Rangers Recap: Rangers Go Down in 11-Round Shootout to Lightning
The Rangers deserved to win this game and there is no debating that. They outworked the Lightning, outshot the Lightning, and outplayed the Lightning. They had numerous opportunities to seal the deal in the third period and also had goaltender Dan Ellis beat several times in the shootout, but again, no conversion. They picked up a point in the standings, but a single point should not be satisfying considering the effort tonight. Two points should have been theirs. This loss stings.
The first period began with a Michal Rozsival turnover in his own zone, resulting in a Martin St. Louis snap-shot goal two minutes in. New York came storming back in the second half of the period when Ruslan Fedotenko and Alexander Frolov scored just 12 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead. That lead didn't last long, however, as Steven Stamkos buried his 27th of the season before the buzzer. 2-2 was the score going into intermission. The first was openly played, but both teams would eventually buckle down defensively.
Despite outshooting the Bolts, the Rangers were unable to find the back of the net in the second period. Instead, Vinny Lecavalier would deflect a Pavel Kubina pass behind Henrik Lundqvist to give Tampa a 3-2 advantage. It bothers me that Lecavalier was able to plant himself at the top of the crease and not be contested by a single Ranger. A player of his skill should be a target out there, but instead he was able to sneak behind the defense and score a goal. That cannot happen.
The Lightning weathered the Rangers' storm for as long as they could, but Derek Stepan came through with the tying goal with just 8:42 remaining in regulation time. That is the second time in two weeks that Stepan has ‘stepped' up and scored a tying goal in the third period, as he did it against the Coyotes not too long ago. He is quickly becoming a clutch player that head coach John Tortorella has a lot of trust in.
Neither team was able to score the winner in overtime, so to a shootout we went. 18,200 strong all rose to their feet at Madison Square Garden and did not sit down once through the eleven rounds it took to finally find a victor in this game. Erik Christensen and Mats Zuccarello both scored for the Rangers in the shootout, but all nine other shooters were stopped by Dan Ellis. Henrik Lundqvist stopped eight shooters, but it was Ryan Malone's wicked wrister that beat him to win the game for Tampa Bay in round eleven.
Lundqvist played very well tonight. Sure, he was matched by an exceptional performance from Ellis, but some key saves in the third period allowed for the Blueshirts to make the comeback. Also, to be able to completely stone eight straight shooters in a skills competition is remarkable. I was very impressed by that, but then again, it was expected from the King.
Mats Zuccarello did more than just impress in his National Hockey League debut. He created offensive chances with linemates Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan, and because of that received 17:52 of ice time from the coach. As I said he would, he dodged multiple hits with his smooth agility and his speed is very beneficial to the forecheck. Torts had him out there late in the game when they needed a tying goal, which is something that caught my attention right away. It is the kid's first game and he is already being put out in key situations. That says a lot.
His shootout attempt was spectacular as well. Mats froze Ellis by slowing up in the slot and then made a series of dekes to wrap the puck around his outstretched pad. He will be returned to the AHL to play on the 26th, but do not be surprised if he is recalled after that game to play the Islanders on the 27th. He deserves it.
How about Derek Stepan? The Minnesota native is having one hell of a rookie year. From his opening night hat trick, to these tying goals, to shootout attempts. The list is endless. Stepan is a part of the club's core already and shows it each and every game. Plus, I love the intensity he plays with, which is evident by watching him after he scores a goal. That smile and fist-pump are priceless.
Marc Staal and Dan Girardi were very physical on Steven Stamkos. I liked that, but Stammer still was able to get on the scoresheet. I guess there really is no stopping him, but they did enough defensively to slow him down. That is good enough for me.
The Rangers will not play again until Monday when they host the rival Islanders at MSG. The Isles are coming off of back-to-back wins, so something tells me they will not be as easy to play against as they were the last time they visited the Garden this season.

It would have been nice to get 2 points rather than 1, but I still think there were many positives tonight – the team played really hard as NIck said, outplayed the Lightning, but Tampa is an opportunistic team that capitalizes on any mistakes, and there were 2 doozies tonight in the opening period.
I thought MZA was really impressive, not just his obvious skill, but his poise, which he shares with Stepan.
So keep this one in perspective – we’ve now played 36 games and have 7 more points than we did at this point last year, we have a team philosophy, and we are starting to execute it on a consistent basis.
My question is – if Gaborik returns on Monday, do we still see MZA, and if so, who will he replace?
they could drop Drury down to the fourth line and scratch or demote White. to keep tonight’s line together though would mean Frolov-AA-Gabby as a line.

If we demote White, that means he has to pass through waivers, right? (I’m all for losing him, he contributes nothing).
For the sake of argument let’s say White goes, Gabby comes back Monday and we also re-call MZA, then would you put MZA on the 2nd line with Dubinsky?
What would your 4 lines be?
white has been on waivers about 5 times already this year. nobody is gonna claim him so hell always be an option

he does not have to go through the claims process until the 6th of Jan. he can be sent directly any time right now

Agreed on the poise, which he turns into opportunity. Give him a handful of games and he’ll regularly show up on the scoresheet.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

i would not call tonight’s game great by any means. he was solid
by Michael Gleich on Dec 24, 2010 2:06 AM EST up reply actions
may be semantics...
but i agree with you. “solid” best describes it. .875sv% isn’t great. but I think we do tend to get spoiled by Henrik. For instance Ellis had an above average game with 3 goals against.
I can live with solid, still can’t call the guy out on his glove.

