Rangers Recap: Gaborik Gets the Hatty as Rangers Smack the Oilers, 8-2
If you follow me on twitter (@RangersTribune) you would have seen my prediction just before puck drop, calling that Marian Gaborik would score his first goal of the season this afternoon. Well, Marian made me look like a genius just 1:35 into the first period when his hard work on the rush resulted in a blue collar goal at the top of the crease. I'll admit, I am no psychic so that was just pure luck, but either way was pretty cool. Anyway, the Rangers did a great job of defending that lead for the remainder of the period, killing off two penalties and outshooting the Oilers, 7-4. That was definitely one of the most strategic twenty minutes the Blueshirts have played all season long.
Things opened up in the second, though, as six goals were scored between the two teams. Ryan Jones would first bury a rebound from the side of the net to tie the game at one. Just 28 seconds later Shawn Horcoff's long wrister deflected off the stick of Marc Staal and knuckled past Martin Biron. The Rangers came booming back, scoring three straight unanswered goals. The first came when Marian Gaborik took an Erik Christensen pass on the breakaway and deked Nikolai Khabibulin out of his skates. That would be Gaborik's second of the game and tied things up at two.
Following that, before fans could even sit down after the Gaborik goal, 24 seconds later Ruslan Fedotenko fed Brian Boyle for a one-timer, which Boyle slapped to the back of the net for his eighth of the season and the go-ahead tally. Later in the period, on the powerplay, Derek Stepan made a very strong move out of the corner and threaded the needle with a beautiful pass to Artem Anisimov. The puck actually went off of Anisimov's skate, so the play was reviewed, but ultimately deemed a good goal. And then Christensen got his third assist of the period when Alexander Frolov (!!!) redirected his pass behind Khabibulin. The Rangers' four goals in the second set a season high for a single period.
The third period was a real treat as we got to see some old time hockey as well as another three goals by the Rangers. It all began when heavyweights Derek Boogaard and Steve MacIntyre went at it to open the third. I give Boogie the edge in that one since he landed some big rights to MacIntyre's head. A little over five minutes after that, they dropped the gloves again in what was more of an even scrap. Then things erupted when Sean Avery sort of gave Ladislav Smid a cheap shot. Smid wanted to fight Avery after a hit on Fraser and it looked like Sean originally turned it down. But then Smid looked back at him and said something so Avery dropped the gloves and socked him square in the face.
The official was leading Avery off the ice and into the locker room when three Oilers tried chasing him into the tunnel. Thank goodness Brian Boyle was there to block them, otherwise there would have been a brawl in reach of the fans and things would have gotten ugly. Meanwhile, Brandon Prust was fighting Zack Stortini and Brian Boyle was going at it with Whitney. Also, Brandon Dubinsky was trying to grab an Oiler and throw some fists from the bench, which prompted coach Tortorella to grapple him down and out of trouble. I found that part of the madness pretty comical actually.
Anyway, Brandon Dubinsky was thrown out, Sean Avery was thrown out, Brandon Prust was thrown out and so was Brian Boyle. If that's not old time hockey then I do not know what is. I think it sparked the Rangers even more, though, as they went on to score three additional goals in the same period. Alex Frolov capitalized on a turnover and scored his second from the slot. Ruslan Fedotenko's spin-around shot beat Khabibulin after that, and then Marian Gaborik scored on the breakaway to complete the hat-trick. I am out of breath just recapping that entire third period, which was comprised of a total of 23 penalties.
Marian Gaborik, in only his second game back from injury, was obviously this afternoon's player of the game. He was flying out there and that directly led to all three of his goals. To me, he looks 100 percent, especially since he got up after sliding shoulder first into the post in the second period. And not only did he lift himself with his performance, but he also lifted his linemates as well.
Erik Christensen had three assists in the contest in what was by far his best game of the season. Also, Alexander Frolov scored TWICE. Not once, but TWICE. It is about time he found the back of the net and you see the impact he can have on a game when he starts scoring. The first line led the team to victory today and that was the bottom line.
Artem Anisimov played very well yet again, as did his wingers Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan. They did not exactly input a whole lot offensively, but I thought they were the best defensive minded trio today. The Oilers did have some chances earlier in the game and these three, especially Callahan, hounded them. Containing Edmonton early was key, because then they were worn out by the third period when the Rangers took over.
Derek Stepan I think also deserves a shoutout here because he played some smart hockey. The pass to Anisimov for the goal was tremendous and he backchecked like an animal too. He is improving every game right before our eyes.
On defense, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi were phenomenal. First of all, Staal made rookie Taylor Hall's life a living hell this afternoon. I highly doubt Hall has received so much physical abuse in his entire career as he did today, but I give him credit because he handled it well. Also, Staal made the defensive play to shutdown a breakaway which led to the Boyle goal in the second.
Marty Biron had a pretty easy outing, only facing 21 shots. He looked good for a back-to-back and gave Henrik Lundqvist an opportunity to rest up for tomorrow's showdown with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Hopefully the Rangers saved some goals for those Pens, because we know they will be much more of a challenge than the Oilers were today. Tom Renney's boys were simply too sloppy in this game and were burned on costly turnovers. This game meant a lot to Tom, but he walked back to the locker room with his head hung low today.

