Rangers Analysis: Gaborik Speaks to NHL.com after Victory over Sweden
NHL.com has a nice article about Marian Gaborik, answering questions about Slovokia's win over Sweden. Here are the highlights, click this link to go to the full story:
Marian Gaborik cracked a big smile because now he has some bragging rights over Henrik Lundqvist, his teammate back home in New York.
Gaborik got Slovakia going Wednesday night by scoring the first goal of the game and then he chipped in everywhere else to help his national team earn its biggest win ever.
The Slovaks took down Sweden, the defending gold medalists, in the nightcap at Canada Hockey Place behind a strong effort in net by Jaroslav Halak (26 saves), a three-point game from veteran Pavol Demitra, and a winning goal off of Tomas Kopecky's stick.
When it was over, Gaborik met the media to discuss the game and how in the world Slovakia is going to slay their next superpower opponent, Canada.
Q: Was this the perfect game you had to play in order to beat Sweden?
Gaborik: It's a very important game and we did everything we were talking about before the game. There was a system, being disciplined, being on the puck and wining the battles. We did all of that and Halak was great in net and, you know, I'm proud of these guys.
Q: Now you have the big challenge, but with one game, are you thinking you never know what can happen?
Gaborik: Yeah. I mean, now we have to have a good rest. We have to enjoy the emotions and get back at it in a couple of days.
Q: Are you surprised, shocked at all?
Gaborik: Not really. The way we came out and the way we played all 60 minutes -- even though we had a two-goal lead and they tied it up very quick -- I'm not surprised. I'm very happy and this was an unbelievable game from everybody.

I’m wondering if it would make sense to offer Pavol Demitra a 1 year deal in the off-season. He’ll be a UFA, and is coming off a 2 yr/$2mm per deal. Would he want the opportunity to reunite with Marion Gaborik?
During this tournament – he’s surely shown that he still has the ability to play at the highest level.

I’d say no just because he’ll be 36 early next season, and looking at his games played, he seems to miss 10-20 games a season consistently. The Rangers have too much history signing guys for too much money on the decline in their careers.
I’d rather go younger. But I haven’t looked at the upcoming UFA list, not sure what choices are out there.
Halak
Separately – Halak continues his fine play and adds fuel to the “who’s the top keeper in Montreal” fire. Good for him.

I think it’s been decided who the best keeper in MTL is. Mtl’s dilemma is that Price is a Canadian (everybody wants themselves Roy2), and could possibly have more upside than Halak. But Halak is better, and I think the international play (these Olympics and he’s also competed in World Cups) will only further his career and experience (he’s only 24). Price’s chances of sniffing international play with Luongo and Fleury around are zilch.
Well lets just say whoever gets a Montreal goalie at the deadline is getting a pretty good one.

agreed. I’ve always been a fan of Halak, he plays consistently, putting up good stats even though he makes 40+ saves a game behind Montreal. Price has moderately better upside, but tends to be streaky… When he’s on he’s one of the best in the league, but when he’s off, he makes Valiquette look like a Vezina finalist.
