The Derek Stepan Show - Rangers Take Season Opener
It's a Saturday night - this is going to be short and simple.
Derek Stepan picked up a hat trick tonight.
If you haven't seen it yet - you would be foolish not to watch.
Stepan was so spectacular that Brandon Dubinsky gave him some love and things got weird.
I guess what I'm trying to say is..

Random Stats of Worth
Del Zotto was a +3 tonight. Good start.
Anisimov was the only minus, at -1. He did take 11 of the 22 defensive zone draws for the team, and won 5. Good, not great. If Torts is going to roll that line for the role while Drury is out, he has to consider letting Dubinsky take those draws, as he did late that led to his EN goal.
Stepan, despite 3 goals, led the team with 3 missed nets. Clearly some of that Higgins stink is still in there.
The Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan line was 1-2-3 in ice time among the forwards tonight, or more specifically, 2-3-1
Boogaard made $3325.94 per minute tonight.
My unofficial count of scoring chances was 17-15 Rangers, with most of Buffalo’s coming late in the 3rd when the game got out of hand (7 of Buff’s chances in the final 10 minutes). No other advanced stats yet.

nice to see AA get serious ice time as he earned it tonight. as far as the draws, seems like dru might be back for the home opener so just one more game.

Like I said in the GT, the story was going to be about how much AA progressed (to me anyway) , he looked fast strong confident /until Stepan came on in and said “whats good son” to Ryan Miller or something like that..lol
In an Ideal world, I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Yeah
but I still like the Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan line. Problem is, where do you put Drury?
He isn’t going on the first line, and there is no way that Tortorella is breaking up the third line. So if he replaces anyone off of the second line, they are going to the 4th.

I'd like to keep line 3 together
You could play Dru on the wing on line 3 and bump Avery down, scratch Boyle or Boogaard (or Prust for that matter). Let Drury take the faceoffs. You could even play Drury as the 4th line center or play wing on the 4th line and take the draws instead of Boyle (who is dreadful at them).
There is a lot of debate about what to do with Drury when he comes back going on right now on BSB, I think the best thing we can all do is realize that he is the captain of our team and he is going to fit into the lineup somewhere. It will probably cost Boyle his roster spot.
In Hank we trust.
i think that picture looking like Boyle is trying to grab Stepan’s tit is at least as disturbing as the Dubi thing.
To repeat a tweet i made, “Everyone lay off Dubi for kissing Stepan because all #NYRangers fans wanted to kiss at least one Stepan tonight, at least he got one.”

Two thoughts watching the hat trick video
Joe Micheleti loves him some forecheck, and the third shot was a thing of beauty. Great feed, great high shot over Miller’s shoulder

Same two you mentioned, and I agree with power forward and chiacrack.
I hate to nitpick such a glorious evening for Rangers fans, and I saw a ton of good things tonight but why was Boogie even playing?
Play him against the Flyers, Leafs, but not Buffalo, they don’t have a counterpart for him. He just doesn’t contribute anything against non-physical teams like Buffalo.
It seems pretty clear that when Drury comes back Boyle’s the healthy scratch.
well they just brought him in, so they want him to be playing early. Once he settles, they’ll start benching him.

Overall a good game
Our second line (Dubi-AA-Cally) looked real nice, hopefully they continue to play well together. Steps with a debut of historical proportions (i believe that it was a natural hat trick just adding to the illustriousness). Not to mention a solid PK (they killed off 5 penalties if I’m not mistaken) which was reminiscent of last season But it wasn’t all good.
Hank let in a couple of garbage goals (but I’m sure it’s just him working out the pre-season kinks), and the defense looked a bit shaky at times. Also the first line didn’t quite seem to click like i was expecting, but that’s probably just due to EC (i like him a lot, just not as a #1 centerman). The PP didn’t really click either (0/3 and i don’t think we even had a SOG) which makes me nervous; a better showing with the man advantage could end up winning a few games for the blueshirts down the line.
I don’t worry about the PP so much, Buffalo was one of the best PK teams in the league last year. It’d be one thing if we were 0-5 or 0-6, you can live with 0-3 against a team like them.

