Goals By Skyscrapers Not Enough, Caps Defeat Rangers 5-3
It seems terribly unfair that the Rangers lose on a night when Derek Boogaard scores his first goal since before the invention of Twitter, but if you are a Rangers fan, you know full well that life isn't always fair.
A pair of goals by Brian Boyle and a slapshot blast by Boogaard weren't enough as the Rangers dropped another game on home ice, losing 5-3 to the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden.
Boyle got the Rangers on the board early, but every time the Rangers took the lead, the Caps had an answer, but eventually the Caps had all the answers, and the Rangers just had questions.
With Henrik Lundqvist on the bench for the extra attacker, Brooks Laich found the empty net for his second goal of the game, and the Rangers were finished.
John Erskine, Mike Knuble, and Matt Hendricks were the other goal scorers for Washington.
The Rangers will take another shot at winning on home ice when they take on the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night at MSG.
Final Thoughts:
- It seems redundant and sour to always complain about the officiating, but it was pretty bad in this game. The goal that Ruslan Fedetenko had waved off should have counted.
- The Rangers have got to stop just dumping the puck when they have the goaltender pulled, or at least do it when you have somebody headed for it. Too many times the last two games they've dumped the puck, had no one in the zone, and it led to an easy clear for the defense.
- All in all I can't really complain too much about the way the Rangers played. Couple of errors here and there, the Caps just have too much firepower to keep up with.
- Sinus infections suck, just sayin.

Also sucks...
that they lose despite Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin and Green combining for 0 goals… this year is (once again) shaping up as a year-long struggle for 8th in the conference…
As expected though. Whether they will admit it or not, its about the future.

Once again I have to question the refs thinking. You give a bogus penalty to the Rangers in the 1st period a-la The bogus trip call on Callahan where the stick never touches the Rangers opponent. John Carlson lost an edge and fell down all on his own. That allows the Caps to score on the power play.
And as you called it Jim the Fedotenko goal should’ve counted, because the defender rode Fedotenko into his goalie. The Rangers can lose a game all by themselves without the help from the refs. Once again the refs hand the Rangers a loss. This guy deserved a tally and we can talk about possible O.T.
I have to say that this was the first game where the Caps won, Ovechkin didn’t score. Good job by the Rangers to stop him, but sadly not enough to earn a point. Gaborik will be back soon.

I'm not saying the refs were good, but...
The benefit of hindsight and replay is wonderful.
At full speed, it looks like a trip on Carlson. As for the goalie interference, it rarely matters if the D-man pushes you in (it should, but never seems to matter) and that unfortunately has been pretty consistent over the last couple of years
it looks like a trip on Carlson. Shouldn’t make that call if you’re not sure. Wasn’t it the trailing ref that called it, and was about 100 feet away from the play?
C’mon on now. You’re getting a little silly. Many penalties are called b/c they look like something. It’s a fast game where you only have seconds to react. Mistakes will be made. It’s not like baseball where they could go to computerized systems for balls and strikes and foul balls and never have mistakes.
Also, I have no idea which ref called it, but when the play happened, I said, “shit, tripping penalty”. And I’m guessing many others did too.
I don’t know about “silly,” I’m just a proponent of letting the players play. Honestly, I have no idea what the hell constitutes a penalty anymore, and apparently neither do the refs. I’m not a fan of calling infractions just because they “look” like penalties, that goes for every team, not just the Rangers. I understand it’s difficult to tell due to the speed of the game and the fact that so much is going on at the same time. Officiating cannot be an easy job. (Anyway I am fairly certain it was the far ref that called the phantom “trip”)
By the way, I’m still waiting for Carcillo to get penalized for the elbow to Fedotenko’s head. I guess that didn’t look like “something!”
But no one has complained about a very similar call in our favor in the opposite corner. As usual we couldn’t capitalize. It worked for us and against us. Officiating is not the reason this team is 7-7.
I agree officiating sucks. Seems like every game there are bs calls. But can’t pin the loss on the refs. We had a long 5 on 3 and could do nothing with it.
This team is what it is. A .500 team who will fight for the 8th spot.

