Rangers Analysis: A Healthy Goaltending Situation
Some questioned head coach John Tortorella's decision to start back-up goaltender Martin Biron Monday night against the Calgary Flames, but I was one of the few that applauded the move. The reason being that it creates a healthy goaltending situation for this New York Rangers team, something they have not had in quite some time. But it should be made clear that there is no controversy over who is number one for the Blueshirts; that title belongs to King Henrik and will for a long time.
Tortorella went with the hot hand in Martin Biron on Monday, as Marty was coming fresh off of a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. Lundqvist, on the other hand, had two or three disappointing performances prior to that, and the coach felt that Marty has been the more consistent goaltender as of late. So by right, Biron deserved to start that game over Lundqvist, and that is just what he did.
By having Biron to fall back on, Tortorella will force Henrik Lundqvist to play better when he goes through a slump. A competent back-up will push Lundqvist more than, say, Steve Valiquette ever did. Hank knows his job is not in jeopardy, but if he is not performing he will not play. That eliminates the notion that Henrik will be between the pipes for each big game no matter how he has played in previous tilts. That is no longer the case and it is why Lundqvist will have to begin earning his starts, he will not just be handed them anymore.
Plus, it is not like Torts is putting Biron in just to push Hank. Biron is performing, as you saw during his 31 save effort earlier in the week against the Calgary Flames. Give Marty credit because he has completely transformed since his time with the New York Islanders. Goaltending coach Benoit Allaire has brought Biron back to his usual form and we have seen that three or four times just in the past month.
Believe me, there is no tension between Lundqvist and Biron, nor is there any tension between either of the goalies and the coaches. It is a healthy situation that the Rangers have in goal, and that could potentially make the difference between playoffs or no playoffs for this hockey team. The good thing is, Henrik and Biron are both huge team players, so they will sit out if it is for the good of the club. In the end, this system is going to pay off.

Well..
“Hank knows his job is not in jeopardy, but if he is not performing he will not play.” last i checked that’s losing your job. Everyone better believe if Hank continues to play like this he will be sitting. The only thing that can help him is it’s hard to call a 6 mil dollar goalie a backup. Hank has been amazing for us in year past, but there’s somthing wrong with him. He’s been flopping a lot and I’m not talking about flops on bumps but he’s been outta place scrambling so much more than usual. I mean i love the guy to death as weird as that sounds but somethings up. Personally I don’t think biron playing well is helping hanks confidence at all. We all know he’s a competitor but he just looks on edge for the last 4 starts and verytime he let’s a goal in whether it’s the 1st goal or the 5th he’s not taking it well. I mean most goalies don’t but he’s been heated lately. The best way to get him back and confident is start him against teams like Calgary in the future and give biron the Tampa or cap starts. Because throwing Hank to the dogs and letting biron play teams under 500 is a recipe for disaster and Im sure torts will see that.

cant say i disagree.
either way.. maybe if biron keeps it up we could get some value for him at the deadline?
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Maybe the case
mabye hank is scared of sitting on the bench? Hes over thinking everything right now. the tampa game only had 20 min of good ranger hockey to bad it came 40 min to late
I honestly thought Hank played fantastic against Tampa. None of those goals were his fault except maybe the Hedman goal. If he had a team in front of him the goals against would have been much lower and we might of had a chance to win. Im excited to see how he plays against Florida, Im predicting another shutout for him.
HOPE I DONT SOUND LIKE A COMPLETE DUMMASS
i agree he played well but his play over all has been somewhat inconsistant that is not like him hes always bounced back after a bad game and i would expect nothing less in florida but my piont being in the past when he has struggled the team as struggled with him. that dosent seem to be what is happening so far. yes the overall team game in tampa was bad thats only one game if he continues to struggle even when the team game is good i think he should sit. like every fan i want the team to win im as loyal to Hank as you can get but when your not on your game 100% (as a goalie) your not gonna get too far..
Hank has gone through stretches in the past where he has not exactly been great. This year it just so happens there is someone competent to replace him. At seasons end he will have his 60 plus starts and a GAA under 2.5.
No real issue that I see.
Why trade a very good back-up who is signed for another year at the deadline? Who would fill that role next year?
