Rangers Recap: Blueshirts Overcome Adversity, Defeat Pens in OT 3-2

There are games in a season that a player, a fan, and even a coach will remember for the rest of their lives. Tonight's 3-2 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins was one of those games, and for the youngsters, was also a key learning experience as well. The Rangers showed heart, they showed persistency, they showed determination. They overcame adversity several times and earned a huge two points against a division rival. Yeah, I think this is one that I will save in the memory bank for a long time.

The Penguins heavily outshot the Rangers in the opening period, 12-5, and were dominating in the offensive zone. But Henrik Lundqvist was playing out of his mind and did not allow any of those twelve by him. The main event of the first was when middleweights Ryan Callahan and Mike Comrie dropped the gloves in the second half of the period. It looked like Comrie was doing a lot of yapping in Callahan’s ear at the faceoff circle just before the fight, and right when the puck was dropped both threw off their gloves and removed their helmets, proceeding to swing away. It was a pretty even fight; Callahan landed more punches but Comrie had the takedown in the end. Not sure what Comrie was saying, but apparently it ticked Cally off.

More Lundqvist domination came in the second period as he continued to stand on his head, specifically against Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins were given a powerplay in which they moved the puck very well and generated numerous chances, but Lundqvist wouldn’t budge and gave them nothing. Then, at the midway point in the period, Erik (the rat) Christensen scored on a spin-around shot that beat goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Ruslan Fedotenko picked up the primary assist on this goal against his former club.

Star-divide

Things heated up in the third period, mainly due to the extremely poor officiating that ‘just so happened’ to be in favor of the Penguins. Pittsburgh was really bringing it in the third and throwing everything they possibly could at Lundqvist. Just like the first two periods, though, Henrik was not about to allow the tying goal. That is, until the officials decided to take control over the game and give Crosby and friends opportunity after opportunity to come back.

First it was a weak call on Marian Gaborik for hooking, even though Pascal Dupuis grabbed his stick. Thankfully the Rangers killed that one off, but then came an even worse call on Ryan Callahan for holding, which was more of Evgeni Malkin losing an edge during a battle than Cally pulling him down. New York thwarted that powerplay too, but they were worn out at that point. The Pens came out flying and Chris Kunitz would eventually tie the game when Malkin took out Lundqvist, allowing Chris to bury a rebound into an empty-net with Hank down.

Just 38 seconds later Matt Cooke would score the go-ahead goal, prompting Lundqvist to slam his stick over the crossbar and fling it. Henrik was penalized for this, but I cannot blame him. He stood on his head and then the officials take that right away from him. I would be slamming things too.

Despite being shorthanded, Dubinsky and Staal were able to rush down ice with Lundqvist pulled and the extra attacker on the ice. Dubinsky made a drop pass to Staal, which Marc rifled over the shoulder of Fleury. That would send things to overtime, where the Rangers would ultimately get what they deserved. They deserved two points and they got it at 3:38 of extra time when Dubinsky and Callahan converted on a 2-on-1. Dubinsky executed a smooth toe-drag around a sliding defender to give Callahan a perfect feed, which Ryan easily tapped into the net.

I am not one to complain about the refs much, but what went on tonight was absolutely ridiculous and if I am GM Glen Sather, I am making calls to the higher ups in the National Hockey League. The officials tried stripping that game from the Rangers’ hands and win it for Sid and his little buddies. But in the end, that only makes this win five times better for the guys in white and blue.

The reason the Blueshirts won this game was Henrik Lundqvist, and I do not think there is a single person on planet Earth that will deny that. In his first game back from being under the weather, King Henrik made 37 saves on 39 shots faced. He made a countless number of sprawling stops, he was tremendous on the penalty-kill and most importantly, kept Malkin and Crosby off the board. His performance this evening was not human – plain and simple.

The Rangers’ defense also had a hell of a game. That starts with Steve Eminger and Mike Sauer, because to me they were the best on the blue-line for either team. Both were physical and both were lights out. And Sauer really impressed me when showing composure in overtime. He is a rookie playing in overtime in the craziest game of his career so far, but there he is lugging the puck and starting a rush. Good for him.

