Rangers Analysis: Re-Signing Vinny Prospal

I know it may be early, but the way in which Vinny Prospal has been playing for this New York Rangers team all season long has been stunning, and I think it is about time the front office begins to talk with Prospal's agent in hopes to re-sign him for the next season. I say his performance this season has been stunning because a 35-year-old free agent making $1.1 million usually is not expected to contribute all that much, and most often the fans do not have high expectations. After being bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the conclusion of last season, Vinny had something to prove and he made it clear that was determined. Apparently determination can take you very far.

Prospal's 17 goals and 35 assists for 52 points are good for second on the team in scoring behind Marian Gaborik. In fact, the Czech native is in the top fifty in the National Hockey in scoring and has already surpassed his point totals from last season by seven with fourteen games still to be played. And his goal scoring, which Vinny is not particularly known for, has been timely to put it best, and he has more goals scored than Scott Gomez did as a Ranger just a year ago.

Offense is not the only area of Prospal's game that has been sharp as he has been stellar in the defensive zone as well. Vinny has a plus nine rating on the season, which is excellent for a player that is sent out onto the ice everytime his club is shorthanded. And of course, his energy, enthusiasm, and intensity are present every night, which not only benefits him, but his teammates, especially the youngsters, around him.

Obviously Prospal's numbers will only go up from this point on, especially if he continues to put on performances such as last night's in Atlanta. So now the decisions lie in general manager Glen Sather's lap. Prospal should, and deserves to be, re-signed for the 2010-11 season. However, taking his age into account, you do not want to lock him up for an extended amount of time, nor do you want to give him a paycheck that will come back to bite you in the behind later in the year.

Star-divide

In my opinion, I think Prospal should get a one-year contract worth $1.5 million. That is how I would go about dealing with Vinny, and at this point in his career, I think winning is more important to him than the money in his bank account. He loves New York, he has stated that he would love to return, and it has been an easy adjustment for his family travel-wise.

I say this because Prospal has grabbed the attention of other teams around the league, there is no question about that. He may be offered larger and lengthier contracts than Glen Sather will put on the table, but Vinny just does not seem like the greedy type to me. He doesn't want to leave the Rangers and the Rangers do not want to part ways with him either.

I think that Prospal would be delighted to return to the Blueshirts for the terms I listed above, and I also (hope) that Sather will present him with a contract offer along those lines come the summer months. From a fan's perspective, we would all be thrilled to welcome Mr. Intensity back to New York for another go-around.

Tell me what you think in the comments.

i have no problem bringing vinny back as long as it is year to year since it will be an over 35 deal and it is a reasonable price. problem is with the year he has had 1.5 mil probably wont be enough unless he is willing to take less to stay here.

agree

I completely agree with you leetch, but do you think we can sign him before the draft then trade him for a higher pick? that might make a trade worth while if its possible.

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 13, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

1.5 million would be a bargain for us.

by earthworm on Mar 14, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Vinny, but I’m against resigning him for the sole purpose that I don’t trust the front office. They are going to grossly overpay him. At this point in Vinny’s career, how can we honestly say we know what were going to get from him? Yes, he’s having a great season, but is going to be 36. Besides Prospal’s career has flucuated b/w good bad, and mediocre seasons. I’d sign him to 1 year at 2 mil (the most) and that’s it. That way, we can trade him at the deadline next season, depending on the circumstances of course. I’d like to see a rebuilding process start to take effect. Vinny is a solid vet who shows a lot of emotion out there (and I respect and love him for it). But for a team that has begun the propaganda train of “structure,” they need some structure via a legitimate rebuilding plan that can map out a time line for this team to be stanely cup ready. The kings, hawks, pens all had a plan and stuck to it. They didn’t budge. Look at them now. It doesn’t have to take The Rangers currently have one foot in the rebuild process. You can’t do it that way unless you’re already an established team like Detroit that can bring in young guys to start on the 4th line and watch them move up. The only plans we’ve seen thus far are…well…

Safe bet

Prospals a safe bet to put up .5 pts per game next season, so I say why not. Plus, he can help the kids out.