So Gaborik returns
has 3 goals and an assist.
Frolov has 2 goals and 2 assists
Stepan has 2 assists
Coincidence? Yeah Gaborik wasn’t directly involved with Stepan, but boy he makes space for everyone else.

Yep...
and now our second and third lines are right where they should be…no longer trying to perform first line duties.
Hopefully Staal will keep this kind of play up. When he does his job the team has a chance to win every night. I haven’t reviewed the match and was distracted for a stretch, but from what I saw he almost deserves a star.

I got a heartattack when i saw the replay of gabby falling into the post with his shoulder.
But i guess 2 more goals is evidence enough that he didnt feel it.

I actually liked that
I think that this team is just that much closer than the teams of the past. That’s a great thing in my opinion.

really? After Gabby went ‘injured’ shoulder first into the pipes, you think it was good that Christensen jumped on him and jammed his shoulder into the ice further as Gabby was trying to recover? I love the excitement, love comraderie – but thought it was a stupid way to express it.
I was cringing – Get Off His SHOULDER! haha
Great write-up Nick!
Predict more Gaborik goals, he matches your prediction x3. So predict a goal or two from him every game and we have this season in the bag. ;)
Gaborik was absolute magic. Frolov looked great with Gabby and Christensen finally came out of his hibernation.
The Boogaard vs. MacIntyre fight(s) was a real treat, get to see someone Boogaard’s size get man-handled by the biggest heavyweight in the game (MacIntyre is 6’5").
The only negative about this game is that the Rangers may have as many as two players suspended (Avery and Dubinsky). I don’t see why Avery would get a suspension- but he might get one for being Sean Avery in that chaos (the hit was clean, the fight was a dirty move by Avery but I am not sure it was ‘illegal’), I expect Theo Peckham to get a suspension (if there is any justice), and I expect both Fraser and Dubinsky to get supplementary discipline for their exchange (Dubi on the bench, Fraser reaching into the bench). We will have to wait and see I guess.
Offensive orgies are always fun, so long as you are the team doing the… uh… ‘orgying’.

Avery, Dubi and Peckham should all be suspended.
Peckham’s could end up being a whopper considering what could have happened. You really need to send a message that running into the tunnel is a no-no.
Dubi should get a game. You just can’t get involved if your on the bench.
Avery should get a game too for his cheap shot on Smid. Plus, a repeat offender and a general jack-ass.
Frasor should be suspended one game too. Not sure why Avery would get suspended other than he’s Avery. Which would probably be more than enough for the league. Sure what he did may not have been ethical but it’s not illegal. Smid dropped his gloves before Avery hit him.
When Smid said let’s go, Avery didn’t. if your going to fight, you don’t wait until the guy is skating away.
glad Boyle and the linesman stopped the scrum from going down the tunnel. Shudder to think what might’ve happened.

Carcillo got suspended for his hit on Bradley which was the exact same thing…. Both I thought were a mix of a cheap shot and one guy just being way quicker on the trigger than the other guy.

