Super Sunday Open Thread

Light hockey schedule today, with the Super Bowl being played tonight.

Penguins at Capitals at 12 PM on NBC

Penguins finally made it into D.C. at 2 AM this morning, due to the blizzard. Should be interesting to see what kind of legs the Pens have on about 5 hours sleep.

For the latest on the Pens, stop by Pensburgh and see our friends Frank and Hooks.

For more on the Caps, check out Japers Rink

Bruins at Canadiens at 3 PM.  A good old fashioned Original Six Matchup. NBC should be showing this game as well, make it a nice doubleheader before the Super Bowl, but that would be a good way of promoting the NHL, and that simply is not tolerated.

For coverage on the Bruins, you can check out Stanley Cup of Chowder, and for more on Les Habitants, you can visit Habs Eyes on the Prize.

Now, for the big game tonight, should be a great one. As a Giants fan, I have to keep it in the family and root for Peyton. Plus, I just don't want to see Shockey win.

My predicition: Colts 34 Saints 24. MVP: Peyton Manning. The Colts will get off to a slow start in this one, the Saints do have a better defense than they are given credit for, but Indy will turn it up in the second half.

For all your Super Bowl coverage, the Colts fans will be congregating at Stampede Blue, and the Who Dat Nation will be at Canal Street Chronicles. Both of those sites managers were credentialed for the game, which is huge for our network. I wish them the best, if I was credentialed for a Giants Super Bowl, it would be very hard for me to put away my fan hat.

Ok, so, all that being said, feel free to use this open thread for a great sports day. Chat about the hockey games, the football game, or anything else you guys want, just keep it clean.

Feel free to post your game and MVP predictions in the thread as well.

Also, that is an awesome picture of Hank I put up from last night's game.

I’ll start the conversation with Ranger talk:

A Devils fan on In Lou We Trust agreed with my assessment that it was a smart play by Avery to goad Kovalchuk, and the reader got grilled for it.

The feeling on the Devils site is that somehow the Rangers didn’t deserve to win, that somehow Hank “stole” the game. I really hate that term. If you have a great goalkeeper, his job is to keep the puck out of the net. Saying a goaltender “stole” a game just means he did what a team pays him to do.

Forgive me if I don’t apologize to Devil fans for the win.

using that logic...

how many games has Brodeur “stolen” over the years? Should the Devs give those wins back?

Super Bowl Prediction: last team with the ball wins.

im in dc with 30 inches of snow and no cable.. go figure the one game i cant watch we win, might have to cancel center ice so we can start a winning streak

bruins look like they might break their 10 game losing streak up 3-0 in montreal. rask got both starts this weekend and each of the last 3 games…is it time to start the tim thomas trade rumors?

by Michael Gleich on Feb 7, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Thomas has an NTC I think.

Not that it should stop rumors.

they werent smart giving him a 4 year deal on a career year, and obviously it was a great year since he won the vezina but he was already 34/35….is his deal an over 35 deal? that would make it harder to move even if he was willing. also im not saying he is the cause of them struggling cause they have no offense, but dealing him could rectify the offense some.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 7, 2010 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

I was wrong about the NTC I think, but it is an over 35 deal. So yeah, it’s a pretty tough one to move.

Or was I right?

Courtesy of ESPN:

Tim Thomas, winner of last year’s Vezina trophy, could be dealt near the trade deadline. Two league executives told the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch that Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has talked with teams needing goaltending help about Thomas.

Thomas is expendable because the Bruins feel Tuukka Rask is their future in goal, so the struggling 35-year-old might be heading elsewhere. Only problems are his no-trade clause and the three years left on his contract at $5 million per season.

Garrioch predicts the Blackhawks might be interested, if they’re willing to send Cristobal Huet to the minors to get his contract off the books. He says the Stars, Blues and Blue Jackets are also possible destinations.

So what will it cost? “A goalie like Thomas should be able to fetch a top-six forward, top-four blueliner and a solid backup goalie,” Garrioch writes.

i think that would classify as we were both right, but espn quoting garrioch who is right as often is ecklund probably makes it less likely.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 7, 2010 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

thomas apparently has a no-movement clause

They ended their 10 game losing strike. They won 3-0 in Montreal…Rask was quite good

did anyone see milbury trashing waddell on the kovy deal? i thought it was a bad deal but to see milbury who is responsible for some of the worst trades in history get on a high horse about a deal is ridiculous.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 7, 2010 5:54 PM EST reply actions

LOL

Coming from a guy that made 3 of the worst trades in history on the same day…

by Kritikal on Feb 8, 2010 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

Check this out for some epic lulz:

Olli Jokinen and Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.

Eric Brewer, Josh Green, 2000 2nd (Brad Winchester) to the Edmonton Oilers for Roman Hamrlik.

Kevin Weekes, the rights of Kristian Kudroc and a 2001 2nd (later traded to Phoenix – Matthew Spiller) to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2000 1st (Raffi Torres) 2000 4th (Vladimir Gorbunov), 2000 7th (Ryan Caldwell).

by Kritikal on Feb 8, 2010 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

and the next year had these gems:

23-Jun-01: Ottawa Senators traded Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and 1st round selection (Jason Spezza) in 2001.

24-Jun-01: Buffalo Sabres traded Michael Peca to the New York Islanders for Tim Connolly and Taylor Pyatt.

cant leave out:
02/06/98: Islanders trade D Bryan McCabe, C Todd Bertuzzi and a third-round draft pick(LW Jarkko Ruutu) to Vancouver for Trevor Linden.

They also deal C Travis Green, D Doug Houda and RW Tony Tuzzolino to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for RW Joe Sacco, C Mark Janssens and D J.J. Daigneault.

19-Dec-99: New York Islanders traded Felix Potvin, a 2nd round selection (later traded to New Jersey – Teemu Laine) in 2000 and a 3rd round selection (Thatcher Bell) in 2000 to the Vancouver Canucks for Kevin Weekes, Bill Muckalt and Dave Scatchard.

a whole 11 months after they gave up berard to get him.

by Michael Gleich on Feb 8, 2010 5:46 AM EST up reply actions

Best thing about the Linden Trade… Vancouver traded McCabe for a pretty high 1st and were able to draft the Sedin twins back to back. So, Vancouver pretty much got Bertuzzi, Ruutu, and Henrik Sedin for him… that’s epic win.

Bob McKenzie speculating that Bob Gainey might be stepping down as GM of the Habs. Any chance his buddy Sather will follow suit?
