Rangers Recap: Canes Get Late Goal to Beat Rangers 4-3

NEW YORK - OCTOBER 29: Henrik Lundqvist #30 of the New York Rangers sits on the ice after allowing Erik Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes to score the game-winning goal in the third period on October 29 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City New York. The Hurricanes defeated the Rangers 4- 3. (Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty Images)

In a game dominated by goaltending, a questionable late penalty led to the game winning goal and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Rangers 4-3 at Madison Square Garden.

Couple of quick thoughts from me:

  • I liked what I saw from Grachev, took the body well, and was in place for scoring chances when he should have been.
  • If you like goaltending, this was the game for you. Cam Ward and Henrik Lundqvist were both amazing in this game.
  • Curious move near the end of the game when Torts put Artem Anisimov out there with Ruslan Fedetenko and I believe Frolov. Just seemed like an odd time to juggle the lines, and break up what is by far their best line.
  • Boyle's hooking penalty late in third was questionable at best.
  • If you listened to our "Post Game Show" I sincerely apologize for the technical difficulties, BTR is getting ridiculous.

• I thought the Rangers carried the play for the majority of the game.
• The third period was mainly carried by the Canes
• Canes overall had better and easier scoring chances.
• The Rangers had to work a lot harder to get their chances.
• After the Rangers tied it up at 2 they let up big time on the next shift, which I thought was the back breaker in the game. At that point we were carrying the play practically the entire 2nd period and the goal happened so quickly on a bad give away. All the effort and pain put in to tie it up was instantly erased by a very lazy shift and sloppy play from the forwards all the way to the d.
• I might be in the minority, but I feel Staal has had a very poor start defensively in his end. Staal has looked very slow this year on some of these goals. For a shut down d I don’t think he has his A game going yet.
• The Rangers are a much better team then they were a year ago. We are grittier up front, our team scoring has been great.
• We have already lost 3 games (Car, Atl, and NYI) where we outplayed our opponents the majority of the game and through a combination of stupid penalties and unforced turnovers we have come away with no points.
• Our defense is still to soft to play against and no team fears taking a run at Lundquist. Lundquist gets hit at least twice a game. Someone should look into a stat where it calculates how many times a goalie is bumped a game. I think Lundquist has to lead the league every year. For a goalie that plays back in his net he absorbs a lot of contact.
• I’m very happy with the effort this team puts forth it just needs to start translating to wins.
• Even though the penalty at the end of the game was bogus and the non interference call was worse. The Rangers put themselves in a position to lose by playing sloppy d all night and ruined all the great effort we had putting pressure on the Canes in their zone. The team needs to focus more on those problems in our own end and stop blaming the refs. Remember if you win you have a right to complain, if you lose concentrate on the breakdowns that cause you to lose not one penalty call in a game you should have been winning.
We need a win against the Leafs to keep our players feeling positive about their effort in these games.

This is why I have been suggesting that we need to pull a trade for a TRUE shut-down defenseman. We can’t afford to lose Stall (although he’s been playing weak for a shut-down D), Rozi or Girardi. No way. That leaves MDZ, Gilroy and Eminger as shopable. Saur’s a keeper and we have kids on their way. But MDZ is the only one who will fetch any value for the type of back-liner that we need. Too bad we keep showcasing his horrible instincts because with each game his trade value goes down.

no way

absolutely not… how could we shop our pp quarterback who is but 19 years old? It’s not as if he’s a seasoned player, he’s only in his second year of the NHL and the year is barely 1/8th the way through…

You’d prefer to throw away our future for somebody who will help immediately when in 4 years dz will hav ebeen in the NHL for 6… Trading away guys like DZ is out of the question… It’s not like we are competing for the cup this year… We also need a legit number one center, but would you want to trade stepan and dubinsky?

He’s almost 4 years younger than me and I’m in Law School now… so he’s a kid to me… yet we should sell him for a shut down D-man who in 5 years will probably be in his 30’s and out of his prime… makes no sense

We cannot sell our youth… this season is going to be helter skelter… thats just how it’s going to be… accept it…

Voice I've said it once

and I’ll say it again. MDZ isn’t going anywhere. Guys like him don’t come around every day. McIlrath will be up soon, and he can fill that role. Why trade MDZ (a rare talent) for guys who are littered around the league?

