Rangers Recap: Rangers Flatten Isles, 7-2, "Gilroy Was Here"

The Matt Gilroy Ranger fans have been waiting a long time for showed up tonight, scoring two goals and helping the Rangers crush the Islanders, 7-2 at Madison Square Garden tonight, ending the Islanders modest three game winning streak.

I guess you can call this a "come from behind win", since the Islanders did lead 2-1 at this point, but after Marian Gaborik tied the game at two late in the first period, this one was all Blueshirts.  I'm not sure how many late period goals the Rangers have scored this year, without looking I would guess around a half dozen, and to their credit it seems like they have been able to feed off of every one of them.

After Gabby tied it, Gilroy put the Rangers ahead for good, and the rout was on. Brian Boyle made it 4-2 before the end of the second, which I guess would count as a late goal as well, and then Brandon Dubinsky, Ruslan Fedetenko, and Derek Stepan all scored in the third period to finish off the Isles.

Just to run down some of the achievements tonight:

  • The first two goals of the season for Matt Gilroy.
  • Two power play goals.
  • Mats Zuccarello gets his first NHL point with an assist on Stepan's goal.
  • The Rangers go over .500 at home, their record at MSG now stands at 9-8-2.
  • Rangers pound out 50 shots on goal for what seems like the first time in 100 years.
  • Another "big win" in what is starting to become a season full of them. The fun season continues.
  • Not enough great things can be said about beating the Islanders, especially when they were probably just starting to feel good about themselves.

Really impressed with MZA I knew about huis skill but the way he uses leverage is great. He don’t shy away from contact.

Being at This Game Was Awesome!!

Because the LIRR was out, the building was all Rangers fans, and despite the conditions, the place was pretty filled and loud. Also, the Garden treated fans to 20 % off all concession stands and 40% off the team store for braving the storm. And I sat behind MZA’s parents, who didn’t quite understand a lot of the yelling I was doing, but appreciated my “Zuke” cheers. And the dad got a lot of high fives when he got his assist. It was great!

it seemed on TV there was quite a few lower level seats empty, but I noticed that early in the game and never thought about it again. People could of just been late to the game.

Haha thanks. Yeah an employee came up and told them they were going to do a shot so I was surprised also. He even took all their names (his brother was there also) as I was assuming he was gonna pass it on to Sam and Joe. They seemed to really enjoy the game; I think the atmosphere of a Rangers/Islanders game in the Garden was unlike anything they had ever experienced before.

i was supposed to be at the game but ...

figures my luck the fn nj transit trains that were running fine all day with the exception of up to 15 minute delays, of course have to develop signal problems between newark and penn station. so service was suspended. time goes by as we slowly inch up to the newark stop. by the time we get to newark they tell us trains are slowly moving into penn station with 60-90 minute delays. at this point it is about 8:15. we were on the train since 5:20. so there was no point in even continuing on. we hopped off at newark, and hopped on the next train back home.
so last night really sucked considering that my wife bought these tix for my bday a month and a half ago, and i was looking forward to this game for that amout of time. wasted money on unused tix, didnt get my routine hot dog & beer, and missed 7 goal celebrations. Thank You NJ Transit !!!!!

what?

yeah, I know… the little things.

Great game by Gilroy. For some reason, ever since the Rangers acquired him, he’s been one of my favorite players on the team. And I’m not saying this just because he had a great game, but I don’t want to see him go. I’ve always been disappointed to not see him in the lineup. Glad to see others liking Gilroy on here too. Everyone hated him for the longest time, and I never understood.

I was at this game as well, and it was a great job by Rangers fans (and even a few Islanders fans) to brave the elements and show up for an asskicking (though not until the 2nd half of the game).

Based on two games, I see no reason why MZA should be sent down, with Todd White having done nothing for the club. He clearly belongs and will only get better. My only worry is since he’s new he’ll feel like he has to pass off every time, when he has a great shot and shouldn’t hesitate to fire away.

