Rangers Recap: Rangers Overcome Predators, 2-1 in the SO

NASHVILLE TN - NOVEMBER 27: Ryan Callahan #24 Erik Christensen #26 and Dan Girardi #5 of the New York Rangers celebrate with teammates after scoring a goal against the Nashville Predators on November 27 2010 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville Tennessee. (Photo by Frederick Breedon/Getty Images)

I said in my pregame notes that the New York Rangers would have to fight for what they wanted to accomplish tonight against the Nashville Predators. Well, they sure fought in this game to come back and defeat the Preds, 2-1, in their first shootout of the season. This contest had a little bit of everything in it, and even though it took quite some time for the Blueshirts to come alive, it was entertaining to watch. The Rangers may have not played their best hockey the past two nights, but they will take the back-to-back wins anyway.

The first period started off extremely slow, which was sort of expected since both teams played last night and needed to get a feel for each other being that they only faceoff once or twice a year. Nashville got on the board first when Dan Girardi could not control a bouncing puck in the slot and turned it over to Colin Wilson, who ripped a shot over Henrik Lundqvist. Shortly after, Sean Avery and Jordan Tootoo mixed it up in the faceoff circle and both were sent off for roughing. But once their penalties expired, they met up and agreed to drop the gloves. Tootoo demolished Avery in the fight (what in the world was that little celebratory dance he did?), but I felt that it sparked the Rangers a bit, since they clearly did not have their legs early in the game.

That was not the end of the fisticuffs. Brandon Prust would later have a go with Shane O'Brien behind Pekka Rinne's net in what was a scrap that was more evenly fought than the one between Avery and Tootoo. After the buzzer sounded, Brandon Dubinsky put Colin Wilson on his behind, which started a brief scrum before the teams departed to their respective locker rooms.

Missed opportunities were the story of the second stanza for the Rangers. They outshot their opponent, 7-5, in the period but could not get any of those seven shots past Rinne. This included a wide open net for Erik Christensen, which he managed to miss and shoot right into the goaltender despite having all the time in the world. Alexander Frolov shot wide on a one-timer set up by Derek Stepan that definitely would have been a goal if it was on net.  And Michael Del Zotto also had a great opportunity in the slot, but fired into the shin pad of a defender instead of on net. It was getting really frustrating for the players and fans alike.

Star-divide

Thanks to the Good Lord for allowing Ryan Callahan to finally break the ice with just over six minutes remaining in the third, scoring to tie the game at one.  I think head coach John Tortorella would have pulled the bench out of the ground and flipped it over if the Rangers did not somehow find a way to tie that game with all of the chances they had. But once again, Callahan and Dubinsky (picked up an assist on the goal) came to the rescue.

To over time we went, where there would not be a single stoppage of play. Each team only had one shot on goal in the extra period, but the Blueshirts seemed to control the puck for a majority of the five minutes. I thought the defense on both ends was rock solid, which was probably why this one had to ultimately be decided in a shootout.

Eric Christensen, the first shooter, scored for New York with a sweet series of dekes to beat Rinne. Henrik Lundqvist then stepped in and stopped all three shooters he faced, clinching the 2-1 win for the Rangers. A feeling of relief fell upon the entire bench when Hank made that last save, because they knew this was a game they needed to win.

Henrik Lundvist was once again a major part of tonight's win. Coming off a shutout against the Panthers on Friday, we expected him to continue his dominance against the Preds. That he did, making a total of 30 saves (10 less than last night) and standing strong in the shootout. He has bounced back nicely after the rough patch of games that he ran into over the past few weeks, which is definitely a good sign for the Blueshirts.

We have seen it over and over again this season, and we saw it yet again on this night. With Marian Gaborik out of the lineup, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky took it upon themselves to step up and carry the offense on their shoulders. Callahan had the tying tally and was incredible on the penalty-kill, while Dubinsky's not-stop effort was probably why the Rangers were even able to win this game. You cannot praise these two enough, because they are giving the impression that nothing can go wrong for them right now.

