Rangers-Devils Preview: 5 Questions from "In Lou We Trust"
John Fischer over at In Lou We Trust, the SBNation home for the New Jersey Devils, sent me a list of questions to answer about tonight's game. Here are his questions, and my answers:
ILWT: The New Jersey Devils have struggled in an awful way in recent games, but the Rangers have lost their last 3 games. Is there a cause for concern, or is it overblown given the opponents and the fact that two of the losses came in overtime?
BSB: When you are a mediocre team and you lose three in a row, there is always cause for concern. The Rangers are in their annual frenetic run for the 8th seed, and as per usual have no margin for error. The Pittsburgh loss is one that could come back to haunt them. After chasing Fleury with 4 goals on 12 shots, they simply stopped shooting the puck for almost a period and a half, and lost a very winnable game that they led by two goals. You simply can't do those things when you are in their position.
ILWT: Chris Drury, Ryan Callahan, and Marian Gaborik were the Rangers' skaters at the Olympics and since coming back they have combined for only 3 goals: 2 from Callahan on 3/2 and 1 from Drury on 3/4. Are you pleased with their performances so far?
BSB: I've had to temper my expectations on Ryan Callahan this season. I like the way he plays the game, but I don't know if he is ever going to be the scorer I thought he would be. I will say this much, I am rarely disappointed in his play. Drury is a guy I and a lot of other Ranger fans are tough on, I am not sure I will ever be pleased with his performance, but his goal against Pittsburgh the other night was incredible.
As for Gaborik, he was hurt before the Olympics, toughed it out to play for his country, and unfortunately wasn't ready to come back when the NHL went back to work. I still don't think he is ready, but he is gutting it out. I didn't have a problem with him playing in the Olympics, there was a lot of pride at stake for Slovakia, and he felt he was ok to play. It's the nature of the beast when you have NHL players playing in the Olympics.
ILWT: At the beginning of the season, rookie defensemen Matt Gilroy and Michael Del Zotto were playing very well. Now that it's March, what's your take on each of their season's so far?
BSB: I think both have regressed somewhat, and I blame the coaching staff. It's pretty well known that Tortorella is not patient with kids, as we saw from his meltdown on Zots a few weeks ago. I don't think it's helping either of them to be playing with Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival either. Paul Mara would have been the perfect guy to have around for the young defensemen, but Tortorella couldn't get him out of town fast enough.
ILWT: Over the course of the whole season, one of the criticisms of the Rangers is that the offense begins and ends with Gaborik. Given that the team's goals scorer per game average is 2.54 (just behind NJ at 2.55), is this a valid criticism? If so, what do you think can be done now to squeeze more goals from the other forwards?
BSB: The Rangers have had two brief stretches this season where they were "Gabby-less", they definitely had more offense the second go-round. The Rangers have a bad mix of forwards right now, not enough guys that will buzz the net and score the dirty goals. Until they find a guy or two that can do that, I don't see the situation changing.
ILWT: Lastly, do you have a prediction for tonight's game? Who gets to snap their losing streak tonight?
BSB: Henrik will lead the Rangers to a 2-1, 3-2 win. He always gets up for games against Marty, and I think Hank is playing the best hockey of his career. At this point, he is simply the better goalkeeper, and he will get the win tonight. (Let the argument begin!)

One disagreement
The Rangers have plenty of guys that buzz the net and score dirty goals….Avery, Callahan, Drury, Dubinsky, even the vulture Gaborik. The problem is they don’t have the guys that shoot the puck to create the rebounds and subsequent dirty goals.
That actually starts with the defense, they’re not shooting from the point (at least they weren’t early in the season, I have yet to check their numbers since my fanpost after 20 or so game), which means the forwards are left to generate their own shots, which takes them out of position to clean up their own messes.
At least that’s my opinion.

They shoot from the point. They shoot all the time, what have you been watching.
The problem is they magically find ways to shoot the puck right into a defenders pads, which then leads to an odd man rush and a goal against.
Well..shooting in this case means actually on goal.
Yes I’m aware of their prolific ability to hit the one-man traffic in front of them.

don’t forget miss the net.
If it miraculously misses a defender, usually it hits the glass.

that is...
when they are actually able to keep possession at the blue line. when it isn’t shooting into defender’s pads, this d is letting every other pass back to the point slip away into the neutral zone. its hard to sustain pressure when the point guys can’t keep control of the puck. they shoot into pads because they’re in a rush and the rangers have absolutely zero coherent game plan.
There's only one thing I truly agree with there...
Paul Mara should have been kept here for one more season. I will say this much: where Mara used to be a dud (mostly defensively), he has put his game together pretty well. I would’ve thought that Glen Sather could’ve prompted a deal to get him back from Montreal at the deadline. Given his speed and Gilroy’s abilities, that would’ve been a nice pairing to see.

I hope Avery Shows Up
It’s great when he scores against the Devil’s in NJ.

I am well and truly shocked.....
I don’t think it’s helping either of them to be playing with Wade Redden …..
That you could cast such aspersions on “the best first passer in the game…”
Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.
I mean – certainly they’re learning from Redden, right?
(there’s your lead-in line……) ;-)

Side Note
Just read the the NHL will Not suspend Cooke for the head shot on Savard. If that was Avery that would have him on trial, must be nice to play on the NHL’s Penguins
The funny thing about the Cooke non-suspension
Is that he already once got suspended this season for being a repeat violator of dangerous hits to the head. And suddenly he gets nothing? Makes no sense.

It’s seriously going to be ugly. And the NHL have themselves to blame.

Speaking of which
I can’t wait until Sunday. Hope the 4th line gets a lot of time.

The thing is
He already got suspended once this season for being a repeat violator, regardless of whose team he’s on. That really makes this unimaginable. What sense does this make at all?

I’m really surprised by this, given that it was a blind side hit and that Savard has a Grade 2 concussion, and the GM’s are meeting right now to discuss this issue. I would think the league wants to send a message. It appears that they have: that the punishment for such hits is totally random and it helps your chances if you play for a marquee team. How was this different from the Glencross hit on Drury, for which Glencross was suspended?
you know your league is lacking in credibility when your chief arbiter of justice is Colin “Cancer” Campbell. The NHL continues to shoot itself in the foot no matter what they try to do. The blame has to fall squarely on the head of one “person” : Gary Bettman.
The Coyotes will lose about $20,000,000.00 this season. Jerry Moyes lost about $300,000,000.00 as the owner of the Coyotes, and now the NHL is suing him for even MORE money. The moral here is this … Do business with the NHL at your own risk.
As for Cooke, he knew what he was doing, he had every intent to hurt Savard, especially since Savard had already shot the puck, Cooke’s hit could not possibly have had any other intent. Leave it to Cancer to subjectively blow an easy call. This just shows how subjective the justice is handed down, and it also shows how stupid and subjective the whole “repeat offender” stipulation really is.
As for the game tonight, hopefully Shelley AND Prust can both get to throw down, certainly the devils deserve to get it handed to them. I hope the Rangers show up tonight, with this team one never knows.