And then the big boys in Marc Staal and Dan Girardi were also solid. Girardi took a puck to the face late in the third and the blood was flowing from his face. In overtime, though, he was out there throwing around the body and doing everything to get the win. That is real heart and soul right there. Gotta’ love it.

The penalty-kill came up real big thanks to Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust. They did not allow a powerplay goal, including on a four-minute double minor that they killed off. As I have said again and again, Prust and Boyle are really starting to establish their role on this team and have become a part of the core group. They have been great so far.

Brandon Dubinsky is my offensive player of the game. He had assists on both the tying and winning goals, had several shots on net and his forechecking is just fun to watch. Him and Callahan were giving 110 percent effort all night long and earned that overtime winner. Their faces, by the way, were priceless once they won.

The Rangers improve to 10-7-1 with tonight’s victory and remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. They will host the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, looking to win their fourth straight game.

BEST GAME EVER (regular season)

At least that I’ve seen. Great goaltending. Come from behind. OT win. Girardi coming out minutes after stitches at full force. Home-grown players making the difference. Defying the refs.Cally with a Gordie Howe hat-trick. Absolutely everything. I sleep well tonight.

There are games in a season that a player, a fan, and even a coach will remember for the rest of their lives.

A bit much.

It was a nice win, but if the Rangers continue to lose 60% of face-offs, spend boatloads of time in their own zone (which leads to penalties, questionable or not), and expect Lundqvist to stand on his head every game, this game will be quickly forgotten and replaced with talk of firing Torts for missing the playoffs.

I don’t think its a bit much at all. This is a memorable game no matter what. You think Cally and Dubi will forget this one anytime soon?

Also, Cally and Dubi should be happy, they are actually playing the game and every point is putting more $$$ in their bank account.

There was a pretty sweet comeback win two years back with Zherdev (he should not be named) ripping a wrister with about 14 seconds left. Think it was against the Pens . . .

that was an awesome wrister from a pretty tough spot flying up the right wing, 8.1 secs on the clock, EN on our end. naslund and sjoe were on the ice, think nasy got the A onthe play. my buddies and i were jumping up and down punching the ceiling (upstairs roomies all Penn State grads, and we were having a huge party with tons of pens fans).

thanks for bringing back the memory. it reminds me that games like the one last night, just like that Z wrister, or for that matter Malik’s SO winner, or dubi breaking jeff schultz’s ankles against the caps (to name a few post lockout great moments) will be cherished and remembered for a lifetime.

Pessimist? Just pointing out the truth. Avery’s a punk just as much as EC is a rat. I think its unfair to only single out one of them.

Also, I’m not blinded by this win. I’m glad they won, but Pitt outplayed the Rangers. Lundqvist was amazing tonight. I’d rather see them win without him having to be unreal.

But I’ll admit I’m not like most of the people on this site. I’m a Ranger fan and watching them win the cup in 94 was tremendous, but I don’t seethe with hate towards Crosby, NJ, Isles, etc. I did when I was younger, but there’s no point to it anymore. The players don’t care about me and the game is just a game. I enjoy watching good hockey, whomever is playing it. As a result, I don’t live game to game and base my happiness on whether the Rangers win or lose. Therefore, I can sit back and actually enjoy and appreciate watching other teams play (even against the Rangers). So, I am not miserable, although I would agree with the pessimist part.

by NTB on Nov 16, 2010 1:05 AM EST up reply actions

fair point. the miserable was more towards a previous comment u made about us not making the playoffs, and that this game would be overshadowed by that. if we continue the pace we are at we easily make the playoff. it just seems odd to be a fan that doesnt experience pure happiness when we win. but if ur a realist hockey fan i can definitely respect that.

i hate certain teams/players since they deserve it. also, while the players might not care about you personally (a lot care about the fans) it is nice to have a place where everyone cares as much as i do (which is right here).

trust me i enjoy watching good hockey. i watch nice goal highlights all day and i enjoy watching teams like the kings and detroit and washington etc, but i dont enjoy it when its against us, especially in a game me tainted by the blatant bias of the officiating.. just a personal opinion, but i wouldnt have felt that pure rush of happiness tonight if i didnt hate pittsburg, and i think that explains why the majority are more happy than u. but ur a hockey fan thru and thru and i respect that.

