Rangers Recap: Five Goals Not Enough, Caps Top Rangers, 6-5
They came close, but not close enough to breaking the Capitals 12-game winning streak tonight at Madison Square Garden. In what could be called a goal-fest, a lot of positives can come out of this loss for the New York Rangers, including the fact that they were able to convert on the powerplay a total of four times. The crowd was into it, the players were into it, and the coaches were biting their nails. An overall entertaining night in New York.
Ryan Callahan opened up the scoring at 8:58 of the first period by deflecting newly acquired winger Olli Jokinen's wrister from the point past Theodore on the powerplay. That would be Callahan's fourteenth goal of the season and Jokinen's first point as a New York Ranger. Seven minutes after, Boyd Gordon slammed a rebound past Henrik Lundqvist to make it a 1-1 game, but it would not take long for the Blueshirts to respond. Exactly ten seconds following Gordon's tally, Marian Gaborik made a great pass to set-up Vinny Prospal who sent a shot to the back of the net, and gave the home team a 2-1 lead going into the intermission.
To open up the second period, it was Mike Knuble, who is heating up for the Capitals, who buried his 20th on the season and locked the game up at two. From that point on, both teams were being sent to the penalty box every few minutes, and as a result, there was four straight goals scored with the man advantage between the two clubs. Alex Ovechkin netted his 37th of the season to give Washington the advantage for the moment. However, Olli Jokinen scored his first in a Ranger sweater by depositing a loose puck in the slot into the net.
Ryan Callahan then made a superb play to feed Prospal in the crease for the tap-in, making it 4-3 in favor of New York. That would be Prospal's second of the game and 11th this year. The scoring continued, this time it was Brandon Dubinsky driving home a rebound in front. It was 5-3 Rangers until Ovechkin used his strength to fight through the Rangers defense and somehow manage to score one-handed on Lundqvist.
Tom Poti and Nicklas Backstrom scored back-to-back unanswered goals in the third period, and unfortunately five would be as far as the Blueshirts would be able to go. 6-5 was your final score and the high-flying Capitals leave MSG with their twelfth straight win, which to me, is almost unreal.

Henrik Lundqvist, despite allowing six goals, played fairly well in this game. He stopped tw0 breakaways, made several remarkable saves, and made 26 total saves. The defense in front of him could not stop the pinpoint passing by the Caps, which basically tore them apart. You cannot blame Hank for this loss. It was a high scoring tilt and he put up the best possible effort. Also, Henrik managed to pick up an assist tonight.
Olli Jokinen gave a strong effort in his Madison Square Garden debut, registering a goal and an assist. Watching him for two games now, I have started to pick up on his strengths, but need a bit more time for the weaknesses. Olli can sure put on the jets and also fights hard when battling for loose pucks. He has a quick release on his shots and finds ways to get them through to the net. I am loving the snarl he plays with, not putting up with anything from the opposition. That is something many of the players on this team lack, but Jokinen, along with that wild mustache, has got it.
Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal were on their game tonight, which means hard forechecking and responsible back-checking. They are truly a large part of the heart and soul of the Rangers, and in a track meet like this game, those are the kind of players that can potentially make a big difference. You can add Chris Drury to that list, as he blocked about seven shots, two of which were Ovechkin rockets.
Special teams made and broke the Rangers on this night. The powerplay was four for six in the game, but the penalty-kill could not contain the best squad when up a man. The Capitals are unstoppable with the way they move the puck around. It had New York spinning in circles in their own zone. As for the powerplay, the Blueshirts have to be hoping that they will be able to be consistent with it like they were tonight.
The Rangers next game is on Saturday, when they will host Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils as Madison Square Garden. If you have not already read, check out the below post, detailing the transaction that brought Kovalchuk to New Jersey, and Johnny Oduya along with others to Atlanta.

Confidence boost?
I’m not one to get carried away here, but our offense looks like its actually starting to pick it up.
Now if only our defense came up big, but they were playing the Caps so you can’t really complain too much.

By the way...
This was a seriously UNCOOL move by someone in the Rangers’ stands.

Pointing a laser pointed at the other team’s goalie is not funny.
From all counts, the Rangers played a good game last night; it just wasn’t enough against the Caps. Against any other team, I’d say I was sorry you lost.

