New York Rangers at Florida Panthers: Open Game Thread

The New York Rangers are desperately wanting to have a bounce back effort against the Florida Panthers tonight after they were embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday. The Rangers are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a 12-10-1 record. They have played very strong in the month of November despite a difficult schedule, and they do not want to ruin that with a string of stinkers down the stretch here. The Panthers are in thirteenth place in the Conference with a record of 9-11-0. Rangers Lineup: Dubinsky - Stepan - Gaborik Fedotenko - Boyle - Callahan Frolov - Anisimov - Prust Avery - Christensen - White Staal - Girardi Del Zotto - Eminger Sauer - Gilroy Lundqvist Biron Scratches: Derek Boogaard (sore shoulder), Michal Rozsival (shoulder strain), Chris Drury (broken finger) Henrik Lundqvist will presumably get another shot in goal tonight after he allowed five goals to the Bolts on Wednesday. Don't expect him to do much better if the defense if front of him decides to play the same careless style of hockey they did in Tampa. Four of those five goals were not Henrik's fault at all, which is why I think John Tortorella decided not to yank him in the second period of that tilt. Lundqvist will play through this, I am not too worried. The offensive lines you see above are what Torts had on the ice in practice yesterday. I like the fact that Torts is keeping Derek Stepan on the first line. The kid has been playing great and has earned that spot. Gaborik, on the other hand, needs to step up his game here and show that he is a leader on this team. He has been invisible and you can read more on that in this morning's article. Brian Boyle is second on the team in goals (10) and is being rewarded for that by centering the second line. I actually have liked the way Fedotenko and Boyle have played together and now adding Ryan Callahan to the trio will surely make them a bit more talented all together. Meanwhile, Anisimov and Frolov will drop to the third line with Brandon Prust. It was time to shake things up with those two since, as the coach said, they were becoming "stale". Scouting the Panthers: The Panthers are currently on a two game losing streak and have dropped five of their last ten. They haven't exactly been a good team so far this year, which is why they are sitting in the basement with the Devils and Islanders. They do have a winning record on home ice, however, so that could come into play this evening. Either way, this is a game that the Blueshirts have to come away with two points in. They should easily overpower this team and force them into mistakes.

Posting format is kind of weird Nick-did you post this from a mobile or something? Wall of text.

As for the lines, I like adding Dubi to the Step/Gab line as it gives that line some aggressiveness on the fore-check and especially along the boards. Hopefully it will help that so-called 1st line maintain puck possession in the offensive zone and create some scoring chances/draw some penalties.

As for the 2nd line, Feds has played much better as of the past 4-5 games so hopefully that line will work well on the fore-check, but they will probably be our new shut-down line, and they’re probably going to see Weiss/Booth all night.

That Staal/Girardi pair needs to get their shit in a pile after being repeatedly embarassed (PK or not they played piss-poor) against Tampa.

Not sure what to make of the 3rd line. AA has played well at times, but it’s really his skating that has made such an improvement this year; he needs to get back to just moving his feet and using his body, and hopefully having Prust next to him they’ll be able to work on the fore-check. Frolov, the KHL beckons.

Anisimov is playing fine, he;s like what 22?

what pisses me off is were 12-11 this season and we should have alot more wins
Frolov is a piece of crap, what a waste he was damn I though he was going to be good here to
I was wrong

again next summer the search beings yet again for a consistent goal scorer, again

First thing Rangers need to do tonight...

Make Florida aware that they’re not going to be allowed to take liberties with Lundqvist, and don’t leave bodies untouched at the top of Hank’s crease. (unlike last game vs. Tampa)
R. Malone should have been knocked on his ass repeatedly after being allowed to score that 1st goal. They let him “set up shop” down low and he took full advantage all night. It’s no secret – teams know they can rattle Hank by putting a big body or 2 in front of him and also occasionally run him, and the refs aren’t doing much to protect him.

they’re not relying on him so they’re all playing. Ladd doing very well. I guess that was a good pick up.

by Richter1994 on Nov 26, 2010 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

rich peverley is having a decent season as well. their D is solid. good move for the system no doubt.

by #17ToTheRafters on Nov 26, 2010 9:10 PM EST reply actions

Peverly has two goals tonight

Big for my BSB fantasy team.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

me too for my yahoo team :).

by Richter1994 on Nov 26, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Aside from the score, we are getting dominated.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, definitely, Hank still facing a lot of shots from <10 feet out, odd-man rushes, our fore-check is a little better but it’s still not resulting in shots, scoring chances, or drawing penalties.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

We are not dominating anything…

We are not pressing on offensive

and on defense I can’t tell when we are on the PK and when it is 5v5, it looks like we are always a man down.

