Rangers Recap: Brandon Dubinsky's Deuce Smokes Devils
The Rangers were outplayed by the New Jersey Devils on this night, but capitalized on key opportunities to lead them past their division rivals, 3-0. It was exactly what the team wanted after taking a beating the night before in Philadelphia, especially Henrik Lundqvist, who wanted to come out and redeem himself after allowing four to the Flyers. At the end of the day, they got the job done and came away with two points - can’t ask for anything more than that.
In my opinion, the Blueshirts were fortunate to come out of the first period with a 1-0 advantage. They were outshot by the Devils 11-4 and clearly were not the better hockey club. However, 7:35 into the tilt, Brandon Dubinksy whacked an Artem Anisimov pass through goaltender Johan Hedberg for his ninth of the season. That would stand as the only goal in the period with King Henrik looking dominant in net. It is pretty easy to pick up when Hank is on, and tonight was one of those times.
The Rangers cleaned their game up in the second period and were generating more offense against Hedberg. The "Moose" played awfully well also, because the Rangers had trouble getting straight up shots past him. It took a Brian Boyle deflection with 36 seconds remaining in the second to gain a 2-0 lead, which turned out to be a back-breaker for New Jersey. Dan Girardi had the original shot from the point for his fifth assist of the season.
The Rangers wasted no time putting an end to the contest in the third as Dubinsky buried his second of the game off a lucky bounce that he tucked into the back of the net just 3:41 in. From that point on, Lundqvist took over and stole the show. His stop on Travis Zajac’s one-timer was probably the best of the game, but he also had some key saves against Volchenkov and Tallinder as well. Without him, I am not so sure that this one would have ended in regulation, because the Devils really started applying the pressure late in the third.
Toss-up between Dubinksy and Lundqvist for player of the game, but I am going to go with Hank here. It is never easy to play back-to-back road games in two straight nights, let alone when facing 30+ shots in both. He was perfect with 33 saves this evening and re-gained his confidence after that disaster in Philadelphia. It just goes to show how mentally talented Lundqvist is, in addition to physically talented. The guy can do it all.
And now obviously Dubi was the next best performer in white. His two goals were his ninth and tenth on the season; fourth and fifth this week. This is the best I have ever seen the youngster play, and it is certainly the most consistent he has ever been in his entire NHL career. If he can continue to do this when Gaborik and company return to the lineup in a few weeks or so, the Rangers will have a spectacular secondary scorer on their hands. But right now, "secondary scorer" may be undervaluing him, because with Gaborik out he has been the team’s primary scorer along with Ryan Callahan (did not play tonight).
Marc Staal and Dan Girardi looked better out there compared to the garbage we saw just over 24 hours ago. They were clearing the crease and preventing any second opportunities for the Devils around the net. I thought they were especially clutch in the third when Jersey was attempting to form some kind of comeback.
Now I know this is supposed to be postgame analysis from a Rangers’ perspective, but I just wanted to give Stephen Gionta (yes, the brother of Brian) a plug. In his NHL debut, I thought he was one of the biggest threats to the Blueshirts all game long. The kid had four shots on goal in just over eleven minutes of ice time, and each shift he was out there he made sure he was doing something to be noticed. I was impressed by his play, but like his brother, he is on the shorter side.
Anyway, the Rangers did not play a perfect game at the Prudential Center, but it was a good enough road effort in the second of back-to-back games in two straight nights for the victory. It seemed like they came together as a team and did everything as a unit. Their forecheck, their defense, it was all unified. Apparently head coach John Tortorella was very pleased with this, because he had a big grin on his face at the end of the game, which is a rare occurrence.
Their next game will be Sunday night at Madison Square Garden versus the St. Louis Blues.

how bout some props for boyle?
In preseason many were saying there was no spot for him on the team. He is 2nd on the team with 5 goals and has been consistant all year and is a much more physical presence than last year.
Very happy to see significant improvements not just from boyle but cally, dubi, AA, MDZ, and Girardi as well.

oh yeah brian danny boyle as emerick likes to call him has been really impressive both ES and on the PK. along with feds and avery that have been working just as hard without the points to show for it. really solid top 3 lines when gabby comes back…

