Rangers Recap: King Henrik Stuns Leafs with 2-0 Shutout

The Rangers jumped right back on the winning track with a 2-0 defeat of the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight, after dropping two straight this past week to Atlanta and Carolina. This win gives New York their tenth and eleventh points in the standings, placing them at seventh in the Eastern Conference for the time being. A nice way to finish off the first month of the season, because they have a tough schedule coming up in November.

The first period opened with Brandon Prust, despite the bruised eye, dropping the gloves with Mike Komisarek. It was a good fight until Komisarek decided to use a wrestling move to take down Prust and then proceed to throw two cheap shots once they both fell to the ice. Prust would later pay the Leafs back by leading Brian Boyle into the offensive zone with a light touch pass, which Boyle took to the net and roofed over the shoulder of J-S Giguere to give the Blueshirts a 1-0 lead. The speed displayed by Boyle on that play was incredible, so fast that Giguere did not even have time to get over to the post before the shot was taken.

The second period was all defense and all Henrik Lundqvist.  Hank made 18 saves in the period, but what made the difference was the fact that he did not have to deal with many rebounds. His defensemen, for a change, cleared the crease of all loose pucks and all opposing players. Ryan Callahan then scored an insurance goal on a penalty shot, which he was awarded upon being tripped on a breakaway. No player on the team deserved a penalty shot opportunity more than Callahan, because he was again working hard all night. That goal would be his fourth of the season and put the Rangers up 2-0 heading into the second intermission.

King Henrik continued his dominance in the third period, when the Leafs tried hard to make a comeback. The Rangers did a great job of trapping Toronto in the neutral zone and when they did get through to the offensive zone, Henrik had an answer for every shot he faced. Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky were great in the final minutes of the third, clearing the zone everytime Toronto tried entering it.

Star-divide

Lundqvist captured his first shutout of the season tonight, and the 25th of his marvelous career. That puts Lundqvist ahead of my personal all-time favorite Ranger, Mike Richter, on the list of career shutouts as a Blueshirt. It is not easy for a goaltender to stand on his head one night, and then have to go and do the same thing just 24 hours later. That is what Hank did at the Air Canada Centre this evening, so he deserves a lot of credit for his effort.

Ryan Callahan continues to play spectacular hockey and again was a major leader on the ice tonight. Whether it was penalty killing, forechecking or just hitting, Ryan did it all and was deservedly awarded a penalty shot goal, which gives him goals in four straight games. Not to mention he is also the team's leading scorer at the moment.

Brandon Prust and Brian Boyle also stood out to me in this tilt. First of all, Prust going after Komisarek with an injured eye speaks volumes of the heart and soul this guy plays with on a nightly basis. Selfishly, not many players would do that, especially when they are going up against someone much larger and stronger than them. But that doesn't matter to Prust. He is all about giving himself up for the club.

Brian Boyle, who has also played a physical role this season, showed his offensive side yet again.  His beautiful backhander puts him at four goals on the season (ten games), which was his season total in 71 games played in 2009-10. Boyle has transformed right before our eyes, and with key guys out with injuries on offense, Boyle's secondary scoring has been a huge help.

The entire defense played an all-around better game than they did against Carolina on Friday. Like I said above, Lundqvist did not have to deal with very many rebounds thanks to the play in front of him. Also, they limited the odd-man rushes against, which wasn't the case earlier in the week versus the Thrashers and Hurricanes.

New York will have Sunday off, but are back in action on Monday when they host the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks at Madison Square Garden. That will be the beginning to a very difficult schedule in the month of November, but a win would be a sure confidence booster.

Interseting refereeing

I know its hockey night in Canada but the calls seemed very slanted in Toronto’s favor. aA lot of interference, late hits against the NYR not being called. Was good to get the win going against the house:)

Who is that weirdo that wears those crazy suits on hgockey night in canada, I know he went off on a rant about Avery one time? I wish that guy would leave the show.

don cherry is a canadian legend and a very interesting fella. when i lived up in toronto he made my saturday night shifts much happier. he’s a good guy. and he i-s the show.

don cherry is an ass, canadian homer for sure, doesn’t give any credit to anyone other than canadians.

by CrazyRangerFan on Oct 31, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

true he’s pro canadian, but i recall alot of credit given by him to american born players, including ryan callahan and chris drury. as most hockey figures should do, cherry is completely obsessed with the development of local youth hockey, and he should be applauded for that rather than ridiculed.

by #17ToTheRafters on Oct 31, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He does deserve credit for that, But for me he looks at the nationality of a player way too much, I recall him talking about a player last night and said “now heres a great canadian born kid…” Like who gives a crap where he’s from, guaranteed if the player was Russian or European he wouldn’t have even talked about him. I dont stuff like that annoys me.

by CrazyRangerFan on Oct 31, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you there...