The only problem with this is that we don’t win.

It'll be up to Vinny....

…he’ll probably get an offer commensurate with his value at this stage of his career. The question is will he settle for that (remember he’s got a boat load of cash from Tampa in the bank already) or will he simply find the highest bidder?

would the possibility of torts either being on the hot seat next year or if he was fired this offseason impact vinny wanting to stay?

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 1:51 PM EST reply actions

You know, I thought about that, and it is a possibility, but Vin came here to prove he can play, and he has done that. He doesn’t really have anything more to prove, to Torts anyway.

i agree he has nothing to prove to torts, but if we bring in another coach with a different system he might decide the “discount” isnt worth it and to take the money he can get somewhere else or to try and latch on to a contender.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

I’d love to see Vinny back with 1 year, 1.5 mil deal, but his production warrants a better contract than that. I wouldn’t blame him for wanting a multi-year deal with a higher salary, and if he asks for that kind of deal I think it’s best to let him walk.

by XLII on Mar 13, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

I know this thread is about Vinny, but I’d be more interested in the Rangers resigning Christensen, as he is younger.

by Joe1969 on Mar 13, 2010 2:36 PM EST reply actions

i would expect they will bring EC back and he is an RFA so it is slightly different than vinny. I could see maybe 2 yrs at 1-1.2 mil per for EC

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

as much as I like EC, we are very heavy at the center ice position, unless Sather can dump one of the R & R sister, there just isn’t enough cap space for all these centers, however if he can dump Boyle EC would be a good 3rd or 4th line center that can be interchangeable on the top lines as needed

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 13, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

that depends on what they do with Olli not to mention if they plan on keeping Dru and Dubi and wings in the future. bigger problem with bringing back EC, Vinny, Olli or whomever is we are then basically coming back with the same group of players that suck this year, lol.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

true, but I would rather Oli don’t come back and give AA more Ice time and let some younger guys come up from hartford, We can deal EC since he has played well, a team like Florida might like him, and throw in Lisin

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 13, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

ok so say it is EC and Vinny back Olli gone…is that not the same team we had before the olli deal basically?

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

the only young guy in hartford is grachev and they probably leave him down like they did with AA staying 2 years in hartford.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

yeah its the same team, but without unloading R & R is there any real chance for change? not to mention we need $$ to resign Staal this summer, even if Girardi leaves there isn’t a lot of room to move under the cap

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 13, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

im not disagreeing, im just looking at what we have and unfortunately am not seeing much hope of a different product next year unless cally, dubi, aa all take huge strides this summer.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

according to capgeek if we let shelley, lisin, girardi, olli all walk. bring up sangs, sign vinny for 1.5, EC for 1.1 and have chad johnson as the backup goalie while giving staal 3.5 mil (maybe sather lowballs on a short deal so he has more capspace) we only have 5 mil in cap left and only 19 roster players

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

sather will not let Shelly walk …… he likes his tough guys, hopefully he can work some magic and dump Rosival & or Redden

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 13, 2010 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

i want to say i hope that to and i do to get rid of them but i fear what sather would turn around and do w the money.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

the only caveat would be if some of the young guys like stepan, werek, grachev blow them away and then while they might struggle at least it would be growing pains for the future instead of sucking away a wasted year. for the record i dont see any of them here next year

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

also agree and your right I don’t see them here next year either at least unless there are some major injuries next season

Good article

I like him. We should try to lock him down for like 3 years 9.5 mill. I like EC too. 2 years 2.2 mill.

by WalkerNYRanger on Mar 13, 2010 4:21 PM EST reply actions

Ugh. No multi-year deals for Prospal. He’s over 35 so if he retired after one, you’re stuck with his cap hit for those extra two years.

