Rangers Analysis: Trades on the horizon?

I will be the first one to tell you to disregard any hockey rumors you come across from non-credentialed websites. In fact, on this site we have bashed and ignored rumors coming from sites that rhyme with bockeyhuzz on almost a daily basis. Those sites do nothing productive for hockey in any way, shape or form.

Recently RangerSmurf (hat tip to you my friend) broke the story that the Rangers might be in play for Andrew Cogliano, and they might be. That, however, is not the point. What is the point is that the Rangers brass is preparing to do something--or so it would seem.

Steve Zipay had an interesting tidbit in his blog saying:

Doug Risebrough, the former WildGM who was hired as a consultant by old friend Glen Sather and has been scouting teams in the West (loves Chicago, who doesn't?), was here for a private summit with the boss. Slats ushered him into his office halfway thru practice.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Andrew Gross had his own say on the matter after the Rangers lost to the Hurricanes in OT, this actually circulated here a bit but for those of you who missed it here it is:

For this almost all of the blame has to come from the personnel: Too many guys contributing far too little. But it’s tough to see what can be done to correct that before the trade deadline, there are not many desirable parts that the Rangers would consider trading. Surely GM Glen Sather would trade Christopher Higgins or Ales Kotalik or Wade Redden or Michal Rozsivalin a heartbeat. But the last three have contracts, matched with their performances, that will have opposing GMs hanging up the phone. Higgins is going to be a free agent anyway so he’d return very little even if Sather does find a trade partner. The players other teams would want: Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, Matt Gilroy, Brandon Dubinsky, Sather is not likely to trade. And the organization obviously values Chris Drury highly, so even if he didn’t have a no-movement clause and an expensive contract, they’d probably lean toward keeping him.

And then in a more recent Steve Zipay post he said:

We're hearing rumblings from agents that with the Olympic trade freeze, which ends four days before the NHL trade deadline, some teams who've determined that they are out of contention in mid-February before the Games (Carolina, perhaps Anaheim, Toronto, Edmonton, Columbus) will be shopping UFAs and RFAs in earnest. Saku Koivu, anybody? More on that front soon...

So really let's be honest here, anyone can speculate so be careful with what you believe. What I can tell you is that the Rangers are talking to other teams regarding a move, I can guarentee it. Want to know how I know this? Hockey GM's are always in talks, or keeping their ears close to the wall or picking up the phone and "checking in" on other GM's. It doesn't mean that anything will come from it, and 90% of the time nothing does. But everyone--even the Capitals, Penguins and even the Red Wings--would be willing to hear what a team has to offer, they would be crazy not to.

So is it possible that Cogliano is on the Rangers radar? Of course it is, but who knows what will come of it. I can tell you this though, a reliable source is telling me that Bockeyhuzz doesn't (E5).

Pass on Cogliano. The guy can’t get off the 3rd and 4th lines of Edmonton. But I’m interested to see if Sather tries to make a splash by bringing in another big time forward. Let’s hope Silverhair doesn’t train our kiddie pool.

worried

most of the ranger fans i’ve talked to seem nervous about any trades, and not for a bad reason. we finally have some TREMENDOUS prospects that we don’t want to see moved, so anytime a trade rumor or speculation is brought up, ranger fans are getting a little worried and anxious, but its actually a very good thing and a good sign about the pipeline.

the bad part is that slats is the GM, and anything is possible. but his trades are as good as his FA signings are bad, so theres probably nothing to worry about even if anything goes down. i’d say kreider and stepan are basically untouchable, and bourque and mcdonagh are prob pretty guarded as well. also, he has been firm in not pulling the trigger with guys like dubi, cally, and staal, so unless a HUGE name is coming back (Mr. Kovalchuk, possibly?), i don’t see any of our broadway gems going anywhere.

i am so tired of giving up future shit to squeak in 7th or 8th just to say they made the playoffs and add some revenue because of the playoff games. Think about last year we gave up a 2nd to Toronto to get Antropov and while he played well and we almost beat Washington, they let him walk (rightly for what he wanted) and we lost a 2nd round pick that could be added to our system and with the result Gord has been getting that’s a lot of value right now. let this team die, keep the youth and the picks sell what you can (prospal, maybe girardi) to get more picks, and move on.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

There's very few Rangers I would be upset to lose for Kovalchuk...

Del Zotto, Callahan, Anisimov and Staal being the only ones.

My ideal trade would be Rozival, Dubinsky, Sanguinetti Kovalchuk.

This would be contingent on getting him under contract for the forseeable future and sending Redden to Hartford.

Think of Kovy and Gabby on the same team! Talk about some scoring. What a PP unit we would have. MDZ playing QB with Cally working low and Gabby+Kovy creating space for Kotalik’s booming shot. I can dream.

by DrewDC11 on Jan 6, 2010 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Rozival, Dubinsky, Sanguinetti for Kovalchuk.*********

by DrewDC11 on Jan 6, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

except the rumor for Kovy was adding 1st and 2nd next year and 1st in 2011 what you offered.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

The “updated” rumor said Rozi, Dubi, Higgins, either Sangs or McDonagh, plus 2010 1st and 2nd and 2011 1st.

As we beat to death in the other thread – too high a cost in picks. Way too high.

by dbmaven on Jan 6, 2010 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

you are correct i forgot higgins, i must have just missed the net. lol.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention

That Atlanta has all but said they will not allow Kovalchuk to negotiate a contract prior to being traded.