Great job – we are beating the teams we should beat and good things are happening. What a difference a year makes. Now on to NJ for more carnage.

It was nice there tonight. cheaper beer and gear >appreciation for showing true “fan” grit in getting to the game in this shitass blizzard. Apparently even the Islanders’ bus got stuck, and, I don’t know where Y’ALL are, but it ’s still a freakin mess in Brooklyn. MTA buses abandoned in drifts, cop cars spinning out and stuck, sanitation crews screwed because some dumb fuck went out last night and got stuck and his car is in a monster drift so nothing gets plowed and the wind keeps blowing. If Gilroy continues to play like this then he’s not going anywhere. He and Sauer were the best D on the ice last night. I’m ok with MDZ sitting but he’s only 20 and they have to do it the right way to avoid crushing the kid’s confidence. MDZ will be an impact player at some point in the future. MZA should be here to stay. Dubi, Boyle, and Prust were just dominant last night.

by Richter1994 on Dec 28, 2010 7:09 AM EST reply actions

Gabby's goal

Did anyone else think that MZA deflected it in when they saw it? I looked at the replay this morning & I still think that MZA tipped it in.

by BriGuy27 on Dec 28, 2010 11:02 AM EST reply actions

Just looked at it

and I can’t be sure, but it certainly looked like Gabby’s shot was going right into the mid-section of Rolly, then as the puck gets to Zuc’s stick area it goes up and past the goalie. I suppose it could have deflected off of Rolly somehow. . .

Worst Rangers day: April 10, 1984

by Stepan the Ice! on Dec 28, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

it did deflect off of Rolli, it hit the side of his rib cage and moved up through his armpit. That goal was one hundred percent Gabby’s.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 28, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

prust is becoming one of my favorites rangers on this team. He does absolutely everything for this team and his line with boyle and fedex has been great. Pretty much the perfect thirdline. Now the rangers have a depth of good forwards but forwards who are probably 2nd to 3rd line players. Its time to package some of these guys in a deal. Same thing goes for defense, we have a plethora of defensemen and defensemen prospects. I would like sather to pull off a big move for a top end talent maybe not now but at the deadline or even during the off-season. I am beginning to think this team is close, a lot of players have stepped up and some players have showed they don’t have much of a future in ny (avery and rosi (mostly cuz of his contract)). If the rangers can now trim the fat off this team we can be really good.

I don’t think torts has gotten enough credit for this success of this team this year. He has done an excellent job with this team just because I don’t think the rangers are as talented as most teams in the nhl. He has also kept his word on playing the kids, and he hasn’t rushed them too much. I think a problem with the islanders is that they’re rushing their young talent and there is too much pressure on players like tavares. Also there’s no veteran presence to help him and the younger players through the season.

Avery simply isnt as effective if he doesn’t get under the oppenents skin without taking penalties. I dont see him resigning nor would I want him to, we have many prospects in the system that can come up and add more scoring or better grinding than Avery can offer. His best days as a Ranger are over.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 28, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

disagree...

but that’s what makes life interesting. I personally think he’s playing some of the best hockey of his career. Much smarter. He can contribute goals, but he has a different role now. The last thing we need him to do is to come out of the corners trying to be a sniper. Yea, if he does that he’ll get maybe 10 -15 goals a year instead of 8-10. As long as he’s making his teammates better, that’s what we want!

by voice22 on Dec 28, 2010 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

What does he do specifically that makes his teammates better? Other than the first week or so of the season he hasn’t done much, most of his pretty assists were in the first week or so.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 28, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

I got hooked on Gilroy after accidentally catching the third period of the 2009 Beanpot, where he danced around the sliding defender and fed Bonino with a perfect no-look pass. That’s one of those moves that leaves you thinking – you can’t teach that.

A week later Sather signed him, right after the first game of the Washington playoff series. I’ve been waiting since then to see this Matt Gilroy. Anyone notice he made a similar move last night in the third?