Yeah I think Dubi and Pekham should definitely be suspended. Not so sure about Avery though, because he didn’t exactly do anything against the rules. He threw an early punch when a player wasn’t fully prepared for it. That isn’t so bad that the league would have to take action IMO.
Fighting from the bench is a whole different scenario though. Unfortunately Torts could not get a hold of Dubi in time to stop him, but throwing punches while you are not on the ice will get you into trouble. And trying to get to a player in the tunnel is even worse, so Pekham should be penalized as well. We’ll see what happens. They will have to make a decision soon since the Rangers play tomorrow.

Call me crazy...
Yes, we played well at both ends of the ice, and yes we should be playing with that much intensity every game.
However, Edmonton is BAD. Like, really, really, really bad… So bad, in fact, that I’m taking this game with a complete grain of salt in evaluating our team. I would be impressed if this Oilers team can win 25 games this season.
HA
Sad but true. If we put up 5 goals against Pitt tomorrow, THEN we should get excited.

Suspend ?
Avery might have delivered a bit of a “cheap shot” — but how many times was Smid gonna say, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” Are you seriously gonna keep yelling that you wanna fight and not be ready when the other guy drops his gloves? This was NOT a Carcillo deal where he threw a punch before the guy had his gloves off. Smid dropped them, and just wasn’t in the position to really defend himself. But since HE was the one looking to throw down, that’s his problem. I really don’t know if Avery will be suspended for it. If he does, it will be because of his name, not because of what happened. I’m sure Dubinski will get one game, which sucks going into Pittsburgh. But the true test here is to see if the league gets this right and comes down hard on the other Oiler players involved, who clearly disregarded every rule in the book, along with common sense.

If Carcillo or Cooke did what Avery did today to Girardi, everyone would be calling for a suspension. Then if it didn’t happen, there would be some conspiracy theory about how the NHL hates the Rangers (the biggest TV market in the US). Avery just showed today why everyone in the NHL hates him, rightly so. Even Lou DeBrusk on Sportsnet (who praised Avery all game long, saying when he wants to play he’s good) said what Avery did was disgusting and a cheapshot. Louie DeBrusk, a guy who knows something about fighting.
You mean Smid not Girardi.
And I agree with you, I don’t like what Avery did, it was a dirty play. He waited for the moment where he had the unfair advantage when Smid wasn’t playing attention and threw a haymaker right at his head. Smid’s gloves were off before Avery’s fist made contact, but barely. I’d go as far as to say Smid was more or less defenseless to the punch.
Side note: It also looks like Avery cut his hand on Smid’s visor when he threw the punch, I don’t know how serious the injury is but I saw blood.
In Hank we trust.
ill admit is was a cheap shots of sorts.. but by no means does that play warrant a suspension… go find a rule against it..
how about the oilers having 8 men on the ice during a fight..

There's no way Avery should be suspended
You may not have to like what he did but it was far from illegal. First off Avery probably didn’t say no to smid after he wanted to go. I watched the game minutes ago on DVr cause I had work. He more than likely stalled talked a litle around the subject and waited for the play to get in the rangers zone. As stupid as many may say Avery is he is pretty hockey smart. So with the play in the rangers zone aves dropped his gloves. Smid was ready cause his gloves are off, last I checked your really not suppose to let the guy your fighting your about to get things going quick. So many fights start like that, they all just don’t end with a ko. Normally when fights start quick like that the guy who is surprised tries to grapple, Smid just backed up that’s def a no no when fighting. So I will be surprised if Avery is susupended doesn’t take a genius to see what I saw. How was that dirty I swear just because someone is tactical and lands a quick first punch doesn’t mean it’s dirty, if you watch he actually misses with his first punch so he already swung once. If it happened to girardi yea maybe we’d make it a big deal. Guess what it didn’t, last I checked your a ranger fan, move on it’s a won fight and we won the game.

From NHL.com
Rangers forward Sean Avery dropped the Oilers’ Colin Fraser with a clean hit along the boards. Ladislav Smid came to the aid of Fraser and asked Avery to fight. After both players dropped the gloves, Avery floored Smid with a right hand.
The key words are in BOLD. Hopefully the league gets it right.