Man do we need guys that can finish.
The effort is there and the D is improving, but just too goddamn limited and uncreative offensively. The refs don’t help, but Fedotenko, Frolov, and others have to hit the net more. You can see them freeze up sometimes when there’s a scoring chance.
At least I was there
To witness the Boog goal. Our row’s initial reaction was to start laughing. Too bad there aren’t any Caps fans around us to taunt about their goalie letting up a goal to NHL’s goal drought king.

STAAL = SPADES ARE STILL SPADES
On the SHG, when Girardi, made it a strpng side triangle, he has to move over.
On the Ovi assist, play the body. If you play the body on Ovi, and he passes, no matter who he passes too, they are not as good as him. Pressure should be ASAP, don’t chase
LOL, you think Carolina would trade back Bobby Sangs for a chance to unite 2 of the 3 Staals?

Just because they aren't Ovi
Doesn’t mean they’re not good. Lunging at a guy on the PP won’t usually result in anything favorable for the PK unless you happen to separate the guy from the puck and gain possession.

Just to make sure I got this…on the 2nd goal, you want Staal to force a pass, which he does, but because he didn’t hit him into forcing the pass, it’s not a good enough result?

Staal really needs to.....................stop being so inconsistent
I mean the ginger has alot of skills and is young but every year its the same BS with this guy
we all drool over him and he even scores a sick breakaway goal and we love him or he is doing great in his own end we love him but then nights he is a ghost or makes some bonehead defensive play, he is good for a FEW of those when he is not on that night
he just needs to step it the f up and start being consistent

guys I think we Need Defensive coach Somebody like Dave Maloney to teach younger players how to do things NHL way of hockey, and trade for a physical D-man we have to many 3rd liners, make a package with Rosi or Emenger
by nyr121 on Nov 10, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
It was the 3rd goal, not the second
Ovi brings the puck up ice, and into the zone. Staal is already looking to make a play with his stick – which he has WAY too far out in front. He should have looked to get Ovi FURTHER outside. Staal needs to get his feet moving quicker, so he take the lane to the net away completely, and force Ovi to the outside. Staal had Dubi and Prust coming back (both of whom should have been picking up Knuble) if Ovi beat him when he played the body, but honestly Staal needs to step up and be able to make the physical play there. Lunging and flailing isn’t defense.
by BuckarooClub on Nov 10, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions
On Knuble’s goal? Umm…AO was to the outside? The Rangers D in front of the net was just too deep to get the puck, I think.
by red army line on Nov 10, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions
He was outside and alone
Because Staal tried to lunge at him. Staal wound up going to the ice, AO skated around his stick, untouched, and made the pass into the slot.
I’d agree that Dubi or Prust should have been looking for trailers, and I said that above, but Staal still needs to make a play there. If AO is too strong, and Staal can’t physically hit him, I’m saying Staal needs to atleast use his body to keep AO outside, and stay with him – forcing AO to move it behind the net or drop it up to the point.
If Staals the guy I read about on here, then yeah, I expect him to be able to step up and lay a hit on AO – that was the time and place to do it. I’ve said before, i don’t think Marc Staal has gotten his feet and body to where it should be to make that physical play, but I atleast want to see him get in Ovi’s path, and slow him down til help arrives. The poke check was NOT the play to make – espically when it’s not even a well executed poke check.
by BuckarooClub on Nov 10, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions
“If Staals the guy I read about on here, then yeah, I expect him to be able to step up and lay a hit on AO – that was the time and place to do it.”
Buck, they’ll just keep telling you how young he is and how crazy you are. Ovi isn’t exactly an old man. I think people just like his last name.
Anyway, Staal and MDZ on the same club just doesn’t work. At all. People are talking about trading Rozi and Eminger but I think they have it dead wrong. Keep em both or trade them both or whatever, but they are middle men (Rozi, by the way, is far stronger then Eminger and playing much better than either Staal or MDZ IMHO) you can swap middle men all day long without changing the fundamental composition of the defense.
Even though the points made about Staal here are true I think he ultimately fits better for a hard grinding and strong d-unit. If we can get value for him – not lose him along with key prospects or drop any more than 3 or 4 years in age — I argue we should trade MDZ. There must be a GM out there with an underscoring club but a solid group of defensive minded guys. I don’t study the rest of the league enough to know this for a fact, but I know that someone could be enticed by an exciting to watch offensive D-man like MDZ.
I’d rather construct a team able to win the cup. It won’t happen unless we develop an Iron blue-line. One reason that Redden’s game sucked in NYC is that the league changed. At times Ottawa looked spectacular with Redden for a number of years but they didn’t win a cup. Honestly, correct me if I’m wrong, but when was the last team to win a cup with a defensive unit led by a player like MDZ? Perhaps Dallas with Zubov? The Rangers with Leetch?
Keep Staal and see how he progresses. But the sad truth is that he and MDZ consistently give attackers the middle lane or fail to keep up with the outside move. Every single F’n game its the same story.
MDZ does add a few points and creates opportunities. He’s good at the long breakout pass and sometimes pinches well on the attack to create an opportunity in the high slot but these don’t compensate for his turnovers and positioning.
But the sad truth is that he and MDZ consistently give attackers the middle lane or fail to keep up with the outside move
Staal rarely gives up the middle. No argument on the outside…it’s happened alot thus far this season.
He has started quite slow this year. His mistakes this year have been monster mistakes, no arguments. Maybe it’s the contract, maybe it’s the letter, maybe he’s trying to do too much for other reasons. I have no clue.
He’s still a year removed from having one of the top defensive seasons among the d-men in the league last year. That ability didn’t vanish. He’ll be fine.

