Rangers News: Rangers Call Up Mats Zuccarello, Is Gaborik Injured?

Mats Zuccarello

In a move that I speculated might happen earlier last week, the New York Rangers have recalled Mats Zuccarello

Zuccarello has been on fire in Connecticut the past few weeks, and has really been working hard to improve all phases of his game. It will be interesting to see who he is paired with and what type of line combinations John Tortorella tries to fit him into.

UPDATE by Joe Fortunato: This just came through the twitter wire from our friend Jesse Spector

NYDNRangers   MDZ out for #NYR, but MZA up: Mats Zuccarello recalled from Connecticut. Wonder if that's a sign of how serious Gaborik's groin issue is.

For those of you who don't know, Marian Gaboik isn't skating today because of a "groin issue" which has been labeled as "a sore groin." Maybe it's a little worse than what we think?

Well, this just got interesting. Thoughts guys?

Yup

Glad to see him get another shot with the ways he’s been playing. Putting him on a line with Avery & Drury would be what I’m looking for. I would like to see Dubi & AA on a line with Gabby too.

Apparently he's here to replace Gabby it seems

Hope not

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

With Gaborik not skating today I’m sure the call up means that it is at least highly unlikely that Gaborik can play tomorrow.

by M.R.M. on Dec 22, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think this certainly means Gaborik is out tomorrow night.

I’ll guess MZA gets thrown immediately to the wolves, with Dubi-AA-MZA or Dubi-Stepan-MZA being the first line. The rest probably F-Boyle-Prust and F-Drury-Stepan (fill in the Fs as required), and Avery-EC-White on the bottom.

I know lines in practice today were much different than that, but MZA should change things.

That might be cool

even though I said I didn’t wanna see Stepan and MZA lol. Still that might have some chemistry.

I doubt Torts will play two rookies on the same line. My guess is MZA will play with Dubi and AA or Dubi and Drury.

I don’t know about you guys, but I am ok with that. I don’t want to see him get 4th line minutes. Throw him out there, see what happens.

I’m not thrilled with it, I think I’d rather see something like Frolov-Stepan MZA on the 3rd, with Dubi-AA-Drury on the first, but I do believe that if they were going to bring up a 4th line minutes guy, they’d have recalled either Weise or Williams.

Wow...

I am really shocked at this…not Gabby’s injury, but the MZA call up. A lot of you have been wanting this since the beginning….lets see what happens. I wish him the best. It would be great to have a St. Louis on the club if he can hang.

Lets hope he doesn’t get creamed.

MDZ out of practice today with the flu. Unknown whether he’ll play tomorrow.

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 22, 2010 12:15 PM EST reply actions

Put him on the 1st or 2nd line

If you bury him on the 3rd or 4th he won’t do anything. The kid should see minutes and as someone said be thrown to the wolves. But let’s be honest, the lines will probably change a lot tomorrow night. Torts won’t keep them together unless of course they are kicking a$$.

Against the Lightning…. I just hope we don’t get into penelty trouble again.

Oh god this is not good news, Gabby with a groin injury……………… I know he hasn’t been playing great but him in the lineup is much better than without. MZA Im happy for but i’ll save my excitement for when he shows me he can hang with the big boys.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 22, 2010 2:44 PM EST reply actions

Well, if what happened during Gabby’s shoulder separation was any indication, Dubinsky should start to play like a beast again, although I think he misses Callahan.

by Joe1969 on Dec 22, 2010 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I hope Sather’s keeping an eye on Kolarik as his next option if MZA struggles to score. I don’t think MZA’s defensive zone game is strong enough to avoid Tortorella’s glare, and Kolarik’s sporting a +7 and has been on a little bit of a hot streak himself lately. Not rooting against MZA of course, just thinking about backup plans in case Gabby’s out for more than a few games. Kolarik has speed, quickness, and great hockey sense who I see earning a regular NHL roster spot.

Kolarik has been lighting it up down there, even when he isn’t scoring he’s the best player on the ice, save zuccarello on some nights.

gabroik is always hurt???

why is gabroik always have a injury?? or is it more seriuos permanant issues hes not sharing for years..

i think we should do a test on him to seee what s really wrong or trade him for someone reliable or who can be an all around powerforward in the leaugue like malkin, crosby, ovechchin, carter, briere, sedin, spezza, heatley, datsuk, etc.. who always get it done and dont go down to often.. im sure torts would rather have an ignigla or someone like that style then gabby.. sounds like a girls name hahhahahaha maybe he needs to stop playing like one!?

You do realize what we would have to give up to get any single one of those names, right? We’d have to give up Gaborik + Callahan + Top 3 prospect + 1/2 round picks, and that’s just to keep them on the phone. I agree with Caerid, get your doses checked :P

those two define the

I love that fact. A team full of two-way forwards will backcheck without mercy and can create odd-man rushes because they can make big plays defensively that suddenly change the momentum.

