant reaction aside…good to see some resilience/perseverance in not laying down after blowing the lead. Even better to see Higgins convert in closing minutes.
Hopefully this is a starting point. The team is still seriously flawed but if the roster as constructed can play well, maybe they can:
a) unload parts that were previously unmovable
b) avoid moving younger parts for quick fixes.

I was at the game and to say the least
Anisimov and Lisin should be playing at least 15 minutes a night. Big game for Dubi, Kotalik and Higgins (they must have read my stories)

The fact that Brian Boyle (who I’m convinced never adjusted after the growth spurt) gets as much playing time as Anisimov and Lisin is criminal. I see this team’s future, and it involves many more flying water bottles…

If Boyle would only learn to use his big body to his advantage… maybe sending him down to Hartford for a bit will give him some confidence steamrolling people :P
+1 to the UFOs now identified as water bottles originating from the Rangers’ bench.
I'll be another one to add...
that AA and Lisin not getting more time is criminal.
I could care less (well..I like the win..) that Higgins finally scored a goal.
AA and Lisin get much better chances then Higgins..and probably cuz they play half the time, don’t hit home more often.
N8 !
Honestly I was happy that Higgy scored. It was about time he put that puck in the net & hopefully this time it will really spark him to put more pucks in the net.
Yes, Lisin & Anisimov deserve more ice time to show what they can do. Still we need Higgins to try and continue the goal talley as much as possible.

we’ve said a couple times before that Higgins scoring a goal will bring him out of his slump, and guess what it never happend. Hes never coming out of his slump and he has been added to my shit list of Rangers, with the likes of Redden, Rozi, Dru, Brash, and Kotalik. but I will thank him for the win tonight. also thanks to Kotalik for the win as well. I guess my shit list got it done tonight. lol
Higgins still deserves 0 credit. For all the games hes blown for us i can’t just give him a get out of jail free card. Let him be CONSISTENT then we can talk. 1 goal just doesn’t do it for me especially since its his 1st at home. He’ll continue to play for a paycheck and demand more money with the promiss he’ll put up points. Just watch, the first highlight of the free agency market. “The Rangers resign Higgins for a 6 yr 36 million dollar deal”
No you can't say that he is
“out of his scoring slump” but he saved the game tonight, no need to be hard on it.

Chris Higgins was likely not going to be resigned even if he scored 40 goals this season. The Rangers are lucky the East sucks this much.
He might get resigned...
…if he takes a pay cut and plays the third or fourth line once we get rid of the dead weight.
possible, especially since torts has seemed more likely to play the backup vs the west. atl is really struggling so thurs there is possible but then again they have a great offense and it is a road game.
Chad was great this weekend for Hartford btw going 2-0. Sat was a 3-2 win in which he saved 23 of 25 and Grachev scored 2 goals. Sun was a 2-1 win in a shoot-out in which he stopped 30 of 31 shots. So for the weekend 1.44 GAA .946SV%

Finally a home win
i see the points you all are making about players scoring/not scoring … producing/not producing, and i also agree with points on both sides … but the one thing that is getting a little more consistent with these last 9 games are wins & points … 6-1-2 in the last 9, and points in 8 of the last 9 … i guess as long as they’re getting the results, its doesn’t matter a whole lot who is producing or not … like Tortellini says in the rangers commercials … “find a way to get it done”

Does anyone here subscribe to ESPN insider? I saw an insider headline that mentioned Ranger’s trade rumors on their NHL page but couldnt read it cause I dont subscribe. Not that I put much stock in ESPN rumors but is it possible that what we’ve feared all along has begun? …. Sather panic mode… ?

doh
Apparently hitting enter in the subject line posts things:
As the Rangers look to shake up the team, one guy who likely won’t get dealt is Chris Drury.
Ranger Rants writes, “The organization obviously values Chris Drury highly, so even if he didn’t have a no-movement clause and an expensive contract, they’d probably lean toward keeping him.”
Also on the list of players who are staying put are: Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Matt Gilroy and Brandon Dubinsky.
But at this point, if the right trade comes along, GM Glen Sather might pull the trigger.
The cries for the Rangers to make a move are getting louder.
Earlier this week, New York Post’s Larry Brooks, said the New York Rangers need big bodies — “even if it means sacrificing some of the skill level that coach John Tortorella covets in his athletes.”
Meanwhile, the need for a scorer is becoming more evident as Christopher Higgins is struggling mightily and the Rangers offense — outside of Marian Gaborik — is producing little spark.
And with this latest OT loss to the lowly Hurricanes, the Rangers and GM Glen Sather may feel desperate to shake up the team — before Sather loses his job.
However, Ranger Rants writes that it’s not so easy: “Surely GM Glen Sather would trade Christopher Higgins or Ales Kotalik or Wade Redden or Michal Rozsival in a heartbeat. But the last three have contracts, matched with their performances, that will have opposing GMs hanging up the phone.”

