Rangers Recap: Dubi, Christensen, and Lundqvist lead the way as Rangers pound Bruins 3-1
The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers have had some great battles in their eighty year plus rivalry, it's really a shame they only meet four times a year under the current NHL schedule format.
Henrik Lundqvist continued his domination of the Bruins, stopping 29 shots and leading the Rangers to a 3-1 win. Henrik is now 13-3-2 lifetime against Boston.
Michael Del Zotto took advantage of a rare mistake by Zdeno Chara, made a beautiful move driving to the net to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game.
"Dubi made a great play drawing that first defender and he dropped it back to me, and Chara came after me and I just tried to go wide, I was able to beat him and go to the net. I kinda knew Tim Thomas likes to challenge a bit, so I went 5-hole, and I was lucky enough for it to go in for me." Zots said when asked about the goal.
Later in the period, with the Rangers on the power play, Marco Sturm was breaking into the Rangers zone shorthanded, was held up by Ales Kotalik, and awarded a penalty shot. Lundqvist kept Sturm out of the net, however, to keep the Rangers on top after one despite being outshot 11-7.
Brandon Dubinsky, who assisted on the Del Zotto goal, scored his eighth of the season in the second period, with Erik Christensen getting the assist. Dubinsky would add an assist in the third period, and now has 23 points on the season. Rangers dominated the second period, outshooting the Bruins 21-3, and picking up three power plays.
Christensen continued his strong play by scoring just thirty seven seconds into the final period, a wrister past Tim Thomas to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead. He now has seven points in the last six games for the Rangers, not bad for a guy plucked off the scrap heap. He told MSG he feels like this may be his last chance in the NHL, and he is playing like it.
Like Monday night at MSG, the Rangers carried a shutout into the waning minutes of the game, and just like Monday night, they were unable to keep the Bruins off the score sheet. Dennis Wideman scored with under four minutes remaining to deny Lundqvist again.
The Bruins again mounted a furious attempt to come back in this game, but the Rangers and Lundqvist were able to make the 3-1 score stand up.
All in all a complete effort by the Rangers, who managed to stay out of the penalty box until the third period, showed strong skating legs all day long, and played a good physical game. Rangers defense joined the play a little more in this game, probably taking advantage of the lack of firepower on the Boston side with Marc Savard and Patrice Bergeron both out with injuries. Rangers defense pinched often in this game, mostly on the right wing boards.
More after the jump........
Final Thoughts:
- Our own Ranger Smurf made a good point in the open game thread: With Tim Thomas on the bench for the extra attacker, Marc Staal hit the post with the net empty, seems like the Rangers have done that about 3 or 4 times this year.
- I don't want to say they take a lot of dives, but the Bruins do seem to "embellish" a lot, don't they?
- All of a sudden, the Rangers are in 6th place in the conference, just a point behind Boston. They are 6-1-3 in their last 10.
- So far, with the schedule not in their favor for January, they've managed to pick up seven of ten possible points this month. Not bad at all.

couldn’t join you for the game since my stream was pretty bad without the autoupdate, just wanted to say it was another good effort, i’m really pleased at the job christensen is doing, and MDZ is looking very confident and comfortable. dubi had a great game, when is he going to get that C, LW tag in fantasy hockey?!
great job boys, keep up the good work!

I never knew that the Bruins were such divers

hey hey hey I wan't complaining about the calls themselvs
but can you tell me that Sturm didn’t dive? Or Krejci at the end of the game? Honestly, yes we got some benefits from the refs tonight but that penalty shot was bogus man.

Just because they never happen doesn’t mean it was bogus. It looked pretty legit from my seat.

Sturm also looked pretty gassed before he took the shot. I think all the Bruins are pretty tired.

if you watch the replays (I'm assuming you were at the game)
it was a blatant dive.

you only see it live, but if you listen to the Bruins announcer right after it happens before Sturm shoots he says “thats just me but you take what you are given.” Really look at Kotalik’s stick, it in no way pulls or tugs

Now there’s only one angle there, but it looks like the stick is at Sturm’s ankle about when he falls. If it is a dive it’s not on par with Jagr Kills Avery or anything.
Of course we’re both biased, but I’m definitely right here.
Definitely.

For all the crap calls the Bruins have had against them this week I don’t even care if it’s a dive. I’m just happy one went in our favor.

We will agree to disagree,
if you find a replay of the game watch the multiple angles. Regardless I hate diving in Hockey, it’s horrible for the sport.

i understand getting crap calls. thats what happens when u play the penguins 6 times a year. especially 3 in their arena.
but yeah diving is absolutely terrible for the sport. i loose respect for a player when they dive.
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Penalty Shot?
Lets also add that for a penalty shot you need to have control of the puck… wellll… not only did he not have control but the puck never even touched his stick! - Regardless I’d rather have Hank take one penalty shot than 5 rapid fire shots on the PK

8-1-3 in last 12
4-0-2 in last 6
oh and yes that was a COMPLETE DIVE by sperm to get the penalty shot. good thing henrik denied him. he didnt deserve to get that chance
great win all around..
the game against the sens is key. hopefully we can move up to the 5th spot and hold it. maybe even narrow the gap on the elite teams in the east
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
the game against the Devils come Tuesday
is even more important, but yes taking 2 from the Sens is a biggie

i think players should get suspended a game for a dive. it will stop the diving thats for sure
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
if you are actually given a diving penalty
then it is reviewed and you are usually expensive

can we get a petition going for the NHL to change the scheduling so that teams play who they need to play instead of teams in other conferences
it will never happen and here is why
While the West has superior teams the East has superior players. In the "rivalry" schedule when each team played every team in their division 8 times you could go two to three years without seeing a western team. Which means that: Crosby, Malkin, Brodeur, Lundqvist, Gaborik, Ovechkin, Green, Carter, etc etc, don’t see a Western team for a few years which is a big problem for the NHL.

but u would also have ovechkin/crosby 8 times a year along with lundqvist broduer and avery broduer 8 times a year
Yeah, but they’re not worried about those markets. They’re worried about the other markets that are struggling and need the nhl stars to visit more than once every couple years.

exactly. the only way they can bring a draw to some of those sturggling teams is to have them play star players

Another complete Win
The 60-minute efforts are starting to pile up…..definitely a good sign. 8-1-3 in their last twelve. Cannot do much better than that.