Okay...
I’ll hand it to you Smurf because I sure don’t have a break-down on Staal’s move to the inside or outside…I’m just noting my impressions. Sometimes that can be warped by a bad play or two that marks a player. I’ll start watching for it…
But MDZ sure does abandon the lane to the attacker far too quickly.
Not to mention he started pretty slow last year as well, and look at what happened the rest of the season.

On that 4 on 3 caps goal Staal was defending the cross ice pass. There is so much open ice 4 on 3 he can’t be everywhere. On the Ovechkin assist Staal forced him wide and Ovie just threw it out front and got a lucky bounce off of Lundqvist’s stick and right to the Cap player.
Overall Girardi and Staal shut down the Backstrom/Ovie line. I can’t remember a quality scoring chance from Ovie at all.

On the 4-3
When Girardi moves up, making it a strong side triangle, Staal needs to move to the middle. Staal didn’t go anywhere. If Girardi moves, he has to compensate. On the PP the attacking team always has a open guy, you need to be in position to get that guy if he gets the puck. You can’t just cover one player.

another game refs screw us on and another game we should of won
Henrik wasnt really all on tonight but that one goal I think it was Knuble scored on a beautiful pass and he came rushing in from back of the play, gotta do a better job on these backside passes
thats the 3rd goal ive seen like that this year and theres nothing King can do the net is wide open it seems like nobody picks up the guys behind the play
I mean if we can stay 500 when we get Gabs back we are in a great spot because you know everybody thought we would lose almost every game and not get play from our guys so if we go 500 then get Gabs back we still have a whole season left
could be ALOT worse right now
we got a bonafied line with Dubi AA Cally then Boyle Prust Avery are really solid and Feds is going to get goals sooner or later, honestly Frolov concerns me alot, where is he? Stepan I thought looked alot better tonight
and our forecheck has been great, we are in other teams zone basicaly the whole period but were just not scoring enough we need to starting baning some in after all that time in the other teams own end

If he was, that’s news to me. I know Christensen will only pass the puck if he has no chance of getting an open shooting lane, otherwise he’ll try a fancy move to get a little room. Prospal’s been the one feeding pucks to Gabby all year.
Christensen has the potential to be an elite goal scorer, but he doesn’t have the work ethic. He needs to work on his cardio so he can give more every shift ala Prust, Dubinsky, Callahan, etc. He takes too many shifts off where he’s content just gliding around the ice.

