Team USA Defeats Canada to Win Gold in World Juniors
Believe it or not, the USA U-20 team, led by team Captain and Rangers prospect Derek Stepan, has defeated team Canada 6-5 in overtime in Saskatoon, Canada to win the IIHF World Junior Championship Tournament as well as the Gold Medal. I guess the best word to describe the win would be resilient, as the Americans rebounded from coughing up a two-goal lead late in the third, but displayed composure and came out with a quick game-winner in overtime.
The United States gave up the first goal to Luke Adam of team Canada about three minutes into the game. It looked as if nerves had control of the U.S. in the first five minutes, but once they were warmed up, they really got it going. Rangers prospect Chris Kreider answered with a goal of his own when he entered the offensive zone and sent a wrister over Canadian goaltender Allen to make it 1-1. From there, things got a bit out of hand with three goals scored in the matter of 2:07. Blueshirts Prospect Ryan Bourque fed Canucks Property Jordan Schroeder, who put one over Allen to give USA the temporary lead. However, Greg Nemsiz found the back of the net for Canada, meaning the game was tied at two heading into the intermission.
On a carry-over powerplay to open the second, U.S. defenseman John Carlson slapped home his first of the game, putting his squad up 3-2. About five minutes after, Lee, U.S. goalie, managed to pop a rebound high up in the air, over his shoulder and into the net. That would be it for him, as he was pulled from the game by the coach, Dean Blais. That saw back-up netminder Jack Campbell entering the game to try and solidify things in net for the "Yankees" as those up north address us as. The decision of putting Campbell in goal paid off big time. The youngster stood on his head, not allowing any goals until the final minutes off the third.
The third stanza began with Jerry D'Amigo and Rangers Prospect Derek Stepan netting back-to-back goals for the United States. Now here is where the U.S. made a mistake that Ranger fans know all too well from their time with former coach Tom Renney. They went into the neutral zone trap, which eventually failed them. Among two frantic plays with Campbell on his back, Jordan Eberle (Known as Mr. Clutch among Canada fans) scored twice in four minutes to send the game to overtime in a 5-5 tie.
Overtime started with Blueshirts Prospect Ryan Bourque, who reminds me so much of Ryan Callahan, hitting and creating chances. U.S.A. was clearly dominating in the fourth period, and then defensemen John Carlson, the hero, rifled a wristshot into the back of the net, silencing a rowdy Canadian crowd which watched the ecstatic Americans pile off the bench and jump on top of Carlson.
This was a huge win for USA hockey, but when looking at the tournament as a whole, it was also a huge win for the New York Rangers. Drafting guru Gordie Clark must have been watching this all unfold with a smile on his face, as all three of his drafted players played a major role in the success of the United States. Stepan had a goal and an assist in the contest, Kreider had a goal and Bourque with an assist. Stepan, who has Datsyuk-like hands, finished first in scoring in the entire tournament, Kreider was one of the top goal-scorers on the U.S. club, and Bourque was trusted in all situations by Dean Blais, including two shifts in the rather brief overtime period. We may be suffering now, but this Rangers team has a bright future ahead of them with these kids, just as long as GM Glen Sather does not make any ignorant mistakes which force us to lose these players. Congratulations to Team USA on a tremendous victory and tournament!

It was such a great game to watch. Kreider’s goal in the first was an absolute beauty. If we can keep these guys around to develop, New York is going to be polishing silver in a few years.

Stepan, Kreider, and Bourque impressed the hell out of me. What’s the soonest any of them might be playing at the Garden?
stepan has a shot to be ready next year, if not for sure the year after. bourque and kreider are more like 3 at least.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
i believe he will leave Wisconsin after this year, get his deal and either make the club or go to hartford.

Watching this game gave me a strange feeling, kinda like pride, but calling it that wouldn’t be completely correct.
I’m just really excited for the future. Bourque, Stepan, and Kreider will all crack the NHL, hopefully all for us.
Plus figure in a potential defensive core of Mcdonaugh, Klassen, Sangs, Heiks, Staal, and a still-growing Zotts, nevermind the fact that we have Gaborki and Lundqvist for the next several years.
The future is bright.
I agree. I think in 2-3 years the Garden will be the place to be again, as both the Knicks and Rangers are bound to improve.
staal is only 22. he turns 23 next week

Great to hear
But really guys, let’s temper our expectations a bit here. These guys are all at least 2-3 years away from being ready to contribute at the NHL level. A lot can happen during that time, especially not with a GM like Slither.

Let’s hope the Dolan’s don’t trade any of these prospects for FoodTV.

In the weeks leading up to the WJC, there are those who believe that Stepan may leave Wisconsin this spring, and that he has a chance to make the Rangers roster next fall.
His play the past 2 weeks did nothing but reinforce that.
He may or may not be ready in 9 months. But it’s something positive to look forward to (as well as McDonagh – his older Wisconsin teammate).
and the best part is he wont even turn 20 until June of this year.

USA USA USA!!!!
Leaving for Canada now. Hopefully my son’s team is just as successful this week. Going to wear my USA jersey with pride.
i thought
Stepan was the strongest player on the ice, period. he’s one of those guys who can set the tempo of a game. congratulations to the team. they showed lots of character.
I am so happy and proud of our kids
What a fabulous game and a hell of a shot by Carlson to get the OT Winner. What a No-Look rip to fake out the goalie and smack the back of the net. Kreider, Stepan & Bourque are fabulous and I can’t wait to see these kids in a Rangers Jersey once they are done with their college or junior league careers.
The future is looking bright for these kids. I can’t wait to see them all wear Rangers Jerseys. At the same time I am proud of our American Hockey players. U-17 & U-20 champions. Next stop is the Olympics and once again it’s on Canadian Ice. Maybe a hat trick if this performence sparks our American NHL’ers.
Agree that Kreider and Stepan were two most effective players for Team USA
but to be fair the heart of this team seemed to be Jerry D’Amigo much in the same way that The Rangers Mattie Gilroy might not have had his best season last year for BU stat-wise, but without him they would not have accomplished the run of the Icebreaker, the Beanpot, the Denver Cup, The HE Regular Season, HE Tourney, NCAA Frozen Four winner and NATIONAL CHAMPS … Just as a nod was given to Gilroy in his service to NCAA hockey with his lifetime achievement Hobey last year, D’Amigo was the heart of this team that was NOT ON PAPER the best Team USA that could have been put together, but last year’s team of all-stars stalled and we were determined to learn from our mistakes. And for all those who are saying Billy Guerin and not Chris Drury should be the vet on the Olympic team, I say that Drury – who will always be a Terrier, a Ranger, A Team USA member, and a Trumbull Little Leaguer to me no matter what uni he dons – will teach the young ones on the 2010 Olympic team THE RIGHT WAY TO APPROACH THE GAME, should wear the ‘C’, and for a kid who beat Chinese Tai Pei back when they chose from the best of 250,000 unlike the current Tai Pei teams, I like some experience and you don’t get more than a kid who had his biggest sporting moment against Tai Pei at the age of 12, won a NCAA title and a hobey under Coach Parker, AND delivered, as Mattie Gilroy will soon help do as well, a Stanley Cup to the Rangers … That is a kid I pick first for my team in any sport, any time. Congrats USA for a fantastic WORLD JUNIORS… and they should have at least two more solid tourneys as long as Jack Campbell, probably the biggest North American Goalie phenom since DiPietro, stays playing the game for the U20 team and doesn’t jump to the NHL too early. That said, if the Rangers could steal him in THE NEXT DRAFT as a late first rounder, he could anchor the Blueshirts in net for a dozen years. And yes, Derek Stepan will indeed be something special as well.