It’s a great thing that our core guys (Dubi, Cally, Boyle) can kill penalties. Love two-way forwards. Love ’em!

thats why I want another winger that can score because we need another star caliber player that can score and we dont have to depend on Gaborik for everything
I am really happy for MZA I love this guy, I hope he kills it and stays in NY

by Archie Barberio on Dec 22, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

Chia, we managed just fine with Gaborik out of the lineup. If he’s not 100%, I’d rather he get some rest so he can start putting up points again. You can tell he hasn’t looked 100% since he got back from his shoulder injury. He shies away from traffic and just plays the perimeter. MZA is probably the best candidate to play in his absence. It’d be futile to suggest or predict lines, as the LWers are interchangable other than Dubinsky on the first line, Anisimov/Stepan are interchangable, and Boyle could possibly be moved up to the second line if absolutely needed. Right wings are pretty much Cally/MZA for top 2, then Prust, then White or Weise.

I too hope MZA makes a name for himself during his stint with the big club. It’s not the end of the world if he needs some more time to adjust, gotta cut the kid some slack.

Is it just me, or does SBNation list Zuccarello as 5’9", 170? 5’9" in skates maybe, and 170 pounds soaking wet (maybe). 5’7", 155 might be more accurate.

Zuccs

Hope plays better against the boards than he did in the preseason, whenever anyone wanted to they could sandwich him against the wall and he would be taken right out of the play. He has to be elusive and dogged in the corners. His long stick is a bit of a detriment to him when he is in tight spaces. There are things he can do to help that part of his game- playing the puck with his feet or maybe playing with a stick that isn’t twenty feet long.

Looking forward to him on the PP unit.

If he can plaster Cheechoo (hope he’s ok though) then he’ll hold his own. I believe players like that avoid contact, ala Gionta. Can’t wait to see MZA play.

by Richter1994 on Dec 22, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

A lot of players avoid contact at the NHL level, no matter how big or small they are. Take a look at Brad Richards’ hit count (I know it is not the most reliable information to determine how physical a player is). I have heard MZA plays with a chip on his shoulder at the AHL level, a yappy little guy on the ice.

i would go after a # 1 center....

i would trade gabby for a briere or lecavier type.. when does he ever stay healthy?
but thats the least of problemss center and left wing need to be found on our top line.. speed and skill.. we should went after hossa or heatley… i think ny would be better off. if gabby can remain healthy and paired with talent and speed on wing and center one day then he could possibly stay.. look how much better he will be when prospal comes back .. and hes getting older and slower.. !!!! i rest stepan i like but if there was a powerbooster under him he would be a goal scorer.. great playmaker and defensively responsible….

by STUGOTZ143 on Dec 23, 2010 12:31 AM EST reply actions

god people

whats with the Gaborik trade talk? you realize people in the NHL think he is one of the best hockey players in the NHL when healthy right?

by Archie Barberio on Dec 23, 2010 3:50 AM EST up reply actions

Gaborik is fine now after his hip surgery. He missed 6 games last season, and has missed 12 this season (NOT DUE TO HIS HIP/GROIN), so this “Mr. Glass” talk should really cease until he actually starts missing 20+ games.

If you got hit on the boards in the same position he was in, I’m pretty sure you’d damage your shoulder as well. It’s the nature of the game, get used to it. Go watch the Euro leagues if you wanna watch figure skating with sticks and minimal hitting involved.

by Kritikal on Dec 23, 2010 6:10 AM EST up reply actions

dude is a monster

beast on any open breakway its a goal
he can score he is that good where you build a team around him

by Archie Barberio on Dec 23, 2010 3:51 AM EST reply actions

This is very true. Feed him a nice pass and as soon as there’s any kind of opening, he’ll snipe the shit out of it. It sucks that Gaborik can’t get the same prowess in the shootout.

Gaborik isn’t just a dynamic scorer, his passing game is very underrated. If he’s drawing multiple defenders, he will move the puck to an open man, or use them as a screen and get a puck on net. There’s maybe 3 or 4 guys in the league I’d take on my team over Gaborik if I was building from scratch, and we should be fortunate we have him for another three-and-a-half years.

Get him a playmaker, and he’ll be top 3 in the league for goals and points for the duration of his contract.

by Kritikal on Dec 23, 2010 6:17 AM EST up reply actions

The key?

Gaborik does not miss the net – ever. In fact, he does not miss getting off the perfect shot every time. He picks corners and forces goalies to make a save.

I have never seen him miss the net.
I have never seen him hit the goalies logo.

Give him and Stepan time to gel and they will be lethal together.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .
