Blogger's Breakouts - New York Rangers

Best Value for Money Fantasy Goalie? I think so.

Just a quick note: I was asked to do this for the new fantasy hockey site here at SBN... Fantasy Hockey Scouts. I've been following the site for about a season and a half now - and those guys do great work. If you're into fantasy hockey at all they do a great job of rounding up the news and up to date. So thanks to them for letting me represent Blueshirt Banter and hopefully it's a good read.

So the FHS guys gave me 9 questions their asking one of every SBN blog writer about their teams. Eight of them are standard across the board, but the Bonus question is very much team specific. Here's the bonus...

---

BONUS)  We're not the biggest fans of Torts from a fantasy perspective, do you think he's getting all the offense he can out of this team?

Good question. Tort's is always trying to keep EVERYONE on their toes - including us Blueshirt fans. In my opinion he shuffles lines too much - which from a fantasy perspective is annoying and usually ends up hurting production. He's trying to build a complete unit out of the Rangers that's not too dependent on one facet of the game, but in all honesty scoring is the biggest issue. The Rangers will never be the Washington Captials (meaning goals whenever they want) because that would require a decent GM. Basically, unless you're in a deep league with 20 teams - stay away from the Rangers offense with the exception of Gaborik.

Follow after the jump for the 8 FHS questions that include the Rangers breakout player of the year, my attempt at picking Taylor or Tyler, and my non-conforming Stanley Cup pick.

Star-divide

Q1) Rangers Breakout of the Year?

Derek Stepan, hands down. He may not have a Tavares (54 pts) or Stamkos (46 pts) rookie season, but if he plays the whole year with NYR he's a lock for 25 to 30 points minimum. Because of his solid play this pre-season many Ranger fans want him centering the top line with Gaborik and Frolov, and I think eventually he will get a shot with them over the course of the season. If he sticks it with that line mid-season he could blow my points floor out of the water, though. The kid can play.

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on the Rangers?

I had to think about this one a bit, but came up with nothing concrete. Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky are good for 40 points, and Callahan's career year should come this season or next in which he'll put up a number around 50. Artem Anisimov had 28 points over 82 games as a rookie last season, but it seems that Tort's doesn't want to give him a good shot a second or third line yet. So, the answer for this question isn't a breakout player but a bounce-back player in our new top-line left-winger Alexander Frolov. He played decent in pre-season and should play the whole year with Gaborik on the top line and the first power-play unit. I've got him pegged for around 63 points, but if Torts sticks to his guns and Gaborik puts up 90 points again that number could rise a bit.

Q3) Breakdown Player on the Rangers?

Call me a crazy Ranger fan, but we don't really have anyone on paper at the moment that we're expecting a huge drop from. The only player I predicted to drop in overall points from last season was Vinny Prospal, who now may miss the entire season if he goes under the knife for his knee. All of us Ranger fans hope this is not the case as he played very well last season, but at this point it's not looking good.

Q4) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?

Now the real fun begins. As much as the easy pick here is Tavares, I like to go real dark-horse and throw out some names that may require a re-read. I picked up Peter Mueller in my dynasty league this summer and if he gets the concussion issues panned out I think he finally found a permanent home for his talents in Colorado. Colin Wilson of the Nashville Predators looked really sharp at the end of the season last year in the Central. Jordan Eberle out in Edmonton has looked filthy and Tyler Ennis in Buffalo will bring the points to Western NY. Clarke MacArthur will get a top-six shot on a fun Toronto team to watch and my last must-know name is coming from Dallas; Jamie Benn. Last year he put up 41 points over 82 games and no one said a word about the kid. I've known him since his days in the WHL (2 season over 1.00 points-per-game) and I think he'll put up another 40 points again easily.

Q5) Who are your First Five Picks in a Fantasy Draft? (no blurb needed)

First five: Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos, Sedin, Backstrom.

Q6) Best Value for Money Fantasy Goalie?

Bias rules once again, but my first answer to this is Henrik Lundqvist. Only Miikka Kiprusoff has played more games than him the past three seasons, and the Rangers should see a little boost in scoring (meaning more wins for Hank) this season. A dark-horse here though has to be Marty Turco, who will play in front of the defending Stanley Cup champs and should see a rebound from his recent Dallas days.