The really sad part of this game is that Washington’s top players had almost no impact, yet we still give up 4 goals.
Of the 4, 3 were bad mistakes on our part.
First goal was a beautiful redirect on a 4-3 power-play-the penalty leading to that power-play was very questionable…but in today’s NHL, especially this team-keep your stick away from the other player unless you know you can either 1. get the puck or 2. keep them from scoring. Nowadays, just getting your stick parallel near the body or touching the legs=2 minutes in the box.
2nd goal-Hank taketh away, and Hank giveth back. 2 errors on this play. 1. The forwards need to learn to properly cover the defense. It’s inexcusable that all 3 forwards went towards the right point man. Erskine got a quick pass and had all day to move in, take a huge wind-up, and blast it. A d-man, especially in 5-on-5 play should NEVER have that much time when you have 5 players in the defensive zone. 2. Slapshot from that far out…gotta be stopped. Hank’s making top-dollar, it’s time to stop the nickel and dime stuff.
3rd goal-1. Avery needs to get a piece of Ovechkin there. Avery tried to swipe the puck, then did an OLE! and skated the other way. Need to slow Ovechkin down. Staal played Ov ok-2. it’s the other 4 morons who need to back-check to the net and COVER somebody. Everybody watched Ovechkin and Knuble had a freebie. Didn’t help Hank directed Ov’s play right to the slot.
4th goal. 1. Another sloppy-tits play by MDZ. Wash is forechecking hard so he does a light pass along the boards to behind our own net, where 2. Roszival decides to tap the puck on the backhand…to behind him…where a Washington player says “OMFG THANKS!” and centers the puck….to a WIDE OPEN man who roofs it into the corner of the goal. That’s way too casual play with the puck in their own zone.
Sloppy coverage, sloppy puck management, sloppy effort. Yes, the refereeing was terrible on a few plays (definitely on the goal, Cally call was soft, but it’s understandable). I, however, think it’s totally unacceptable to be blaming losses on the officiating when we don’t play well enough to win. Unforced errors, terrible coverage, blown saves, and dreadful special teams (and Gaborik alone isn’t fixing that power-play) aren’t the officials fault.
by Caerid11 on Nov 10, 2010 12:51 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
Boyle-Great game overall. Nice to see him shooting the puck with some authority-also big props for standing up for MDZ when Chimera went after him. Keep feeding BIGFOOT ice-time.
Stepan-Maybe not his greatest, but definitely one of the better overall games he’s had since Buffalo. Noticed him skating faster and creating a good deal of chances.
FedEx-yeah, that lost goal sucks. Need to do more with that breakaway though. I think once we start getting players back-Feds finds himself in Hartford.
Dubi-damnit son, spend some time with Prust and learn to fight. That was embarrassing, and it would’ve meant a lot to see you kick Green’s punk-bitch ass.
DAC line-good on the forecheck, but they need to find a way to use that size and get the puck to the front of the net.
Rosi-MDZ pair-Rosi was a -3 on the night. That 4th goal was mainly his shitty effort on the puck to give it away.
Hank-gotta stop that slapshot. And I think on the Knuble goal Ov shot the puck off Hank which went right out into the slot. Gotta try and put it in a safer area since the rest of the team doesn’t believe in coverage.
Frolov-was he a healthy scratch? Bueller? Bueller? He had, like, 1 good play on a forecheck because the Wash. D-man had a brain-fart with the puck. I think it’s time to declare him an enemy combatant.
BOOGEY! Al Iafrate would’ve been proud of that bomb.
Avery-for shit’s sake, get a piece of Ovechkin when he goes by with the puck. Aves can skate, and we’ve seen him shoot the puck-time for him to start putting up some points.
Staal/Girardi-did a great job keeping Washington’s big guns in check most of the game. Girardi great hustle to keep the puck in the zone and flick a wrister towards Boyle who backhanded it home.