Derek Stepan's six game point streak may have been snapped, but he was certainly noticeable against the Predators anyway. I wasn't kidding when I bragged about his ability to distribute the puck on the rush and while set up in the offensive zone. The kid has bird vision. He will become a top playmaker in the league over time, just watch.

A lot of people hate on Erik Christensen for multiple reasons - including myself - but his arsenal of shootout moves is outstanding. I have never ever seen him do the same move twice. Ever. No matter who is in net, it is almost impossible to outwait all of those moves leading up to the actual shot. You really cannot blame Rinne on the winner, because he had no chance to save it.

The defense in front of Henrik Lundqvist was much better tonight than in recent games. For the most part, they kept the Predators to the outside, which was not an easy task considering how often they have defensemen join in on the rush.

The Rangers now enter a weirdly scheduled week in which they will host the red hot Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, have two days off, and then enter a home-and-home with the rival Islanders on Thursday and Friday. All in all, that's a total of six points that they can steal from teams within their division. If they can capture at least four of them I will be satisfied.

Haven't even read the recap

But was anyone else looking for Boyle to get a chance in the SO?

Maybe over Step or Cally….EC’s specialty is shootouts though, you can expect him in every one.

agreed on EC even more so since he had his A game 2nite

In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by BL3ACH on Nov 28, 2010 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

EC is a given, then it’s the hot hand for that game.

Dubi and Cally were playing better than Boyle.

by NTB on Nov 28, 2010 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

I agree on Dubi

Cally did have the goal, but that was more the result of Dubi’s hardwork and a bit of luck. I like Cally’s game, but he’s not the first guy I think about in a breakaway situation. I would have rather seen Dubi in that spot, but I’m not sweating it too much.

If it comes to using Boyle, I wouldn’t think it’s so much how he was playing that game, but how he’s been converting the opportunites he’s had. Alot of his goals have been coming on the rush, and he seems to have his wrister pretty dialed in.

by BuckarooClub on Nov 28, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I also felt Boyle should have been given a chance. Cally really isnt a shootout player to me, although he scored on that one penalty shot earlier this year correct? I just remember Cally getting breakaways on the pk where he does all the work but doesnt have that finish.

We played a good game though, it was a little slow through parts of it and the second period was frustrating with all the missed chances. Solid 2 points though, and I dont mind taking people in the western conference into ot that point we gave them wont affect our ranking

by Pballer505 on Nov 28, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

Callahan did score on his penalty shot earlier this year so maybe that factored into the decision too.

by EricBrat20 on Nov 29, 2010 8:18 AM EST up reply actions

I thought the same thing but then I remembered how tired he looked at the end of the game. That would be my guess why he didn’t get the chance.

In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by BL3ACH on Nov 28, 2010 1:36 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

that using Stepan in the shootout was a strange choice. After the game he had I was surprised to see Christensen out there leading off as well, but it worked.

Dubinsky may have been too tired after his mammoth game to do anything else. He looked utterly wiped after OT finished, he played great last night.

ec had his one of his best games of the season I thought.

In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by BL3ACH on Nov 28, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

yep, I thought he’d be the third shooter in the shootout instead of going first.

Prole art threat.

by greifi griffie on Nov 28, 2010 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

and of course going 3rd in the shootout should be called “batting Jokinen”……in honor of Torts’ mysterious use of Olli as the last shooter in the season-ending loss to Philly last year (while Gaborik sat unused, of course).

Prole art threat.

by greifi griffie on Nov 28, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Gaborik’s career shootout stats are horrible… he doesn’t really have “moves”, he pretty much relies on sniping a corner, even in the shootout :\

by Kritikal on Nov 28, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

o okay I thought you meant EC didn’t deserve to be a shooter based n his play I misunderstood you.