That’s fair. And I understand why people are so happy. And I get the hatred, I can still remember back to ’94; I think I woke up my entire block screaming during that NJ series.

Just a further example, I want the US to win in hockey, but damn do I want the pros to keep playing more than anything. Those US-CAN games were just a joy to watch.

by NTB on Nov 16, 2010 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

good point. i misunderstood earlier what u were saying about the playoffs. im feeling pretty confident about this team right now. who knows what we will be saying in april, but for now im happy and proud. i think we can all agree that we want it to keep up. i guess as ranger fans we have earned the right to be pessimistic, but ill personally choose to be optimistic, at least for now.

and yeah i enjoy olympic games too. i enjoy great hockey games. they probably lower my lifespan by 6 months a piece but i enjoy them nonetheless. i just dont enjoy when the officials are blatantly bias and try to ruin a game that could otherwise be great. that is hard for any hockey fan to enjoy

Great write-up Nick. This is the first game that has me convinced that we are truly a better team than last year.

Last year, we lose this game. No question.

They’re starting to rewrite the script, and it’s through hard work, good team play, phenomenal goaltending (last year Hank would have played against Edmonton and probably run out of gas in this one), and tough-mindedness.

Right on boys. Keep it coming. We’ll get Thomas on Wednesday, not Rask like last time.

True, but we practically never won overtime games last year.

by Joe1969 on Nov 16, 2010 1:50 AM EST reply actions

There is no way EC finishes the year on this team. He is a decent player but is easily replaceable especially when Drury and Prospal returns. I think that when Drury gets back to the lineup he will center Gaborik and Frolov, and Christensen will be relegated to being a healthy scratch and a part time fill in. Once Prospal returns, however, barring any unforeseen injuries, Christensen will hardly ever see the ice. The comments about Avery don’t do much to help his case either. Anyway, it was an unbelievable win tonight and the Rangers really showed some heart tonight, especially Staal, Girardi, Callahan, Dubinsky, and Lundqvist. There is nothing better than beating Cindy Crosby on her home ice.

by MMeiselman731 on Nov 16, 2010 1:57 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think Drury can keep up with them, besides EC has looked like a different player the last 2 games. Not the ideal but it can work.

He did

stephan played a good part of the game between Frolov and Gabby. It was short lived as the parade to the penalty box began in the third, but I think he added some great energy to that line. I agree about EC and his ice time though, as injuries come back I could see EC, Avery, White and Boogie rotating the scratch duties. time will tell. BTW – any more word on Drury? I’ve heard two more weeks – that’s something like 3 months for a broken finger? He could have grown a new one in that amount of time.

drury will probably see time in the bottom 6, with stepan probably being sent down. hate to say i, but its probably true. who do u send down when drury gets back. stepan or boyle? boyle has been great, so its stepan.

once prospal gets back tho christensen is most likely a scratch. hell most likely center the first line, keeping the second line intact. either way we have a lot of options and flexibility, which is good for us.

We can keep Stepan up, if we scratch Boogy and EC and send White down to Hartford when Prospal and Dru come back.

by EricBrat20 on Nov 16, 2010 3:38 AM EST up reply actions

I dont think Drury is the answer either but in my opinion he is the stopgap as our first line center until Stepan can take over that role. Ideally, Stepan matures fast enough to become our first line center by playoff time, but most likely it will take him a year or two. Is it possible that Drury could become our third line center and Boyle could take over on the first line? He has been outstanding so far this season and is skating extremely well. His size would also benefit Gabs and Frolov.

Observations

The Rangers are becoming a team that other teams don’t like playing.

I love the grit, hard-nosed style we have this season. It seems that the stronger our young players get, the better we play.

I am really impressed with everything about this team right now.