Post-fight...
Missed the game, but thought I saw a comment on a blog somewhere that Gilroy jumped up to play forward after all of the misconducts? Is that true? I know that’s what he used to play growing up, so makes sense, just looking for confirmation and wondering how he did. He ended up with an assist after the misconducts, so was that him playing on wing?
Gilroy was playing the wing on the seventh goal. He forced the turnover at the blueline to Stepan who fed Fedotenko in front for the tally. Staal and Sauer were on D.
I also noticed Gilroy getting a huge pat on the back from Tort’s in the third. Good to see him make the most of this chance with Rozy out. And the Rangers with 7 solid D – it’s been a looong time.
by SimpleManiac on Nov 15, 2010 12:52 AM EST up reply actions
Good stuff, thanks for the info. Glad to see that he not only did well on D with Roszival out, but that he also showed his versatility well when there was an opportunity to play up front. Feels like he’s been getting the short end of the stick a bit this season.

Great game for the Rangers. They played well and the NHL better suspend all those Oilers for that fight. And to some of you who think Dubi should be suspended for that Bench frakes, YOU ARE INCORRECT! How does Dubinsky get suspended for a game when it was Peckham that grabbed him at the bench and pulled Dubi towards the ice.
Before some of you assume that Dubi deserves a game, pay better attention to the video. Dubi got yanked by the drawstrings, he did not get involved on purpose.
by NYR #35 Richter on Nov 14, 2010 7:53 PM EST reply actions
what are you talking about? peckham went after Avery, Dubi was involved with Frasor and Dubi clearly goes down the bench and inserts himself into the Frasor/Eminger tussle before Frasor goes after Dubi
by Michael Gleich on Nov 14, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions
Have to agree with leetch
Just watched the replay again… Fraser gets grabbed by Dubie, then turns and tussles with him. Dubie was the aggressor from the bench. AND it wasn’t Peckham, it was Fraser. Peckham was fighting with Boyle in front of Edmonton’s bench.
But I guess it doesn’t amount to much if there are no suspensions coming.
Regardless, Edmonton is a weak team and we shouldn’t take too much out of this. The real test is tomorrow night.
Yes Dubi does go down the bench and talks, but not once did I see him reach out at Peckham. Peckham did the reaching. Why do you think Torts is trying to hold Dubi back.
by NYR #35 Richter on Nov 14, 2010 11:39 PM EST up reply actions
Watch again.
Dubie is the “instigator” in this. As Eminger and Fraser wrestled along the boards, Dubie moved his stick from his right hand to his left, took a couple of steps toward the scrum and reached out and gave Fraser a “face-rub” or headlock. Again, not a real big deal at this point, but not very smart on his part.
In this day and age of tighter enforcement I’m shocked no suspensions are coming.
Is there a video of this fight anywhere? I missed the game and of course NHL.com doesn’t have it in the highlights.
No Suspenions to either team.
As per the NHL Network:
There will be NO suspensions handed out, but potentially fines handed out.
How reliable this is, I can’t say. It is the NHL, it was shown in a graphic on the screen. “The NHL said no suspensions will follow.”

You can suspend Avery or not. I don’t think what he did was suspendable. Dirty, sure. Suspendable? Why? Seems like he should just get an instigator penalty on that.
But Peckham coming off the bench and trying to chase Avery down the tunnel? You HAVE to put a stop to that. Keep it on the ice. The moment it leaves the rink, you’re asking for a world of hurt.

Wow, I have never seen a more cowardly act than that of Sean Avery on Sunday. I can’t believe that any of his teammates think that this spineless piece of crap deserves to be on the Rangers with real men. The look of fear on his face when he saw Pekham coming for him was priceless, run away Sean, run away…..
Tell Smid if he wants to go then drop the gloves like a man and go. Avery gave a clean hit to Foster & not once did he complain. Smid didn’t expect Avery to get him and then Avery taught the whimp a lesson. Peckham is also a goon.

