Blueshirt Banter Memo

By the way I was the one who removed the story. I removed it because of the nature of the comments.

SBNation is an amazing platform to write on for many reasons, but the main reason why it makes Blueshirt Banter so special is because it creates a community. Jim and I work very hard to make sure that this forum is an open and welcoming environment for everyone to come in, express their opinions, and debate. While the platform does amazing things it also opens the door very wide for trolls, personal attacks, and slanderous comments. Things that myself, Jim and all of the other co-writers here strive to keep off this site every day so that others can feel safe and comfortable posting here.

There are over seven writers on this site, the expectation is that eventually someone will write something that upsets you all. Personally I don't agree with what Greg had to say, but I also didn't publicly trash him, curse him off, and throw bile his way for writing it. He has a right to his opinion, no matter how much you disagree with him. It is no different than putting up a fanshot or a fanpost, or even making a comment in an open thread. This site thrives on the knowledge that one can come in, make their point and not be attacked for it. Disagreeing is one thing, but what I saw wasn't disagreement.

I know many of you, and I am as friendly with you all as one can be through the fences and barriers of internet relationships. You are all good people, you are all better that what happened today. This site is meant to be open for all, including the writers. Please accept my personal apologies for what happened today, and please also take to heart what I had to say.

You guys make this site, you really do. You know how much we appreciate you all, and you all know what you mean to all of us here. I hate to do have to write something like this, but comments like the ones made in the story will not be tolorated.

Thanks guys!

I came to the site expecting some news on tonights game or a nice fanpost to read, and I see this apology. Can you fill me, (brief, I guess) on what exactly was written? I don’t mind seeing opposing viewpoints.

Respect

Joe, I frequent this site and rarely comment. Sometimes there are things said I’m sure everyone can find a point of contention with. His post, however, was just childish and mauled the overall integrity of BSB. When one of the head writers writes something like that, it’s disrespectful, and the audience responded in kind. You definitely did the right thing by taking it down but it should never have been posted in the first place.

by TAT on Mar 12, 2010 5:50 PM EST reply actions

My comment stands the orignal post knocked thi sight down a few pegs.

The writer should have his opinion however is opinios were so far off it brings down the integrity of all the posts.

I stopped reading Larry Brooks @ the NY Post for stuff like that.

Good call Joe!

I agree with Foree99 ….. the regulars behaved, I also noticed a lot of “new” names, but you have to deal with that kind of stuff on the web were it can be somewhat anonymous. I’m with you Joe that’s why I left other sites because there isn’t the amount of " s*** talking" one & done posters on Banter, & you guys give really good info & great reads.

i would agree that some of the comments that i saw at least went further than was necessary to make their point and i will say it is an unreasonable expectation and would be pretty boring if we all agreed with everything that was posted on here. what does need to exist is a mutual respect b/w all of us on here that while we may disagree with the opinion someone else has opined it does not make them any less entitled to that respect and at the same time the writer doesnt have any higher standing than the people responding to it.

i believe that the story was going to generate heat no matter what bu i will agree with froese99 that some of the comments in response didnt help to simmer the situation. i understand if greg was feeling ganged up on and the like, but to call those who disagree “typical ranger fans who cant take criticism of their team” is something i expect to hear from a fan of another team like philly or nj. i think if anything this board has shown in the past that criticism is welcome of this team and just about everyone on it, but what was the problem in this case which i mostly stayed out of was the framing of it.

I believe that a case could be made on the merits of recent play that Auld has played as well as Hank and should get more time down the stretch. There are plenty who would probably disagree with that, but i dont think it would devolve as this did because the framing came out differently for me. I think if Greg had framed what Auld was doing with his mask in terms of the way i took it yesterday when i heard about it as a positive on Auld and his decision to honor the Ranger past it would have been praised and the argument for him getting more time in comparing the recent play of both goalies would have been respected even if disagreed with. What happened instead i believe is that when it was taken as a platform to take a dig at Hank as if Henrik hasnt cared about this organization and what it has stood for got everyone’s hair to stand up in attack mode and then the rest of what could have been made as his case for Auld playing more gets lost and the attacks flow from it.

Rant over.

There's a fine line between bashing perspectives and person

‘Out’ there?:
Let’s not forget the trade deadline proposed movement threads; that certainly generated a lot of brew-ha. Whew. I certainly posted my fair share of duds there! :)

At a risk of putting words in people’s mouths, the key is to NEVER MAKE IT PERSONAL. It’s one thing to bash an opinion as ludicrous, another to swear at a person, declare him/her mentally incapacitated and/or of a turd-like nature.