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

by SimpleManiac on Dec 28, 2010 11:43 AM EST reply actions

He's fun to watch offensively

The issue with him, and specifically in Tortorella’s eyes, has been whether he can play passable defense. It seems he’s shored up his responsibility some in his own end. He’s definitely played well enough defensively so far this season in small sample sizes.

by dar9898 on Dec 28, 2010 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

I’d take Gilroy over Del Zotto any day of the week.

Gilroy’s going down last year has helped his development, not crushed his ego as some have suggested. Del Zotto’s NOT going down to Hartford last year or this year has hindered his development.

The trajectories of these two players make my case for a strong farm club.

One thing I thought was Rozi had another sub par game with numerous turnovers that almost became costly. I think it would be a good idea to scratch Rozi in order to get Del Zotto back in since Gilroy should definitely stay on the roster for time being. what do you guys think.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 28, 2010 11:56 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Rozsival did have a ghastly turnover or two

as he’s prone to every once in a while. But in total he had a decent game. Just look at the scoring chances for and against when he was on the ice at George’s site: http://trackingthenyrangers.blogspot.com/ . He was +7 (10-3) at ES, second only to his partner for most of the game, Eminger, who was +8 (9-1).

Rozsival does commit glaring turnovers at times, but his play otherwise is perfectly useful.

by dar9898 on Dec 28, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

It would make more sense to scratch Eminger

Eminger’s been perfectly fine for what he’s supposed to be, a 7th defenseman. That’s more than I honestly thought he could be. He’s not the liability he was the first game or two of the season. But , with a total GVT (goals versus threshold) of 0.0, he’s basically the definition of a warm NHL body on defense. If anyone on defense should be scratched, it’s our true 7th defenseman.

by dar9898 on Dec 28, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

He also took his standard hooking penalty last night.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

by SimpleManiac on Dec 28, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I wouldn’t call his turnovers “numerous” last night. He had one really bad one, maybe 1-2 others that led to shots against. Him and Eminger were good for the most part yesterday though. At even strength, Rozsival was on ice for 18 SOG For, and only 4 against, Eminger 17-4.

Hard to kill anyone on the team yesterday when they thoroughly massacred the Isles. Only Frolov and Gilroy weren’t at least +5 in the shots for/against.

It's sooo funny...

to hear how many people are suddenly on the Gilroy bandwagon. 2 weeks ago he was trade bait, not going to be resigned in the off-season, a permanent fixture in the press box, etc., etc. etc and now he owns MDZ’s spot.

MDZ on the other hand was the 2nd coming of leach just couple of months ago and is now destined for Hartford and being treated like Poti.

2 games is too small a sample size guys. Give the 20 year old a break and don’t jump on the Gilroy bandwagon too fast. MDZ’s struggles are not the reason this team doesn’t compete for the cup.

by The Last Shall Become First on Dec 28, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

Not a bad problem to have...

right??? I think MZA signed a contract to play in the NHL & that’s where he’ll stay. However, off the top of my head, the only players I’d throw down to the AHL are Avery (since nobody will claim him on waivers if/when he comes back to NHL) & Boogard for the same reason as Avery. Throw in Todd White & you’ve got some wiggle room.

by BriGuy27 on Dec 28, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Avery

is a perfect fit for this team! if you start sending guys like Avery down and bring up more guys like Prospal, MZA (and I’m not really knocking either of them individually) our chemistry is right back to last year. Avery has been working his ass off all season…actually, starting in pre-season.

I’m glad MZA is working out and if he keeps this up he should stay, but we can’t start sending the grinders who give this club their identity down to the minors.

Big mistake.

d

by voice22 on Dec 28, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

MZA’s audition will last at least as long as Prospal is out, if not as long as Cally is hurt. A lot of things can change between now and then. He’s had 2 good games, and the team is playing excellent while Zuc is on the ice, but you still have another month to worry about whether he sticks.