Well said

I don’t understand the concept of shopping around MDZ, he would obviously return a great player but the Rangers are much closer to being a ‘youth movement’ than a team that is looking to pick up key parts that may just become UFA after this year. The talk should be about shipping off Gilroy and Sauer, not Del Zotto.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Oct 30, 2010 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Del Zotto is 20 years old, and as a 19 year old rookie last year he averaged 19 minutes a night and put up 40 points.

Yeah, he only has 3 points thus far, but he’s been running the power play all year and has been much better in the defensive zone. I just think it would be an egregious mistake to trade him.

The Gamble Here...

Is that he’s going to be the next Leetch or Zubov. Maybe. I hope I’m wrong and you all are right…obviously my take isn’t very popular. And yet, I just don’t see his style conforming to the direction of future cup winners. This isn’t the Bobby Orr or even Brian Leetch era. It is the Chris Pronger era. Its the era of AMAZINGLY talented forwards who will eat pinching D-men for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

And I’m all for keeping the youth movement going. We’re talking about one player not all the picks. We’re also talking about what vision we have for the type of blue line that can win us a cup five years down the line.

I agree with you though, he’s a really nice kid and lots of fun to watch.

by voice22 on Oct 30, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Regarding his age

He is as close to ‘invaluable’ to the team as I feel comfortable anyone his age being. He runs the powerplay, he gets top 4 minutes, and has shown some (not as much as we would like…) improvement in his own zone.

I understand your point about this being the age of a different breed of defenseman, but I would suggest this is the age of the Duncan Keith/Drew Doughty-esque defenders. Players who can do a little bit of everything, are great skaters, and very responsible in their own end. Neither Doughty or Keith is tremendously ‘big’ (Keith: 6’1", 217 lbs, Doughty: 6’0", 211 lbs) but they use their size and strength well. They are players that are immensely talented but don’t shy away from the physical game. Del Zotto is about ten pounds lighter than Doughty and Keith but he is still young, I don’t see him ever becoming anywhere as talented or efficient in his own zone as Keith or Doughty but he could be something special.

Another point I’d like to raise is that the best defenders have a great wing man that compliments their game extraordinarily well- Keith has Seabrook, Doughty has Greene. In these cases the ‘compliment’ player is a more defensive-minded player that stays at home, blocks shots, and does all those things that go uncelebrated. Leetch and Beukeboom comes to mind as a decent parallel… but I think you have a point about a purely offensive defenseman not being ideal for a Stanley Cup contender. Strong example being Mike Green, if they could give him a truly competent compliment player… that might be something. Maybe Del Zotto can develop into a handsome piece to a great pair in the future, we might have some of those pieces in the organization right now.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Oct 30, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear you…If we are going to keep MDZ, we need to build around him. Everyone on the ice has be prepared to fall back and cover the blue line and slot.

I do notice that his physical game is a lot more consistent but it takes a back seat to his positioning.

Anyway, like I said, this will all depend on how he develops and what he will look like in a couple of years. Also, like I said, I do truly hope that I’m wrong and will be the first to take my hat off and eat crow if I am.

Voice has no reason

You already want to give up on Michael Del Zotto when he is the QB on the Power Play? It’s the start of his second season and you are waiving the white flag to give up. Del Zotto will be fine. His defense will improve and he is very valueable to the Rangers.

You want to quit on him now, go ahead and if the Rangers do listen to you and MDZ gets traded somewhere else, he will flourish and all of us would be complaining again about trading young talented players again for crap. I’ll just say Look at Voice22, he wanted MDZ gone.

your insane if you want to trade Del Zotto, yeah he isn’t that great defensively although he’s getting better. But he starts the break out fantastically, runs the PP great, and is all in all an unbelievable player. It would take no time for anyone to jump on him if he was rumored to be shopped. Every Team in the league would want him.

Someone should look into a stat where it calculates how many times a goalie is bumped a game. I think Lundquist has to lead the league every year. For a goalie that plays back in his net he absorbs a lot of contact.