It’s like $35 or year or something (I dunno, it auto bills and I don’t pay much attention).
When I signed up they were offering a subscription to ESPN Magazine for free with it (or vice versa, either way Insider+Magazine = $35) I think they still do that, but have no clue really.
But yes, It’s not really worth it for NHL stuff…they don’t seem to try much, they just regurgitate stuff from other sources. The content for their MLB + NFL blogs/rumors and such makes it worth it to me. I don’t even read the magazine, I have it sent to my parents and they give it to the neighbor who enjoys it.

I picked....
Higgy to put one in tonight. But then again I also picked the Jets to win 10 games before the season started at 9 and 7 was a push. Whew. I commented yesterday that I never see Christensen hustle, Eating crow right now. He looked pretty good last night and that burst of speed in the second by Lisin was ridiculous, your are all correct. Bottom line line is AA is slow. Big and skilled but slow. I would imagine that is the only reason for his lack of ice time. His defense has been better lately too.
I disagree about the speed, AA has decent speed and his size is great for dump and chase. His hands are soft enough to let him carry the puck nicely as well. It’s the fear of inexperience. You don’t want someone getting more ice time if they might make Gilroy-esque errors. I’d like to see Torts alternate him and Christensen on the first powerplay unit once the team hits another rough patch. Right now, he’s gotta hold steady.
I disagree back
This team has a serious identity crisis. They’re trying to win now with a rebuilding roster. Gilroy-esque errors will happen but you have to let them happen, you can’t bury the rookies and potentially stunt their development because you’re trying to sneak in to the 8 seed and are worried they’ll make a mistake.
They have to let AA play. Yes you give up some defense and the team is more vulnerable to mistakes with him and Lisin out there…but their relative +/- are the highest among the guys not on the 1st line, so it’s not like they slant the ice in one direction. They’ll make up for the defensive lapses with offensive skill.

Well is Torts under contract? How does that work with coaches? I agree with you about what should be done but I can only imagine that his priority is making that 8th seed for the sake of his own job security.
Thus sums up the problem
If the team just sucked Oilers style, they could play the kids and move on with things. But Sather’s trying to save his job, so he’s been plugging in stuff to keep us in mediocrity hell, when they should just gut the team and start over, which subsequently handcuffs Tortorella
I know it’s alot easier to write than do. It’s a shame really.

is it just me or is this guy Antropov Jr.? Slow, gangly and a generally ugly skater but soft hands and nice touch around the net.
Anisimov is actually pretty fast
and I like his skating ability, his shot will come no worries there. Heres to him seeing more ice time

hah too true. And for what it’s worth (which may be a lot actually) I do believe that over his short and up-and-down career he’s scored the most goals (or maybe it’s tallied the most points) against Brodeur. But don’t hold me to that.

Higgins signs 6 year $36 Million extension
Slither was just waiting for him to score a goal at MSG to make the announcemement. “A million dollars a goal…a complete bargain I tell ya. Just ask Reds!” Slather was quoted as saying at the presser.
In seriousness though, I may be picking a bad time to criticize him because he is skating well (Flyers debacle excluded), but Dubi has absolutely NO finish. Between last night, the Carolina games and the Flyers game he’s had no fewer than 7 sparkling opportunities from excellent scoring positions and has managed to fire the puck directly in to the goalies crest, pads or glove every time. Is it just me or has anybody else noticed?
Might be right
But I haven’t really noticed, nor does it really bother me.
Dubi’s one of the few guys on the team that can clean up a rebound or deflect a puck, so he gets a pass on not being the world’s greatest finisher. It’d be nice to have a team full of snipers like Gaborik who can pick spots and beat a goalie clean, but that’s not the case. Scoring goals consistently requires deflections, screens and rebounds, and this team doesn’t do any of that and thus struggles to score goals. Dubi can, so you don’t have to worry about the other stuff that much.

I hear you on his deflection and rebound skills but his inability to snipe is what is holding him back from being a great player. He has moves and can get him self in prime scoring positions off of the cycle and off of the rush but he can’t finish. I think it’s the difference of him being a 20-25 goal scorer and a 35-40 goal scorer.
Oh I loved Erik Christiansen’s goal. Great hustle to get at the net and a cheeky one handed flick. That was pretty good.