If MZA sticks, Christensen will lose his spot to fit Prospal in. I’m not sure it’s the right move, but it’s the most likely one.

Boogaard becomes the giant question mark. With the team rolling 4 skill lines at this point, it’s tough to see where he fits.

But the team has been suffering so much in his absence

Lundqvist needs a MASH unit. Gaborik can barely skate anymore or flex his wrists from all of the shots he’s taken. And think of all of those enforcers that relentlessly beat up our skill players…

by dar9898 on Dec 28, 2010 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

I take the overall team toughness approach as opposed to one enforcer. I’m not playing Monday morning QB because I thought the BooBoo signing was a horrific one. You can’t be paying an NHL player $1.65M per to play 5 or less minutes and for the 3 teams he really needs to play against. You just can’t in the cap era. It’s a waste. I like the way the team is sticking up for each other so it doesn’t matter who is on the ice when the crap starts. BooBoo was almost always on the bench when things happened so what good was he? I am sorry he’s hurt though. I hope it’s not career-threatening.

by Richter1994 on Dec 28, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

If anything is Career threatening its his style of play thats dwindling down in the NHL, not his injuries lol.

by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 28, 2010 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

lol, he would have been great in the 70s but then again he gets hurt after every fight.

by Richter1994 on Dec 28, 2010 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’d like to see Booger go after Malone if he even LOOKS at Lundqvist again. Boyle went after him in the first period last time to keep him from pulling the goalie abuse clinic he put on in the first game.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I don’t think its a given that MZA isn’t going to be around when Prospal and Callahan are healthy. Even so, why break up the Boyle line and drop Stepan away from Gaborik. At least, put Prospal on the wing with Stepan and Gaborik. Drury is a 4th line center on this team (Boyle wins more faceoffs).

I’d prefer:

Dubi-AA-Cally
MZA-Stepan-Gaborik
Feds-Boyle-Prust
Avery-Drury-Frolov (Prospal)

No telling what Prospal will be when he comes back. The guy who played the 1st half of last year or the 2nd?

Against Tampa in OT, MZA, Stepan, Sauer were on (I think with Eminger) against the big guns. I was impressed by the “Non-Tom Rennyness” of that.

I had a “Torts will overuse Prospal” fudge factor.

by Richter1994 on Dec 28, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yes...

Prospal needs to prove himself when he gets back…lets work him in slowly. In the meantime, MZA, if he’s playing the way he is now, should stay as a swing player. This is what I like about Torts juggling lines. Everyone should know how to play with each other. Besides, the odds of all these players staying healthy until June is slim.

id take it easy with mza. hes played 2 games.

are we really willing to give him a spot over avery or christensen after 2 games?

seems like a knee jerk reaction to me.

i say yes just cuz he hasn’t looked out of place and he has contributed. Christensen and Avery are players that are limited and have shown to be very inconsistent. Why not give this young guy with loads of talent a lot of playing time. There will be times where MZA will look terrible out there and make mistakes but that understandable and im willing to do that to see what MZA has. We already know what avery and chistensen bring to the table.

by nutz_35 on Dec 28, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

This is really getting to be too much. The team is playing GREAT hockey and Christensen AND Avery have been core elements to that success. For the time being at least, they have earned their place on this roster. You mean to tell me that you are willing to sink a team momentum that has been three or four years in the making to give a rookie from Europe a chance to break into the lineup? Wipe the stardust out of your eyes! That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I don’t understand what these C and A have done to piss everyone off so badly. I really don’t. They are both responsible players. I think fantasy league hockey is a joke for people with WAY too much time on their hands. Sorry. I said it.

by voice22 on Dec 28, 2010 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

EC is very inconsistent and Avery is a not a coaching favorite so he will not be given the opportunity to be effective, making Avery useless on a game to game basis. That’s not Avery’s fault, that’s Torts’ fault for letting his personal feelings get in the way. MZA is skilled and he’s a top 6 on this team right now.

