Rangers Analysis: Previewing the Upcoming Trade Deadline
With the Olympics officially coming to a close yesterday with Team Canada winning Gold in Men's Ice Hockey and a magnificent closing ceremony following that, it is back to work for the National Hockey League. First off, the trade freeze that was in effect over the course of the two week break concluded at midnight, meaning general managers will have the next three days up until 3 pm on Wednesday to finalize any transactions they wish before the deadline. After that, the race for a playoff spot begins.
Now you would be mistaken to think that general managers have not been in contact during the trade freeze. In fact, we saw a hint of what is to come with all of the moves made right before we entered the Olympic break. The Rangers made two moves. The first bringing in Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust, and shipping off Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins to the Calgary Flames. They then sent a conditional draft pick San Jose's way in order to acquire bruiser Jody Shelley. Finally, on this past Saturday they claimed back-up netminder Alex Auld off of re-entry waivers.
From a Rangers standpoint, there are many questions to ask yourself as we approach the trade deadline. Let's face it, GM Glen Sather is not very revealing when it comes to these things, so anyone who claims that they know what he will do before 3 pm on Wednesday, well, is lying to you. Predicting is one thing, claiming to know is another, so I advise you to be careful of what you choose to believe and what you do not, because there will be a lot of rubbish thrown onto the Internet over the next few days (e5).
Based on the past, the likely scenario here will be Glen Sather again looking for a few rental players that can help carry his team into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. We have seen the same thing over and over again every year, so the chances of Slats changing his approach this time around are slim. This is the very reason fans are holding rallies outside of Madison Square Garden, because they are sick and tired of seeing the same series of events from season to season.
Much more after the Jump>>
I made it clear earlier in January the direction I believe this team should be going in. It is time to rebuild, sell, and start from scratch. I think as this roller coaster of a season continues, more and more fans are jumping on board with that idea. It only makes sense because it would solve the problem of having to scramble for rentals at this time of year every season.
I am curious to see how Glen Sather goes about doing this. He needs improvements on offense, he needs improvements on defense. I do not really see him being able to fix both so he is likely going to have to value one over the other. Which one would you pick? Exactly, it is not easy.
I think it is going to come down to whatever dead will be more fitting for this team. You do not want to get rid of too many youngsters, but at the same token, it would be nice to gain some veteran leadership in the back end. You want to keep your draft picks for the upcoming draft, but if something comes up where you can get that key player into your lineup just by adding a pick to the package, why not go ahead and do it? These are just some of the questions the Rangers front office faces.
It is possible that we see more league-wide transactions today than we see on Wednesday. If general managers did talk often over break like people on the internet claim, there could be many deals just waiting for the freeze to be over so that they can go throw. Maybe even the Rangers are one of them. It should be very amusing to say the least, even if the Blueshirts uncharacteristically decide to keep quiet this deadline.
Obviously we will have full coverage of the trade deadline and all of the happenings leading up to it here on the site. Between myself, Joe, Jim, and now Greg (welcome aboard!), I think it is safe to say that we have a crew capable of bringing news to you as it goes down, so stay tuned!

From what I've read
Sather has huge Souray and Booth both IMO are wrong for this team Souray for the basic fact that he’s hurt and won’t play until the last 3 weeks of the season and Booth because he is coming off a MAJOR concussion, if Sather can pry someone away from Florida I’d rather get Horton for some decent secondary scoring. Hopefully he wouldn’t get hit with the Rangers underachiever curse. Although my favorite pipe dream trades are getting Johnson or Brown from LA. But hey I guess if it works on NHL 10 and you have a blog go for it.

I admit I was surprised that Sather didn’t make a 3am announcement that he was unloading Sangs and a 1st for Ponikarovsky.
So far, so good.

though i must admit i haven’t seen much leaf action lately, ponikarovsky is a good pickup. i don’t think if we should be shopping now anyway.

No, he’s a good player, but it would be exactly like Antropov. Sather selling off for a 1.5 month rental (Poni is a UFA after the year)
I don’t want to see any of this rental garbage. If he’s going to make a deal, Sather needs to either sell, or trade for people that will help beyond 2010 (a la Horton)

