Potential Rangers/Panthers Trade Discussion
I cannot stand Ecklund, but this is rumor season so lets go with the vague rumor he put out there concerning the Rangers and we like him can speculate on who is involved.
* The Rangers and Panthers are talking and it sounds like a mega deal. Right now the rumor isn't attached to any specific names, but sources are only saying "surprising names for both teams," and "A basic re-shuffle the deck deal." I could have names by 5pm if one source gets back to me.
Jim or Joe, call him back please, lol (certainly better than it being Larry Brooks as the source).
I go back to the idea i had a few weeks ago with Cally, Rozi, Girardi/Gilroy and a pick for McCabe and Horton. I know the love here for Cally and I love the way he plays hard every shift, but if a talent like Horton is on the table you have to pull the trigger. I have heard the Panthers in rumors the last couple days have Olesz, Booth and Horton all mentioned so they are definitely looking to do something and they need to make the playoffs after all the years out of it. Horton is out now w a broken leg but didnt need surgery and was said to miss a month starting about two weeks ago so he should be back at the end of the break or not long after. An added bonus to making a move on Horton now is that he has played significant time with Olli in the past as a winger or he could play center with gabby, but i would leave EC there for now. McCabe only has 1 year left on his deal and though a bigger cap hit than rozi virtually the same salary. McCabe also brings his big shot and some toughness to our d-core. What makes me nervous is the idea that "surprising names" are included though maybe cally is surprising since to this point Sather has refused to deal him. Have at it.
In other good news at least as i see it:
*The Bruins and Habs are looking at Souray...
No mention of the Rangers.

I've been on board with this since you first made it up.
I think it’s more like Olesz is more likely at this point, simply because Sather already made a move for one center and with the 6 centers we already have, I can’t see making a move for another one (unless it’s Dubinsky in the deal and not Callahan). I hate Olesz’s deal though, 4 more years @3.1 for a guy who isn’t even as good as Callahan sucks, so hopefully it is Horton.
I love Callahan but given the choice of Dubi/Cally, I have to keep Dubinsky. 20-goal wingers who excel on PK don’t grow on trees, but they’re still more abundant than 2-way centers with 1st line talent.
Last note, would be interesting if Rozi + Girardi/Gilroy was traded…while McCabe covers one spot, you’re reliant on another rookie to cover the other unless something else happens. Maybe they also send Seidenberg (UFA after season)?
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
they are trying to give olesz away so i wouldnt consider him a surprise name as deBoer has scolded him publicly. Horton can play center or RW and like i said he already played that with Olli so he could step right in to Cally’s spot and it would make for a huge size and physical line of Dubi-Olli-Horton.
Seidenberg would make a lot of sense for us as a stop gap and wouldnt hurt us long term salary wise. I think Sangs could come up and play 5/6 pair w redden for 12-15 min a night as the other 4 could easily play 45 min combined.

For what it's worth
Here’s the other fountain of information, ESPN rumors:
The Florida Panthers are looking for a power play forward on the trade market, a depth defenseman and a tough, gritty player. But, he told the Sun-Sentinel, “I don’t mind paying a fair price for a player we’re going to keep, but for some of the rental players that are out there, some of the prices being asked are ridiculous.”
But the Panthers’ trading will depend on how they’re doing in the next few weeks. If they fall out of contention, they will shop Jordan Leopold and Dennis Seidenberg, who are both unrestricted free agents in the offseason. They will shop forwards Rostislav Olesz and Kamil Kreps no matter what situation they are in near the trade deadline, reports ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun.

Callahan would NOT be a rental and WOULD be a player that the Pahters could keep. Just a thought, again it’s all speculation

yes, cally, rozi and gilroy all signed beyond this year.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 9, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions
cally can be a pp forward and a gritty player. rozi is definitely a depth d-man. maybe they want to give up seidenberg or leopold instead of mccabe and i dont care if they take rozi it’s even better to clear more cap space.

Depth also could mean taking on an extra D-man, which lends itself to Rozi and Gilroy/Girardi.