It just sounds odd in this day and age. I mean, it’d be like if Tim McCarver was talking about Evan Longoria saying “Now here’s a great American-born kid.” I love watching the show though, it looks like they’re using 1970’s technology. I think it was Ray Ferraro who when his team’s plane crossed the Canadian border said “Alright boys, just crossed into Canada. Turn your watch back 15 years.”

by NastyNate82 on Oct 31, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

turn you watch back 15 years

and keep your head up, or Canada will win another gold medal against us. If we ever do manage to win a gold in the future we will make 20 movies about it and proclaim how awesome we are at everything except managing out money. Don’t worry, you only have 10 X the population and we still field half your teams.. Good old Canadain boys eh?! You guys are so lucky to have us as neighbours.

lol is right

I just think he is a bit of a moron, honestly I would not want him on the leafs. I am a crazy nhl fan, and my fav team is the leafs. There are guys I don’t want on my team either, Phaneauf being the highest on the list then Grabovski. There are some guys who just bring a team down with their seflishness. I think Avery is one of those guys. I wouldn’t trade a bag of pucks for him..

by Jesse Matthew on Nov 1, 2010 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Turtles?

Stats from last season show Avery had 7 fighting major (same as Scott Hartnell, 2 behind Boogard, Eager and Clarkson). Compared to the other “pests”, or “agitators” (depending on which team you root for, Darcy Tucker had 3 and Ruutu fought ONCE! So I think it’s fair to say that, Avery IS willing to drop the gloves; but that’s not why he’s on the team. He’s there to stir the pot. Judging by his play below the hash marks the last two games, I think he’s capable of bringing even more. Granted, last season I wasn’t all that high on keeping Avery – it appeared that the NHL officiating was making him more of a liability than he was worth, it appears this season he’s found his nitch and the NHL is letting him play. Would I hate Avery if he were playing for another team? Sure, but the same would have been said for Ulf Sammuelson and Esa Tikkanen.

I think

he will be a liability again this year, give him time.

You guys are lucky to have such a good goalie! I just this page just to let you all know I know hate Lundquvist with a passion.

Hey, at least we get to play each other a few more times this year and settle the score! Goodluck!

ps

I wish I had the time and the drive to make a vid of clip where avery fakes dropping the gloves to sucker a guy in and then skates away.. Your memory must be short old fella.

And was it him or Chris Neil (Ottawa for you Yanks) that was dancing in front of Brodeur last season? I can’t remember, joke move anyway.
They look like the same guy to me these days..

great win

and great coaching by Torts, he is really good at using his timeout in a key situation
Callahan one of my favorite players all time Rangers, is breaking out, Im loving it because he goes so hard man
only 190 pounds and goes so hard against guys twice his size
Ryan Callahan congrats on having a breakout year, please be a career Ranger
Brian Boyle, I really didnt want him back this season I admit
but this guy is fastly becoming one of my favorite players. he has worked so hard on his game it shows and being physical now every play following it thru
that goal was f’n butter, seriously Boyle is a big time player for us now
Brandon Prust I love your game and heart, guy’s eye is almost swollen shut wears a visor one game
tonight he stuck up for his guys and executed a old school move by coming out of the box perfectly
another valuable Ranger, no matter what his stats are at the end of the season he is a keeper longterm

+1 Cali great again along with Prust. I like what Grachev did for the 2nd straight game. Staal played a lot better, Boyle showing why every player should train with a figure skater during the offseason.

Way too many scoring chances for the second straight night overall, but a win is a win.

and was that move on the penalty shot sweet or what?

by #17ToTheRafters on Oct 31, 2010 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

Brian Boyle

is a beast on the puck and an ever-developing hockey player. I know Smurf said the other day that Boyle could be a perennial 10-12 goal guy (like Betsy but with more offense), which I think is an accurate assessment of his skill set. But why couldn’t he be a 20 goal guy? I realize that’s a lofty goal for someone who has not had a ton of offense in their game, but it’s doable.

I had the privilege of coaching (I use the term coaching loosely) at Northeastern University for 2 seasons (one season under Bruce Crowder and the other under Greg Cronin), so I got to see a lot of Boyle and his BC Eagles. People forget that Boyle was a defenseman for a long time because of his size and strength. That’s where he gets his defensive skill from. He switched to center and was able to dominate in the NCAA because of his sheer size and power. He would park in front of the net and he was unmovable. Nate Gerbe (Sabres) and Brock Bradford (5’6" and 5’8" respectively) played on Boyle’s wings. The line was unstoppable. Boyle captained BC to 2 straight national championship games, only to lose them both (Gerbe took over the captaincy after Boyle graduated and won). Boyle’s hands and skating ability were always an issue at BC, but he had such raw talent and strength that he was able to dominate at that level. The LA Kings drafted him knowing he would be a project, and eventually gave up on him. Mistake. Anyone that Jerry York (head coach of BC Men’s Ice Hockey since 1787….don’t quote me on that date) thinks is worthy to play for the team, let alone be the captain, is going to make a splash wherever he lands.

Boyle will almost undoubtedly never score 35-40 goals or even be an all-star. But there is absolutely no reason he can’t be a solid 2nd or 3rd line center for years to come, whether it be on the Rangers or somewhere else. He will always be a work in progress. But the coaches and trainers that put in the time and effort to shape his skills will benefit greatly in the long run.

