Rangers Analysis: When Drury Returns Who Goes?
After breaking his finger in the first game of the season, Chris Drury has begun skating again this week and is inching closer to returning to the lineup. When he finally makes his return, somebody is going to lose significant ice time and quite possibly their roster spot as well (that' would be you Todd White). The Rangers have struggled on face-offs all season long and it seems likely that Drury will be returning as a pivot instead of shifting to wing as hes done in the past.
Currently there are two center spots that seem to be guaranteed as both Artem Anisimovand Brian Boyle have solidified their roles down the middle. This leaves Derek Stepan and Erik Christensen battling for their ice time when The Captain makes his long awaited return.
After an unmatched debut with a hat-trick against the Buffalo Sabres, Stepan has cooled off and has been roughing it out through most of his rookie campaign. However, Stepan has yet to look out of place in the Rangers lineup and has not been a defensive liability. He has also made progress over his past five games and is once again beginning to generate scoring opportunities.
Join me after the jump for more.
Erik Christensen has thus far been rather unspectacular. The same inconsistency that nearly knocked him out of the NHL a little less than a year ago has once again been a problem. EC has the talent and the size to be a very good NHL player but he lacks the confidence required to play his game on a nightly basis. Tortorella is known to be frustrated with his inability to transfer his skills to game situations. There is also the Sean Avery fiasco in which he unceremoniously chucked his teammate under the bus to the Edmonton media. The situation has been 'handled internally' but it seems fair to guess that his actions didn't bode too well in the locker room. His comments may not have severely hurt his cause, but they sure as heck haven't helped him.
It's difficult to determine which of the two has played better with Marian Gaborik since he has missed most of the season. And even though Christensen has started the games centering the top line since Gabby's return, more often than not it has been Stepan who has finished them in that spot.Tortorella has given subtle indications that he trusts Stepan more than EC as he has played him in high leverage situations. Torts hasn't been afraid to put Stepan on the ice in the final shifts of a close game and he has had nothing but good things to say about him to the media. Stepan presents a greater upside and a higher potential than EC. Stepan is the future of this organization and when a decision needs to be made, it will likely be Christensen who finds himself in a shirt and tie on game-day.

Great writeup, John...
I agree with your points, EC is definitely the odd man out once our forwards are healthy, and White is gone as soon as either are back. The projected lines look pretty good, especially if Drury can win face-offs with his recovered hand, and Prospal still has the spring in his step to keep up with Gaborik:
Dubinsky – Anisimov – Callahan
Frolov – Prospal – Gaborik
Avery – Boyle – Prust
Christensen – Drury – Fedetenko
Staal – Sauer
Rozsival – Girardi
MDZ – Eminger
Defense is in shambles with so many LD… I sense a trade in the midst…
RD..we’re loaded with RD. Only Staal and MDZ are LDs.
Also, you have Christensen in your lineup even as the odd man out.

Stepan's finally coming into his own
or at least looking that way. Remember that he was supposed to see time with Gaborik from the get-go (by the way George this isn’t to you specifically lol).
Now that Gaborik’s back he’s been much better.

Oh, wow...
I completely forgot about Stepan… could place Drury on 4LW and Stepan on 4C, letting Drury take the face-offs… Christensen would be out in the cold :P
I am thinking EC goes, but on the other hand it might not be such a bad idea to send Stepan down for a dozen games or so. Stepan is having a typical rookie season, but there are moments when he shows that he will be a very good offensive player (talking about his awesome passing ability). He has not scored in almost 20 games and when you re not scoring you’re usually losing confidence. At this point in his young career he needs to be scoring goals and developing and I think he needs a few games in the AHL. I m pretty sure that if he is sent down, he will play awesome down there, score a lot and get his confidence back and then he can be called up to the big club and continue his development. Any thoughts?
my thoughts exactly...
I love watching the kid play, but I wonder if he would stand to benefit from a little time in the minors. In terms of EC, he is so frustrating to watch. Every time I am ready to write him off, he does something brilliant. I just wish he could sustain it.
Anyways, it will be good to have Drury back. It is getting tough to watch our faceoff stats….
He has not scored in almost 20 games and when you re not scoring you’re usually losing confidence.
Stepan wasn’t a goal scorer in college (NHL equivalent of about 9 goals per 82), and despite the opening night hat trick, should not really project as a scorer in the NHL either. I don’t see any reason to believe that now suddenly a lack of goals is hurting his confidence at all. The 11 games without any points OTOH, probably had at least a little effect, but with 3 points in his last 3, he’s probably turning it around.
I don’t like the idea of sending him to Hartford at all really.

I know he is mostly a playmaker, but I still think he would benefit from playing a few games in the AHL against a lower level competition. Goal scorer or not, he would definitely get goals down there and I m sure it would boost his confidence.
No one..
Ever gets better by playing against lesser competition. Cofidence may take a hit being sent down..
Not necessarily true if it’s a question of top line minutes against the top lines in the AHL versus low minutes against checking lines in the NHL. If he’s going to get good playing time at the NHL level I hope he stays up.