Good and fortunate...
While the forwards helped out alot on defense and they scored big without Gabby, Buffalo was really awful. I was also concerned that Rozsival was really having an especially hard time getting around. Not that I expect much from him and he may be still working through an injury, but he will get alot of ice and if he weakens their top 2 D groups they are really gonna get exposed. The 3rd group is likely to be a liability, whoever plays. They will “miss” Redden if they have to rely on 44 at all. Some very tentative moments last night for a veteran. I like Callahan alot, but they have some depth up front and Id swap him for a comparable quality young D man in a heartbeat.
But, hey, they beat the pants off Buffalo and overall the youth is finally looking like they may be good enough to help the team take the next step..could not have a better start.
Great Game!
What is the freakin big deal? Dubi kissed his freakin face shield> he didn’t ram his tongue down his throat and grab his junk for Chrissakes.

Dubi and Step
You know, I hope they are gaying it up.
If the team sucks at least they’ll be a lot of good puns. Like
“Man this team sucks… But not as much as Dubi”
or
“They were really sloppy on the PK last night…. Not as sloppy as Dubi’s kissing abilities (ask Stepen)”
just kidding. ..

Great opening night game!
The team skated well and applied pressure all night. The up-tempo Tortorella style was in full effect. Gotta keep it rolling monday afternoon and on fri nite. And hey oldman, Stepan hat trick was not a natural. Dubi scored the 2nd goal of the game.

A Natural Hat Trick
Is when you score three goals in a period, and we know what a Gordie Howe Hat Trick is. We need Torts to roll three lines, don’t break up this chemistry. The other lines will start to click.
a natural hat trick is when you score 3 goals in a row, without anyone else scoring (on your team). Stepan’s mom and sister are both really hot, I hope they go to a lot more games
Hey, you’re right, according to Wikipedia. I always thought it was all in one period.
Love the picture on the Wiki page—AO’s hat trick against PIT last year in the “Snovechkin” game.
So now two rookies in two years have debuted with tricks, correct? Stepan and Brunnstrom?

Not to be a downer...
…but Eminger was flat-out awful. Two significant blown coverages, an equal amount of penalties.
I do hope Boogard gets more minutes…that is, if he decides to cover his man more. I watched him – twice-over – hover versus mark his man at the point. I think the guy has more; he needs to show it.
Boyle lost his edge from the pre-season. Remove an ‘A,’ guy turns soft.

Not to be rude
I do agree with you on he fact that eminger was aweful…i would’ve been happier to see gilroy get the start over that p.o.s. But how could you and why would you ever think that boogard deserves any more ice time. One second of ice time for him is one second too much. I hope slats intends to call don king and se up a fight for boogard on an off night because unless we are playing a rival team wig a bruiser, the boogeyman has absolutely no place on this squad
by mickeymuffinz on Oct 10, 2010 9:44 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
boyle didn’t have a bad game. was effective on the penalty kill, threw his body around, skated well. hes not going to get anywhere near the amount of ice time he got in pre-season.
eminger wasn’t great but i wouldnt say he was awful. i was pleasently surprised with sauer, steady game and very sure of himself with the puck on his stick.
rozsival was terrible – completely missed clearing the puck in the crease on one of the sabres goals.

I honestly thought Stall was our worst D-man, tied with Eminger.
Del Zotto looked great out there.
I like what FedEx did on the PK in the first period.

no he was a lot better then preseason
In an Ideal world, I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
No rudeness, implied (but thanks for being kind, nonetheless)... :)
I stand corrected; Boyle was strong on PK. I did, however, find him a bit sluggish at even strength, defensively. Just one man’s opinion. It seems a very isolated one based on above.
Boogard…I’d like to see more of the intimidation factor come into play. And I can’t shake the salary (I know, I know) for less than 7min of ice time. If we have an enforcer, we should use him. Bang around some opposing forwards, open up ice for teammates to work. Take pressure off our D on the forecheck as a result. I don’t want to stifle a strong offence to do it, however (which we had on opening night).
Excellent point on MDZ; much improved out there.
Sorry, John; I found Eminger hopeless. Lost, out of plays consistently.
"...also I'll brush my teeth and remember to turn off the stars at night and put the hyena out." ERNEST HEMINGWAY
I think you’ll see maore big hits and more of Boogey in general if:
A: He skates better. He’s sooooo slooooowwwwww
B: If we are down or even.
We were up why give Boogey instructions that could lead to a penalty. I do agree he should have sat for tonight. Put Gilroy in as a forward. See what happens.

but thats not affecting the team right now buck.. drury is here whether you like it or not..
were not sending him anywhere.. and we have a logjam at forwards.. so if it comes between drury and boyle.. we choose drury..
the cap doesnt matter right now. they dont get more/less money based on how much they play.
but your logic if drury is getting paid that much more than he should be playing more. it would be a much better use of money if he was getting playing time

Isnt this the fourth time in NHL history that a rookie makes a hat trick in his first game?
I belive Fabian Brunnström of the Dallas Stars was the third 2 seasons ago?

