Rangers News, Notes and Game Preview

Happy 85th Birthday to the New York Americans, who died in 1942, shortly after putting "The Curse" on our beloved Rangers. The Americans made their debut 85 years ago tonight, against the Montreal Canadiens.

On Dec. 15, 1925, professional hockey made its debut in New York before a capacity crowd of 17,000 at the grand opening of Madison Square Garden. Regimental bands and the Montreal Canadiens were on the ice for the first N.H.L. game in the city, and hundreds of New York’s society elite in tuxedos and gowns filled the most expensive seats.

From CBS Sports:

Sidney Crosby's personal streak is still going, but the Pittsburgh Penguins' string of victories is not after a tight loss to an Atlantic Division foe.

They'll try to bounce back by extending a pretty impressive run against another rival.

The Penguins have earned 20 points from their last 11 meetings with the New York Rangers, a stretch Crosby looks to help his team continue at home Wednesday night as he tries to record a point in a career-high 20th consecutive game.

Pittsburgh (21-9-2) went into Philadelphia on Tuesday with a 12-game winning streak, one its captain had largely made possible with an 18-game point streak in which he'd amassed 20 goals and 16 assists.

The Rangers (18-13-1) should be rested and ready, though, after shutting down one of the league's most dangerous attacks Sunday. New York's offense wasn't bad, either, scoring four goals during a nine-minute stretch in the second period of a 7-0 rout of Washington.

"I think from a team aspect everyone was going," center Brian Boyle told the Rangers' official website. "Everyone contributed. This was a fun one."

New York should get a big emotional boost Wednesday. Captain Chris Drury, who has missed all but one period this season with a left index finger he's broken twice, is expected to play for the first time since Oct. 15.

"Getting Dru back on the ice and back for the games is huge for us," defenseman Marc Staal said. "He will help us in so many ways. And we're all very excited to have him back in the lineup."

Drury is expected to skate on a line with Sean Avery and either Todd White or Erik Christensen.

Derek Boogaard did not accompany the Rangers to Pittsburgh, his shoulder is still bothering him.

CBS Sportsline has the Rangers ranked 7th in their latest power rankings.

Maybe the Rangers will get a power play tonight. Maybe.

It will be interesting to see if anything happens between Crosby and Brandon Dubinsky and/or Ryan Callahan, after the slew foot Crosby laid on Cally, and the war of words between Crosby and Dubinsky.

Speaking of Dubi, here is a nice story from the Litchfield County Times about Brandon visiting a junior prep school in Connecticut to work with the boys and girls hockey teams. Well done Dubi!

Fellas, need a last minute Christmas present for the woman in your life? How about a Liberty jersey dress?

See you guys tonight in the game thread

I recorded/watched the Flyers/Penguins game last night and it was as close to a playoff game as you can get without the possibility of elimination. The Rangers have a rough four days ahead of them. Watching the NY v. Pittsburgh MSG preview featuring “The Slew Foot” I couldn’t help notice the Rollerball parallels.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

They need Hank at his best, and do their best to stay out of the box. Easier said than done against the NHL darlings, but those are the two biggest keys. Third key is to score more goals than they do :).

Penalties were absurd in the Pitt – Penn game. What’s worse is the players feeding into it. Holding sticks under their arms to draw hooking calls, reacting like JFK in Dallas if a stick comes anywhere near their face and diving into the dasher when they’re checked near the boards. I’m sick of this FIFA crap.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

+1

I saw at least one blatant stick under the arm penalty called.

Hoping Boogaard is back tonight. Him vs. Engelland would be interesting

It's no worries

it kinda reminds me of Brashear last year a little, since he would always get injured after fights, but I think that Boogaard brings way more to the table.

very true

plus there’s no sour taste with Boogaard like there was with Brashear and the Betts shot.

Boogaard is very likeable unlike Brashear.

It doesn’t help that management has been rushing players back (Drury earlier than expected, breaks his finger in another spot, Boogaard in despite the shoulder issues, Prust hasn’t been playing close to 100% for a good 2 weeks), either for the sake of the team, or because the players really really want to play (and will play through pain). While this might be a management issue, it says something about the players… and also why hockey is the best sport in the world :)

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

Lines?

Does anyone know the lines for tonight?

by R.C.Belangies on Dec 15, 2010 2:45 PM EST reply actions

Normal, of late:

Fedotenko-Stepan-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
Frolov-Boyle-Prust
Avery- Drury-Christensen (Drury might play wing)

Gilroy’s the scratch on D, haven’t seen the pairings, assume Staal-Girardi will be split unless Crosby/Malkin are together.

If Kunitz is still out, Crosby and Malkin will play together.

by Lunkwill Fook on Dec 15, 2010 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I find it interesting that Fedotenko is still playing 1LW. Then again, it’s been the wild-card spot since Frolov decided to take every other shot as a wrap-around attempt. I like how they’re keeping D-AA-C together (no more doghouse for AA!!), though I’d really prefer Avery on 3LW here, Frolov really isn’t fourth-line material (but is playing like it?)… just a few thoughts.

Frailov

But for Sunday when he threw body around a bit, Fro Is playing like AHL material.

Thanks for the link to the NY Americans story in the Times….good stuff. I own an Americans sweater, and I purchased it in the summer of 1993. Still a weird good luck charm for me until this day.