On the radio show, one of the regulars (Pauly !!) said that Dubi will become a superstar.
While everyone admitted really liking Dubi a lot, he’s not going to hit “Backstrom” #’s. Probably top-end a sold 2nd liner. 20-24 G and 45-maybe 50 points. Hardly in the superstar category.
BlueshirtBanter - beating up reporters at bus stops since 1994
it was a joke hence the lol. i think he can put up 60-65 points as a fringe 1st, very good 2nd liner.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 10, 2010 12:02 AM EST up reply actions
No – I realized that. Just saying that realistically, he’s not “superstar” material.
Problem this year is that he just doesn’t seem to be playing with the same grit/swagger/passion night in/night out that we’ve seen in the past. “Consistency”.

full season and Dubi probably hits those numbers this year, and it’s sort of clear he hasn’t peaked yet.
Whether he does peak is a question, but talent is there. And of course, the peak for Dubi seems to be higher than that of Cally’s.

so cally, rozi, gilroy for horton, seidenberg? i would take it as it clears 5 mil in cap space next year without really hurting us this year and gives us a more talented top 6 forward who is locked up reasonably for 3 more years.
You know...
5m from the Jokinen deal, 5 more mil from this deal, Kovalchuk wants 10m….just saying…

sign staal 3.2
sign EC 1 mil
sign lisin 850K
sign seidenberg 2 mil
dump redden in hartford -6.5
bring up heik, sangs
forwards in order of cap hit: kovy, gabby, dru, horton, aves, dubi, brash, ec, grachev (could stay down), lisin, aa, boyle, prust= 13 forwards (12 without EG)
d in order of hit: hamhuis, staal, seidenberg, mdz, heik, sangs (probably need a vet)
cap hit total: 55, 464, 999…cap space 1.335 mil.

there is a huge difference between getting Heatley

by Michael Gleich on Feb 9, 2010 4:30 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think it matters. Or, it shouldn’t. Dubinsky and Callahan are very attractive to other teams, but denying them only means they are assets willing to keep, no matter who we get in return. Trade talks about Dubinsky and Callahan have been roaming around for a long time, and for Sather to suddenly give up one of them just goes back on everything he has done, and makes me question what motivated him to act as he has in the past.

Duby looks like Manny Malhotra to me
Good skater, blah blah blah, hasn’t actually done anything during real NHL hockey but he has all this potential. Dubinsky annoys me at this point more then anything. Skate in behind the net, never take a defenseman 1 on 1, go 20 some odd games without a goal, we get it. To me, Dubinsky just hasn’t gotten one iota better since Jagr left town, and I’m tired of waiting. I’ll drive him to Florida myself for Horton.

Backstrom would be awesome..
But thats as likely as sather stops smoking cigars.
Heard the caps have already given backstrom a similar contract as ovechkin and are only waiting for a signature
Wow.
If that’s true (Backstrom locked up long term) I can’t wait to see the terms. He’ll be the 15th player under contract for next year, and they only have 15-16mm to work with. If it’s really long-term/big-bucks, they’ll be filling out those roster positions with all rookies on EL contracts or really cheap journeymen…..not exactly a recipe for success.

I would get rid of Girardi instead of Gilroy (referring to your trade proposal) . They are both the same age, but I believe Gilroy has more upside and offensive potential.

while i agree in terms of play two reasons i dont in terms of the trade:
1. florida doesnt want rentals and girardi while an rfa is an unknown in terms of contract.
2. trading gilroy would save another 1.75 mil next year on the cap.
by Michael Gleich on Feb 9, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions
yeah, i know Gilroy’s 1.75 mil cap hit hurts a little, but I think both him and Girardi don’t qualify as rentals. Like Callahan, both defensemen are “keepers” in a young organization.