So you’d be giving up a butt load of stuff for a rental. You have to be 10256% sure you can sign him to pull the trigger when the cost is so high.

How does that make sense from Atlanta’s perspective? The guy is said to have little interest staying there so why wouldn’t they try to maximaize their return for him by allowing a perspective trading partner to negotiate with his agent once a deal is agreed upon in principle but prior to completeing a deal?

I’m all for standing my ground and having some spine but it seems to me like they’d be cutting off their nose to spite their face…unless they thought they could still re-sign him at some point.

by Twigs on Jan 6, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

I'm looking for the source again

But I definitely read that at some point, i think in December. I agree it doesn’t appear to make much sense but that was their stance at one point.

i read it as well about a week ago.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

I guess that’s why they are the Trashers!!!

I just dont see how we could afford to bring in a guy like Kovy without shedding at least one or two of our albatross contracts.

by Twigs on Jan 6, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

We can't

Which is why it’s unrealistic to think they will either trade for or sign him.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Jan 6, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

well signing in the offseason depending on what kind of deal he wanted would be possible if we sack sather and drop redden rozi in the minors, but not realistic.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

I choose my words carefully. Didn’t say impossible…just unrealistic. Really, really unrealistic.

as did i. if he wants 10 mil a year it is impossible as well. lol.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

pure speculation on my part...

but after reading zip’s blog (and the excerpt here) i’m wondering if we’re looking more at o’sullivan than cogliano (if those edmonton rumors are true). risebrough, apparently our western scout specialist, was the man who originally drafted o’sullivan in minnesota, and i’m thinking maybe its patty o’ we’re looking at rather than cogs. pure speculation, but the dots connect easily.

LETS GO RANGERS

by sloppyseconds on Jan 6, 2010 1:40 PM EST reply actions

i have always liked o’sullivan and he is less of a midget than cogliano. if it is just a swap of underachievers like higgins for o’sullivan who both expire at the end of the year, that is fine.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

If we’re just getting underacheivers, why ditch Higgins? I’d rather keep someone who is good on both sides of the puck than trade for an unknown quantity.

by DrewDC11 on Jan 6, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

cause o’sullivan is not liked by quinn so he has been playing on the 4th line, but still has 22 pts. higgins despite scoring the other night (and being given ice time repeatedly on the top lines) cant hit the ocean from the beach and has 11. o’sullivan can also play center. like i said both are underacheiving. higgins -9 would dispute the good on both sides of the puck argument to an extent, but i understand ur point.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

I always take plus minus stats with a grain of salt. A couple of blowout games, like the ones we have had, and the stat is kinda skewed.

Advanced +/-

Whoops

Stupid enter button again.

O’Sullivan is -1.73
Higgins is -1.2

Higgins has the the better QUALCOMP, but also the better QUALTEAM.

O’Sullivan’s been on the ice for a near team high 33 goals against (only Horcoff is worse). Higgins has been on the ice for a team worst 24 (tied with Kotalik)

They’re basically the same type of underachiever

well i would agree and would also to be good on both sides of the puck you have to create goals which he hasnt.

for those who want to make a trade to salvage this year, might as well go kind of big or go home as far as i am concerned. cally, rozi, sangs/gilroy/girardi, 2nd rounder to florida for horton and mccabe.

not sure if florida would do this, but there are numerous reasons why this is both a buy and sell move for the rangers. horton is a 1st line player who can play center or wing. he is only 24, signed for 3 years after this at dirt cheap for what he produce (4 mil). McCabe has a huge shot and can play nasty, also only has 1 year left on his deal so we save a year in the mccabe rozi swap. Losing cally hurts because i love how he plays, but let’s be honest he is what he is which is a great team guy, energy guy who is topping out at 25G 45pts. Florida gets an upside move in either Gilroy or Sangs or steady girardi (who i think is gone after the year anyway), plus the pick . The reason i do it is we get a young stud, signed cheap for years, upgrade rozi and if we arent a contender this year we can sell prospal and get picks back close to the deadline. Cap wise this is a much better move than a Kovalchuk as well, obviously less offense but half the cost as well.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:08 PM EST reply actions

I like it

But you’re right, I don’t know if or why Florida would do it. At least it’s more realistic than Kovalchuk in blue.

I think they should be selling, but that’s as unrealistic as getting Kovalchuk.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Jan 6, 2010 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

i agree they should sell but Sather wont cause he would have to admit he screwed up and that isnt happening. Florida probably wouldnt cause they really need to make the playoffs. if i was florida actually i would call up the flyers and tell them they can have vokoun for carter. Clemensen and Markstrom could get the panthers in the playoffs in net.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed!

BUT…selling would require Sather to admit his mistakes which, outside of buying out Holik and trading Gomez, he has failed to do since he’s been here.

by Twigs on Jan 6, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

and as i said to me this is a combination of buying and selling.

by Michael Gleich on Jan 6, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, Andrew Cogliano, but you have fully exited the interest of these comments.

by Moshe52792 on Jan 6, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Depends

If we trade one for another..it balances.

For instance trading Higgins for Cogliano would not only be saving 0.5m, but it also gives up a UFA that we don’t control for a RFA that we do. I still don’t think that’s a trade we should do, just pointing out that there may be an upside depending on players involved.
