Rangers Captains for post Drury years

I think last night proved the potential that the rangers have.  I believe under no circumstances should Sather trade Cally, Dubi, AA, Boyle, Prust or EC.  Keep gaborik and hank in the mix and we'll have a playoff worthy team every season.  There is so much young talent young talent on this team, I think we have a legitimate shot at the cup this year.

My vote would be Callahan gets the C, keep Staal with an A, and give Dubinsky the other A, what do you guys think?

Agree

with everything except for keeping EC. Too enigmatic IMO. Replace him with Stepan and I am in complete agreement.

I still feel we need a true #1 Center for Gabby’s line.

I agree with you on EC. He’s too inconsistent. Maybe Stepan can develop into that first line center we’ve been looking for. You never know until you give him a shot. I say play him with Fro and Gabby for a while and see how he does. Maybe they can help him develop because it’s not too difficult to set Gaborik up for a goal (since he can score from almost anywhere) and it would probably do wonders for his confidence to rack up a few assists.

I like your chutzpah, your moxie, your “spanish nuts” as Pauly once said to Rocky, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, a legitimate cup contender is a strong statement for this team. Let’s see them make the playoffs first, then we go from there.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

we are a legitimate 6-8 seed contender

by Kevin Power on Nov 16, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Hey you never know. Look at what Montreal was able to do as an 8 seed. With Biron being able to give Lundqvist more off days this season maybe he won’t burn out by the end of the season and can get us a run for the cup like Halak did last year.

Not disagreeing with you at all. Playoffs are a whole new shootin match, and anything can happen. But we’re not even twenty games in, and while I am very encouraged by what I see from this team, but they are a long way from punching their ticket for the dance.

Future Captains

I dont know if he leads in the locker room but Girrardi hascertainly been a leader on the ice all season. I’d give him one of the A’s for sure.

almost hesitant to make this suggestion ...

With all the insane trade ideas that I’ve read, I couldn’t help it about EC:

Rozi / EC to CAPS for Knuble / Chimera

CAPS need the defensive help, Rozi has the minutes to show he can eat up time. I think both his and Knuble’s contracts expire in 2 yrs. So that’s a wash for both. EC may perform better in a more offensive system where there’s a lower expectation for secondary scoring. With Drury coming back and Stephan playing well we’re pretty deep at center. So basically we’re getting a young winger for Rozi before his contract expires.

by bleed'n blue on Nov 16, 2010 4:28 PM EST reply actions

Rozi would make their defense worse so I doubt the Caps would be foolish enough to accept that.

by swissmix19 on Nov 16, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Rozi has proven himself more from maybe middle of last season till now. So I’m not writing him off yet. Plus he’s the only vet on defense. (staal is 23 I think MDZ is 20, and girardi is 25) so we need the experience

by Mmckee319 on Nov 16, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Knuble goes UFA his summer, and I think Chimera the summer after. Caps are going to be tight with salaries, as Carlson, Alzner, Varlamov, Green, Fehr go RFA soon and Laich, Semin UFA. The Caps can only afford picking up very short contracts and/or cheap contracts.

Also, don’t the Rangers need blue line help too? If not they will after trading away Rozi.

all the more

If the CAPs are serious about a cup run this year before they go through the Chicago house cleaning they better shore up the D now (they probably need a goalie too) … so Rozi may be one of the few possibilities to pick up without giving up too much. Cosider him a 2 year rental; here are his cap numbers:
Rozi: Cap Hit: $5 million. 2010-11: $4 million. 2011-12: $3 million
Knuble: Cap Hit: $2.8 million. 2010-11: $2.8 million. 2011-12: UFA
So they pay a little more this season (don’t know about their cap space), and only .2 more than planned next season as knouble would be off the books anyway …

Legitimate cup contender???

Can I get some of the meds your taking??? I am and have been one of the more optimistic fans this season, but I still don’t think we’re even worthy of home ice let alone a Cup run.

If I had to guess, I would say 2 years…. IF a few things work in our favor.

I like Cally with the “C” but I think Dru gets the rest of this season to prove it’s his.

by NYdemo on Nov 16, 2010 4:28 PM EST reply actions

I strongly believe Callahan should and will be the next captain. Not just his abilities. But the way he handles himself, with the grace of a 20 year veteran. I also believe the A’s should be Staal and either Dubi, stepan,AA, or maybe one of the future prospects (kreider or Thomas). First we have to hope the front office relizes their mistakes and sends dreary tithe minors next season

by Mmckee319 on Nov 16, 2010 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Drury isn’t going anywhere. He has a NMC (no movement clause) which means he would have to waive it for the Rangers to send him to the minors which isn’t going to happen.

by EricBrat20 on Nov 16, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Think you nailed it.