Thank you

Fir the informative information and background on Brian Boyle. The many reason s why this is so great. This might turn out to be a hidden gem of a trade by Glen Sather. Still do not like the work he has done (see demoting Tim Kennedy over Todd White).

I agree to keep Boyle around and work with him and the benefit will pay off as it already has the first 11 games of the season.

good post on Boyle

I agree why cant he be a 20 goal guy? guy obviously has skills and is growing into his skill set
love that he is a bigger body too
good personality, dressed up as Shrek! lol
but also a good college player in his day
my only worry is when Drury comes back, who gets demoted?
AA Boyle Stepan Drury are my centers, but idk what the Rangers will do

Reason we won the game

He got a little help from a post and Callahan, AA, and Dubinsky really flew tonight. Great game. Big win, avoiding a big losing streak and got Hank some confidence. So many good things to take away from the game that I don’t want to even think about the bad… not just yet anyway.

In Hank we trust.

Since I’ve been burning Eminger alive here it’s only fair that I give him props for his team high 5 blocked shots. (Of course he committed his compulsory blatant interference penalty as well but our penalty kill was outstanding tonight.)

by Joe1969 on Oct 31, 2010 3:17 AM EDT reply actions

agree but

can someone tell me why Sauer is not in the line up over this guy. Second, do you think Eminger will be gone some point this season?

by gene4240 on Oct 31, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Meh

I would like to see Mike Sauer in the lineup over Eminger any and everynight, Eminger seems to bring a more physical game than Sauer does. But he also seems to be more prone to being out of position. He plays a little recklessly and has gone for some unnecessary big hits that really had me shaking my head (like the interference penalty last night). The Rangers would be hard-pressed to find a way to ‘get rid’ of Eminger, he is a journeyman, he could be part of a package trade… but he is a hard guy to move given his skill set and his low ceiling.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Oct 31, 2010 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Emminger

Has been pretty solid for 2 games in a row. Yes, he sometimes flies out of position to make the big hit, but he has been recovering well from the lapses. He clears out the front of the net stronger than any of the other 6 D we carry. This was the biggest weakness from our D last year and it is greatly improved this year. While Sauer has played some solid D too, I don’t think Torts is way off base here. Having some toughness on the blueline is a really good thing for this team.

by Blueshirts Rock on Oct 31, 2010 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

voice22 mentioned that Sauer may be injured, hence Eminger. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the one knock on Sauer is he’s always getting hurt.

The Leafs are #1 (The Leafs lead the NHL in revenues and net profits)

The Leafs lead the NHL in revenues and net profits in the five consecutive seasons that they missed the playoffs (i.e. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/31/hockey-values-09_NHL-Team-Valuations_Rank.html). They will very likely be the first NHL team to net one million dollars net profit per game once the financial results for the 2009-2010 season are released. The Leafs are very good for the NHL since they ensure that the league is profitable. The Leafs fan base is the largest of any NHL team, their is no competitor within the large geographic area of Toronto (unlike Los Angeles and New York that have two hockey teams each in their city), hockey is the number one sport in Canada and the Air Canada Centre is always sold out regardless of whether the Leafs make the playoffs or not. The Leafs will once again lead the NHL in revenues and net profits and their large fan base will be cheering for their team to make the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

The Leafs are #1

A very insightful aricle, but I think that maybe you’re not from New York! LOL,LOL. Since you mention “geographical area”, I feel I have to point out that New York has three (3) teams—- the Rangers, the Devils and the Islanders. Of course there is only one REAL hockey club, an original six team, in the geographical area, The other two, the Devils and Islanders are merely “johnny come lately” teams, lagging far behind the Rangers in team loyalty in the greater New York area.
P.S. please don’t take this post as confrontational, it was meant to be humorous as well as informational.
Thanks

forget about the money for a sec dude, i really thought their last solid year was with young steen and ponikarovsky on mats’ last year. this rebuilding thing is still going to take 2 more years, much like with the rangers and president obama…

of course the leafs still need a real elite goalie, hope gustavsson turns into something more solid than he currently is.

and the ACC is only second to the garden to me in the whole “experience” catagory…truly an amazing building.

Best game of the season, so far.

The Rangers were gritty, tough, and had scoring threats coming at the Leafs from all over the ice.

I’m actually a little worried about Drury, Gaborik, and eventually Prospal coming back to disrupt what we have going right now.

by GaboriksGroin on Oct 31, 2010 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

I’m worried about Drury and maybe Prospal, but certainly not Gaborik coming back. Perhaps excluding the Cally-AA-Dubi line, he could replace any forward on any line and make it better..

Unfortunately I heard recently Torts called Eminger “our 5th defenseman” and Gilroy and Sauer are battling for the 6th spot. :S I don’t know what he is watching that he puts Eminger above Sauer and Gilroy but I’m guessing Eminger isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Regardless that sounds like bad news for Gilroy because Sauer is the much better defender.