Henrik hurting??? tirred??
Anyone getting the feeling the Henrik might be hurting a bit? Or just exhausted…mentally and physically? After some saves he looks like he’s laboring to recover….I sure hope not…but he sure can’t be bewtween the pipes every night….and he could sure use 2 weeks off…instead of the olympics….just some thoughts here.
Was just thinking the same thing.
He looks sluggish, trouble fine-tuning rebounds, slow to react to second chance shots.

I saw the other day..
he was trying to get up after stopping a puck, and seems to jam his leg against the post.
It was right before he let up a goal against Carolina actually..
N8 !
Dubinsky has some finish and if you notice Duby has a better SPCT than everyone except AA and Gabby. The reason i can deal with him when it comes to not scoring goals like a maniac is because he creates plays, passes and gives his body to the game like Cally does, 4goals in 10 games may not be all star caliber but thats exactly what i expect from Duby every ten games… do that for a year and you have 25-35 goals..
Feeding Gabby
is really what he needs to work on even though hes doing a great job now i want them to get better together so in maybe a year there chemistry together will be as solid as can be.
Some Reflections...
Ok, so I’m up in Montreal and this is the first time in a minute that I’ve been able to watch the team skate aside from the recap clips on nhl.com. i also listen to the games on the internet when possible. A couple of thoughts. My impression is that our problems really stem from a weak defensive corp. After seeing the game I totally agree with the comments on here about Redden. He just doesn’t project urgency or display the kind of guiding force that we need for our young blueliners. Why is it that a teenager like MDZ is always in the mix, creating opportunities, throwing hits, making the outlet passes. This is what Redden was paid for and he seems to be really, really throwing a wrench into the system. Our other solid guys are Gilroy and Stall and they are both KIDS.
Given that we have a young and talented but inexperienced defense, it looks to me like Torts has had to change his accustomed game plan. Instead of an attacking, rushing team, he’s working on making us into a tight two way, defensive minded offensive team. In other words, we try to lock down and take the goals when we can get them…problem is, they don’t come. But, I will say, that the rangers are starting to gel with that approach. I take back a lot of the negative things I was saying about Drury because I thought he played an excellent game last night. He looked excellent on the penalty kill and definitely showed leadership in terms of smart, responsible hockey. And I swear to you that I was thinking this before his late goal, but Higgins looked really good along the boards and keeping puck control…correct me if I’m wrong, perhaps I need to see more, but I don’t think the turnovers which led to Boston’s zone clearing or odd man rushes can be put on Higgy’s doorstep. Like Drury, he was also playing very good two-way hockey. Can’t say the same for Avery and even though I love him it seems to me that he may be enjoying the NYC nightlife too much. He’s off his knocked off his feet and his game way, way too much and is winning less of the battles that he used to for loose pucks. He simply doesn’t appear mentally or physically sharp and, I’m sorry, but I’ve seen this in Ranger players for years. My opinion is that he’s drinking too much and chasing women. It happens when farm boys from Canada hit the city and start to become mesmerized by the velvet carpet…I’m telling you, he’s a Burress waiting to happen. Trade him NOW! Lots of teams would love to have him and he’s a great asset to a club, and a media market, when he’s in shape and urgent.
Look, we can’t have it both ways. Yes, we need both Drury and Higgins to close when they get the chance, but its also about the realities of their on ice duties. We NEED to get rid of Redden or Avery and replace them with a SOLID defenseman who will lighten the burden on Gilroy, DZ, Stall and Lundquist. Allow them to play, as in grow and make the occasional mistake without ruinous results. This will also free up our offensive game. If we can do that any number of these guys we rant about, most of whom are proven 20 goal scorers will begin to light up the back of the net.
In the meantime, I think the stretch against the bottom has been very productive for us. We know our limits, we know our strengths, we came out something like FIVE games over where we were a few weeks ago…remember being two games under five hundred? Lets give Torts some props for the way he’s balancing the psychology of the bench and the roster. Not an easy task at all. He just may be getting his message across and its showing in slow but steady improvement and stability on and off the ice. I also credit Sather for not panicking like a lot of us are. We’re at the midpoint and the next month is our first REAL test of the season. Oh, and I wasn’t all that impressed by Gabby last night. I hope he’s not paying more attention to the NHL scoring race than the overall collective dynamic of the team. I’d much rather have him come in fifth or sixth in scoring and see a more two-way effort than the one I witnessed last night…then again, it did feel like he was a rocket waiting for a teammate to work with.
What do you think?
Peace y’all,
voice
Wow; outstanding post.