but here is the thing
we cried for youth all year, we got it on D. Next season we might even see two more infusions of youth with Valetenko and McDonagh. We’re going through some growing pains, MDZ is on a pretty similar defensive path from past year, Staal seems to be going in and out and Girardi happens to be excelling.
Regardless, this is to expected. We’re not a cup contending team this year, but if we re-tool our defense now, we start all over next year. Allowing the defense to use this as a learning year (don’t forget that Del Zotto probably needs another year after this one before we can really expect him to start shoring up defensively).
Del Zotto doesn’t need to be sent to Hartford (as you will see some people suggest) he just needs to not be played as a top-4 D man. He’s not there yet, but he’s certainly a NHL caliber defenseman.

Allowing the defense to use this as a learning year (don’t forget that Del Zotto probably needs another year after this one before we can really expect him to start shoring up defensively) makes our D better prepared next year, so the Valetenko and McDonagh don’t need to be treated like top 4 d men when they aren’t ready for that role.

Well, in some respects I agree with everything you’ve said. Where we differ is in how we respond. You yourself note that we have young emerging depth defensively. True. MDZ is NHL caliber. True.
But, we’re not a cup contending team this year? If we stay healthy, False. That was one of my biggest concerns this year (in specific, how much weight we put on Gabby’s, ehm, shoulders).
Look, we can’t get so addicted to the farm club that we are always playing with an eye on the bottom. We’ve got a few of the past few season’s prospects playing their best hockey ever. If Gabby is healthy and can get Frolov to wake up with some chemistry…if Fed can find a place on a third or fourth line and start being helpful…
Yes, we can contend for the cup this year. Not saying we will, but we can certainly compete in our division this year. In fact, the way things are looking, we can take our division this year. The defense is standing in our way. We have space to improve it with shuffling.
d
I try to tell most people I know that follow the Rangers or the NHL that I expect nothing from this year and next. Letting the kids get meaningful minutes is the ultimate goal this year. If they happen to sneak into the playoffs, which I think is a possibility given how weak the East looks to be this year outside of the real contenders, then I don’t have too much of a problem. They’re too good of a team to be complete bottom feeders so it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to get guys like DZ or Stepan the taste of playoff hockey.

Lol, I thought I heard Boogey scream out after the goal “The Price is WRONG, BITCH”.

+9001 and rec’d… too bad we weren’t playing Montreal, that would have been Priceless, (notice another pun there?)
Goalie Interference
Both possession of the puck and being driven into the goaltender are reasons to waive off goalie interference. Fedotenko had both.
Yes, we’re frustrated by the Rangers play but I disagree with those who say it has nothing to do with the Rangers losing. However, a goal at that point in the game changes the style of play by both teams. It’s entirely likely to change the outcome, too.
Fedotenko was forced into the goalie
by the Capitals defenseman. If a defenseman can force a guy into the goalie, and have a goal disallowed, then every defenseman would just push guys in front of the net into their goalie.

And they do
If the guy is facing the goalie. Otherwise it’s clear interference (when the forward falls backwards)

So frustrating
to see the refs directly impact the outcome of the game.. again. That penalty call that led to Caps’ first goal was pathetic. As someone else already mentioned, the Rangers dont need help with loosing to the Caps.
That said, whats really painful to watch is our execution off the rush. I may be in the minority here, but what the hell is Boogaard doing blasting a slap shot from just inside the blue line when we have a 2 on 0?? Great for him to score and end his draught and everything, but he should have skated hard to the net and created a real scoring opportunity with Christensen. That slap shot goes in once every 4 years… You gotta give your team the best chance to score. Similarly, the Rangers had a 4 on 2 later on in the game, Frolov gets a pass inside the blue line and puts a weak shot on goal. We’re not going to get very far if thats all we do when we have the numbers.
Overall, the lack of offensive talent on this team is our main weakness. The boys bring the effort, but that will only get you so far. That coupled with our young D thats prone to turnovers relegates us to a team that’s going to be fighting all year long just to stay above .500.