Are the guys tired?

by NewburghHockey on Nov 26, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Reminds me of the Pittsburgh game-sans referees trying to hand us a loss.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

tough to say, Lundqvist is red hot tonight, not sure a better team would have cracked him more than once

by nyrangerfan521 on Nov 26, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

The Rangers look flat, no heart right now.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i’m not thrilled about tonight either…..so far…

by #17ToTheRafters on Nov 26, 2010 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

even the end of last year what does that say when you trade a player like kovy and the team gets better.

In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

calling a CBJ comeback.

we should get him a puppy

Give him some more responsibility.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

You mean pair him with MDZ?

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

I know, have to follow it around cleaning up its messes. :-)

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

lol

perfect.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Next time I get a puppy, every time it craps in the house, I’m gonna say “damnit, there’s another turnover by MDZ!”

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Give Torts a remote, every turnover zap MDZ in the balls. He’ll learn quick.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

'Yipe!!!'

Or spray him with a water bottle in the face when he comes back to the bench… wait that is for kitties isn’t it?

Rolled up newspaper over the head. Whack him.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

don’t confuse lack of heart with fatigue. this team doesn’t mail it in like last year.

by Richter1994 on Nov 26, 2010 9:19 PM EST reply actions

nah, Colorado and TB were two fast teams playing against a tired team, IMO.

by Richter1994 on Nov 26, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Colorado.

They mailed that one in. Big time.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Christ MDZ what are you doing?

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:23 PM EST reply actions

EC

Great pass. Powerplay goal. Thank God. The Powerplay needs some confidence.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:25 PM EST reply actions

Can say what we want about EC, but I think having him on the 4th line is good because he won’t spend much time as an even strength liability, and he’s got a lot of skill that he can bring to the power-play.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:27 PM EST reply actions

He belongs on the PP unit

he has a skillset that is hard to ignore. He makes great passes.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Sauer

Mean streak in him has been growing and growing. Sticks up for his teammates. I like him.

by BleedsRangerBlue on Nov 26, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

Good job by the ref. on that one. We haven’t said that at all this year, but he did a good job on that play.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions

Replay showed

Nothing there. No penalty. Good pressure by the D

In Hank we trust.

Finally, he’s deserved a goal, great shot.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:44 PM EST reply actions

Nice to see Sauer flatten that guy by the crease. Just needs to not flatten him into Hank.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:49 PM EST reply actions

very impressed with Sauer. he’s a keeper.

by Richter1994 on Nov 26, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Empty net

What the hell

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:50 PM EST reply actions

what do they have to lose?

by #17ToTheRafters on Nov 26, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Good point

Not like their PP does much though. The man advantage doesn’t seem to help them out. The game is much closer than the score suggests.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

Great shift, our guys were completely gassed.

by Caerid112 on Nov 26, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions

lmao good call

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

I have a few important fantasy guys playing in that game

I have to choose between Kesler and Pavelski… I am going with Pavelski. He is magic.

In Hank we trust.

by Dig Deep on Nov 26, 2010 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

i got 4 players in the game

Thornton,Couture, Ehrhoff, Edler

hoping for a high scoring game. :)

by #17ToTheRafters on Nov 26, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I got those players minus Erhoff

Petr Prucha sent to the AHL

I feel bad for Prucha, he was my favorite Ranger for a year or two, but he really has shown that he isn’t a goal scorer. I was thinking of players who had a huge season and then imploded and couldn’t think of a better example than Cheechoo in recent memory. Rocket Richard Trophy to AHL to try-out for the Stars (didn’t make the team).
