Rangers Recap: Road Warrior Rangers Stun Ottawa 5-3

After making a horrible pass from behind his own net that led to an Ottawa goal, Michael Sauer found redemption in the best possible way: by scoring his first NHL goal late in the third period to give the Rangers a 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators in a game that was as ugly as a hairless cat.

Ugly, poorly played, mistake-filled, pick your adjective. But on the bright side, the Rangers battled back, coming from behind three times in the game, and it was a game where very few Rangers had a strong performance.

Derek Stepan got things going for the Rangers, scoring just two minutes after Mike Fisher put Ottawa on the board. Jason Spezza then gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead in the opening minute of the second period, but Ruslan Fedetenko matched that just over a minute later to tie the game.

Fisher scored his second of the game in the third period, but Erik Christensen tied it, Sauer put the Rangers ahead for the first time in the game, and Brandon Dubinsky put the Sens to bed with an empty netter.

The Rangers are now 11-4-1 on the road, maybe they need to go back to wearing white at home.

Final Thoughts:

  • I never thought I would say this, but I sure hope Steve Eminger is ok.
  • Congratulations on your first NHL goal Sauer, but that pass from behind your own net is ridiculous. Hockey 101 type stuff.
  • Henrik getting run, nothing called, same old story.
  • Derek Boogaard: another fight, another injury. I think from now on I am calling him Donald Boogaard, or Derek Brashgaard.
  • We hit the magic number of 1000 comments in the game thread last night, great job guys, and "Name That Clown" is becoming a popular game within the game, thanks Dig Deep!
  • Ugly, but we'll take it. Winning ugly beats losing pretty any day.

That assist Sauer had on the Ott goal was no big deal. It was dumb but just not on the same page with Eminger. This kid is great.

I like dark sweaters at home (the Rangers dark jersey is one of the oldest jerseys in the history of the league) but it looks like the team should maybe just wear the away whites as often as possible.

well at least the fact he scored can stem the retarded calls for him to be benched that happened when he turned it over.

Wow Staal with 30:30 minutes of ice time which is a seaon high. Despite AA being on the second line he was only on the ice for just over 11 minutes while Callahan and Dubi were on the ice for over 18.

Not making sense I missed some of the game, did he deserve it take a stupid penalty, not back check, look lazy on the ice? and reason you saw to merit a demotion?

Imagine on the ice while your making split second decisions reacting to the play around you while you have in the back of your head “gee if I take a chance and am wrong or if I slip up or do something bad I am going to the 4th line” IDK if he def has this thought process yet but if these semi demotions keep happening it wouldn’t surprise me.

Yes Arty might not have got the minutes he wanted but Torts did have him out there with Cally and Dubi in the final minute of a 1 goal game.

I’m thinking Arty might be tired. I don’t think his demotion to less minutes has to do with poor play.

Man, that wasn’t an ugly win, that was filthy, but we’ll take it.
If that’s what the PP looks like after three days of practice, they should hold no more practices.
Everyone was pointing to November as the tough month because of so many games, but actually the team plays better when they play a lot, including Hank. I think this month will be tougher due to the quality of opponents we now face. Next 5 games are brutal. I’d take 5 out of a possible 10 points.

I’ve been a big proponent of bringing Boogie in all along. He is one of the most feared guys in the NHL. BUT, he has certainly not lived up to the reputation yet. Guys are still running Hank (I noticed that the Sens didn’t do it until Boogie was in the locker room last night though.) Carkner’s punch in the back of the head was bush league. Hopefully Boogie evens its up next game. Boogie did pop him pretty good 2-3 times.

Ugly game, but a good win.

I was watching the CJB-St.L game during the Ranger intermissions. The Rangers really should win that game. Columbus is really struggling and their PP is even worse than the Rangers.

by NTB on Dec 9, 2010 11:09 PM EST reply actions

how is that possible. the rangers have to have the most frustrating PP of all NHL teams (i dont consider the icelanders an NHL team). The PP goal tonight was more of a defensive breakdown than anything.

That being said, 3 or 4 PP goals will be scored between the 2 teams Sat night

by nyrangerfan521 on Dec 9, 2010 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Ha. You’re probably right. The PPs for each team will look like Detroit now.

Columbus had a 5-3 for 1:45 and did absolutely nothing with it, maybe one shot on goal and not even a good one. The passing was terrible and everyone was stationary. Even the Columbus announcers were saying how awful it was.

by NTB on Dec 9, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

i guess for some reason teams with one superstar player tend to rely on him too much on the PP and thats the reason it suffers, Gabby for the Rangers and Nash for CBJ

A “Name That Clown” shout-out? Haha. Epic. Thanks Jim.

Filthy win, take the two points and run. Good stuff from Stepan, Prust, and Hank tonight. Gaborik cashes in with two assists, F-tank with a goal on the top line, Stepan with a goal, Sauer a powerplay goal off a great pass by Prust.

Hope Eminger and Boogaard are alright.

I hope to see MDZ in the next game, Gilroy was exceptionally quiet tonight. I hardly noticed him. (13:07 ice time)

The Rangers were lucky to win last night. The Ranger problem is that their players lack anticipation of where the play is going. They react very well but not fast enough to stop many plays. Natural reactions separate the true stars from what the Rangers put on the ice

“Derek Boogaard: another fight, another injury. I think from now on I am calling him Donald Boogaard, or Derek Brashgaard.”

While it would be nice if Boogey could stay healthy, he does more to help the Rangers in his 2 minutes of playing time in any given game than Brashear did in his entire time with the Rangers.
