Olympic Trade Deadline Open Thread
3 PM this afternoon is the Olympic trade deadline. No players can be moved after today until after the Olympics. We'll keep this thread open until later on today and keep it updated as best as we can.
Unfortunately, I will be at a business seminar all day today, and will probably have no idea what's going on until later in the day. Although Joe and NIck usually keep me up to date via text.
Have at it guys, but go easy on the rumors from you-know-who.

I know not Rangers or trade related but
Cheechoo on waivers rofl, talk about a MAJOR fall from grace
ARGH!
Just the type of reclamation project Darth Sather would go after….“he just needs a change of scenery”.
Yeah, like Kotalik.
Don’t do it Slats!

i dont think he will on waivers but i bet he might on re-entry.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 12, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions
isnt he a RFA after this year..
maybe not at 3.5 but at 1.75… we could pick him up and maybe he clicks with someone on our team and we resign him for a small price after this season or maybe he doesnt and we let him go
LETS GO RANGERS!!!! SECTION 405!!!!!
What about?
Ok so Brashear cleared waivers…
Anyone think it would be in the Rangers interest to acquire Brad May (just placed on waivers from DET)?
I know we now have Prust but he’s more of a middle weight. I always liked May and thought he could add toughness to this team.
Your thoughts?
moves today
2 hours left, i wonder if slates can do something. I wonder how much having an away game tonight messes with things.
WAIVE REDDEN
anybody read florida's letter
pretty much saying we suck everyone must go where gonna tank and try the pittsburgh approach to win a cup
if they get horton out of florida then i dont need the letter, lol.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 12, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions
to answer why though it is simple. 1. the long time gm who ran florida in the ground left last year so the new guy can write the letter starting over. 2. it’s florida and not ny.

Oh my
Read coppernblue on SBN. Strudwick gets their 20th star like every game. He’s had an absolutely abysmal year.

Drury & Rozsival for Penner & Souray straight up!
by Mike_from_NNJ on Feb 12, 2010 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
how many times does it need to be repeated that drury has a full No Movement Clause so putting him in trades or talking about sending him down to hartford is pointless?
by Michael Gleich on Feb 12, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions
I was being facetious. Sheeesh. Like Edmonton would do it even if Drury waived his NMC.

also with a lot of teams still “thinking” they are in the hunt not a whole lot of sellers out there. could change w the 4 days of games after the freeze and before the deadline. also this mini deadline could have some who move (especially close to the freeze) and cause their counterparts to have to respond after the olympics

i think if the rangers really want horton
they are gonna wait till march 3rd to see how this time off helps heal his leg
my guess says if sexton is really serious as he sounds like he is in this nuclear approach horton and many others might get moved today. as for the leg, it was a clean break that didnt require any surgery so it is not a question mark, plus as i have said before a move for horton while helpful this year is about the future.

since this is an open thread we brought up potter for nagging injuries but sent him down yesterday while staal missed practice sick, staal didnt skate this morning but is going to play thru the stomach ailment tonight. yea, that makes sense.
also from the quotes after practice doesnt seem like gabby will or should play tonight.
if they can get a second round pick for Dominic Moore...
we can surely get a first round pick for Prospal
how about u trade him and bring him back in the offseason?
but no deal over 1 year because he will be 35.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 12, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions
i started this discussion in the other thread.
moore got a 2nd
cullen got a 2nd and a solid young d-man
whitney is supposedly going to net a 1 or 2
ponikarovsky is going to get a 2
yet we are bagging a chance to get at least a 2 for prospal

We could easily get an early 2nd/4th, or a 25+ overall 1st for Prospal. He seems to be a Modano-type guy who will be able to play into his early 40s.

I say small cap hit… I mean that he will be a bargain at the production he will be putting out in say 2012-13. Hes still young. If he was 30 Id say no way. But I do see what you mean with the concussion history.
In 94 I thought i could die in peace... Now I watch a ranger game and just want to die.

Here’s a TSN Fan post about Edmonton’s current situation, and how management ran their team into the ground…sound familiar?
It is encouraging to see that Katz is focused on drafting and development. I expect for someone who has been so successful in business the current situation is unacceptable. But the Oilers are going to have to shed some dead weight and cap space if they intend to rebuild this team. Hopefully in 2 years we’ll have a couple good young players and the cap space to go after someone big. Lowe messed this team up by signing mediocre players to rich contracts, and his legacy will need to be cleaned up before we move forward.