In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

by BL3ACH on Nov 28, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I definatly expected EC

Dubi has always put out a good effort in the SO, and the way he’s been scoring this season, I thought he might have gotten the nod. Boyle would have been great to see too, just because he’s 120% offense lately.

by BuckarooClub on Nov 28, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Boyle’s been shooting at around ~20% this season, last season he was somewhere around 5%… If he keeps up this pace, goddamn, LA got robbed blind.

by Kritikal on Nov 28, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

And to think all the genius fan GM’s were ready to demote him before the season to let unaccomplished prospects like grachev play.

ugly win but it counts just he same.

by mike1967 on Nov 28, 2010 12:28 AM EST reply actions

Good performances

From Hank, Dubinsky, Callahan, and Avery (for the first two periods of play, at least).

Good to see the team win a shootout, I’d like to avoid the things altogether and win in regulation or in OT but I am glad that the Rangers clawed themselves back into the game against a pretty stingy team and took the two points.

Side Note: Made the Girardi All-Star poster (and the Gaborik All-Star poster).

In Hank we trust.

Also

Thought Rozi was okay in his first game back, he wasn’t remarkable but he played well in his own end. Anyone know how many minutes of ice he got?

22:22 TOI. Good chunk of time.

Real impressive stat is Dubinsky’s TOI (as mleetch352 pointed out in the game thread) 25:54.

I agree that Gilroy is going to find himself without a seat when the music stops.

I made the Girardi poster but I just realized I want a picture of him when he got that cut on the bridge of his nose… I can’t seem to find one. Does anyone remember the game or have a link to a picture of that?

first team that managed sustained pressure when he was on ice, he is so good at taking away the puck (poke check or pinning on the boards). They obviously scouted well they threw and chased and it was effective because Sauer challenges so high.

by Kmp on Nov 28, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

I find it incredible that we now have more points than any Western Conference team with the exception of Detroit.
For the most part, we have beaten the teams that we should beat. On the flip side, our record against top 8 teams is bad and a few of those games were not really close.
Gotta just keep piling up points, but sooner or later Torts and the coaching staff are going to have to come up with a better game plan against teams that can skate and play aggressive D like Philly, Colorado, etc.

This team is definitely mentally tougher than last year.

by Joe1969 on Nov 28, 2010 2:50 AM EST reply actions

We’ve also played like 3 or 4 more games than a lot of those teams. Not trying to rain on your parade but it’s just the truth. But yeah we need to play better against good teams. Obviously it’s tough to beat those teams but it’s not impossible we just need to work hard on it and hopefully next time we get the opportunity we can get it done.

by EricBrat20 on Nov 28, 2010 3:48 AM EST up reply actions

were getting a chance on monday as Pitt is really really hot and I think they have won almost every game after we beat them so monday is going to be a real test.

by CrazyRangerFan on Nov 28, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

Not only mentally tougher but physically tougher also. This team is as tough as they come.

4 out of 5

amazing how we win 4 games out of 5 and get beaten so badly in the one loss but looked great in the 4 other games
honestly im not expecting us to beat the Penguins idk we always seem to have trouble with them
but imo we should win 4 out of our next 5 again
Islanders Islanders Senators Senators should be wins, we are so much better than those teams
back on track good job, gotta keep beating teams we should beat

If this were last year’s team they would have mailed it in and turned in a disaster performance. Instead, they hang in and battle and get a positive result despite a brutal Nov schedule. I love this team. Welcome back King.

by Richter1994 on Nov 28, 2010 7:07 AM EST reply actions

agreed – in fact, it’s this difference in battle level that’s allowed them to avoid some losing streaks so far, which would have likely existed by this time last year.

I love the fact that we are a hardnosed in your face team led by Dubi and Cally. They are the heart and soul of this team and even sweeter is they are OUR homegrown players.

by Kritikal on Nov 28, 2010 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Sauer, and Eminger.

I think they’ve made a big difference in our team toughness, especially on the back end. Sauer doesn’t take any crap at all. Oh and Prust. I can not believe Calgary let him go..for what? Higgins? lol

Rangers FTW!

