Rangers Recap: Biron Shuts Leafs' Offense Off, Rangers Win 2-1
It took about two weeks, but the New York Rangers finally have their second win of the season with tonight's 2-1 effort against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Everything seemed to come together for the Blueshirts in this tilt. The offense created many scoring chances, the defense played their best game of the season and goaltending was incredible. All of that, along with some hard work, proved that New York does not need their top scorer in order to capture two points against top teams in the league.
The Rangers had a game-high 15 shots on goal in the first period, two of which they were able to get by Toronto goaltender Jonas Gustavsson. The first came off a great effort by rookie Derek Stepan, who worked his way through the defense and eventually to the net. He was able to sneak it past Gustavsson, but the puck sat on the line for Ruslan Fedotenko to bang home for his first as a Ranger. Exactly sixty-one seconds later Michal Rozsival made a great pass to Artem Anismov for a redirection goal at the top of the crease. Smart thinking by Artem to get to the net there, but even smarter of Rozy to get the puck to him.
Also in the first, Derek Boogaard dropped the gloves with former Blueshirt Colton Orr in front of the benches. In what was his first fight as a Ranger, Boogaard got some nice shots in on Orr, but Colton did take the big guy down in the end.
There was no scoring in the second period, which was directly due to the stellar defensive work by the Rangers, in addition to sharp netminding from Marty Biron. I thought that the Leafs kind of took control of the tempo in this period, which was the only period that they outshot their opponent. But the Rangers did a marvelous job of keeping the Toronto forwards to the outside and if they did get off shots, Biron had an answer for all of them. At that point I did not think the Leafs were going to be able to break the ice and get on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately Colby Armstrong (of all people) proved me wrong when he capitalized on a rebound in the slot to cut the Rangers' lead to 2-1 in the third. I think we were all sweating by now because far too many times have we seen this team collapse once their two-goal lead in the third was chopped to one. However, a commercial break followed by a solid penalty kill helped regain the composure of John Tortorella's squad and they were able to hold the lead until the final buzzer.
Many guys on the team played exceptionally well tonight, but player of the game, for me, has to go to Marty Biron. Biron's 24 saves helped backstop the Rangers to two points on this night, and even though that is not a large number, the quality of some of those saves was unbelievable. Take, for example, his stop on Kris Versteeg on the breakaway shortly after the Leafs had scored to make it 2-1. We likely would have been headed to overtime if not for that stop, but Marty stayed in position and made a slick save with the glove. Position is the key word there, because he was constantly in perfect position throughout the night.
Moving down the line, the defense, like I said, played their best this evening. Starting with Dan Girardi, shot blocking (over 30 of them) was a big part of their success. The Leafs could not get many through to Biron due to all of the bodies in blue being thrown in front of the puck. In addition to that their neutral play was just what Torts wanted. They slowed down Toronto's lightning quick rush in the neutral zone before it even hit the blue-line. That was huge.
A lot of standout efforts on offense tonight as well. Derek Stepan and Artem Anisimov are at the top of my list up front. Both created many scoring chances due to hard work and a relentless attitude. That is what you expect from your young players. Ryan Callahan, even though he did not score, was also great. He had a total of four shots on goal, but unfortunately none found the back of the net. Cally was also very strong on the penalty kill.
The Rangers are now 2-2-1 on the season and have begun to dig themselves out of an early hole. They will be back at it on Saturday when they visit the Boston Bruins and then will be back at Madison Square Garden on Sunday for a match against the New Jersey Devils. Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start in both.

“top teams in this league?” Really? Get back to me about that after the season. Didn’t know 4 games can knock someone from worst to the top

The Leafs are a top team in the league this season so far. Check the standings if you do not believe me. And I cannot predict the future unfortunately, but Toronto looks like a much better team this year than last. We’ll see.

i mean even the worst of teams have good 4 game stretches that is no way to judge a team, don’t just go by standings this early in the season, i assume if we beat NJD then you would be saying we just beat a top team in the east, not one of the worst, right? At least I’d hope so…..

the leafs turnaround started last season really. And this season through the first few games they ve been one of the better teams in the league. This will most likely not last, but the point is when we played them they were hot and one of the better teams
Don’t forget also that for most of last year Toronto got piss-poor goaltending, and that’s being kind to Toskala. Having a full season of Giguere alone should’ve improved them 10-12 points.

