Rangers News: Gaborik Injured at Practice

Stick salute to mjm1724 for breaking the story.

As Per Andrew Gross:

The report, via Rangers assistant GM/coach Jim Schoenfeld, is that Marian Gaborik suffered a laceration when Henrik Lundqvist's skate cut him as Gaborik jumped over the goalie in a breakaway drill. Gaborik went for stitches after leaving the ice and was not made available to the media.

Lundqvist confirmed his skate hit Gaborik’s right knee and, like most observers, he thought Gaborik was messing with him at first.

The Rangers said Gaborik remained at the Madison Square Garden Training Center to receive stitches and was not taken to a hospital for X-rays or an MRI.

"Right now, that’s all we think it is," said Schoenfeld, who ran today’s practice along with assistant coach Mike Sullivan with coach John Sullivan in Massachusetts attending the funeral of Toronto GM Brian Burke’s son. "It’s not like it’s a twist to the groin or the knee, it’s just a laceration."

However, Schoenfeld would not speculate as to whether Gaborik would be available tomorrow night against the Predators.

"It would be a guess," Schoenfeld said. "And I would rather not guess."

Gaborik, who has 35 goals and 34 assists and is on a five-game point streak (six goals, two assists) has missed just two games this season, Oct. 28-30. At the time, the Rangers said that injury was not related to the hip and groin issues that limited Gaborik to 17 games last season for the Minnesota Wild. Gaborik has played more than 65 games just once in the previous five seasons.

No further update on Gaborik is expected until tomorrow.

Before you all panic hear me out. This might actually be a good thing. Maybe this injury will be enough to keep Marian Gaborik out of the Olympics but not force him to miss more than a game or two for the Rangers! I might just be dreaming and as Gross said, we wont know more until tomorrow. Hopefully the news is good! Thoughts?

i dont see how if he plays before the break they will get away with telling him not to play in the olympics.

again

a ton of this is speculation. It was just a thought. Seems like they won’t know what he can do till tomorrow but whispers are that he will probably play so who knows

understood as far as the spec, but unless what comes down tomorrow is he is out all week for us i dont see how he wont play in the olympics. if it was like the WBC or even the U20 where a team could refuse that would be one thing, but they can’t which is why they have talked about not sending any for 2014.

by mleetch352 on Feb 9, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

that will be interesting come 2014

Imagine Ovechkin going against the NHL’s wishes and being suspened for the rest of the year

if no major injuries happen this year then they will let them go in 2014. if a star gets hurt in the olympics they will not let them go and all the russians will go anyway because it is in russia and if the nhl pisses and moans about it or suspends them some of them might just stay there if the KHL is still alive that far away.

by mleetch352 on Feb 9, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt the KHL will be around then

they alreadydon’t have the money to pay their players

Wait...

Hanks skate lacerated gabbys knee on a breakaway drill…where’s his shin pads? Or do they not wear full equipment during drills like this rather than practice

by klh2009 on Feb 9, 2010 2:03 PM EST via mobile reply actions

valid question, I'll try and see if i cant find something

by Joe Fortunato on Feb 9, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

well they’re saying Gabs jumped over him on a breakaway drill. Im thinkin Gabs deked, Hank sprawled and kicked up a pad to make the save and as he did he sliced Gabs on the knee.
Not that complicated.

Never said it was complicated...

Was jw where was his shin guards are… they shouldn’t be thin enough for a blade to slice through like that.. Unless they aren’t required to wear them for drill which would be retarded because things like this can ruin a season for a team

by klh2009 on Feb 9, 2010 7:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

a kicking motion can definitely lift the shin pad up and away, leaving the knee exposed. he’d never practice without protection that’s obvious. the Rangers wouldn’t allow it. pads need to allow room for flex so there are always weakly protected spots where pucks can leave wicked bruises and all you essentially have is the stocking.

by voice22 on Feb 9, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

hes cut on the knee from the official report I saw, not the shin.

Shin guards go all the way up passed the knee…but whatever it may be I was jw if he were wearing pads because that would be ridiculous but highly unlikely.

any thoughts on Jess’ article today about how BC is not really using Kreider correctly and that maybe a year in Junior’s to be used like Werek is being used would be better for his overall development, not to mention getting more acquainted with a longer season?

Based on the recent experiences

with certain ‘rumors’ and how people were treated, I no longer follow him on Twitter (no great loss there – Gross usually has the same stuff, sometimes faster) and I no longer go to Newsday’s site or his “blog”.

Screw ’em.

well so much for him making things right with the way he treated us

can’t say I’m surprised though. I was a little disappointed in Gross though, I figured he would have said somehting

Gross actually pretty much stayed “above” the fray – I went back and looked at the archives and I don’t have a problem with how he handled it.

But in this day and age, it’s page views and clicks that count – “eyeballs” – and I will not give Newsday mine.

He’ll be fine. If it was serious he would have gone for an MRI or something. My guess is its ontop of his knee above the pad. “It’s just a flesh wound” (Monty Python voice)

by crosbysucks on Feb 9, 2010 7:33 PM EST reply actions

Olympics

I winced at the headline, but a laceration could prove to be not quite as big a deal as a knee/hip injury. And in reality this injury comes right before the olympics which is good news for the Rangers (though I am sure Gabby would be heart-broken if he didn’t get to dress up for Slovakia).

If there ever was a time for him to take an injury it would be nowish or in the off season… or never of course, never would be a great time to take an injury too.

I hope his leg heals up ASAP, lord knows he is on fire lately and without Gabby we are going to struggle… even more than we are.