I really hope both Dubinsky and Callahan are around in about 4/5 years.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 16, 2010 5:03 PM EST reply actions

Sooner rather than later

There’s no place for Drury on this team unless someone gets hurt. Not that he is a poor player, he just doesn’t fit anymore. Who would you sit? Drury or Chrsitensen? Drury or Boyle? Drury or Avery? Drury or Stepan? White is an easy pick but then what do you do with Prospal.

by It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime on Nov 16, 2010 5:42 PM EST reply actions

Is Prospal

even in the picture this season? I haven’t heard a word about his condition or any estimated return date. If I’m not mistaken, he’s on a one year contract, and at this point, any guess on who he replaces this year is moot. Anyone have any solid info on him?

by Budbear on Nov 16, 2010 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

He’s been doing Physical Therapy and rehab daily, HOPES to be skating before the new year, realisticly, he’ll probably be skating mid-late january. Skating doesn’t mean he’ll end up returning by the end of the season, no one actually knows til he feels it out.

by Tomass2132 on Nov 16, 2010 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure we should worry about Prospal just yet.

Besides what does Prospal have to do with Drury’s spot on this team at this point in time?

by NYdemo on Nov 16, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Avery???

Is Drury a left wing?

Who is going to start winning faceoffs?

Christensen is teetering on a demotion and if it were not for the return of Gabby to open up some room for him he might be the obvious choice. Stepan has been so/so lately and could find himself getting some seasoning in Hartford with Drury’s return.

by NYdemo on Nov 16, 2010 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I like dubi for the A just hope the contract goes smooth so it doesn’t effect the team in a negitive way

i still disargee

with not having a Captain on the ice right now.Drury is not the only worthy “leader” on this squad.we should have a captain dressed for every game.

You dont need a C on your jersey to be a leader. And you dont need a C on the ice to talk to refs. That’s what the A is for.

by GBK2 on Nov 16, 2010 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

i understand what you mean.

all i’m saying is,the “C” is always earned and never given.so why not reward Cally or Dubie for their hard work and give either one the letter.imagine the confidence boost that it would give to any young player moving forward.i think if you gave it to either of the to,their intensity level would raise to a higher level and so to would their game.it’s not over rated to be a Captain,it’s an honor and somebody on the ice every night working hard should receive that honor.when drury returns he can have it back.

Well, theoretically, but some studs like Crosby don’t always have to earn it…he has since, though.

I think it is more a tradition thing. I can see if not having a player with the C on his jersey left the team at some kind of disadvantage but guys are wearing the A so they are the leaders.

Drury

I know a lot of people love drury because he’s really good on faceoffs and the PK but I honestly don’t think that’s a good reason to trade EC.

EC may not be liked because he talks shit about Avery but he isn’t going to slow his line down on 5v5 hockey, like Drury would, and with that said most of the game is 5 on 5.

My biggest issue with trading anyone right now is that we have a good team that is beating really good teams (chicago, pittsburgh, etc…) The concept of trading a player to another team because you “think” it’s going to make your team better is somewhat silly, when your team is winning.

If the rangers were losing and had a plethora of crappy centers then fine… trade away, but don’t be surprised if you get some mediocre center in return who ends up not doing a thing.

My suggestion, play it by ear. Let’s see what happens when drury get’s back, if he plays well then great, if blows then he’s a healthy scratch.

Finally, I gotta say it, I don’t understand this allegance to Drury, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but let’s be honest with ourselves. This team is performing without him and I think trading away someone because you don’t like him sends the wrong message. In fact it’s very hypocritical, people want to trade EC because they don’t like him, however, Avery goes around doing things that are much more detrimental at times and he’s put on a pedistal.

my biggest issue with trading EC

is that no team in the league would be interested

by chuck1ley on Nov 16, 2010 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you there chuck, i don’t really understand why we would trade him. It’s not like we r going to get that “missing piece”

by NewburghHockey on Nov 16, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

yes for cally as captain .

cally will be the captain of this team for years to come but it is a respect issue to let drury keep the c until he is no longer a ranger the man paid his dues to earn the c over the years give him some respect and wait till he is gone thats all i,m saying .