I think it will improve them more than that
even so, you can’t underestimate what their D-corps can do now that they have had time to gel

the leafs coming into this game were around tops in the league in points
and without a loss in regulation. Yeah that would qualify them as a “top team”. They so far have shown that they are MUCH better than the joke of a team that skated last yr. Good, solid road win against a top team tonight, lets hope they keep it rolling

Look at the names... and the GM
This team has amassed a very nice lineup and it’s led by one of the best GM’s in the league. I don’t think they are cup contenders but I do think they should be considered among the most improved. Add in the fact that they have beat what you may consider “the best in the league” and are at the tops in the league in points and I would also consider them one of the best in the league… for now.
wow
the Leafs are a good team man
seriously look at their GM goalie and lineup
their defensemen might be the best 3 lines in the NHL

Going to Boston to see the Rangers play Saturday. What do you think? Wearing a Leetch Rangers jersey is better than wearing a Lundqvist or Richter no?

In my opinion its too early to draw conclusions like that. One game is not enough. Half way through the season and I think we can grade Biron, but for now its too early
Yea, it is too early...
but you gotta admit we would have lost that game with Chad between the pipes. That outing already gives the club, Hank, the fans and Torts reason to take a deep sigh of relief.
Over the years, we have consistently had career minor league goaltenders backing up Hank (Weeks, Vally, Johnson). Biron has been a #1 goalie for most of his career. As long as he buys into being the #2 guy over the next 2 years, he is going to provide very reliable goaltending that the Rangers haven’t seen in a long time.
Weeks wasn’t a career minor leaguer. He was the starter for the ’canes.

Sauer
what a difference sauer made with the defense tonight. They were skating around with a lot more confidence out there, looked like a whole different defense from the last game. No more eminger please.
thank you
you said it first but if i had one thought regarding the near future, it’s Torts KEEP these defensive pairings and no more Eminger, he was a total liability and Sauer plays a solid, unflashy game and makes very few mistakes and a couple real great plays tonight, including a poke check they showed on replay. Biron is the story, but this is the D.
Also, MDZ was really great tonight.
He's a great compliment to Gilroy too
Sauer stays back and plays D, and Gilroy can work the puck up the ice – his stregenth

Hear, hear - Rozi was rock solid tonite. MDZ exceptional on the defensive end. That pair likewise top notch!

Was going to make this point myself...
That was the best defensive pairs I’ve seen to date… I hope I feel this way Monday morning, and if I do I don’t want to see Eminger again.
Yeah the absence of Eminger made a world of difference

You know that hockey fights aren’t sumo wresting right? Take downs mean nothing Win Boogy94.
Great game Biron and that was what hank needed to do last week at the Garden
I COMPLETELY SECOND THAT FIRST STATEMENT
Boogey looked like he was fighting a 5-year old, yanking him around. I thought he was going to send him to his room.

We’re a pretty bad faceoff team thus far. It’s a concern, but I’m not specifically worried about Versteeg going 4 for 4, no.

Product of youth.
Young players are generally bad at faceoffs. When your centers are 20 (Stepan) and 22 (Anisimov), you’re bound to struggle. Boyle’s just not good, and Dubinsky has struggled early on when given the opportunity.

Was Boyle this bad on FO's last year?
Even Drury, however, was barely over 50% on FO’s last year…

Boyle was easily worst last year, only won ~39%

Torts had EC taking the defensive zone faceoffs for AA in the third period. Then jumping off the ice when he could and AA coming on.

Prust was everywhere tonight, great game for him.
by Blueshirt in Paris on Oct 22, 2010 6:37 AM EDT reply actions
I absolutely agree with you. He misses playing next to a playmaker like Anisimov; otherwise, we might see Prust’s name on the score sheet like we did at the end of last year. Prust proved that he could be an agitator, a reliable PK, and score the occasionally goal needed from your 4th line.
Concur - Prust was everywhere.
I wonder about his hands, however. His positioning is clearly A+…but can he finish, pass?

I know Eminger was not playing well but can we stop overreacting and acting like he was the main reason why the rangers were losing. Also, Gilroy and Sauer played all of 10 minutes tonight, so lets not overreact to how great they were.
The biggest thing for me tonight was seeing MDZ in the PK. That’s a new role for him an he performed well.
by NTB on Oct 22, 2010 8:51 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I agree not to get over-excited
but there is no doubt that I am a lot more comfortable watching an eminger-less defense back there. He will be getting more opportunities to prove himself, trust me guys he will, but for right now (with the small sample size we have — stop smiling George you didn’t coin that phrase!) things look much better without him.

Eminger’s certainly not the reason they lost, but he nearly as certainly wasn’t contributing to winning (or not losing as it were). For that matter, I don’t know that Gilroy is either, but I’m fairly certain Sauer is. He’s been solid in all 3 games thus far.
MDZ’s growing. He got time on a 5 on 3 against Toronto the last time, and did well then as well. Pleasantly surprising.

Could it be
That compared to most of the other Rangers D, that MDZ is a better skater. Especially this year. He’s got a little more pep in his first few steps after getting stronger over the off-season. On a 5 on 3 being able to cover as much as ice as possible is probably more important than being able to lay someone out with a big hit. Eminger seemed to want to run at players more often which tends to take a player out of position.