Just need to stay consistent and improve the PK.

by Peterman700 on Nov 16, 2010 2:41 AM EST reply actions

+1

The shot blocking, solid forechecking and great goaltending will drive opponents nuts. Its great to be that team – they’ll always have a chance to win if they play like that.
Oh and I love seeing Girardi and Staal knocking Crosby on his ass. Just wish someone went after him after he took out Hank’s skate as he skated by. For one of the “faces of the league” that guy is truly a bitch.

so i found out that stepan stopped scoring after the first game cause he was afraid of what dubi would do next :)

Any idea what set off the Callahan fight?

Seems out of character for him to drop the gloves off a face off. Comrie must’ve been talking some serious shit.

Good question

I was curious about that myself. First shift he and Cally were on together he went right over.

Comrie ran his mouth for 10 seconds. Cally said nothing, then just smiled, took off his gloves and helmet and gave Comrie a beatdown. Priceless.

by SimpleManiac on Nov 16, 2010 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

Not this year

When the Pens scored the go ahead goal, I grabbed the remote in disgust and was about to turn the game off. I decided not to and to be honest, I wanted to see how Hank would react to this situation. Seeing him smash his stick on the crossbar was something new. Drawing a bench minor was equally out of character. I feel this show of emotion fuels his teammates play.

I think it is clear that we are watching the transformation of the clubs identity and a good amount of credit should go to Tortorella. I complained all last year that he was switching up the lines too often. He’s keeping them pretty consistent this year so maybe that has something to do with it. Either way, the team has taken on a new persona and the result of this game solidifies. They are relentless in their pursuit of victory.

Couple of side notes:

Girardi’s courage defines what hockey players are all about.

Can Gaborik get a solid pass though the neutral zone. It always seems like he’s dealing with a Mexican jumping bean (the puck).

The picture of Cally, Dubi, Staal celebrating the game winner was awesome. Home grown talent getting it done.

by slipperymick on Nov 16, 2010 8:06 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I Agree

Great shot of the homegrown talent (Cally, Dubi, Staal) celebrating at the end of the game.

Also Larry Brooks interviewed Hank and he said,
“I’d like to see the penalty record the last five years in Pittsburgh,” said an annoyed Lundqvist, who was brilliant throughout the match. “We’re shorthanded so many times in Pittsburgh and it’s definitely not our fault.”
- It’s a good question, I feel like these games are very one sided on the part of the officials.
Anyways, great game.

Out with EC

I know he scored an important goal last night, but I was very disappointed he was on the ice. Just as the Rangers are so close to really solidifying as a tough, cohesive team, that sort of treason needs to be dealt with seriously. I think if Torts benched him it would have sent a strong message to the players and community about what the Rangers are all about. EC should be ashamed of what he did. In my opinion it was more cowardly than anything Avery has done his whole career. I still love this team but I’ll never respect EC.

Crosby’s comments after the game sum him up quite perfectly… Saying Lundqvist wasn’t anything special and didn’t take anything away from them. Bravo, Mr. Crosby. I guess if you don’t get the spotlight, nobody else is allowed to have it. Absolute refusal to acknowledge an awesome game. Other players and every fan was able to see it, but not Sidney.

not to mention the fact that

where the hell was the goalie interference penalty on Crosb!tch when he blatantly took out Hank’s skates ???? i guess ALL the officials just happened to miss that one.

But i’m sure if it was another player like Avery, they wouldn’t have thought twice about blowing the whistle then would they?

by DJ Chicken on Nov 16, 2010 10:00 AM EST reply actions

If it was Avery, he’d get 2 minutes for goalie interference, then another 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct for bitching to the refs about it. Upon exiting the box, Crosby would skate by him and grab his face like he just got punched, then Avery would get a 2 min roughing, 5 minute misconduct, 10 minute game misconduct, and 10 game suspension from Campbell. The e-mail response would read “That’s for messing with my golden goose. If you didn’t know the Pens are as untouchable as mafia bosses, you know now, spread the word! – Campbell”.

by Kritikal on Nov 16, 2010 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Man, the refereeing was absolutely atrocious that game. I saw 2 completely bullshit calls, and a good 2 non-calls (all to the Pens favor, of course). I think there was one non-call on us, but was offset by the double minor not much later.