It wasn’t exactly a 2 on 0. There was a defender between Boogaard and the other guy on the rush, with another 1.5-2 strides behind Boogaard. With Boogaard’s lack of speed and skill, he doesn’t exactly have a lot of options. Try to outmaneuver the guy in between them and set up a pass? Not likely. Get closer and try something a little more fancy? Not likely. If it was any other Ranger with the puck, I’d say let the play develop a little more, but in this case it was probably the right play, and we got a goal out of it, so why are we complaining?
As a note about the refs
I know one of them was Justin St. Pierre. He is by far the WORST referee in hockey. Every game I watch him officiate is a joke. I can’t believe he’s allowed to continue his job.
Well, I said this before and gonna repeat it now. Our goalie stopped winning big games for us. Period. It started since he returned from the Olympics last year. He allows at least one soft goal each game (not counting the shutouts obviously).
Roszival….oh man. I counted 8 (eight) giveaways in yesterday’s game. It’s roughly every other shift he plays, he creates an opportunity for the opposition.
Frolov….more into the season, more this guy reminds me Chris Higgins, except he is not as ugly as a current Flames superstar is. And the saddest thing is that I don’t see (maybe somebody does) any willing to play hard and score goals.
Staal….he is NOT our #1 D-man. At least not yet. I think we expect a little too much from him. Last season (when he was not considered our #1 D-man) he seemed more relaxed and more confident at the same time.
The rest of the offence (except the first line, Boyle, Prust and Fed)…. waste of money.
Very disappointing but well deserved loss.

Lundqvist has stopped winning big games for us?
I’ll disagree with this pretty wholeheartedly. Lundqvist has been a rock for the Rangers, his save percentage is an astounding .924 right now, and he’s dealing with a pretty lackluster defensive corps.

I also disagree that Lundqvist isn’t winning big games for us. Just look at our last 2 wins against NJ and the Blackhawks. He stood on his head in those games.
Although having said that Lundqvist is giving up some bad goals. Almost 1 per game. He did let in a bad softie against Chicago only to stand on his head the rest of the way. He’s go to tighten up his game just like the D-men in front of him have to tighten their game.

Every goalie lets in bad goals. The guy over in NJ does it a lot too. Patrick Roy used to let in some bad ones too, especially when he decided to be cocky and hold up the puck for the shooter to see it.
Lundqvist’s career numbers are far superior to most Ranger goalies (his numbers are significantly better than Richter) and most goalies with the same amount of experience in the league. With the exception of last year, Lundqvist has had superior GAA and/or Save % stats to Ryan Miller just for the sake comparison.
Rozi might not have had the best game last night, but he’s been better this year and is far from their biggest problem on D.
Frolov I agree has been a disappointment. That was part of the risk/reward of the signing and he’s still considered low risk given that it’s a 1 year deal.
Whether it’s by calling someone the #1 D or not, Staal was their #1 D last year and he’s sharing that title with Girardi this year. He’s been off for a number of games this year, but he continually draws their toughest D assignments and even in his 4th year still has some maturing to do.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Nov 10, 2010 10:48 AM EST up reply actions
When you say Rozi’s been better this year, better than who? Than him last year? But last year he was a disaster. And this year he looks like his arms are tied up with his legs, no coordination whatsoever. Maybe he’s better this year but he’s not top 4 D anymore (maybe he’s never been). And note, I didn’t say a word about his contract.
Comparing Lundqvist to Richter or Roy is wrong. First, goalies then and goalies now cannot be compared because game has changed significantly and goalies have improved accordingly. But Richter and Roy never gave up momentum their respective teams once gained.
Yesterday Lundqvist gave up three (!!!) goals and the fourth one in the middle of the third period while the rest of the team was playing relatively well. That’s what I call giving up a momentum. Rangers have not won a game when they allowed a tiebreaking goal in the third.