I’m not defending anyone, nor does anyone here require it. This is literally my favorite site on all of the Net due to its terrific community. Other SBNation blogs I visit (not like I have a choice for those with 1 per team) are ripe with racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-semitic attacks. This community, however, consistently rises above it. Blueshirt Banter is an amazing home for a team that doesn’t always have the most pleasant of fans. At least we’re not Flyers fans, as a collective. ;)

Echoing Joe’s comments, please keep this a safe – but NOT STERILE – home. Declare this post f’in crazy, just not me. (I already know I am, don’t state the obvious.) This is probably the only place on the Web where we can all drunk post w/ the Rangers down 5-1 in the Second, sans recourse. I like it that way.

PS Kudos to the Site Admins for Caring this Much.

Way to ‘Man up’ in resolving these matters. It’s not an easy thing to do, likewise assume responsibility for outcomes.

That’s true but I think Greg should also consider how wrong it is to be taking immature, petty, 100% unbelievable shots at our franchise player, Lundqvist from the safety of a computer.

I definitly want to apologize if I said anything that was out of line. I was making a playful joke but as I read more and more posts I can see people getting angry. Definitly the right thing to do by taking it Down but I just want to apologize again if anything was said that was wrong.

if i said anything out of line id also like to apologize..

everyones entitled to their own opinion.. if he feels lundqvist should be benched thats his opinion.

but to say that he hasnt done anything for new york is just wrong. flat out wrong

I’ll agree that some of the comments were overheated and probably inappropriately directed as personal comments. I apologize for that. I know we are all Ranger fans, most hardcore, and all want for this team, AND its players, to succeed.

But in the 6 or 7 months I’ve been reading here, and in the shorter time I’ve actually been posting, I never saw anything in a main page post that upset me that much. While it was well written, and had some very good commentary, parts of it were, in my mind, slanders against players who deserved it the least.

But I’ll re-write what I posted. His comment on Lundqvist was the equivalent of a French person moving to the USA, tattoing an American Flag on his back, and then calling that person more Patriotic than a Marine because of a tattoo. Somebody who gives his all every game, and has gotten NO support from his teammates who allow him to get run every game.

And many, if not most, of the posters here have made quality criticisms of this team, the coaching staff, and some of the players. To say that we’re “typical Ranger fans who can’t take criticism of their team” smacks of a smug attitude and contempt for anybody who criticized his comments, and a complete lack of involvement reading the other commentary in this community.

I appreciate those who run this community, and those who are part of it. Thank you.

Again we apologize for what went on here today, and it won’t happen again.

Onward and upward folks. :)

I’m certain all involved would agree. Let’s make sure we don’t completely sanitize as knee jerk. Potvin still sucks. And everyone remains welcome on this site. Imagine I just bought everyone a round of beers, we all bash Redden together.

I read this site everyday, and almost never post. However it seems that the one time I forget to check the site cause I’m sick seems to be the one time that something really interesting happened.

I will apologize for my lashing out.

I will stand up on my soap box Joe and Apologize as I did curse Greg out. I am not ashamed to admit it. I did go a little over board. I understand that Greg is entitled to his opinion and if that’s his belief then so be it.

But his finger of blame is pointed at the wrong man.

I didnt get the chance to read the post.
I, among others, knows that hank is the most important player for the rangers and he gives it his all every night.

But even if you dont agree with a post or comment you dont have to grab a torch and stant throwing stones. It’s to bad that it had to come to the point where a writer have to leave the banter.

The only positive thing i can come up with about this is that the reason it happend is probebly because we’re all such die hard fans that we just cant stand when someone says something bad about the players we think is the best ones on the team.

To bad it had come to this.

Best of luck to you in the future, greg

JOE!

i guess i missed the post. i know the regualrs wouldn’t have cursed and personally attack a writer. stuff like this happens because this website is so good. bigger lawn = more weeds, its just the way it is.

the people that care about this site, our team, new york city & hockey have been here since day one and will be here when we win the cup. these are the rangers fans i know, decent people who love hockey and live by the same code that is also a part of this wonderful game. Respect to you joe for removing the post, and encouragements to greg for voicing his opinion.

Joe-

I’ve been reading Blueshirt Banter for quite some time, but this year is the first that began posting. In the past I went to other sites such as SI, ESPN, TSN or even NHL.com for news and info on the Rangers, however I found myself continuing to return to BB. The fans – especially dbmavern and rangersmurf – are extrodinarily well educated on the team and the game as a whole. While I sometimes disagree with some fans’ points, I respect well thought out logic and debate. Far be it for me to consider myself a regular here, but if I offended anyone suggesting the Sather was posting here under the pen name “gregg”, I appologize. You did the right thing taking it down.
