To Hell with the Naysayers, Being a Ranger Fan is Fun Again
You guys know I've been a Ranger fan a long time. I go back to the "pajama jersey" days of the 70's, and I've been with them ever since. Without sugar-coating it, I've seen a lot of bad hockey, and along the way some really bad players that wore the Blueshirt.
Of course there have been great memories along the way, the great run to the 79 Finals against the Canadiens, the "Smurfs" of the Herb Brooks years, the upstart 1985-86 team that ran into a wall named Patrick Roy, and of course 1994.
Coming into this season, I think I made it pretty clear to you guys I had no expectations from this year's team, other than hoping to see progress. Playoffs were of no consequence to me this season, because this year to me isn't really about this year, it's about next year, and probably more about the year after that and beyond. Of course nothing compares to playoff hockey, but I was perfectly willing to forego that again this year as long as I felt this team was headed in the right direction. I didn't want to see this team rob Petr Prucha to pay Paul Mara (like that one? Off the cuff, free comedy!) just to make some frantic mad dash to the 8th seed that would end badly for them, and for us.
The first thirty five games of this season have already had their ups and downs, but I can tell you this: I have not had this much fun watching Ranger hockey since the year after the lockout, when no one expected anything from the Rangers, and they had a great regular season. This year's team is gritty, exciting, resilient, and for the most part, they are in every game.
You guys know I'm pretty active on Facebook, and have a lot of Ranger fans as friends, and it really gets to me when I see people who are so quick to get down on them. One loss, and the "Rangers suck!" comments fly. To those that feel that way, I can only reiterate that I am not sure what you expected from this team in 2010-11, but if you had told me in September that thirty five games in this team would be 20-14-1, in playoff position, and doing most of it without their Captain, without Vinny Prospal, partially without Marian Gaborik, and with a Henrik Lundqvist who has not always been at the top of his game, I would have said "Where do I sign?"
Brian Boyle with twelve goals already? Brandon Prust leading the league with three shorties? Rangers leading the league in shorthanded goals? Dan Girardi leading the team in assists? Marc Staal finding offense? Steve Eminger playing well? C'mon, how is this not fun?
More after the jump.....
The Rangers are no longer a team of sweaters cashing paychecks. The Rangers are a team of guys who play hard for each other every night, and taking on the personality of their coach, who also seems to have changed his style somewhat, and perhaps he and his team have "met in the middle", so to speak. For the first time in years, they are a likable team, and one that as a fan you can and should take pride in.
Enjoy the ride Ranger fans, it's been awhile since it has been this fun. Don't let the Facebook crowd and Twitterati get to you, and I'll try and do the same.
A few random thoughts:
- We have a fighter on this team who is overpaid, has been hurt a few times already, and is now suffering headaches. Anybody else get the feeling this has happened before?
- You guys see the video of Dale Weise with the Gatorade bottle? Funny stuff, and I'm with Eddie, I think Double A set him up. I can't post the link from work, but I'm sure one of you has it.
- Looks like the Rangers may get Prospal and Callahan back around the same time next month, which should make for a great last three months of the season, and beyond.
- Rick Carpiniello from Rangers Report will join us tomorrow night for our Blueshirt Banter Radio Holiday Spectacular. If you haven't heard Carp on the show before, he is a great guest, and we always have a lot of fun. Plus, Carp's Boneheads always join us for the show, and they are a great bunch of people. That's tomorrow night at 8 PM.

i don't care about philly's record
it doesn’t matter if they’re the best team since the ’77 canadiens, losing to philly has always and will always put me in a murderous rage
i just absolutely cannot stand losing to that team, especially in that hovel they play in

Veering off topic, but who cares:
God’s honest truth, I took my wife to see Rocky Balboa the day it came out. The theater was packed, mostly couples, mostly our age and older. Couples who grew up on Rocky.
I have never, ever in my life, heard more grown men sobbing in one place. It was like every guy in the theater was saying goodbye to Adrian as well.

On this post. The rebuild started the year they let Jagr walk. I don’t think the Rangers will ever allow themselves to go through a full rebuild and honestly I don’t think their core of players would unintentionally play bad enough for them to sink lottery status, but that was a pretty hefty regime change after letting a couple of legends go (Jagr and Shanny) and purging some of their older compatriots like Straka.
Obviously moves like signing Redden showed that old habits die hard but I think they were taking a cautious approach to infusing the team with more youth. I don’t know how much input Renney had into some of the personnel decisions and whether he wanted a more gradual rebuild, but I have a strong feeling that the big youth movement since the coaching change was made was heavily influenced by Torts.
It’s also a delight that while it looks as if the Rangers are in a stepping stone year, meaning somewhere in between a rebuilding year and a contending one, that their neighbors to the East and West are having their own nightmare seasons. I think it’s also a good thing that the Pens and Flyers are strong this year, because that pushes the Rangers to improve. As great as it would be for the team to be in first place, doing so amongst weak competition will probably inflate the actual accomplishments of the team (such as the Caps of the past few years). Having Cup contenders in your division can only force your team to be better, and you have to hope that even if things don’t end up where we’d all like them to this year, they stay the course and keep adding in home grown talent and look toward established/premium talent only when they’re close.