I didn’t mention Rozi’s contract either. He’s not an all-star D, no one ever expected him to be one. I believe Ranger Smurf put out some stats that say Rozi’s been adequate in his own end. Last night’s eventual game winning goal was Del Zotto not getting puck up and out of the zone as quickly as he should have and he handcuffed Rozi with a poor decision to throw the puck to him while he had a forechecker bearing down on him.
Richter played a lot of his career in the “Dead Puck Era”. He became the full time starter in 94, which was the breakout year of the goalie. I’m sure in the dozens of more goals he let up on average than Lundqvist that many of them were momentum turners. I won’t dispute Richter’s importance to the franchise, especially in 1994, but as with any goalie he probably let up his fair share of bad goals. And I mentioned Ryan Miller as a contemporary comparison and Lundqvist has outperformed him in virtually every season they’ve both been in the league.
The Erskine goal last night was poor, but the 1st Caps goal was on a PP (regardless of whether it should have been on man down situation is a different story) and the 2nd Caps goal shouldn’t have been a scoring chance except that the D got sliced and diced by Ovie. Not mention Knuble made a great play to bat the puck out of midair.

o__o
WOAH…BOOGEYMAN’s got a GUN!!
if he actually tried to get better, we would have a Cam Neely in our hands
we should park him in front on the PP
hes gotta at least beat his career-high
I think I’d rather see Boyle parked in front of the net. He has the hands to accurately deflect a shot/pass or put in a rebound into an open portion of the net. I don’t necessarily trust Boogaard to do that, after what some could consider a “fluky” goal. Neuvirth, in all honesty, should have blocked that shot, despite how fast it might have been going. He knew the shot was coming at least a second to a second-and-a-half in advance, and was already set (I believe). Did Boogie snipe a top corner or something? I never saw where the shot actually went.
Absolutely deflating loss
Get off to the lead, have Brian Boyle bang in two goals and Boogaard hammer one in. Have Dubinsky miss the net my inches (the one that landed on top of the crossbar for a second). Have Fedotenko’s goal disallowed and then have him sprung for a breakaway on a GORGEOUS pass by Rozi only to have F-tank miss the net.
Agonizing loss… that I had to watch it while listening to Joe Beninati’s voice the whole time made last night something I want to forget. Does anyone else hate the way he says ‘Edzo’ to Eddie O? I never thought I’d dislike anyone from the cup team, but I am not a big Olczyk fan.
Loving the play of Brian Boyle, two goals, sticking up for his teammates, taking the body, etc. The Rangers should sign that power-skating coach and have her teach everyone to have some fucking confidence out there on the ice.
In Hank we trust.
If all Boyle needed was better skating and confidence, I don’t think LA would have gotten rid of him for a third round pick. Either way, their loss is our gain. That third round pick in 2010 was Jordan Weal… we’ll have to see how he turns out, if anything, out of sheer curiosity.
I think the skating turned his game around
He also seems to be using his size fairly well. I think the confidence is a big part of it too, a lot of pressure in LA when you are the first round pick… a little bit less pressure in NY when you know you are on the 4th line (sometimes 3rd) and expected to be a role player (killing penalties).
In Hank we trust.
miscellaneous
There is no doubt that the Rangers have grown as a team despite the fact that they have been without Gaborik, Prospal and Drury but just 2 wins in 8 tries at home is totally unacceptable. I thought it last season and I have seen nothing to change my mind. It is time to give up on Erik Christensen and move on. His many shortcomings are tough enough to overlook when he is contributing offensively but now that he has become the invisible man on offense it is time to wave good bye.