i know that....
i was merely suggesting that we sacrifice him for a good, solid one…and we can’t get anyone to touch redden. leetch had his boomer…that’s what we need on this club for mdz.
I have no problem geting rid of Avery or Higgins for a solid stand up defensive man. Rather get rid of Voros, Barshier, Reden, Rozi or Drury…
Higgin curse may be broken… but he has had way to many chance to bury the puck that he faned on, missed the net, and shot directly in the goalies chest. WAY TO MANY.
I missed most of last nights game. I have only missed about 12 periods all season and I see your points… but here are some comments.
We had a good strech against some bad teams…. but I’m not ready to give Tort lots of credit. He seems to be throwing ideas up against the wall and see what sticks. There has been so many line changes. I was at the game Saturday was sitting next to a hockey fan in town from LA and he asked who’s on your top line. Sadly I said it changes every game… wait… every few shifts. Now torts seems to have adapted his style of play to better fit the player as of late… but what took so long? So much for safe is death (not that I agreed with it).
Avery hasn’t been great… but for a short strech he seemed like one of our beter players yet his ice time was still around 7 minutes a game. I don’t think Torts has done much to motivate him… In fact for a while it looked like Torts had him neutered.
As for Avery’s worth to other teams… you can argue that a team that needs to put fans in the seats and up its TV ratings, Avery would be the perfect shot in the leg. However I don’t think anyone was looking at him when we aquired him. I think he is considered a toxic asset by many. I think the better option would be to get the most out of him (the coaches job). I’m saying we need to keep him, but he’s closer to a solution then a problem.
Now… Getting rid of Redden? Yes please! but how? Same for Rozy, Drury, and Kotalik.
Higgens does the small things right… that is getting old. He won us one last night. but he needs to score more end of story. He’s had plenty of chances. I have no problem trading him either.
Like many have said. Lets get Lisen and AA integrated into the game more.
ok...
some very good points, most of them i agree with but…
unlike a lot of other guys on the team, higgens does seem to create many of the opportunities he doesn’t capitalize on and i think that its due to the backward, defensive zone leaning philosophy of the club. i’ve watched him skate, both at yale in the NCAA and up here in Montreal and he does know how to finish but not like a gabby. when he was putting up higher numbers in Montreal he a) played with a very sound overall club and b) was getting criticized for not balancing his play…i.e., doing the “little things.” also, its one thing to get a chance on a rush, its another thing to get chances when the team is able to set up shop in the offensive zone…something i note the rangers are having a hard time doing. there are guys in the league who are great on shootouts but don’t get much ice time during the game because the can’t do the “little things.” they’re good at flying in on a rush and doing a nifty stick bob to pull down a goaltenders pants…but digging in the corners and keeping the puck in at the blueline is another tale.
by the way, i hate this term, “little things.” it basically means doing everything that’s very, very important for a solid hockey club. we like to note how well lundquist has been playing but i bet he’d be the first to note that he’s getting help from drury and higgens who are sliding back deeper into the zone to clog up the front of the ranger net and get those pucks into the corner for a scramble.
Torts has been juggling a lot because players are injured and combinations either aren’t working or other combinations are working and need to be compensated for. we got hit by a string of bad injuries which started the slide.
didn’t you think christian fit pretty well up front? once that started working, did he keep juggling him off? i didn’t notice…
by the way, if you’re going to integrate Lisen and AA, you’re only asking for more juggling. he knows they’re there…but perhaps stabilizing certain key players is more important right now? just a thought.
I had big hopes for Higgins when he came aboard… I’m hoping he can turn it around… Time will tell.
I wouldn’t blame his play on him getting back on D or team philosophy. He’s missed plenty of good opertunities plane and simple. To his credit he has created many of those opertunities.
In the Mid terms grade thread I just added my thougts on Torts. And you are correct that any line change is one more chage. Lisen’s speed and the way AA can shield the puck are both great to watch. Because of that and that I believe they really can help this team both short and long term I want to see them on the ice more.
I think (and hope) Torts could be good for this club in the long run, but I don’t think he’s been doing a good job so far.
Christianson looks good. He hasn’t been juggled as much as I thought. I didn’t think he would last on the top line more than a few shifts… but it has only been a few games.
thanks...
like i said, i haven’t been able to watch the games as much as i need to in order to make accurate assessments…most of this is just coming from watching a handful of games this year and i definitely appreciate the “banter” on this site. for sure, part of my defense of higgins has to do with my rooting for the guy because i want him to succeed…not sure that’s enough tho.
the coming games will provide a huge test.
v
kolvachuck to the rangers ??
a rumor on n.h.l.snipers dot com has the rangers sending dubinsky and higgins plus 2 first round picks for ilya the great . folks you know i said many times before we need scoring but to not get a #1 scoring center in return because kolvachuck is a winger and to give up 2 first round picks i think i will pass…