I am usually excited at this time of year to see who the Rangers pick up
I am actually nervous right now cuz I dont want Sather to trade away anybody young for a rental like last years pickups of Derik Morris and Nik Antropov. I am tired of the quick patchup work of the Sather regime. Start buliding from the ground up putting a solid, young team together piece by piece. Show us fans that there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I have to admit, I was a giant fan of Slats at the point he came here… But as soon as he started with the parade of guys coming in mainly based on name recognition he lost me.
I agree with you about starting from the ground up, I’d fully bought into the concept when Neil Smith announced it the year prior to him getting fired. I’m quite tired of Slats belief that squeezing into a 5-8 slot and making the playoffs is our target… I’m even more tired by the Rangers fans that think making the playoffs is an acceptable goal.
Every time that someone tells me that “anything can happen in the playoffs” I ask them to name a team ( since the start of the 7 game series ) that hasn’t had home ice in the first round that has won the cup…
It happened once… and even that was a fluke, as had they been in the Western Conference they would have in fact had home ice. One time in roughly 40 years and yet people still believe that a team finishing 5-8 has a shot at the cup.
Rebuild… don’t bring in anyone over the age of Gaborik unless it’s a one year deal and unless it’s not a giant cap issue.
Ps… I’m still a fan of the idea of bringing in Chris Chelios for the remainder of the year… he will play for dirt, he said he wants to be in New York and though it goes my rules, it’s really the fact that he is a Norris winner who knows what it takes to win the cup… he knows the offensive game and the defensive which outside of maybe Ray Bourque or Brian Leetch coming in to teach these kids…. few others know both ends as well… we have good young talent on the blueline and they need mentoring… I think Schoenfeld has brought them along as far as he can… Chris Chelios would be perfect as he is a warrior, I’d love to see a run with him and then move into coaching next season..
We all saw the step back we took as a team when our leadership role was lost with Shanny going…. that needs to be filled again, particularly on the blueline.

Well… unless something happens with waivers… it looks like Mr. Chelios will be elsewhere.

Slats should just hold tight and not make any rental moves. Even with an addition or two this team still does not have enough firepower or consistency to make it past the first round. I, for one, would be happy rebuilding with our kids.
I dont know, i honestly dont think Sather can commit to a TRUE rebuilding mode.
I dont think he has it in him to just go with the kids and let them go through all the growing pains it takes to become a real team. He IS gonna go out and make deadline trades, He IS gonna go out in the offseason and spend on free agents. This is what he is and thats why he is and has been a huge problem for the New York Rangers. He truly is like a kid in a candy store when his Daddy…(Dolan) hands him a couple of bucks and says go ahead and buy whatever you like. Thank god for the cap otherwise you would see even bigger, worse contracts to contend with………it’s a real shame.
by giantsNYrangers on Mar 1, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t know if the cap really makes Slats less of an evil thing.
When he was giving out Holik and Kaspar money… there was no cap and while those contracts were out of the grasp of anyone’s logic… they didn’t hurt the team as much as Drury, Redden, Rosy etc…. because the $70 mil payroll pre lockout didn’t keep us from grabbing a great player if he came along… a guy like Kovalchuk would still be in play to us without the cap… under the cap, the contracts don’t have to be nearly as big to be as amazingly detrimental to our team…
Think about these contracts as guys like Stall and Girardi come up for raises and we are hard pressed to keep em here…
Maybe people are fearful of the offer sheet.. but I wouldn’t be surprised if a guy like Marc Staal were to get one thrown his way.

Florida has started the firesale......
Jordan Leoplold is a Penguin…..
good for florida to get a 2nd for him…just goes to show what guys like prospal and maybe even girardi could have fetched if sather would sell.
by Michael Gleich on Mar 1, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions
exactly.......Prospals value is through the roof right now.
Trade him!!!!!!
And we could def get atleast a 3rd…and maybe a 2nd for Girardi…….no?
by giantsNYrangers on Mar 1, 2010 10:04 AM EST up reply actions
maybe im crazy, waiting on the test results, but for my money especially depending on the system girardi is just as good if not better than leopold. plus girardi is younger and an rfa.
by Michael Gleich on Mar 1, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
Dan Girardi on his game is a very solid blueliner
and going to a cup contender which adds a change of scenery will bring out the best in him I think. I hope we get to find out

That's fine
I’d rather have Seidenberg with Horton anyway. lol

also if leopold can net a 2nd no way Nashville should deal Hamhuis for less than a 1.

@OnFrozenPond Nathan Horton (leg) on ice pre practice for #panthers … Dont know how long he will stay out
guess that means the leg is getting closer…still figure he is a week away or so.
Some reports had Horton ready to play as soon as the Olympic break concluded. Could be plus/minus a few days. Bigger question is “are they willing to deal him – or is he part of a core to build around” ?
BlueshirtBanter - beating up reporters at bus stops since 1994
well i saw one maybe 2 days ago that said he was still having toe pain in the leg so they were figuring maybe 10 days.
by Michael Gleich on Mar 1, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
this is what i saw on the 27th.
Do not expect Nathan Horton (broken leg) to return to action next week.
He is still experiencing a bit of pain in his leg and has yet to skate. The Panthers are hoping he will be on the ice next week. Even if that turns out to be the case, Horton will likely not be ready to play in games for at least a few days thereafter. Keep him on reserve until further notice.
maybe he is ahead of those projections seeing as how he at least was on the ice to start practice.

Nick, I cannot stress this enough, the Rangers are currently in a rebuild. You can’t just gut the team and “start from scratch”. They did that in 2004. Patience, my friend, patience. This team is going to be great in about three years. Until then, patience.
In response to other comments: Will someone like Horton help? Yes, he will. But he will cost you one of Stepan or Kreider, in addition to Dubinsky and a pick. For a fanbase that is stressing selling, that’s buying at the deadline.