here u go rmc:
@TSNBobMcKenzie Lehtonen to Dal for Vishnevsky and a pick appears to be tentatively done, pending completion of Dal-Chi. Not official yet tho.
db mentioned how he thinks it might need to be a 3 team deal for pieces to fit and while this wont really be a 3 team deal it does involve 3 teams though slightly crazy.
Clb trades: Huselius (2 yrs 4.75 mil cap hit)
Clb gets: Rozi (2 yrs 5 mil cap hit)
Fla trades: Horton, Seidenberg, 2nd round pick
Fla gets: prospal, cally, girardi
NYR trades: cally, prospal, rozi, girardi
NYR gets: Horton, Huselius, seidenberg 2nd round pick.
Columbus has for a while been looking for another vet d-man, i dont know if firing hitcock makes huselius fit better there or not since i dont know enough about the new guy and his system.
Fla gets grit and skill in cally and prospal, girardi is a solid top 4 d-man and in a defensive system very good and can hit even if he wont clear the crease. Cally and girardi are both under there control and they havent added salary, they probably want to dump olesz maybe there are other pieces i could look at to make that happen.
We get a 1st line lw in huselius which allows sather to sell prospal without declaring selling, gets horton as a long term c/rw and seidenberg as a fill in d-man who creates a little space and another pick while going for it now and not jeopardizing the future while also unloading rozi.
forgot other cap hits Horton (3 yrs @ 4 mil), seidenberg (2.25 expiring)…prospal (1.1 expiring) cally (1 yr 2.3) girardi (1.55 rfa)

i dont disagree but if he could get huselius maybe he does it that team wouldnt have secondary scoring issues, that’s for sure.

Certainly, that combined with Avery-AA-Lisin would be pretty deep (figuring the 3rd line gets suddenly much easier minutes)

and as much as we talk about top 5, that team makes the playoffs and could win a series or 2.

Offensively sure. Defense is still an issue but seidenberg over rozsival helps. Potter instead of Girardi would be an issue, but he hasn’t had a great year so maybe Potter can surprise.

well if u make those moves and are actually going for it, a trade for ur boy hamhuis wouldnt be a crazy move.

Sure but then you’re running out of stuff to offer that isn’t top prospects, which isn’t worth it even if they are that much improved.

My 2 cents on cally/dubi.I’d rather keep cally, more consistent,forechecking/energy/20 goals and he plays the same every night.Dubi’s got the skills to pay the bills, but he’s like a rollercoaster ride.
Si Vis Pacum Parabellum
That’s the best argument I’ve seen yet.
Still don’t agree, but it’s something.

I didnt have time to read the thread, but
If the main piece we get is Horton, and we must give them either Cally or Dubinsky, I say we give them Dubinsky because that would be a direct upgrade on Dubi, and we still have all the heart, grit, and skill that Cally brings to the table instead of two centers that bring mostly there skill instead of grit, although Dubi does a lot of that as well. But then of course they must take Rozi.

from dagoon44
<blockquote>noupf From what I was told there was a lot of tire kicking going on. Rangers looking to dump contracts and it lead to more serious talks
this potentially makes me feel better as if we are talking dumping contracts one of the R&R sisters almost certainly has to be involved
he also calls turco to philly.
sorry, dont know what happened, but source was dagoon44 who db talked about earlier

I came onto this rumor thread late, but the more I think about it, I’m sort of hoping it will happen.
Horton for either Cally or Dubi is an upgrade. (Although I worry that Horton has been injured pretty often). Although Dubi has more size and probably more talent, I would rather lose him than Callahan – he’s so damn inconsistent and Cally’s a warrior.
If we lose Gilroy or Girardi but get McCabe or Seidenberg that’s an upgrade, although they’re both older. I hope we lose Girardi – I just can’t look at him after the Carcillo/Gaborik thing.
And if we can dump Rozival or Redden that would be unbelievable.
a broken leg blocking a shot can happen to anyone.
he missed 15 games last year 9 ankle, 6 finger
prior 2 years played 82 games each year
year before 11 games; 1 flu, 10 sprained knee
I dont know if we consider that injury prone or not. i think it is a good sign that none of the injuries are repeat areas.