Let’s just leave out a template:
Player X is overpaid, they need to bring up Dale Weise who is cheaper and fights.

The Rangers have been very enjoyable to watch this season, and they’re very easy to root for.
Great article
The Rangers are definitely moving in the right direction. It’s nice to finally have an outlook of improvement versus pure aging.
Now if they could only sign some good cheap players who hit like Garnet Exelby and John Erskine while getting rid of those roster albatrosses Marc Staal and Brandon Dubinsky then we’d be talking!

+1, damn right.
2014 will be our year. Contracts hindering our success (Drury, Rozsival) will be off the books, doubt either will be resigned, but I wouldn’t mind keeping Drury around as a fourth line center for about what Prospal’s getting now (1.1m + bonuses) if Werek (I think he’s the center) isn’t good to go by then (though I doubt it). We pretty much have our core already (it will be complete when a few more prospects are infused in the lineup), and odds are we won’t need hired guns to make a yearly push.
Dubinsky – Anisimov – Gaborik
______ – Stepan – Callahan
______ – Boyle – Prust
______ – Drury – ______
Can fill in the offensive holes with any of Zuccarello, Krieder, Bourque, Werek, Horak, Hagelin, and Weise. I probably missed a couple, don’t hate me.
Staal – Sauer
Girardi – MDZ
______ – ______
Can fill in the defensive holes with McDonagh, McIlrath, Pashnin (if he comes over from the KHL when his contract expires), and Valentenko.
Lundqvist – Biron
(Biron might be able to be replaced with CJ or Stajcer if they get some seasoning before then).
Can’t wait til 2014.
.
Jim, I have been a fan since 1967 (yes, I am old). This was a great post and dead on. I have said it a million times this year that I cannot remember the last time I was so happy to be a Ranger fan. The last time was probably May, 2004 (year after the lockout) when I stood for 10 minutes giving the Rangers a standing ovation for LOSING to the Sabres in game 6. That was the game Shanahan said he was coming back mainly because of that gesture from the fans in a losing cause. Othere than that, it was 1997 when they lost to the Flyers in the conference finals. I love this team. I don’t care about the final results (I do but not as much) because of the way this team plays. I go to about 25 home games per season and this is the best in a long time. Thanks Jim for saying what we all feel about this team.
it just feels like 2004

I don’t know what will happen in postseason, but I agree that this team is fun to watch and easy to root for. They are far from pretty or perfect but they grind out wins and don’t give up.
if they just keep working hard and stick to their philosophy they could be the kind of team that surprises in the postseason, though I agree we’re a couple of years away from contending. I do think we’ll be in the top 8 come April.
I’d really like to see us beat every top 8 team in our Conference at least once, convincingly. That leaves the Thrashers, Flyers, Habs and Tampa. I would do a lot for team confidence heading into the spring.
“Easy to root for”
I wish I’d said that. The past few years it has been extremely difficult to root for this team.

This team has shown us the heart we’ve always wanted to see in our Rangers. Win or lose, they’ve shown they’re moving in the right direction as a team and an organization (letting the kids play and learn from their mistakes). While I’d love to see them get into the playoffs and see what kind of havoc they can raise, I can see a cup contender being built for 2013 and beyond.
These guys
show that they care for each other out there, and will battle for each other, and fight if needs be. There is a special feeling now with them, and even though they have some stinkers of a game, they are out there the next night or two, ready to turn that around; Only hope the kids in CT recognize this (if they watch our games that is) and when their time is ready to come up, they slide right in and contribute the same way. Make teams have to outwork us, kinda what I am saying.
Rangers FTW!

I haven’t read any of the comments yet Jim, but I do want to say that ALL of the signs were on the wall for this last year. The change of tactics began mid-way through the season and showed steady improvement. All of our kids were working hard and showed promise. Sather’s patience and moves were all geared for this product.
I must say that it really, really bothered me how lots of folks failed to see how hard working our core was. And the idea of not caring whether your club, in any sports, makes the playoffs is just plain weird. We all agreed on Redden and this year simply confirms what a drag he was on the attitude and playing style of the club. At the beginning of the season I was picking the Rangers to finish 10-15 games over .500. I based this on how they skated against the elite clubs last season, in particular, how well the new style matched up against the Penguins and Flyers.
d
I’m sure you know this, but I wouldn’t take too seriously what guys say on Facebook…it’s well known a lot of idiots reside there. And if you think they’re bad, try checking out the ones on the Yankee page. COMPLETE morons….