Exactly my thoughts
You wanna get better, play against the big boys cuz that’s the best way.
by Travis Juszkiewicz on Nov 19, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions
What I mean is that the AHL is lesser competition then NHL, but still a step up from the NCAA. Lets agree to disagree.
He’s keeping up with NHL speed and skill levels and holding up against NHL size. He has once again started putting points on the board, even if not goals (although his passing was good even during his points drought). There is nothing for him to gain by playing in Hartford against weaker competition when he can hold his own against NHL competition.
Idk what the hell is going on with the Whalepack, but I’d rather keep Stepan up in NY if they can help it.

Same George
I like him with the big club. Stepan figures to be a playmaker, but he can put the puck in the back of the net too.
But he’s definitely not the type of player to judge that he’s not doing well because he isn’t scoring. THe goal will come eventually, it’s his vision now, however, that makes him so special.

My feeling is more the lack of any thing resembling confidence in the Whalepack more than the necessity to keep him here. If I thought he would actually get a big minutes/leadership role in Hartford, by all means that’s an acceptable option.
If he ends up with 30 points this year, it’s perfectly acceptable. I know in preseason people liked him for 40-45, but that’s just not a realistic total for a 20 year old.

aspect of stepan’s game is his play w/o the puck. he’s very responsible defensively and that will keep him in the lineup when he’s not producing this season

No question in my mind
EC should go. EC and Stepan have the same amount of points thus far. Stepan is 20 years old and has great vision and passing skills. As he gets more used to the NHL speed his play making is only going to get better. As John says in the article he hasn’t looked out of place at all. EC has a very solid +/- but to me the choice is clear. Sending a kid with massive play making potential to the AHL would be a mistake.
Great points all around.
White is obviously the first to go regardless IMO. Again, It seems to me Torts isn’t using his players properly. He gives guys like Fedotenko and EC such long leashes although the later he may be tightening the reigns. While he has guys like Avery & Stepan are playing limited minutes. He also contradicts himself from the beginning of the season where he said if Stepan made the team, he wanted him to play and get minutes. I could see Stepan going down for a stint because EC is capable of playing wing but I understand the point of Gernander & the AHL in general regressing him.
he wanted him to play and get minutes.
He’s getting 10-15 a night, with the PP time. His TOI for the year is comparable with many of the rookie forwards out there. Early in the season he was getting 17-20, but that was too much too quick, I believe.

If it ain't broke....
I know Drury HAS to come back. But he shouldn’t (barring injury). The team is playing differently than it has in the “Drury era.” It has taken on the personality of its young leaders (notably Callihan and Dubi). Even the penalty kill has been real good the last few games without him. (Do you put him back with Callihan on the PK instead of Dubinsky? I don’t.)
I know he’s coming back. Sit Boogaard except against the Flyers or others where his talent might be needed. Let Drury play the wing.

Agree
Although I don’t think breaking up Cally/Dubi on the PK is that big of a deal.
Booger should be sitting. Although i’m not a big fan of Christensen he is a hell of alot better player than Booger is. Have Drury take important faceoffs and then slide him to wing.
Stepan is doing pretty darn good for a rookie. Do not send him down. If it’s between him playing and Booger it’s a no brainer.

Where do you think Dubi and Cally learned their leadership from? DRURY. We need to give this guy a break already. No he isn’t #11, but he is a competitor and a leader by example. He wasn’t brought in here to score 30 goals a year (eventhough he gets paid like one of those guys), he was brought in to provide leadership. Nobody on the team is better at face-offs and Cally learned his PK skills from Drury, who is one of the best defensive forwards we’ve had since #s 9 and 11. Plus he makes things happen in front of the net. Drury is coming back and my guess is that he fits right into the way this team has been playing all year and makes it even better. I would not mind seeing him get some time with Gabby and Frolov. I think he might actually be a better fit there than Stepan. I say dump EC. We’d never miss him.
I’m not saying Drury is not all of those good things. It’s just that he’s superfluous.

The situation has been ‘handled internally’ but it seems fair to guess that his actions didn’t bode too well in the locker room.
Pure speculation. Many in the locker room could be thinking the same exact thing as EC. Many in the locker room may hate Avery. Many in the locker room may think EC did the right thing. Most likely, many could give two shits about the whole situation and it’s already forgotten.
Just b/c the fans think something, doesn’t mean the players do. I would hazard a guess that the correlation b/w what fans think and players think, on any issue, is close to zero.
eh idk, its sort of disturbing having a teammate railroad one of his guys to the media
i think the fact avery couldnt care less about what he said and Torts handled it so quickly helped.

One does question what happened that Avery went from consistently 14-16 min a night, to 7-10 minutes a night, with both 7’s being since the Edmonton game.
There’s likely no cause-effect there, but it is curious.