Their biggest problem the last few games was taking bad penalties in the 3rd.
They did it again last night, but had the wherewithal to stop the momentum.
That penalty against Prust in the third was a joke! I can’t believe the refs called that. It was SO obvious Versteeg was holding Prust’s stick.

so can we put Eminger out of his misery and cut him already?
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
credit to rosi
rosi made a great pass to arty for the 2nd goal, of course everyone will still boo him when he touches the puck
See comments up above: Rozi = :)
That pass was brilliant. Even the announcers were surprised by it, indicating ‘he threw it on net.’ Rubbish; replays show a clear, deliberate intent to place it where it was. Equally as good finish from that pass.
One game does not a resurgence make. Still, I strongly recall how good a confident Rozi was 3 years ago (before the contract-O-doom followed). Moreover, Rozi has been very consistent on the defensive end for the season’s start.
"...also I'll brush my teeth and remember to turn off the stars at night and put the hyena out." ERNEST HEMINGWAY
how much of the rosi hating is ‘just trying to be a funny loudmouth" at the games? I was there vs colorado and whenever he touched the puck it was ’’you suuuuuuuuck". And yes that’s a little bit funny, but cmon
His blunders
Tend to be of the highly visible variety. Pucks bouncing over his stick at the point and not shooting on the power play. Add the fact that he’s not fast, doesn’t really hit that much and he’s an easy target. He doesn’t get enough credit for games like last night, but there’s a lot of times it’s hard to defend some of the plays he makes or doesn’t make.

Callahan
How good is this guy. I have to disagree with Nick saying the Rangers best fowards were AA and Stepan. They played very well as did most of the team but Cally was clearly the best player on the ice last night. This guy is an amazing player who does everything! Hitting, forechecking, backchecking, PP, PK, blocking shots hustling his ass off EVERY shift. The guy was a one man wrecking crew against the Leafs and deserved the first star of the game.

Stat Geeks?
He just needs to learn how to finish better. I’d like to see the stats for scoring chances vs goals on him.
Well he hasn’t scored a goal yet, so he’s at 0%.
If you mean just when Callahan is out there, that’s easy enough. The goal is to post the chances tonight, I’ll include it in the notes.

I like Sauer over Emingar as well.
If the team plays at the battle level they played last night, consistently and for the entire game, they will do alright. It will be hard to keep up that level consistently, especially when we play 3 games over 4 nights. If they do learn to do this, and then Gabby comes back and is effective, they should make the playoffs in the 5-6 spot. Drury’s ability to win faceoffs could be a big help late in these games.
I don’t know if Torts can get this battle level out of the players every night. I’m not sure that old "Captain Clutch" is the right guy to motivate them either. Did Drury travel with the team to Tornoto?
Whether it’s Drury or Callahan or somebody else, I agree that at least one player needs to be vocal in the locker room before every game about getting the team in this mindset. You can’t have these games once a month, the players mouthing that this needs to be the effort every night, and then go back to inconsistency.
I hate the Islanders, but I admire their approach to the game right now, and if the Rangers could duplicate that nightly effort, they’d be in much better shape.
MDZ
Had a great defensive game as well. It sucks that when he plays great D, he isn’t very noticeable up front.
something for Hank to improve on
not taking anything away from hank because he is the reason for most of the rangers wins the last few seasons but Biron was great handling the puck last night. If Hank could learn to handle the puck like that it would add to his game.If you have a puck clearing goalie teams cant start a forcheck they wont even dump it in.How many time have we watch the rangers dump in a puck and watch the goalie clear it out….Make teams carry it over the blue line…stand them up …….take the puck pass it up ice…….Maybe im crazy MAYBE IM NOT………………………… BE HONEST
Nice Observation, and I Totally Agree
Biron handled the puck beeeeeautifully, better than the King does.
I dunno, though. You still could be crazy.
T
great game
Biron was great, thats a huge plus going forward
Stepan just makes plays, thats what he does, straight playmaker
Callahan man played a great game, i know he didnt score a goal and it always seems he does everything right and just doest get a goal, poor guy but man he did everything for us
if I had to choose between keepin Callahan or Dubinsky, I would keep Callahan thats just me idk if they will have to choose but who knows
is it me or did the Leafs just looked panicked and deer in headlights at the end of the game?
they just look flustured and confused when they pulled the goalie towards the end
idk if thats coaching or whatever but I saw some sloppy play from them
the worst play for me had to be they had puck possession pulled the goalie and then I saw the guy just shoot the puck down the other end for icing, on purpose
then the Leafs had to bring back their goalie and by that point the game was over
