NHL News: Atlanta Thrashers trade Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey Devils

Photo

More photos » David Zalubowski - ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ranger fans can cross another one off the wish list......for now.

Ilya Kovalchuk, who has been a focal point of many of the discussions here on Blueshirt Banter, was traded tonight to the New Jersey Devils, who shipped John Oduya, forwards Niclas Bergfors and Patrice Cormier and the Devils first round pick in 2010 back to Atlanta.

Kovalchuk will be a free agent at the end of the season, and based on the fact that the Devils didn't give up much to get him seems to point to this being a rental for New Jersey, which means the Rangers could still have a shot at him come July 1st, providing they can free up the cap space.

I can't say I am too upset about the deal, I really didn't want to see the Rangers do something dumb to get him with no guarantee in signing him, and now if they want him, they can get him without sacrificing a piece of the future.

As far as how the Devils improving effects the Rangers, well, honestly, it doesn't. Kovalchuk on the Devils isn't going to change the fact that the Rangers can't score more than two goals most nights

In the meantime, Ilya will be issued his Devils jersey and bulletproof vest for home games.

no i meant for everyone else who actually has a shot in the division…

well, the defending SC champs (pens) are in the Atlantic, and playing very well. S Kovalchuk will (should) greatly improve the Devils offense, but I think you’re going to see a lot of people assuming the Devils are going to waltz to the SC finals – and there a bunch of teams that will be in contending position.

Wave the flag

Not that I wanted the Rangers to morgage the farm for Kovalchuk, but now that he has been traded to NJ, and with the way the Rangers blew it Thursday night, the playoffs are only a dream. Fire Sather and have Mess or whomever gets the job trade off the worthless and start building for 2010/11.

In the meantime, Ilya will be issued his .... bulletproof vest for home games.

That’s epic.

Waddell knew Kovalchuk was on the way out, and had no choice. I’m just glad he won’t be wearing a Rangers jersey this season. One step closer to tanking for Seguin :)

Explain the bulletpoo vest comment

is this a Jersey slam or am i missing something more sinister……:)

The Pru Center is in Newark

and Newark, Nj has rotated wtih detroit, baltimore, and LA as the most dangerous cities in the US…im pretty sure the cops are using a different classifying procedure for homicides which in turn lowers the actual number…my father was born there and i lived in the adjacent town….there are a few nice spots, but just as many dangerous and vile places! :)

by NjRanger4 on Feb 5, 2010 12:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That and it could be misconstrued that rival fans cough might take shots at him… but who needs bullets? He’s Russian… run him like teams run Anisimov night in night out.

by Kritikal on Feb 5, 2010 10:03 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and even like someone else had posted a couple weeks back about Kovalchuk and the rangers…he wouldn’t fit in here to be totally honest..hes lazy, he doesn’t hustle back, hes great player/goal scorer, but his biggest impact is in the offensive zone, and as much as the rangers need that, they need a player that can be all over the ice…ie gaborik

but they also need defensemen that dont suck..ie Rozi and Redden..i say we trade both of them to buffalo for tyler meyers, solve 4 problems with one trade, meyers can skate, score and defend. all of which rozi and redden cant do..

by LIrangersfan on Feb 4, 2010 9:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yea because buffalo is itching to give up their leading calder canidate for two massive black holes of roster fodder

i didnt say it would make sense for them, just said that it would be a sather thing to do

Kovalchuk is money hungry. I’m glad we don’t have him. We already have Gaborik, now we need more support players to score 20-30 goals.

by nwahs s on Feb 4, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kovalchuk isn't really money hungry,

…he just really really needed an excuse to GTFO of Atlanta. I bet he’ll sign for 8-9M a year… especially a front loaded contract where the cap hit is ~8-8.25M

by Kritikal on Feb 4, 2010 10:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

they also got anssi salmella a d-man from the thrashers

but who cares.. we have no chance anyway and he will only be there for 2-3 months.. big deal and he will be gone so im fine with it

LETS GO RANGERS!!!! SECTION 405!!!!!

by kiop900 on Feb 4, 2010 9:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

plus the caps, sabres and pens in the east are still better then the devils

and the hawks and sharks in the west are way better to so i dont think it really makes a difference cause it should be caps or pens versus the hawks in the finals

LETS GO RANGERS!!!! SECTION 405!!!!!

by kiop900 on Feb 4, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

what i dont get is...

Atl could have gotten sooooo much more for him then an under-performing roster rookie, an arguable 2 or 3 d-man, a suspended prospect and a 1st rounder

La offered up Frolov and Purcell I believe

by b4mv01 on Feb 4, 2010 10:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

this was an awful deal by waddell especially when i wake up to that brooks article this morning talking about a package like staal, dubi, grachev and a 1 and end it with the devs getting him and a d-man for a mediocre d-man, a rookie, a convict and a 1 and swapping 2’s

by mleetch352 on Feb 4, 2010 10:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

mistake # 1: believing Larry Brooks rumors.

the thrashers didnt let anyone talk to Kovalchuk before the trade, if those stories are true. If thats the case, you’re really taking a chance on a rental. If thats the case, Im not giving up potential superstars. So Im guessing a lot of the rumors about what was being offered were highly inflated.

Awesome!