Rangers are 2-8-0 in last 10, against similar competition they’ll be facing from here on out.
The “worst” team point wise on the remaining 22 games schedule is Toronto – but that’s not representative of how they’ve been playing of late (esp. since the Phaneuf move). They are a much better team at this juncture.
If they maintain “pace” and go 5-17-0, that means a 69 point finish. If Toronto plays .500 hockey and goes 11-11-0, they end up with 71 points.
Finishing anywhere from 3rd worst to 7th worst is absolutely possible.

On the bright side
A line of Shelley-Prust-Voros would give our PK plenty of work.

Alternatively
This is a really elaborate plan to go kick the shit out of Carcillo.

maybe this is the tank move…shelley beats up gabby, staalal and hank in practice so they cant play and we lose.
as long as he kicks Sather in the eye-ball when he's done
its perfect
Bye, AP :(

I think I’m started to understand Sather’s grand plan, and it’s AWESOME!
We pick up as many dead-weight goons as we can, and every upcoming game we dress 2 of them. Anytime we play a team above us in the standings, 1 goon takes out their goalie, the other goes after their best player. Figure by the time the playoffs roll around we’ll have the best goalie and forward in the East!
Though I really think Sather finally found Redden’s stash of coke and has been raiding it since yesterday afternoon. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
I’m so fed up with slats getting rid of picks for old ass benders..he has brought disgrace on this once glorified club
by inHANKweTruST on Feb 12, 2010 3:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions
so this is sathers logic… Colton wants too much money so forget him lets get brashear a multi year contract for an over35 player…crap that didnt work out ..oooo Torts wanted better conditioned players… feb 12… okay lets get rid of a first round pick for jody shelley. WTF
by louielounz1 on Feb 12, 2010 3:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

by Michael Gleich on Feb 12, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

DING DING DING!!
We have a winner, folks.

So you’re saying teams don’t typically spend $3.75m of their cap on enforcers?

Sorry….$5.75 if you want to count good ol #16.

i want to see a line of prust – voros- shelley play 20 min now so we can really tank. how about some kovalev 8 min shifts.
top 6 forwards rest of the year
voros-shelley-prust
brash-boyle-aves

Call up Didiomete, Owens and Byers while you’re at it.

See....
that’s the rub.
If you want a no offense/just enforcer on the team for 22 games, just call up Didiomete.
If he sucks so bad, or gets suspended, call up Byers.
Why give up even a 6th round pick for a 34 y.o.
Oh – wait. Maybe the #NYR are being designated as the official NHL Pre-Retirement Home.
AAaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh….

I’m not convinced either Torts or Sather is aware they have an AHL team.
They’ve been trading Johnson and Zaba back and forth to Hartford thinking the Whalers are still there.

TSNBobMcKenzie
NYR gave up sixth rounder in 2011 for Shelley. Become a 5th rounder if NYR re-sign Shelley.
at least it isnt a pick this year…rule is a pick a year away is like a round lower, so basically a 7th.
watch him sign a 3 year 6 mil deal anow.

LOL, the “how stupid is Sather” clause. Awesome.

ive figured it out…torts didnt like the uneven line numbers so now he has a full line of scratches
brash-voros-shelley can sit as a trio and watch.
Or....
We sit Redden, Girardi and Rozsival.
Make MDZ-Gilroy-Staal a line.
And just roll 6 forward lines and constantly play 5 on 3. Half the team will be in the box anyway, so they’ll get used to it.

AGrossRecord Right now, the #NYRangers have Shelley, Prust, Brashear and Voros on their roster and a real need to upgrade on defense.
i think we need someone to score..
both would be fantastic.
Yet…none would be good too.
Bye, AP :(

love Shelley
Great move, never hurts to have a true top enforcer to protect your team, the only issue is getting the coach to give him ice time regardless of the situation. Enforcers cannot enforce when they don’t dress or hit the ice. Shelley has been a top enforcer for a long time and can handle getting regular shifts. IF they use him, its a great acquisition.

Sather...
Why won’t this guy talk to us? I know you all hate him, but I’d appreciate it if he gave some kind of press conference…or at least a release statement or something.
Hey, I'm happy
We’re going to lose tonight and get closer to a top pick.