Crysby must be teaching Geno the Art of Diving, because he drew a nice one grabbing Girardi’s (I think) stick.

Cooke scoring that goal on us was pretty heartbreaking, he had way too much time and space inside the right face-off circle to pick his spot. I would be pissed too if I was Lundqvist, standing on his head the entire game to lose in the last couple of minutes (a.k.a. typical Rangers coasting late in the third). Dubinsky setting up the tieing and game-winning goals was beautiful, though…

I had to watch the FSN Pittsburgh feed for this one, and god it was awful. I’ve said it many times, they rival Chico in the homer department… when Crosby blatantly ran the King, they were like “incidental contact… DEFINITELY incidental”. I wanted to throw stuff at the screen.

Great game nonetheless, so glad we got the 2 points with the deck stacked against us from the start.

by Kritikal on Nov 16, 2010 10:19 AM EST reply actions

I’m hoping McIlrath can develop like Staal has… solidify his positional game first, then let the offense come. I hope his injury isn’t serious, last thing we need is a [you-know-who] 2.0 where an injury kills his pro career before it starts.

by Kritikal on Nov 16, 2010 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

If you watch at 1:38 of the third

both Eminger and Del Zotto have their hands up when Dupuis has the puck (obviously over the blue line) along the right boards wondering where the HELL the offsides call is. They’re both positive the play is dead and stunned for a sec. Pascal takes it back onsides and hits a streaking Cooke before our D could recover.

So add a blown offside to the one-sided penalty calls.

by SimpleManiac on Nov 16, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

I have to say, I’m trying to see it on the TSN feed and I don’t see an offsides. Dupuis has the puck on the blue line the entire time.

by Lunkwill Fook on Nov 16, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Cooke was onside, MSG feed never showed it, thought he had to be as deep as he was when he got the puck.

by Kmp on Nov 16, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Cooke was onside, but Dupuis wasn’t he crossed over the blueline and left the puck behind.

That doesn't matter

As long as you maintain control of puck, which Dupuis did. The puck, under control, can follow you over the line.

it was bad D 3 guys converged on Dupuis.

by Kmp on Nov 16, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, 1:58 not 1:38.

It was Dupuis who took the puck offsides, not Cooke. Lunk is right, from that angle you can’t see the puck so no way to tell. Maybe the lesson is for the D-men to keep playing until they hear a whistle – they let up and we should have lost the game as a result.

by SimpleManiac on Nov 16, 2010 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

yea...

why are the d-men going to stop playing and look at the ref? that’s an inexcusable mental breakdown on our part.

by voice22 on Nov 16, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Wee wee wee all the way home

I’m so happy we beat Crysby. Malkin is starting to resemble him as well. It reminds me so much of Lepew and Jagr. Lepew was the

What happened to honest hockey? Don’t get me wrong I know Avery “embellishes” (as Crysby likes to say) but I’ve never seen so many players go down from random contact as the Pens. Avery didn’t get the call because it’s Avery and he jumped. (I have to believe that cause the only other reason It’s a Ranger). But Crysby goes down like he’s been hit by a truck anywhere around the net and then looks for a call. Malkin is tying up with players and then inexplicably losing his footing as soon as he loses the puck.

The refs need to conference after the call. It always seems like the close in ref isn’t making the call against the Rangers but the Ref on the other side of the world. Have a conference if there is disagreement, make the right call and have a faceoff in center ice if they were wrong. It’s simple. Otherwise I have to agree to Coach’s challenge. The refs have made it a reasonable idea from just so many bad calls in a really short period of time.

by Leetch4prezofNYR on Nov 16, 2010 10:39 AM EST reply actions

The worst part is

That when Crosby wants to control the puck and work his way along the boards, he’s almost impossible to knock down. He’s got an extremely low center of gravity. So him going down from normal contact is highly suspect.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Nov 16, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

open ended question?