Now if we can keep him out of the box….

by av8trranger on Feb 4, 2010 10:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sadly a couple of his penalties were because the Washington players went around the Rangers D like they were frozen into the ice. He slashed Backstrom on a 2-1 and kept him from swatting a puck in, and hooked Poti who could’ve tied Redden’s skates together and still had time to get through him.

lets be happy that Sather did not give up anything. He seemed to go cheaply to NJ,
I thought they would have given up more. if that is the best they could do, i guess nobody was really in it at all. And Olie scores

by earthworm on Feb 4, 2010 10:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Waddell was hoping we’d up the ante and give up Callahan and Stepan… after Sather balked, he took the only offer left on the table. He knows Kovalchuk is as good as gone.

by Kritikal on Feb 5, 2010 10:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Even though they didn’t give up any stars, I think the Devils will probably regret this, esp. the 1st round pick. They are not going to win the Eastern Conference, even with him, though they have a really good shot of making the Conference Finals now. I doubt he resigns with them. I’m relieved the Rangers didn’t make this mistake. Play out the season, and spend the money we saved on Kotalik on a young, shutdown d-man, like Dan Hamhuis.

by Joe1969 on Feb 4, 2010 10:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

that depends

if kovy stays in the nhl (as opposed to running to the khl and tons of money), the devils could still potentially trade his rights to someone else, for a prospect, roster player, or draft pick(s). Not sure exactly what the going rate is for his rights, but they could potentially at least recoup some of what they gave up.

I hope Phaneuf takes Kovy’s head off tomorrow night in NJ. Devils suck.

by Joe1969 on Feb 4, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

So how much will the Devils need to re-up Kovy or is this a rental?

by louielounz1 on Feb 4, 2010 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I say wow on this, especially what was apparently offered by LA. Oduya is decent…but mostly a filler, Bergfors, who has some upside but…meh. Cormier should never be allowed to play professional hockey ever again…tainted goods IMO. And a 1st rounder that will most likely be in the low 20s.

If that’s all Waddell could get, then he’s either trying to land the NYR GM job or the other trade offers like those of LA were completely fake. Atl got jobbed.

by Caerid112 on Feb 5, 2010 12:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

that was the best offer they got? Oduya, picks, & the guy who just got suspended for being a cheapshot artist?
wow thats surprising

wadden...

was trying to lower his salary cap. look for atlanta to trade for a big salary no that they have room. plus he got a first round pick, not that jersey will finish too low to make it amazingly valuable. he probably didn’t want to pay for the decent players that were offered. that’s why i say we need to be willing to trade anyone on the squad other than gabby, hank, mdz. only three untouchables on this squad. perhaps ollie if he agrees to resign at a good price. so far i like what i see from him. size, good hockey sense. in the crease.

i’m actually not a sather hater. the big trouble hit us when jags went east. i like the youth he’s picked up and he’s scraping together the best he can in the salary cap era.

Other than Gaborik, Lundqvist, and Del Zotto, we need to keep Staal, Anisimov, Callahan, anything less is unacceptable. It’s a solid core. When Anisimov finally blossoms, he’ll be a legitimate 2nd line center (potentially first if Stepan takes too long to develop). Callahan is exactly what you’d want from a hockey player… if he doesn’t pan out in a year or two, then you can throw him on the trade block, his salary right now is negligible. Staal’s due for a nice raise, but he’s hands down our best defenseman on the ice. MDZ is the future. Gaborik is a beast, Lundqvist will provide us 5+ years of solid goaltending (minus the occasional softie).

Another move for Waddell to make is

Moving Max Afinogenov, because of his contract 800,000, his monster year… 44 points in 55 games and the fact that his deal is a one year in and out special. So since he’s unrestricted after this year. I think Waddell should look for another young prospect or early 2nd/late 1st for Max. Another reason i say this is because beware my ranger brethren, I think Slats could try and make a move for him before the deadline. Low contract, plus big numbers x 2 stupid GM’s = a scary deal that might occur in our favor or to our dismay. Remember i wrote this, it may be speculation but it might happen.

by louielounz1 on Feb 5, 2010 1:57 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

ive been following afinigenov since he was on buffallo, hes good, hes got skills…hes just maddddd inconsistent and maybe thats why he would be a good fit for the rangers…

by LIrangersfan on Feb 5, 2010 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i cant see how this deal will work for the Devils

Kovy is allergic to playing a two way game and thats all that jersey plays these days…sure it gives them some more fire power but overall i could really see this deal blowing up Lou’s face…big time

by 8kpower on Feb 5, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s gonna be a fun experiment. Yes they play a two-way game but the Dev’s have never had an offensive talent like Kovalchuk. As good as Parise is, he still trails Kovy in that department by an ok margin.

I highly doubt it will blow up, and even if they are slightly worse defensively, they’re going to be much more dangerous offensively.

They can now roll:

Parise-Zajac-Zubrus
Kovalchuk-Rolston-Clarkson
Elias-Niedermeyer-Langenbrunner
McAmmond-Pandolfo-Pelly

Or some variation thereof. That’s a pretty deep lineup.

Saturday

Can’t wait to be at the game Saturday night vs. the Devils….. are they going to be handing out complimentary razor blades at the door that say the usual “Thank You Fans!” on it

and honestly, when you have elias and langenbrunner on the 3rd line…you got a good team, as much as i hate them, they get depth..

What Next

The Devils are the Rangers biggest rivals, bigger than the Islanders, bigger than the Flyers and now they have one of the most feared weapons in all the NHL and they got him for nothing. You’re telling me there was no better offer on the table?

Sather pulled off something like this back in 2002 when he got Bure, who at the time was still one of the game’s top players, for Igor Ulanov and a couple of draft picks. And it worked out with Bure getting 50 points in 51 games but thanks to Curtis Brown, Bure was put on the shelf forever. We will never know what would have happened if Pavel Bure had stayed healthy and still breaks pains me that we didn’t get a chance to see more of the Russian Rocket

by The Last Shall Become First on Feb 5, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah but we have no chance this year

and he will only be there for 20 games and then he will be in russia so it doesnt matter really