I’m not surprised there were no suspensions.
The OIlers guy tried to chase Avery down the tunnel but didn’t – Boyle stopped him.
Dubi never left the bench, and I didn’t see that he landed any clean punches from the bench.
Avery may have sucker-punched the guy, but come one – save the suspensions for the head-hunters like Matt Cooke who do real damage and let the guys play.
No one got hurt, and everyone had a good time. Except Edmonton.
As for the game, enjoy the result but take it with a grain of salt – we have 1 or 2 of these laughers every year, it will mean more when we can do it to top-8 teams.
Not that I really have an opinion one way or the other on whether he should be suspended, but there is a precedent of suspensions for what he did. Then again who knows WTF will happens with Colin Campbell’s random “justice” generator.

Great article, too bad
we’re all focused on 11:18 of the third. Before moving on to the hockey, my take on the altercation (because, yes, it did my heart good to see some old time hockey).
1. Looks like Dubi got grabbed, didn’t do the grabbing. Just my view, I could be wrong.
2. NHL rule states you can sub during an altercation, however, if ANY of the subs join the fray the suspensions are AUTOMATIC – 10 games and $10K
3. Avery declined, Smid said something that made #16 snap and got laid out. End of story.
4. Torts grabbing Dubi to get him free from Fraser was priceless. Torts knows he needs Dubinsky tomorrow night. I love that passion and remember HATING Renney for staying calm as a librarian when losing his cool was an absolute necessity.
Now the hockey story:
Gaborik with a hat trick in his second game back.
Frolov with 2 and 2.
The “new” first line putting up 11 points. This should give teams something to think when rolling their top D pair, eh?
Brian Boyle, who turns 26 in December, playing up to his first round draft capabilities.
Gilroy playing forward in the third
Stepan with two primary assists. In my opinion, outside of the obvious choice of Frolov and Christensen, THIS is the guy with the most to gain by Gaborik’s return.
Sauer looking like a blue chip D prospect and improving with every game.
Biron looking like more then just a competent back up to The King. In years past, Lundy being out more then one game was a guaranteed losing streak.
Good write up, Nick.

Great to be in 4th in the conference...
but I’m not getting too excited about this win. Edmonton is dead last in the Western Conference. That’s a team we should beat up on.
Even though this was against Edmonton, this very easily could’ve been a 2-1, or worse, defeat. Edm’s young forwards do have skill. Good to see us rebound from those 2 quick goals, and take care of business. We needed a big win like that on home ice. Glad Gabby is back (and his line went silly tonight), Loved that scrum too :D
Smid dropped his gloves, then tried to run, and got dropped.

But how many times have the Rangers outchanced an opponent only to continually miss the net or shoot directly at the logo on the goalies chest? Nice to see them make the most of the opportunities.

They certainly miss the net a bunch from in close. I think I’m the only one tracking the missed nets at the same time as the chances, so I don’t know how we compare to others, but it sure feels like it’s an above average amount.

Great game for us guys, awesome to see Gaborik looking good and also Frolov chipping in, what an amazing pass by him to set Gabby up for the hatrick!
As far as im concerned Avery got challenged after a clean hit, both guys gloves were off, he just got in quicker. If the other guy had not challenged him or dropped his gloves then I could see a problem with the punch. The Oilers had way too many men on the ice and thats the real problem. Renny should be made accountable for not being able to control his team. Torts was very active in holding Rangers players back from getting involved and renny did nothing at all. If Avery gets a game for punching somebody who initiated a fight then lets just ban fighting in the NHL altogether.
Amen.
You should see the numbers w/ and w/o Strudwick specifically though, he brings everyone down.

Then wouldn’t Souray be the better option, Tambellini should swallow his pride and play the better player.
Strudwick’s good in the locker room.
Literally, that’s the justification. Nevermind that he might be the worst regular NHLer since the lockout.

people watch the replay smid would not stop yapping at avery and never turned his bac k avery just got the first punch in so why was it cheap cause avery was faster
agreed. smid is no tough guy so maybe he should have kept his mouth shut. you cant challenge someone to fight and then be surprised when you get hit in the jaw. great game. i loved every bit of it. and i dont even care if there are suspensions because it sends a message to the league that if a team wants to have an emotional meltdown they should try it against the wings or habs.