Didn’t this happen in Vancouver a week or two ago?
Green laser pointers are no joke. They work at a different wavelength, and I believe are at a different class of laser than the red ones. A friend of mine shined one of these into his own eye for less than a second, and now he has to went specially-tinted glasses for the rest of his life. Why you’d want to permanently damage someone’s vision, opposition goalie or not, is just wrong.
agreed
and i dont think anyone on this site would disagree

it would have been a better game if the rangers could've matched the caps intensity 5 on 5
this seemed like the rangers capitalized (no pun intended) on their power play opportunities which im not upset about…but the lack of any discipline or defense on the rangers part led to this game getting way to one sided..also an Ovie goal with 13.7 seconds left in the second doesnt help things
I have to agree with this; four of the Rangers’ goals came on the power play, and it seems like 5-on-5, they couldn’t match the Caps at all. There’s a reason a lot of teams double-team Ovechkin when trying to defend against him, but they’re now finding that the Caps have too many offensive weapons in their arsenal for that to really be effective.

Defense Please
Is Torts blind or is he just an idiot, Take Rozsíval and Redden and send them to Hartford, they have got to be the two worst Rangers ever and are the key reasons why the Rangers are in the slump of a lifetime

Defending Rozsival...
He’s surprisingly been one of our better defensemen on the ice the past month or so, not that the statement’s saying much. Not many people can stop Ovechkin’s 230 (supposedly) pound frame when it comes flying in your direction. Rozsival played smart in playing the puck, he stopped a few of Ovechkin’s opportunities last night, just didn’t manage to stop that one.
And it looked like he tried to play the body, just didn’t get all of it, and I really don’t know how Lundqvist let that one in. Really lucky.
Ovechkin = Green Backs

It was just lucky
It hit him right in the stick, flipped up, and went over him with just enough juice to get in.

I have to agree with this...
That was a lucky shot. Ovechkin would have drawn a penalty anyway, and he was just flipping the puck in the right general direction; it went in. Lucky bounces happen on both ends of the ice. You love them when they go your way, hate them when they don’t, but it’s the nature of the beast.

Tough to compare
Anyone who can shut down Ovie all night long deserves the Norris Trophy. Rosival did hold his own, so kudos for that.
However….the whole idea everytime we play the Caps is to get Staal up against Ovechkin. Everytime he was on the ice, Staal was on the wrong side. There were at least 4 rushes where Ovechkin would streak down on his good side, and all he had to get around was Rosival.
Thats a coaching error if you ask me. Thanks TORTS!

Ovechkin's not an idiot
He went towards Rozy because he knows Rozy is the weaker player between the two. You can’t coach against that.

I agree on that point.
If there’s a ‘coaching error’ here – it’s having Staal paired with Rozsival.
But then what do you do? Pair him with dRedden? Ugh.
Gilroy might work – positional player with good speed – but not strong enough at this stage of his career to handle Ovechkin’s power with the body.
Del Zotto – same issue and not as good positionally.
You probably end up with last year’s pair – Girardi/Staal. Hmmm. Makes sense to me.
As for dRedden and Rozsival (or as some say: Blowsitall) heading to HFD – you all know where I stand on that. But that’s not Torts’ decision – it’s Sather’s along with Dolan. My bet is that won’t happen during this season. If we’re lucky, it’ll happen in the off season.

Yes, but you can put our better defender against Ovechkin's Better Side
My point is he was in a better shooting position on the left side b/c he’s a righty. If he was coming down the right side, that little one handed fluff shot never goes in.
Although it may not have made a difference, you need to try and get every edge possible.

I enjoy bashing Rosival as much as the next guy…. but but was a bad break. He was positioned pretty well and Ovechkin pushed the puck through. The guys big, fast and talented. Rosival had a decent night.
If these guys played consistant we’d be in the middle of the playoff race. Last night we played well. We had a new guy up front. Then again every night we have a new guy up front.
Called It...
I called big Caps third period. It’s been their calling card as of late.

All I have to say is that....
with every loss I am getting more and more excited about the draft :)
Last nights game
Sitting in the stands with my $9 beer it was painfully obvious last night that the Caps are that much better than the Rangers. The Rangers have no speed through the nuetral zone and zero, thats right zero, defensive intesity or toughness. The room that they gave Poti on his goal was a joke. Everything is a poke check. Nobody plays the body at all. Can we please get a tough defenseman in here. Send one of the wastes down to hartford and get someone up here that isnt afraid to hit someone. Girardi is in the group with redden and rozsival. Would someone please hit someone.
Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of my Ranger Team.
Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite player who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by trade, draft, or Sather fairy dust, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my fans expect me to move farther, faster and fight harder than any other team.
Never shall I fail my team mates. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be. One-hundred-percent and then some. Unless I am R+R.
Gallantly will I show the Blueshirt faithful I am a specially selected and well-trained professional player. My courtesy to the coaching staff, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
Energetically will I meet the enemies of my conference. I shall defeat them on the ice, for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave Marion Gaborik to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my team.
Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and win the game though I be the only one between OV and the net.