Frolov

I don’t know if it was the lack of Gaborik but I thought Frolov looked terrible out there, I can’t believe he was a two time 30 goal scorer. Overall I thought there were times the Rangers dominated the game and other times where they looked completely flat. I’m glad they won, this may have been game they would of lost in the past, Pittsburgh will be a real test on Monday.

Also I cant believe Rhinne took two delay of game penalties for playing the puck outside of the trapezoid, I hadn’t seen that called in a couple years let alone twice in the same period.

by R.C.Belangies on Nov 28, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

FroLoaf stinks, plain and simple. Everyone wondering where MZA fits in the line-up? Well, here you are. Play the best players, not the highest contracts.

by Richter1994 on Nov 28, 2010 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I like MZA before we even signed him, and I would love to see him back on the Rangers
that guy has alot of talent despite his size
would much rather play him the Frolov
Frolov looks big fat and slow

by Archie Barberio on Nov 28, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

he looks awful every game

I cant believe too that at one time this guy could actually score goals, a 30 goal player
amazing how in a contract year how bad he is, seriously he is playing like a 4th line player AT BEST
he is KHL bound, they enjoy their Russians so enjoy KHL
Frolov is a bum, I would love to trade for someone before the trade deadline because lets face it we need another winger because this guy just isnt it
especially since we should be in the playoffs and this guy is not going to help us win any games
back again to the free agency looking for a scorer yet again this offseason
im shocked at how bad this bum is

by Archie Barberio on Nov 28, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

I was ok with this signing for one year at a reasonable amount but FroLoaf has nothing left. I finally got to see his “wrist shot” against Calgary and I could have stopped it. Nothing on it at all. I guess that’s why the Kings didn’t re-sign him. Let MZA take his spot.

by Richter1994 on Nov 28, 2010 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

yeah I was happy we signed him to for a one year deal

but the guy sucks
Id rather see what MZA can do a few games and scratch Foolov

by Archie Barberio on Nov 28, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

I agree 100%. Bring the kid up and see what he can do. We need more scoring depth. Plus he’ll bring some speed into their game.

by Richter1994 on Nov 28, 2010 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Jeremy Williams has more goals and more points

he has EARNED a shot more than anyone else, plus plays the same style as dubi and cally.

You don’t bench professionals in order to give a prospect a shot just to see what they can do. They have to earn it. MZA has played well of late, but although alex friggins has played like shit, he is still on pace to net 20.

by GAThingy on Nov 29, 2010 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

I'd like to see

FreeLove as a healthy scratch. He hits less frequently then Malik.

If I could put my finger on the disdain for EC, it’s that his brilliant flashes never seem to amount to anything. Nothing. It’s kind of creepy when you watch him. Contrast him with Stepan, whose skills and efforts always seem to lead to a scoring chance, a breakout, a keep-in while cycling.

Tootoo’s little post-fight salute? You won the fight, but one good punch and two big shots to the back of Avery’s helmet hardly qualifies for a victory lap. Fail.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

by SimpleManiac on Nov 28, 2010 5:16 PM EST reply actions

I would love to see Frobum as a healthy scratch too

EC idk I still dont like his personality or character I still dont like his game but man he is sick in shootouts I gotta admit the guy is awesome in that aspect
if he could be consistent and not come across as such a snob I think he would come out of my doghouse

Tootoo is a flamer, I mean Avery lost the fight but I dont think Tootoo beat the living snot out of him he won yeah Avery got 2 good shots in and he didnt knock Avery out, but the funny thing is the Rangers got way more out of that fight then the Predators got out of it
Ballerina or whatever his name is Tootoo god thats a flamer name anyway he got to skate around with a peace sign wtf meanwhile the Rangers got serious motivation and momentum from that fight
Avery wins imo, Prust always wins and Dubinsky just flat out dropped that one guy at the horn

by Archie Barberio on Nov 28, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

the king is back

2 great back to back wins for the king not a bad road trip except for the tampa meltdown they pulled out a gritty hard fought win cant wait for monday nights game against sid the bitch and the pens go nrangers .