Yeah I think Chico called him Danny a few times. (It was painful to listen to them all game long, I had to switch over to the crappy channel a few times just to take a break from them). Boyles playing very well which not many of us here expected. He deserves alot of credit

Nice Recap
I know its still early but Dubi is tied with Stamkos for the league lead in Goals. Who would have thought? He’s not only scoring but playing a very three-dimensional game out there.
Boyle has been simply marvelous. Glad to see Staal rebound. We need him.
d
I also liked what I saw out of Anisimov on both sides of the puck.
I thought Stepan looked pretty good, but why did he pass up on a shot twice to pass off to – first Eminger and then Sauer?! Have they told him not to shoot? I hope his confidence is OK after cooling off. I have faith in his abilities and am glad he is still with the big club.
I thought this was a great game despite the Rangers getting outworked through most of the game. The defense didn’t make any glaring mistakes, the offense got a decent amount of chances and capitalized when it counted. Dubinsky’s shorthanded goal was a thing of beauty. All the usual players were noticeable out there, even MDZ looked good on the defensive end. Anisimov did a really good job shadowing Kovy when he was out there against him, prevented him from creating scoring chances left and right. Lundqvist came through with some big saves when it counted, shaking off the softie he let in last night at Philly.
Overall, a good win against a struggling, but deceptive team who have been battered down by injuries and Kovy’s contract. Glad we beat Hedburg, who typically has our number, though Lundqvist has the Devils’ number as well, so that was a wash.

I also love how the Devils’ fans are asking for MacLean’s head already… don’t they realize their team isn’t gonna win games when almost half the team are AHL callups? They won’t start winning til their injured players get better, or find some kind of cohesion.
I love even more how much they gave up for Kovalchuk’s non-production. They lost a couple good players in the trade, 100 mil, they were fined, and all for a bunch of one-on-one stickhandling plays that don’t pan out. I love it.
not only were they fined they lost like 3 first round picks as well
by CrazyRangerFan on Nov 6, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, 2 1st round picks (one to ATL, one stripped via fine), a 3rd round pick (via fine), and $3,000,000 (fine). Boy, am I glad we were nowhere near this mess at the deadline.
Reminds me of the Ranges in the past. Trading young talents for players with a big name that don’t deliver.
honestly
Sather has made his mistakes, but he’s been great post-lockout. If he keeps having off-seasons like this past one I don’t care how long he stays.

great post-lockout?
redden, gomez, drury, kotalik?
far from great. he’s been average to kinda bad post lockout. he’s had minimal success via free agency, and the solid drafting of late can be accredited to gordie and his staff. i still say the sooner the better in terms of sather leaving.
LETS GO RANGERS

We also need to consider what was available on the market. I think he always saw these guys as stop-gap until this current crop of youth materialized which is why we see all of those contracts expiring (or would have expired) right about now. Redden was a gamble, for sure. But he had shown success in the past even though his numbers were starting to slide. I remember watching Redden with Ottawa and he was a completely different player than the one that laced up on 33rd street. Drury and Gomez were brought in to offer a stable, hard-working veteran core to keep the club grinding, playing solid, team oriented hockey. I don’t think Sather was under any illusion that we were going to win a cup during these years. In short, things are coming along nicely, right according to plan.
Hail to the King
When Hank is on his game, he is unbeatable. Fortunately he is on his game most of the time. I do not know whether the Rangers will make the playoffs, but there is a lot to like about this team. Some of our key youngsters have definitely improved their game this season. Dubi has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, but this year he has been more consistent. Brian Boyle has been a very pleasant surprise in all aspects of his game. He is looking like a keeper. I really cannot understand why Calgary let Prust go. He has proved to be a great addition to the team. I would not have believed that the team would play so well in the absence of Gabby, dru and Vinnie. If only the defense would play well on a consistent basis and Frolov would emerge from his funk.
First Line Question
When Gabby gets back; who would you pair him up with? and would that line get first line minutes?
Gabby is a LW or RW?
Gabby is a RW
so figure Frolov-Christensen-Gabby

maybe dubi and artie if the x-ensen/fro option fails. that pack line can do with someone else at RW. it worked well last night.

Callahan complements that line perfectly, though… you could possibly squeeze Prospal in there, maybe Boyle or Drury as a last resort. I would love to see MZA or Grachev get a shot on that line, though
i’ve been happy with grachev, he seems to be highly developed as a 2-way forward for his age.

What is up with Frolov? I mean he really looked commanding at times during the run up to the season. I really don’t get it. Stepan’s adjustment I can perfectly understand…but Frolov? What were the complaints about him coming from LA?
The problem with Frolov
if you can even really call it a problem, was his lack of PP time due to the Kings forcing him to become a better two way player.
I actually don’t think that he is lazy, per say, he just kinda floats around the offensive zone. I think that when Gaborik comes back, we are going to see a MUCH better Frolov. Because as it stands now, the opposing teams are kind of shadowing him when he is on the ice.
But we’ll have to wait and see.

He’s not going to look like Callahan, Prust, or Boyle on the ice, and people expecting that level of care aren’t going to get it.
The only really curious thing is the 19 shots in 13 games. That must improve.

I think Frolov misses Gaborik. Frolov is a guy that is going to score most of his goals from 10 feet away. Frolov needs linemates that can lug the puck and draw attention away from him so he can bang in rebounds and redirections. He will be fine, eventually.
The idea of having a Frolov-Gaborik line and then the “Homegrown Line” as the top two scoring lines puts a big smile on my face.
This makes sense. If the past is any indication, at some point during the year he’ll probably go on a tear and help lift the club through one or more stretches in the schedule. But if he doesn’t start shooting he won’t make the 20 goal mark.
I came in with real high hopes with Frolov. I think a lot of us did, if you all remember the first goal he had in preseason against fatso was pretty excellent. Since that shift, he appears a bit slow. I hope y’all are right about him picking up. One thing I do question is his insistence on going for a wrap around 2/3 the time he is behind the net. Granted sometimes there isn’t a play to be made but the whole Einstein thing about doing the same thing and expecting different results isn’t working for him.
you guys see...
thorton get a 2 game suspension for his hit on perron…this hit was shoulder on head from a guy who normally doesn’t dish out dirty hits…but when it came to carcillo’s (dirty ass player) jumping elbow to fedatenko’s face theres no penalty or suspension….what a joke
Let it go
I have more of a problem with the officials not calling a penalty on the play during the game (at least a 2 min. charge). Clarkson hit on Boyle was called a 5 min boarding major, which is the appropriate call. Clarkson doesn’t want to take a 5 min. penalty there or injure Boyle, but Clarkson caught Boyle from behind and the refs made the right call. The Rangers benefited from the call in that moment to help us win the game. I could care less if he’s suspended now, because the officials made the right call on the ice. Carcillo being suspended now does nothing for us.
It might not do anything for us but I agree with nutz_35, it may be a deterrent for him to not do it again, to turn the other cheek is like ignorance is bliss because we won. Whether we won or not has nothing to do with an illegal hit on the ice.

I’m glad the Rangers won, but if they play the same way against the Blues, they will not be on the winning end.

this is what we expected.
he is really on a hot streak i always bashed dubi saying he was no better then a 20 to 25 goal scorer barring any injury,s he could look at a30 to 35 season thats not bad at all .
lohaus #54
me too
I always kinda got on Dubinsky for not being consistent and a goal scorer, which honestly he wasnt
he was always inconsistent
sometimes well most cases with young players it takes time, he isnt Stamkos or Crosby, he is Brandon Dubinsky, i think sometimes as Ranger fans we expected Dubinsky to be this huge scoring threat
the kid finally matured and is putting it all together
really glad he is going to have a breakout season, just wish we had him locked up long term because after what happened to him last time contract time, im sure he has some beef there and actually has leverage now
either way Dubinsky and Callahan really make me proud because these are OUR players, we took the time to develop them
thats why I love this homegrown line with another homegrown player Anisimov
if Stepan continues this mold, then we def have the right scouts and personel in our player development and thats a great sign to me long term