Q7) Taylor or Tyler? (short-term and/or long-term)

Both? These two have the potential to write another Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry type story with their ridiculous talents. I'd say short term that Tyler has the advantage with a deeper Boston lineup and a team that will be pushing for a solid playoff run. Long term I don't think there is much difference, and with that said they could end up with the same point totals this season. If you can get both on your team for a keeper league - you'll be all set.

Q8) Your Stanley Cup Pick?

I hate conforming to an easy pick, so I'll go out on a limb. I absolutely love watching the Los Angeles Kings, especially their series against the Canucks last season. I think Jonathan Bernier could pull a Niemi this season and take Jonathan Quick's job - and goaltending was arguably the Kings biggest issue last season. The Kings define the "new NHL" game, so if you can catch their games as much as possible.

Basically, unless you’re in a deep league with 20 teams – stay away from the Rangers offense with the exception of Gaborik

I couldn’t agree more – although frolov would seem to be a good option, contract years are always a good bet

I think that Del Zotto

Dubinsky and Callahan (if your league uses hits as a point total) aren’t bad calls either. Anisimov could be a sleeper, but probably not worth an actual draft pick.

Only thing is his plus minus, which hurt Kovalchuk in previous years.

Not to mention Frolov might get 300+ PP minutes, which he hasn’t had in years. That alone makes him pretty valuable.

Totally agree about the Kings, one of my favorite teams besides the Rangers of course. I think they have the potential this year to go really deep in the west and challenge teams like Vancouver, San Jose, Chicago, and Detroit.

Yeah ever since they got Kopitar I have liked them and who doesn’t like Dustin Brown.

In an Ideal world, I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

I'm rooting for

Anyone but the ‘Nucks out west. Even the Sharks. Everyone’s anointing the Shamus as the Cup favorites and I don’t think any team that’s rolled out some of the most hideous jerseys the sport has ever seen should lift the Cup.

idk man….bad jerseys aside….there is no way you can hate on the sedins…i think they’re great….and alex burrows is someone ive really started to like too….now if he could only get off the IR and be useful on my fantasy team.

word

the Kings are my team besides the Rangers, always liked the Kings
sucks they lost Frolov but watching alot of Kings games I was actually hoping Frolov would be on our radar
him and Kopitar were really good together
Kopitar actually reminds me alot of Gaborik

man Henrik’s mask this year is sick
thats the best design he has had on his mask yet
the guy who does it I saw a website just of NHL goaltender’s masks, anyway he does work for alot of guys
def a great artist
love the crown around the number and the Liberty logo

Kopitar is the passing version of Gaborik. Creating offense all by his lonesome, waiting for the perfect partner to team up with.

Stepan

I think he is gonna have around 45 pts
that guy just oozes talent
I couldnt help think to be reminded of Shannahan when Stepan played
thats who he really reminds me off

45 points is fair – thats my range for him

by John Merrigan on Oct 8, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to s**t on the Stepan bandwagon, but here’s the list of 20 year olds who had at least 45 points in their 1st year, since 2000: Ovechkin, Malkin, Backstrom, Richards, Berglund, Cogliano, Frolik. He’s not in the class of the first 4 (though maybe eventually he could match Richards’ production)

The last 3 each had at least 18 goals. They each had at least 166 minutes of PP time. I’m not sure Stepan will reach either of those marks unless Christensen gets off this team I hope he does, but I don’t see it.

Bold.

Stepan makes flying around in dirigibles fashionable again.
During the All-Star break Stepan spends time in a laboratory and announces to the world that he has created the same super-soldier serum that made Captain America in comic book lore.
Stepan manages to score 5 goals this season while on his stomach, tapping the puck in with the butt-end of his stick as if it were a pool cue.
Much to the displeasure of his teammates Stepan begins to have an entourage follow him around. Stepan also insists that his pet albino alligator is allowed in the locker room.
Stepan’s career ends this year when he is banned from the NHL for throwing his stick like a javelin at an opposing player (and impaling said player) who insulted the state of Minnesota.

Stepan’s career ends this year when he is banned from the NHL for throwing his stick like a javelin at an opposing player (and impaling said player) who insulted the state of Minnesota.

….but he’s back in 2011-12 under the assumed name of ryan mcfadden and averages 72 goals a year for the next 15 years

I will go along with it

He was on NHL Live today, I can’t find a link to it but if any of you know where to listen to the show after it was on the air, just a heads up.
