Rangers News: Rangers Waive Tim Kennedy and Todd White
Thanks to George on this, I just wanted to move it to a story for commenting purposes.
The answer to the forwards question has been answered today. This likely means Chris Drury will be ready sooner rather than later. Who will be 13th forward when Drury returns still remains a mystery, for now.
[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 10/05/10 1:08 PM EDT Since we are all speculating on what this deal means, I have added a poll about Souray]

I’d like to ask all the fans who told me that White would be an impact player on this roster where they are and how they’re feelin right now. After the trade w/ ATL I said it was a clear salary dump move for both teams and White would not impact this team at all. Being right is fun.

Kinda sucks to see Kennedy go. Good young player. Feel bad for him, too. First he gets bought out by Buffalo, then waived by Rangers after a strong camp performance.
On the upside for him
The checks from the Rangers and Sabres still cleared, so he’ll be a rich AHL’er, and that seems to be mostly what Kennedy was concerned with.
That’s an interesting opinion, but from being his close friend I can tell you that that is the last thing he is concerned with. He was advised to go to arbitration and if it was open to him he would still be in his hometown with his fiance, friends and family.

Thanks Jessica...
this is a reminder to keep our discourse civil and respectful of who these people are as human beings.
People can get real cocky when they’re talking on the internet.
I was personally hoping to see him make the team because I enjoyed watching him skate last year and during the pre-season. He’s a good hockey player with a future in the NHL, for sure.

I don't think that I my comments lacked civility or respect
Hockey is a business, so much so that the players and owners need a constantly changing CBA to keep all the employees happy. The Sabres made it clear that they didn’t want to go to arbitration, and Kennedy went anyway. If any of us didn’t listen to our boss, we’d probably get fired too, just not with $330,000 in our pocket on the way out the door. Kennedy’s desire to be a Sabre wasn’t enough to overcome the teams (and all Buffalo sports teams) desire to stand their ground as a cheap, second rate franchise, and they used the tools both sides agreed on to mediate the situation. I just showed up a website, dedicated to one of the teams, and chose to voice my, factually based, opinion on the situation.
And like a lot of athletes, he got some bad advice from his AGENT.
Hopefully Kennedy will get a shot later this year for the Rangers.

To add further
Brooks is speculating that a trade for a defenseman is in the works.
One questions why we need more d-men in the system, but if it’s Eminger out, someone else in, it works for me.

I'll take Sauer as a 7th
With his history of injury problems it may be a great fit for him… still he really busted his ass in camp and has earned that 6th spot.
I am anxious to figure out if there will be a trade or waiver wire pick up for the 6th spot… I have one thing to say and one thing only- Anyone but Steve Eminger (and Sheldon Souray).
In Hank we trust.

Souray would be a great fit here
He’s comfortable moving the puck, cheap, and with he won’t still be tying up a spot when the young guys are ready. The injury history doesn’t bother me a bit. If something happens, we put him on the IR, cap free, and it opens up a spot for a kid.
I think they need a guy sound in his own end.
In an Ideal world, I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
I think we're getting back to "Safe is Death"
The lineup has gotten faster, Souray gives us a third puck moving d-man – one for each pair. I think the plan is to keep teams on their heals, and I like it.
except he has 2 years so now he is blocking a kid next year too

Next year is his last
His $2.7 can go to Hartford, without any fear of it popping back up to haunt us. $2.7 is nothing. Just ask Todd White.
Really though, if there’s a problem, I see it being injury related, in which case, he’ll retire or go on the IR. I think there’s not alot of risk in this for us.
maybe a dumb question: since kennedy at 550K wont make it to Hartford why not trade him for something?
twitter: @mleetch352
maybe they dont want to take on a salary, since we re close to the cap? or maybe there were no takers for Kennedy (although I would find that hard to believe)

I think the Rangers could have done a little better. Waiving White, we all saw that coming….but Kennedy with his low salary and youth has so much potential and low risk. Eminger and EC might have been significantly better choices. And I don’t care what anyone thinks, we don’t need EC as a center on this team and we won’t be successful because of him…I like him, but he’s a role player. Souray coming? I don’t know whether to be worried or not. Is Rozi going?