three games ago numerous posts suggested that we would seroiusly be missing Rozi after he was hurt. I’ll pose the question – is this a better or worse team with Rozi in the lineup?

by bleed'n blue on Nov 16, 2010 11:06 AM EST reply actions

If we move Gilroy to wing once Rozy comes back, I think I could live with it. White would have to go, and Stepan would have to be sent down for it to work, though… decisions, decisions…

by Kritikal on Nov 16, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Sit EC and waive White. I like Stepan. He’s not a scoring powerhouse but he has good vision on the ice and passes well. EC isn’t living up to his end of his contract.

by Leetch4prezofNYR on Nov 16, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

Gilroy is a beast down low along the boards in the offensive zone as well, but EC has lived up to his contract now that Gabby is back. Yeah, hes an awful teammate, and could spend a year with Calli learning how to give 110% every game, but he’s been finding his mark with Gaborik, hence tacking him after that 2nd goal to say “thank you so much, i’ll be on the team for another week now”

by Tomass2132 on Nov 16, 2010 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

It’s really nice to see Torts system finally settle in with the players early this season. They’re forchecking hard with 2 guys and the D are consistently pushing up. Even though Hank kept them in there it was still a great character win. In years past they would definitely have lost that game despite an outlandish performance by their netminder.

Except for the holding call on Calli, I really didn’t have a problem with the calls made on the Rangers. They were mostly legitimate. What is not legitimate, though, is the lack of calls against the Penguins. It seems like for a while there the Refs forgot there were two teams playing last night.

It was nice to see Gilroy joining the rush as well. Although the numbers are against him once Rosi comes back, it’s nice to see him battling to stay in the lineup. On the other hand Del Zotto needs to get it together. He made some glaring mental mistakes last night and overall has been weak this season.

Pens Can't lose a game with Style

This toilet paper from the Pens side of things just goes to show their sense of entitlement to success is ingrained in their fan base as well. They disparage the Hank and the Rangers instead of Crysby and Malkin for not scoring. Did they watch the same game? They dominated play but couldn’t score on Hank. I would be freaking on the star players as we do whenever the Rangers are on the losing side of a game like this for not scoring or congratulating the opposing goalie for a great game.

I hate the Pens a little more today.

by Leetch4prezofNYR on Nov 16, 2010 12:37 PM EST reply actions

They're not as bad

As other Pens blogs. They make fun of their lack of potency on the PP a lot too.

It’s not worth arguing with Pens fans about Crosby and whining and diving. They’ll bring up the fact that he’s always the target of hits, cheap shots, etc. Maybe he is to some extent, but you don’t see other superstars pull half the shit he does.

I’ve detected a sense of worry with their team. If Sid and Malkin aren’t consistently beasts, or you can hold them in check then the rest of their lineup isn’t necessarily equipped to do a lot of heavy lifting.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Nov 16, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

He gives more cheap shots than he gets. He’s totally full of shit. Did you ever notice how when he answers reporters in postgame, he makes eye contact with the reporter a few seconds, looks away in phony thoughtfulness, and then makes eye contact again at the end of his (inevitably boring) answer? EVERY TIME. Something he obviously learned from a public relations specialist.
He’s a great player, but not impossible to shut down.

by Joe1969 on Nov 16, 2010 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. I would love to see a stat (George?) of Crosby vs top teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if his stats go way down vs top ten teams.

I’m always complaining that we do so well vs teams like Edmonton and then look like punks against the Capitals. To me it shows we are where we belong in the standings because we do well against the teams below us in the standings and struggle with the teams above us.

The Rangers aren’t the Islanders when it comes to facing Crosby:

Career vs NYI, 32 games played, 62 points or 1.9375 pts/gm
Career vs NYR, 35 games, 50 points or 1.428 pts/gm
Career vs PHI, 35 games, 60 points or 1.714 pts/gm

His best pts/gm are against Nashville and Colorado at 2 pts/gm
His worst pts/gm are against SJ and Vancouver at 0.25 pts/gm