Having watched every minute thus far and sometimes twice…this isn’t happening as frequently as one might think. It seems like a lot because we remember it every time we do, but it’s not happening more than 2-3 times a game (which of course, is 2-3 times too many.)

No matter what you try, the goalie is always going to get bumped 2 to 3 times a game. Especially when every coach preaches going hard to the net and D-men love pushing those forward into the goalie. This is why those using the Boogaard will stop Hank-bashing was completely misguided.

by NTB on Oct 30, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Great game by Henrik. I hate seeing him giving up a lot of goals considering the effort he put in. It should have been a 7 or 8 goal game from the Canes. Same for Ward-he was brilliant.

The goals against.
The skate deflection was bad luck, though I’d rather see Rosi stay in front of the net on that one. If the Canes guy behind the net shoots out to Henrik’s left, Rosi wouldn’t be able to reach him in time, or cover the front. But we’ll say luck/fluke
The power play goal-all 4 penalty killers were off to 1 side and nobody picked up the breaking back-door guy. Somebody’s gotta either cover that passing lane or pick the guy up. Henrik made a great 1st save, but the guy had an easy rebound.
The Staal/Rosi oops on the Skinner breakaway…keystone cops type of shit. Just clear the damn puck away from the zone, don’t fumble around with it.
The Cole 4th goal. On that play, Staal CANNOT chase that guy behind the goal line and towards the corner. That is damn near rule#1 of penalty killing-don’t chase a guy who isn’t in a dangerous scoring position, cuz he will pass it to the spot you just vacated to chase him.

Officiating wasn’t great, but it’s not to blame for this loss.

And, as with every team last year, the Canes took liberties running through the crease and bumping Henrik numerous times. That’s when I’d condone a good roughing penalty-you want to run Hank? You’re gonna get smashed in the face. It was nothing malicious, but if Hank gets hurt because we won’t keep people away from the net…somebody should get their ass deported to Siberia.

Cally-AA-Dubi. Can’t say much more about what they’re doing. Terrific working line-can score, can forecheck, can play shutdown. Really impressive. Dubi playing himself onto the all-star team at his scoring pace.

Rest of the team? Fedotenko (gonna start calling him K-Fed soon), where have you gone? Stepan has been invisible since Buffalo.

Frolov. Have fun in the KHL next season. And I don’t want to hear any crapola about him missing Gaborik or whoever-he’s supposed to be here to provide secondary scoring, not mooch points off of Gaborik.

Gilroy looked good….when the hell is Sauer going to replace Eminger?

Girardi by far our best D-man this season. Not even close.

Staal…we currently have 2.4 (Rosi gets a .4) competent D-men on this team…we need you shutting them down, not giving them directions to Lundqvist’s goal-crease.

Rosi…why do awful things happen when you touch the puck?

by Caerid112 on Oct 29, 2010 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

Frolov

I thought he would be a good fit for our team, but so far he has been invisible. Its not just putting the puck in the net, he’s not setting anyone up either. Through an entire game you barely hear his name.

Not Bad...

“The Cole 4th goal. On that play, Staal CANNOT chase that guy behind the goal line and towards the corner. That is damn near rule#1 of penalty killing-don’t chase a guy who isn’t in a dangerous scoring position, cuz he will pass it to the spot you just vacated to chase him.”

So true, I was shaking my head and saying “no!” before the goal was even scored. You can’t do that. Also, how many times have I watched these guys getting deeked to the outside and giving up the inside lane…like you said, along with outlet passing lanes these are just golden f’n rules you can’t break in the NHL or you end up on national highlight reels.

Aside from Torts, whose in charge of coaching our D?

Agree with the note on Girardi brother.

by voice22 on Oct 30, 2010 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup, I can’t argue. Girardi’s been #1.

As much as a I preach about the shot rates and scoring chances these days (where Staal does still have the edge), the mistakes by Staal have been much worse and led to goals fairly frequently. Girardi’s still been on ice for more goals, but they have more often been a product of his defense partner than his own play.