I was also impressed
With Anisimov. Stronger on his skates and keeping his head up.
Reading a couple of blogs recaps, still can’t believe people are complaining about Staal being soft and praising Eminger. Girardi played well IMO and Sauer had a quiet night in a good way. Frolov had a quiet night, not in a good way.

First Impressions
I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but I’ve followed the Rangers for 53 years, and what I saw last night doesn’t impress me.
They didn’t win, the Sabers beat themselves!!! I saw nothing outstanding in ANY part of thge Ranger’s game——-mediocre goaltending, defense, PP team and offense (except for a hot game by Stephan).
If the Sabers were on their game, they would have run the Rangers off the ice. This was a gift!! Let’s just take the win and run home, but let’s realize there’s plenty of things that need improvement in order to get anywhere this year.
Relax Miatajay.........
it was a great 1st game…..(key word being 1st). alot of areas to tighten up but alot of things to be happy about.
by giantsNYrangers on Oct 10, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions
They still had to make sure the Sabres paid for playing a sloppy game. How many times last year or in recen years have we seen the Rangers not take the game to the opponent?
The D did a good job pinching and keeping the forecheck pressure all night long and they didn’t get burned by Buffalo’s run and gun style that they usually struggle to contain. Still a lot of work to do but to get 5 goals (plus a shorthanded empty netter) is a good start by almost any measure.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Oct 10, 2010 2:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
While at work...
I missed the Rangers blowing out the Sabres and Derek Stepan getting a hat trick. I don’t know whether to be thrilled for the team (and Stepan) or pissed off that I work at night and missed the game and may miss other weekend games.
Great way to start off the season. Absolutely great. I watched the game on my DVR- I have no comment on the Dubinsky kiss… maybe he was trying to get some magic… he did get the empty net goal.

Very happy for the kid. Very happy to see that the future of the Rangers is in good hands. Can’t wait for Kreider to make the jump from Boston College and hopefully start in the NHL. If he goes to the AHL, then fine.
I think Kreider and Stepan has to be on the same line because they know each other from that World Junior Champions team.

That’s not the soundest of logic. Any “chemistry” built from being on the same team in a 7 game tournament can be overtaken by the chemistry built in weeks of practice with the team. Chemistry Is a pretty overrated and overrestimated concept. If you play enough with someone, you’ll know where they’ll be. It’s simple and can be applied to anybody.

Recap --
The best part of this game was that we are finally able to rotate three solid lines. If we can keep that up it will be really hard for teams, in this cap climate, to match up shift to shift with the rangers. If they stack for Gaborik and Frolov, the second or third line will burn teams where they are week. Eminger did not look good. Booger looked horrible. Sauer skated very well. I’ve been extremely happy with Anisimov this year. He’s a KEY link to our teams balance. We need to win draws at both ends if we’re going to be successful as the season progresses. Avery was just fantastic as was that whole line combo.
Again, I got the sense that Buffalo’s strategy was to block our first line and they were TOTALLY unprepared for how well Sather, Torts and the entire organization have been grooming our youth. So they were simply burned by our 1-2-3 and a 1/2 rotation. This is why all of the preseason polls on the rangers are so far off.
I repeat what I’ve been asserting since last Spring: the Rangers will seed fourth or fifth in the east this year and push deep into the playoffs.
d
Anisimov is much stronger on the puck, and can now use his skill to make plays. He is a key cog to this lineup.

it’s time to go to Long Island and kick the living shit out of the Islanders.
No letdown, like the team did all too many times last year.
so what do do when drury gets back?
id like to see them keep these lines together.. put drury on the 4th.. and shift boyle to LW..
if they really want to i guess let stepan center the 1st line, keep the 2nd line together, and put drury on the 3rd.. if they want to do that then i guess u bench/4th line christensen

I agree that the Rangers must go to the Nassau Mausoleum — as Steve Sommers likes to call it — and thump the Icelanders. The LI boys looked scrappy and tenacious vs. Dallas. They are missing Streit and Okposo and now Tavares. Give them no quarter! We need to go 2-0-0.
