Flyers at Flames "Please Olli don't get hurt tonight" Open Game Thread
I figured since we've been talking about it all day, those of ice with Center Ice will be tuned in to the game tonight, might as well keep each other amused as we pray for Olli Jokinen's continued good health.

do you think this trade means we are going to be buyers at the dealine if this does in fact go thru?
I honestly just think its about shedding a little salary, and putting themselves in a better position financially, be it for another deal or the off season

If this does go through I think it’s a shrewd move by Sather. You dump long term salary and you take a flyer on a really talented guy. If he doesn’t work you still have time to flip him at the deadline to a contender for a pick (maybe get the 3rd rounder we wasted on Boyle back). If it does work and they show some sustained signs of life, maybe you change your thinking a little. Just a VERY little. Slats demonstarted last year that he is capable of getting able bodies with expiring deals.

from hendricks hockey:
Calgary is still a significant player in the Kovalchuk sweepstakes. Calgary is working hard to clear the room to add Kovalchuk. They feel if they can clear the room now they will make a huge offer before the deadline and if not they can still get him on the UFA market. The Rangers and Kings have also made offers for Kovalchuk but it appears the Rangers offer was very low. If Atlanta would allow serious teams to talk to Kovalchuk and his agent they would have much bigger offers coming in. The Kings seem to be putting in a very good offer, we will see what happen’s.

I think he can’t leave on this note. I can see how he can, but I’m feeling he’ll stay to play the full two years of the contract.

nah. I think he’ll just come and play from the get-go.
But I have this strange feeling that this was the year to win it. And we should be there, considering how we horrifically outplayed the Saints… and now it’ll be a while before we get another opportunity.

ah.
on the upside, all the core players are returning, so in theory, they could very well return to the Championship game.

i did this math last night but now it is official i will do it again.
Kot’s 3 mil + Staal’s current deal .827 = Staal new Salary
13/50 get it signed now.
If Staal can get signed for cheaper money, then why not sign him for cheaper money?
"Jaromir Jagr.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
- Sam Rosen
"Marian Gaborik.... it's a POWER PLAY GOAL!"
-Sam Rosen
i think that is more than fair if he will basically sign a lifetime deal.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 12:54 AM EST up reply actions
think about it. dion and jay bo both get 6.5 and staal has just as many points and we all know he is much better defensively.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 12:56 AM EST up reply actions
no way he signs that long for under 3 mil. cam barker got over 3 mil a year for 3 years.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 12:59 AM EST up reply actions
lets say u do 3/10…then he gets a new deal in 3 years as a 26 year old top flight d-man? u think he signs for less than 4-5 mil a year?
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:01 AM EST up reply actions
that would be about right, but we don’t have rozy then. so we can afford it.
by WalkerNYRanger on Feb 2, 2010 1:03 AM EST up reply actions
so lets say 3-10 + 5-22.5…u see how this works in the cap era? now u have paid 8/32.5 and ending up spending more cap space and more salary that way
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:04 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, i liked your deal. I just don’t see a guy that young signing a 13 yr deal. I’d love it if happened though.
by WalkerNYRanger on Feb 2, 2010 1:06 AM EST up reply actions
his was 13/72 but staal isnt the same offensive player.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:07 AM EST up reply actions
If we spend that much next year though, that would probably Girardi is gone. That would be great to lock staal down though.
by WalkerNYRanger on Feb 2, 2010 1:09 AM EST up reply actions
3.8 mil is 500K more than ur 3/10 deal.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:09 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, either way Girardi is gone. That’s a huge raise though from his entry level contract. I just hope Sather doesn’t low ball him and he pulls a dubi.
by WalkerNYRanger on Feb 2, 2010 1:11 AM EST up reply actions
its not actually for top players at their positions. Toews and Kane got theirs off entry levels, Kessel just got his on an entry level
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:13 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, plus Staal will be worth even more when we can afford to pair him with another decent D-man.
by WalkerNYRanger on Feb 2, 2010 1:16 AM EST up reply actions
which is why u lock him up early and cheaper with the lure of guaranteed money
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:18 AM EST up reply actions
also they have higgins 2.5 mil, prospal 1.1 and girardi’s 1.55 to sign girardi back and whatever other moves
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:12 AM EST up reply actions
yes i know higgins 2.25 is gone but i used kots 3 mil (higgy + kots) is exactly olli 5.25
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:14 AM EST up reply actions
just saying in the cap era, when u go short and cheap it costs u more cap space later. we already did that with dubi and cally and will end up paying more in a year than if we had gone 3-4 years this past summer is my point.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:06 AM EST up reply actions
Brooks:Acquisition of Prust, 2d in NHL with 18 fights, may spell doom for either Voros or Brashear....or both.

by nyrangersfan128 on Feb 2, 2010 12:52 AM EST reply actions
Both, or keep voros and it’s over for boyle. but boyle is way better on the PK.

TSN: While it took some time, in the end the Flames finally got their men as Calgary has shipped forwards Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust to the New York Rangers in exchange for forwards Ales Kotalik and Chris Higgins.
I llike how they said ‘their’ men, as if the package of Kotalik and Higgins would at all desirable.
you know, Calgary fans aren’t dumb. I think they’re right in saying there has to be another deal in the works. It really makes more sense that way.

Calgary management must be on crack. I don’t think any of these recent trades for them have resulted in a net advantage. They looked awful tonight. Not that I care!
Great move for us, and in a way, I’m more excited about Prust than Jokinen. A little more toughness is what we need.
And no more watching Kotalik and Higgins MISS THE NET.
yea, as sellers if there is any logic involved.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 2, 2010 1:09 AM EST up reply actions
A post by a Flames fan explains it all lol
Flames fans breathe a sigh of relief now that Joker’s unproductiveness and massive contract are gone, but the faces of relief quickly change to faces of disgust at the mediocrity of Kotalik and the fact that they just got an American Joker in Higgins and he’s sticking around for 2 more seasons.
I realize I`ll be crucified by my fellow Canuck fans for saying this, but I really like Nigel Dawes. Beautiful hands and great speed, awesome pick up for Calgary management, do you guys think Sutter will take Bernier and his stone hands for him?
PLEASE. WATCHING HIM TRY TO STICKHANDLE IS LIKE WATCHING JOHN TRAVOLTA ACCIDENTALLY SHOOT MARVIN IN THE FACE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Jokinen and Prust just walked upstairs to speak to management. They have just been informed.
I’m guessing they are going to play today.