I didn’t think he had a great game a bit rusty imo. His reaction time was off a little but he seemed to get sharper as the shootout went on. Nothing to worry about, to be expected with a layoff since the Flyer game.
In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
first 2 goals werent even his fault, they both came off of terrible defensive zone passes

My hats off...
to MZA. I was very impressed with how he handled his NHL debut. Never thought I’d see it, especially not this season, but I’m glad to have him.

MZA should have been here 2 weeks ago instead of having the likes of White, BooBoo, etc in the line-up. But better late than never. I always thought that once he was up that he would be a top 6 forward and I even wanted on a line with Gaby when Gaby was playing. I think that much of his skill. I hate to admit it but FroLoaf was great tonight. He got extremely lucky on his goal because even with an open net he shot it wide but it banked off a skate for the goal (how you can shoot wide 5 feet in front of the net is beyond me). Stepan, a star in the making. Enough said. Dubi, his usual effective self, just didn’t score. Staal, a monster last night. The King was the King. They should have won but they keep battling no matter the situation. I love this team. Again, they played well without Gaby. Just sayin.
Evidently he spent his time in Hartford well and probably needed to adjust to the North American rink and physical style. He started slow down there. Plus, we’ve been playing good hockey so there was no need to rush him. It isn’t like we sucked without him or were in crisis or anything.
Still, I’ll eat humble pie on this one…so far.

it’s fine but I was tired of seeing a small group of vets doing nothing and I didn’t think it would hurt to bring him up.

MZA=complete 180
What a first game for this kid. In the preseason he was a lost little boy who got tossed around like a ragdoll. What a difference it made sending him to the whale to get “adjusted” to the north American game. He made great passes all night..including the pass to dubi when he hit the post. He didnt look as nervous like in the pre season..showed some character by staring down…I mean up at his countryman victor hedman..and had a nice dangle to finish his NHL debut. He played well with step..and even step showed some leadership by talking with mats after every shift. All good signs from our youth..and we get a point out if it too.

Yea...+1
when I went to the game in Detroit during the pre-season he was WAY out of his league. He looked literally scared to go anywhere near the boards. You could see him start to go into the corner and then stop. He was knocked off his feet more times than I can remember. I think what might have happened is that he got hit hard his first shift or two and was shaken up. But, small skaters can definitely learn how to absorb impacts and with time that gives confidence.
Hey, I’m only 5’7" so I love it when the smaller guys use their skills to compete.
]
So how long till Dan Ellis calls out MZA for “disrespecting” him by making those moves?
I also thought MZA had a very strong game though he should’ve stayed on Vinny for that third goal instead of backing away to the other side of the crease.
Overall not a bad debut for the kid and I expect to see him make an even bigger impact against the isles and devils next week…maybe even a goal or two
"If I had the Rangers payroll, I'd make the playoffs every year" Glen Sather
It took them 30 years to implement the forward pass and 70 to mandate helmets thus making all hockey players who wear helmets and visors as well as goalies who wear masks and pads all wimpy cry babies
One the VL goal, it looked like MZA was watching the back door and figured the D had the man in front.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Things that Really Stuck Out
Obviously Tampa capitalized on our two mistakes in the first period. Rozi making that pass in the neutral zone doesn’t surprise me too much, but Dan Girardi trying to clear the puck up the middle of our own zone is a mistake I really don’t expect Girardi to make. Girardi also took a bad penalty in this game. He settled down by the end of the second, and I know it’s splitting hair, but Girardi’s play cost us in this game. Like I said, I know it’s splitting hairs, but when we play this well and don’t get two point it’s these little things that hurt us.
Stepan… goodness. Everyone talks about this kids vision, but what a highlight reel goal that was! What creativity. And ten goals before the break? I could easily see Stepan scoring 25 this season.
MZA is here to stay. The thing that really stuck out to me is his confidence despite being at the NHL level for only one game. I read a quote in the Times today from MZA when he was asked about his stare down with Hedman. At first he replied by joking, “I was warning to keep his head up when he went into the corner, otherwise I would hit him.” MZA would go on to say that Hedman was just congratulating him and wishing him good luck, but something about that quote gives me the feeling MZA gets it, and that shootout goal DEFINITELY makes me think he gets it.
Girardi had an off night
It did seem that he wasnt stellar tonight. Players have off lights this was one of them for him, he did get better as the game went on. It might have been the long break between games that had him off his game or family issues for christmas or something. I dont really think anyone wants to put blame on Girardi though he has done so much this season a few bad plays are easily looked passed by me atleast
Consistent
No Callahan. No Gaborik. Same effort. Can’t win’em all but they play hard in every game and don’t panic. Look at the stats on how hard it is to come back in the NHL after trailing at the end of the 2nd. I don’t think anyone here gave up when they were trailing after 2 periods. No complaints here.
The biggest problem we face is that it is likely that this team will be in the play-offs or certainly in contention as the trade deadline approaches. My fear is that Sather will sacrifice some of the future for a “proven veteran.”

in the shootout? I thought he would have been a better option than Rosival, etc.

can you people explain to me why Marion Gaborik should be traded?
40 40 season last year top 5 in pts, besides missing time and his mini slump his numbers were on pace for a good season
this is one of the best offensive players in the game
you get rid of Gaborik your walking backwards, you need a prolific scorer look at Cup teams, every winner the last couple of years has one
Dubinsky yes is great Stepan is going to be great Callahan is a grinder love his play but you need a scorer to be around these type of players man seriously wake the f up