Souray
I can’t understand why the consensus is that Souray to the Rangers would be such a bad move. Souray brings the big bomb from the point that the Rangers so desperately need, he plays on the edge and would bring much need toughness to the D and you would never be getting a more motivated player after what happened with him at Edmonton. If you can get him in a even salary swap , say for Rozsival and a mid round draft pick it would be an absolutely brillaint move with no downside.
they would be claiming him not trading for him.

Souray Part 3
There is no chance that the 10 teams in front of the Rangers would pass on Souray at half the cap hit. It is a lock that one of those teams would pick him up. Despite his defensive shortcomings it is a no-brainer. Some people seem to have a very short memory, are they forgetting how bad that Rozsival is when he goes into those 20 game comas where he is always out of position, rarely makees contact with an opposing player and handles the puck like it is a grenade with the pin already pulled out ?.

It’s 9 teams in front of us, 1 being Edmonton, so 8.

Other teams would pass
Because Souray has been pretty clear about WHERE he wants to play. Unless he makes it clear he’s willing to go to any of the teams under us, I don’t think they put in the claim and have him unhappy for the next 2 years.
Souray
Is miserable in his own end and is injury prone, it would not be a trade it would most likely be a re-entry waiver where the Rangers take half of his salary cap hit (2.75 mill). He does have a cannon of a slapshot and would help the powerplay in a big way but he is also a gigantic gamble.
In Hank we trust.
souray: do not want
what’s the plan, to put him on the third pair?
staal-girardi, mdz-roszival, gilroy-sauer/eminger
who’s spot is he going to take if none of them are in the deal? doubt he’s going to be here as a 7th dman
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a

I’d rather have Souray than Eminger but he is more expensive… as you said Souray being here would mean the end of Eminger. Souray has a big upside offensively but the real question is if it is enough to justify his poor defensive play. Maybe he will work here, who knows? I am inclined to be pessimistic.

stats lie
Stats don’t always tell the real worth of player and in the case of Rozsival ever since Jagr left town he has been the INVISIBLE man.
That's not true at all
sure his point total has decreased but he does a lot of other things that help this team win, including having a veteran on the blue line who can mentor the youngins.

Gross on trading for/acquiring Souray
There’s plenty of speculation, and rightfully so, that the Rangers are looking to deal for a defenseman, specifically a left-shooting one. The one name that keeps coming up is exiled Oiler Sheldon Souray but there are no indications the Rangers are moving in that direction. Another name speculated on, Vancouver’s Shane O’Brien went to Nashville today.

not irrational
It has nothing to do with hate, which in my vocabulary is a very strong word. It has to do with performance. Rozsival’s performance can be consistently described as erratic at best. He refuses to shoot the puck from the point while on the PP which takes the guess work out of how other teams defense them. There is no physicality to his game and his positioning leaves alot ot be desired. He doesn’t make his defense partner a better player or any of the forwards for that metter. Souray can stand up for a teammate and win a fight he can bring the bomb from the point and score a big goal and he has an edge to his game that teh Rangers need. He is a difference maker, not a Superstar. And difference makers are what the Rangers have been lacking for much to long.

You wouldn’t describe Souray as erratic? And how does Souray make his D-man partner a better player when his own defense is below average? Just cause he can stand up for a teammate or shoot the puck hard doesn’t mean he’s a gamebreaker or Superstar.

George is that a stat somewhere for how many times Rozival has had the puck skip over his stick and out of the offensive zone thus nullifying any chance at establishing a cycle?

Not specifically, but when that happens, the team is not generating shots on offense, which means it’s reflected in his Corsi.

WHEN HEALTHY
Souray could be a steal… a lot of important words to keep an eye on though: ‘when’, ‘could’, ‘gamble’, ‘risk’, ‘Shakira’… nevermind that one, ‘defense’, ‘injury’.
He could be a steal but he could also be a big, big headache when the Rangers have just rid themselves of one.

Sather speaks
This from Gross:
"It’s not complicated," Sather said. "It just gives us some options in case somebody becomes available in the next day or two we can use. There’s always that possibility (of Kennedy being claimed). At the same time, you have to remember there are some kids in Hartford that can play here as well. It just gives us a little more versatility. I think they both played fine."

Pretty sure that lowers their waiver priority – they were speculated as being a team ahead of the Rangers who may be interested in Souray.
I don’t believe waiver priority resets like it does in the fantasysports world:
If more than one team puts in a claim on a player during the waiver period, then the team with the higher waiver priority’s claim is accepted.
If the claim is before November 1, waiver priority is based on the previous year’s standings, with the team with the worst record having first priority and the team with the best record having last priority.
If the claim is after November 1, waiver priority is based on the current year’s standings, defined as the lowest percentage of possible points.
I’m looking, but I don’t see anything about losing your spot. Edmonton has first dibs on everyone til the season starts.

So I had to write a rebuttal
To the prospects of picking up Souray to my friend, who although is as a diehard fan, sometimes fails to grasp the larger picture when it comes to choosing the on ice personnel.
My first issue with Souray is that the Oilers didn’t even let him attend camp, so perhaps he’s been working out on his own but that’s hardly going to put him into game shape. And for a player that’s missed about 50 games in 2 of the 3 years he’s been in EDM who’s almost 35, conditioning is a legitimate concern.
Furthermore, he’s on the books for another year after this. The Rangers don’t exactly have a lot of big contracts coming off the books after this year, I think Frolov has the highest cap hit out of anyone due to become a FA. Callahan and Dubinsky (if he’s still around, I think he will be but I can see him getting traded) will require another raise of at least a million each. Also, having Souray for an extra year would mean next year they’ll come into camp with 5 D on the NHL roster leaving room for only one of McDonagh, Valentenko and should he impress enough this year, Gilroy. Furthermore, I think having him man the point on PP will rob Del Zotto (and maybe Gilroy if they let him play that role this year) of gaining experience in that role and especially for Del Zotto they should be looking on expanding his role not decreasing it. The Rangers aren’t a Cup contender so they don’t need a guy that will set back some of their rebuilding process.

Not necessarily
An offensive defenseman, playing his off side, has a quite an advantage coming up ice. He’s on his forehand when he moves to the net, has a tighter angle for a shot, and doesn’t have a wait for a one-timer to cross his body on the D-D across the blueline.
It’s a bit easier to defend, because an attacker, coming from open ice is on his stick, and he can’t protect the puck with his body, but if you’re looking to push the puck around the zone quickly it can be a real asset.

I read what Sather said to Spector. Part of it sounded like Souray, but maybe something more. Maybe the Devils will have to dump one of there “big boys” To get under the cap & Isn’t Philly in trouble also? Here Sathers Quote:
Let’s say somebody’s got a cap problem, and they put a real good player on waivers tomorrow, then we have the room to take a real good player," Sather said. “Maybe in a different position — maybe you’re looking at a defenseman that could be there, somebody can’t afford to keep him. Then, by opening up this space, we would have room to absorb it. It’s just giving us a chance to do something like that, to exercise an option.”
I hope he's just saying that for the sake of saying that

We are not one of the first picks for waivers so I doubt if something good comes along we will get him
Something is in the works
There was no pressing cap situation that would force the rangers to waive todd white. the rangers could have kept him as spare as an insurance policy for vinny prospal in case his knee doesnt let him come back anytime soon. strange they would make this move now with no pressing cap need and two injuries up front.
kennedy being waived is even more curious
Rangers currently have 14 roster forwards, plus Drury and Prospal. They have til tomorrow (?) to set the 23 man rosters. If Drury is ready to go opening day, or at least by Monday vs NYI, waiving White now makes all the sense in the world, cap or no cap.
I’ve got nothing to explain Kennedy however.

I would be glad to have Souray… his salary through waivers would be 2.7 as a cap hit for the Rangers… He’s a high risk high reward player and would be an excellent veteran to help our rookies something we lack…
Technically, the only rookie on D is Sauer. Gilroy and MDZ are in their Sophmore. Girardi and Stall are old men. Souray was only successful because of his blast of a shot not because he was some outstanding mastermind of the power play.

we could have used him as part of a trade package
I can see Kennedy with Todd White (2.375M), Steve Eminger (1.125M), and a prospect being traded in a packaged deal to a team with a high cap hit. If they do this, we can get draft picks or some other prospects and increase our salary cap. If this does happen, what do u guys think we can get out of it?
Why would anyone do that?
We didn’t even give up that much for any of those guys. The only reason would be if you offered a serious prospect, and that doesn’t make any sense either.
He really was not necessary. He’s a small 24 year old with 26 career points. At a similar age, the much beloved EC had about double that. Although he showed some skills in preseason, he did not beat out any of the players currently on the active roster, including players like Feds or Boyle. And there is no reason to think he would necessarily win a spot next year. Even if Feds and Prospal are gone and lets say Frolov leaves and we don’t sign a replacement, that leaves 3 openings on the forward line (including two scratches). And we’ll have Grachev, Zuccarello and Krieder competing for those spots.
It would have been nice to keep him as cheap depth, But even there, if they need an injury replacement, Grachev, Zuccarello or Weise may do just as well.
So summing it up –
Sather might spend 2.7mm
on an oft-injured (by his own hand, mind you)
irresponsible in his own end (that whole ‘minus’ on the the plus/minus thing)
“project” (we all know how the majority of those work out, eh?)
who’s completely out of shape (wasn’t permitted to attend EDM training camp)
but will light up the ESPN highlights (the few times they do anything with hockey) with a couple of big bit hits.
Oh – and who statistically is probably worse than Waive (D)Redden…..
Fantastic – what a deal !!! Where do I sign???
/sarcasm
It's a lock - we gotta get him!
Flowing locks, jean-only topless posters, jewelry. If he’s even close to as good as the last guy we signed who fit this bill, we’re in for a treat. Scroll down if you need to follow the link.
With Kennedy and White gone...
We have 14 forwards and 7 defensemen on the team. If we subtract Prospal and Drury from the equation since they are currently injured, i am looking at these lines for opening night:
Frolov-Christensen-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Ansimov-Callahan
Avery-Stepan-Fedotenko
Boogaard-Boyle-Prust
Staal-Girardi
DelZotto-Sauer
Rozsival-Gilroy/ Eminger
Lundqvist/ Biron
If I was Sather, I wouldn’t make any other move besides trading either Rozsival or Eminger.
Rozsival’s going to start with MDZ, Gilroy with Sauer. Otherwise that’s the lineup.

Switching 2 & 3
Does anyone else think the supposed 2nd and 3rd lines (as proposed danmarley 21 above, and many others) should be switched. I just think Aves/Stepan/Fed-ex will be more offensively productive than Dubs/Anisimov/Cally if given the opportunity (ice time). As several people have been saying, Dubinsky has heart, grit, etc. but he really struggles to finish.
Just a thought.
Worst day: April 10, 1984
I think it would be an error
To put Dubinsky on the third line, the same can be said for Anisimov. It is likely that the ‘2nd’ and ‘3rd’ line will get very similar minutes and ice time. I am sure that Stepan will see some PP time (as will Feds probably). An important thing to note: the lines and roster at the start of the year is not going to be the roster and lines in a month, by mid-season, or by the trade deadline.
In Hank we trust.
No, I think Dubi has a chance at 25 goals this year if he plays a full season and they aren’t forced to move him back to center. Cally can probably hit just around 20 and AA probably has 40-45 points if those two hit the aforementioned goal amounts.
Even with top 6 minutes it’s tough to see Avery hitting 20. I will be pleased if Stepan can manage at least 75 games and 30+ points.

As inconsistent as Avery was last year he still managed to put up 31 points. I think if he gets top 6 minutes, he’s capable of putting up 40-45 points. That is if he plays consistently through the season.
I think that's the big question with Avery's play
He has some raw skill but he never brings it to the table on a consistent enough basis. The other thing is that Anisimov-Dubi-Cally are probably more integral pieces to the organization than Avery is (on a long term outlook). If nothing else I’d love to see AA develop into a bona fide 2nd line pivot.

Kennedy
I don’t really mind waiving him… there is no certainty he will be claimed… plus he isn’t a big player, he is shifty, but a lot of people react as if we just waived gaborik… he was a spare part… you cannot go with a line up of 21 rookies… it just doesn’t happen… there has to be some veteran presence in the lineup, and I doubt that Kennedy is going to be able to mentor players as Fedetenko will be able to… Fed also brings something that many o ther players on this team don’t have, and thats a winning mentality… He’s won two cups, one with torts…
Plus if Vinny’s indeed done for the year, fed takes his position as middleman between the players and torts…
Kennedy is the type of player that people fall in love with, much like peter prucha, whom is nothing more than a third line winger at best…