Digging slightly deeper, the actual drop coincides with Gaborik coming back (Avery went from 16 against Was to 10 against Buffalo). It’s probably just the numbers game that hurt him.

there’s a lot of talk about Christensen sitting in place of Drury, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Avery loses his spot – he really hasn’t been that effective of late, his ice time has dropped, and there’s a good chance Torts hates him.
I think it’s possible that Aves loses his spot sometime this year – or more likely, next year.
I agree completely.
I think this is the same as when fans think sather hurts player’s feelings by not giving in to their contract demands
by GAThingy on Nov 19, 2010 12:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I feel Stepan shows his offensive capabilities whenever he’s on the ice, the only problem is he is too slow, speed or reaction wise, to pull anything off. I feel he will have a decent rookie season when all is set and done, but over the off-season if he can get stronger and faster he will become an offensive force. just my two cents on Stepan, I hope he stays with the big club the whole year.

Stepan needs to be kept up here. I think Boyle is the center that changed things here he really stepped his game up. EC should be left out and Prospal Drury Boyle AA Stepan are our centers.

Trade?
You guys would know better. Is there a possibility EC, Gilroy, White or someone else can be trade bait shortly? And if so who would we want/need that we can fit under the cap?
The 23 is for Jeff Beukeboom, not Chris Drury ! LMAO
I’d move Christensen as I think there would be a good amount of interest in him from other teams. He’s got a cheap 2 year contract I believe. As for what comes in return, not sure. I’d like to see a prospect or draft pick possibly…obviously not an elite prospect or 1st round pick of course but something w/ some value that we can use since we have enough defensemen here and in Hartford.
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
White definitely not…he passed through waivers twice, no one wanted him for free, so they’re certainly not giving up something for him now.

Consider: Rangers deal Rozi and EC to WASH for Chimera and Knuble
Wash need the D help while the Rangers have been OK with Gilroy in the lineup. (We all said we want the cap space as well as the youth movement). Maybe EC would benifit by not being expected to handle first line duties. Knuble could take some 4th line wing duties that some have suggested EC moving to. Stephan (or Drury) takes Gabby’s center role. Chimera is the youth if/when Avery/Fedex doesn’t come back next season. Kind of works out for both teams?
Rozi: Cap Hit: $5 million. 2010-11: $4 million. 2011-12: $3 million
Knuble: Cap Hit: $2.8 million. 2010-11: $2.8 million. 2011-12: UFA

Makes sense
However – The caps have shown some glaring defensive weakness. Moving a fourth line winger who will be an UFA next season might make sense. Fans here have said Rozi is playing better, but I think the team has shown in the last couple of games they can survive without him. Chimera is the debatable point. He’s a hard working winger with speed, but as you said he’s 31 and isn’t relied upon for scoring. EC may entice them with his scoring ability. he’s shown he isn’t a defensive liability, and look – NY has even given him (albiet at times) 1st line duties. For NY it clears cap space, for wash it provides a little more scoring capabiltiy, and a D-man who has consitently matched up (how well is subject to debate) against other teams top lines. I just thought it sounded promising for all sides. I can’t believe I’m still debating this, as I usually ignore all the trade discussions as impossible. I did however, bring this one up, so I guess I’m telling myself to let it go. Funny how these conversations go …

Nice catch … but it’s tough to catch a diamond when fishing with turds. He would be a nice playing style fit, especially if, right or wrong, the way I figure is Avery, Fedex, Prospol, and (in my little deal world) knuble would be gone next season. Also, opens the cap space a year earlier to persue some other UFA (richards perhaps?) This is why I’m not a GM – it’s easy to sit here and pontificate, but it’s fun to do.

Tough call -- too many people dismiss EC
EC and Stepan have the same amount of points thus far.
But Stepan has all of his points in one blowout game. Christensen has huge goals against Chicago and Pittsburgh at key points in the game. He seems more of a “come up big at any time” kind of player (I refuse to say ‘clutch’ because he’s not there yet. We haven’t seen any of that from Stepan yet. I’m sure we will eventually, and I love the kid, but I don’t know if I’d really take him over EC at this particular point in time.

Christensen has also played ont he top line with both gaborik and frolov consistently where stepan has been juggled with avery, fedetenko, white, boogaard… It’s been quite obvious that EC has benefitted from gaborik…
plus christensen pulls a disappearing act for much of the time, and there is no way the rangers crush stepan by benching him… he’s an excellent two way player, and if he’s equal to christensen, which i think he’s better than EC… than Stepan gets the go over EC because he is the future and is 6 -7 years younger…
He has all of his goals in a game he helped make a blowout (he scored the 1st, 3rd and 4th goals, not the tack on ones).

It’s most obvious that Drury falls into Christensen’s spot, Stepan like it was said is the future, and currently occupies 3rd line minutes, but has been pushed into the 1st line role consistently over the last couple weeks as christensen was pretty much a non factor until gaborik reappeared… Christensen will be replaced by stepan on the top line, and drury will take steps 3rd line spot… Stepan proved he can play with frolov and gaborik, and contribute, if his pass in boston the other night is any sign, he belongs playing with top talent, and i think that will jumpstart him…
Christensen will turn into todd white… and give rests when rests are needed, and or playing when boogaard is not needed… I see gilroy and christensen being moved together at some point… maybe not for much, but it will make much needed room…
I don’t think it’s time yet to worry about prospal, because coming off a knee surgery, there is no certainty what shap he will be in…