by Richter1994 on Dec 29, 2010 6:09 AM EST up reply actions

this is bullshit – I’m so tired of hearing how Tort’s has made Avery ineffective. There is literally zero evidence of that. In fact, it’s Torts who’s come out and said exactly how he wants Avery to play – which is exactly how we all want Avery to play.
Let’s not pretend that Avery does the work that guys like Prust, Boyle, Feds do.

by j-red on Dec 29, 2010 8:14 AM EST up reply actions

there have been plenty of media people (other than Brooks) that cover the Rangers that have said Avery is treated unfairly and to a different standard. Listen, as far as I’m concerned I want MZA in the line-up at the cost of EC, Avery, or whomever so doesn’t matter to me but there is a double standard with Avery which he probably earned.

by Richter1994 on Dec 29, 2010 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

Gotta work EC in there somewhere as well.

I totally forgot about EC! I guess that says a lot, but I’m not an EC hater. Don’t think MZA is ready to take his place just yet, that’s for sure…

guys lets cool down with mza alright? i like the kid, i love his game, and i hope he is here for a while.

but lets not slot him in the lineup over avery christensen and prospal. hes played 2 games for god sakes.

lets take it easy here alright?

I think people are excited because he seems to have so much natural talent, and we have a lot of guys that are really hard-working and that’s great but we need guys with a scoring and passing gift, and it’s been a rare commodity recently.
Based on the long interview that gongmallet posted in his Fanpost “The Kinder, Gentler Torts Indeed!”, I suspect he’s here to stay – it’s obvious Torts loves him.

We just beat the Islanders 7 to 2. We’ve beat the Capitals 7 zip. I can go down the line. This year we are lighting the bulb. It isn’t only how many goals you score, its how many goals you score versus how many goals you let in. Last I checked our club was a plus 18 on the season.

Avery is third on the team in Assists! I defy you to find another utility player at EC’s price who can slide up and down the lineup, move from center to wing and be a scoring threat late in a game when the grinders are resting their legs.

MZA might work out. So far, I’ll agree with you, he looks very promising and might stick. But lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

It has nothing to do with the play of Avery and Christensen (well it does, but indirectly).

The lineup we put in against the Isles was:

Dubi-AA-Drury
MZA-Stepan-Gaborik
Fed-Boyle-Prust
Avery-EC-Frolov

You have 2 players in Callahan and Prospal that are going to be guaranteed roster spots when they come back. I know there’s alot of argument about whether Prospal will need to play his way in, but because the team is playing so well, he won’t be back in the lineup until he is 100%. Make no mistake though, Prospal is resuming his role with Gaborik, in part, because Tortorella loves him, in part because it’s always about Gaborik. So two players in that lineup against the Isles are going to get scratched.

Now certainly, between now and then, MZA could flame out which frees up one spot, but the other spot is going to come down to one of the 4th liners. I personally don’t believe, with the way Frolov has played of late, that his roster spot will be in jeopardy, unless it’s a trade. That of course is just opinion, but he does have more goals and points than Avery or EC.

So if that is the case, one of Avery/Christensen is going to lose their place. The numbers game does not favor them. My guess is it will be Christensen first, then Avery if need be. It may not be pleasing, but guys like Stepan, Boyle, Prust, Fedotenko…guys who might’ve been on the bubble at the start of the year, have solidified their spots.

It doesn’t mean Avery/EC get exiled…they stay as healthy scratches, and if Stepan hits a wall, or Anisimov goes back in the dog house, or injuries happen, they come back in. As I said though, that’s where Boogaard becomes a giant question mark. If he gets healthy, does he take a healthy scratch spot (thus exiling a defenseman), or does another move happen. It will be interesting to see.

When you put it that way...

I see your point. But I still think that Avery has helped establish this team as one that is an utter pain in the a** to play against.

One big downside to Avery is the refs propensity to penalize him for . . . skating around.