This frustrates the hell out of me. For some reason, I can’t get my head around why the hell Eminger is playing. Sauer is MUCH better. Eminger’s blatant interference penalty leads to a power play leads to trailing the game 1-0.
I thought the team looked out of sync and though we had good forecheck there was lot of sloppy, tentative play.
I also thought Grachev looked totally out of his depth.

yeah that was odd, but cant blame the man for trying some fresh looks

Staal I mean I like the guy but its like on a consistent basis i see him make some stupid play that leads to a goal, and he is supposed to be this shutdown d-man
I will give Ginger Staal a pass, very important player very young very talented but I just see Ginger Bread boy make some errand plays that lead to goals
I wish we could clear the puck sometimes and give Henrik some help
we always have these games where we have a great forecheck keep the puck in their zone and just dont score
to me thats the most frustrating part

I saw a lot of good things in this game.

I liked the Stepan, Frolov and EC line. Frolov and Stepan looked way better than in the last couple of games. Another positive was that the Rangers finally had more than just one PP line creating chances. Girardi and Staal looked good together on the blue line and it resulted in a goal.

I can’t say too much about Grachev. I thought he played well except for the one time he lost the puck that led to a two on one. I hope they keep him for a bit and give him some more ice time.

On the negative side, the Rangers made too many mistakes, again. Staal is too inconsistent at the moment. He has some great plays but then there are those little mistakes in every game. Another problem is that they don’t work hard enough in front of the net to deny rebound shots. It was crazy how many times the Canes got two or more rebounds. And they need to stop these interference penalties. Last game MDZ this time Eminger.

Overall I think the team looks much better than last season.

Lundqvist gave up yet another goal in the last ten minutes of a tie game….does anybody else think he’s got a problem with this? I don’t have the time this morning to go back and check last year’s boxscores, but the man cannot stop giving up big goals in the third period. I’d also love to know where he stacks up against the rest of the league in this category, if it’s available (calling George E. Ays?)

Don’t get me wrong, I love Hank….he’s worked to improve his glove hand, now someone’s gotta straighten out his head. Every time he gives up a goal he reacts as if he’s just lost a limb.

Well No, Hank had a shaky first couple games but has been excellent since. The goals he gave up were point blank after making the original save. Skinner scored on that break in and made a nice move but the Cole goal was not his fault. When the other team has all day in front of the net, not goalie can be effective.

More like, the Rangers gave up yet another goal in the last ten minutes of a tie game. If he hadn’t been standing on his head it wouldn’t have even been a tie game in the last ten minutes of play,

by voice22 on Oct 30, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I am tired of hearing that defense of Lundqvist. For a guy who wins a lot of games it seems that many slip through his fingers late. Truly great goalies cannot continually cough up leads late in games….I think back to guys like Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy, or Mike Richter. Give them a one-goal lead in the third period and the game was almost in the bag.

I know that the Rangers do not have a good defense, that they don’t clear the crease, etc. But I’d like to see Hank have three straight starts without giving up a third-period goal.

I’ll agree Lundqvist has given up some bad goals late in the game in past years but there’s no way you can fault him for last nights goal. He made an unbelievable save on Cole to begin with going post to post but there’s absolutely nothing he could have done with the rebound. The goaltending was amazing last night and it could have easily been a 8-7 game.

It’s a chore and a half to dig through old boxscores, and assuredly no one’s currently tracking it.

If we’re defining ‘big’ goal as

yet another goal in the last ten minutes of a tie game

This would be the second time this year (both PP goals), FWIW

I’ll certainly monitor it this year, I’m importing all that information anyway.

I think it might be a better project to monitor his save% in those situations, however. Sure, it sucks that he’s allowed 2 already in that situation, but if he’s stopped, say, 50 shots (exaggeration for effect, no clue what the number is), then it wouldn’t make sense to lean on Hank for that problem.

What you don’t realize, tommy, is that outside of Staal and Girardi, who else do we have defensively responsible enough on the back end to place on the PK? For now, we need Rozsival there.

Rozy also has a hell of a shot when he elects to use it, though I’m not fond of his slapshot so much, but his wrist shot is pretty nice. After MDZ/Gilroy/Staal, who else are you gonna put on the PP? Again, for now, Rozsival fills a void.

He’s seeing first-pairing minutes, and outside of Staal and maybe Girardi, we have nobody else to fill that role without consequences. Until someone better shows up, you won’t get your wish.