Someone is going to sign him for at least 3 million. He is our Assistant Captain and has 52 points. Let’s lock him down for a couple. I like the leadership he brings to the table.

by WalkerNYRanger on Mar 13, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

so let them sign him for 3 mil, we dont have 3 mil to spend on vinny.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

who said anything about olli? we dont have money period. as much as i would love to say they will wake up and dump redden in the minors i have pretty much given up on sather doing that

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention

If you give Vinny 3 mil, you can basically throw out any illusions of getting a Volchenkov or Hamhuis.

When you’re in the position the Rangers are against the cap, that extra 1m is a big deal.

1yr – 2m for Vinny. No more.

by George E. Ays on Mar 13, 2010 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

ive lost illusions of volchenkov or hamhuis cause i have resigned myself to suffering through redden and rozi until sather goes.

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

maybe there is a shot he could trade rozi this summer, but ive given up on the hartford dreams

by mleetch352 on Mar 13, 2010 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

Idk if i remember correctly Sather said himself “we’ll give Redden 1 more shot this year” or something to that effect. So since he didn’t perform I wouldn’t count out that possibility of dumping him in Hartford at all, although realistically I don’t think he will do it either. doesn’t hurt to be optimistic now does it?

by CrazyRangerFan on Mar 13, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

by CrazyRangerFan on Mar 13, 2010 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I think Volchenkov is a pipe dream regardless because I’m pretty sure that OTT will re-sign him.

Hamhuis is fair game but you’re right, if Rozie or Redden isn’t traded, there is no room for 4 defenseman each making 3.5+

Concur.

I can’t see Prospal accepting anything less than $3m/yr. on the open market next year. He’s proven himself productive and durable on an offensively challenged team, likewise a leader for ones attempting to rebuild. There will be demand for him.

Jokinen will likely fetch slightly lower than Antropov money. I see a team like DET, VAN giving him a whirl to supplement scoring sans defensive responsibilities galore.

honestly. someones gonna give prospal 3 mil and hes gonna take it..

if we could sign him 1 year, and possibly 2 if hell take less money im all for it.

what i would love to happen is…

dump redden (6.5 mil), sign volchenkov (4.5). let olli (5.25) go and resign prospal (2.5). resign staal (3 mil extra) and girardi (.75 mil extra).. id like to keep lisin but hes not going to resign after how he was treated here.. that would make our defense SOOO much better

if we could balance out with that money than wed be ok.

I would be ok with giving vinny up to a two year contract worth up to 2 million per year … that wouldn’t kill our payroll and he is deserving since he is one of the few emotional sparks on the team.

by NYR9320 on Mar 13, 2010 7:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I agree

I agree, I was thinking a 2 year 4 mil deal is not exorbitant and would be a nice increase for a deserving player, plus that won’t hurt us against the cap, I think that would be a nice value for the team. If he got a better offer and went, I would harbor no ill will to him, the salary cap is the sole cause of this even being an issue. I hate Gary Bettman and what he’s done to ruin the league in every possible way.

If winning is important to him???

If he likes winning over money……..WHY THE HELL WOULD HE WANT TO STAY ON THIS TEAM?????? With this owner, GM, and coach, we are destined for nothing until all 3 are gone!!

by I hate people on Mar 14, 2010 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

While you might be right on some points...

the proper names for “…all 3 are gone!” would be Rozsival, Redden, and Drury. Sather would be a big plus, I kinda like Tort, but if the players have tuned him out already, he needs to go. Dolan won’t give up something giving him 20+ million in profit a year, so unless someone offers him a shitload of money for the team, he won’t be parting ways with it anytime soon.

I love Drury on the team, I do, but his salary is downright killing us. If he were making 4 mil a year instead of 7 against the cap, I’d be praising this guy nonstop, but he’s not, and that has some weight on our sentiment for him even if it shouldn’t. We can’t help it.

Rozsival is probably in the same boat as Drury. If he were making 2.5-3M a year against the cap instead of 5(?), I don’t think we’d be so hypercritical of his mistakes, but again, we can’t help it. As hockey fans, as Ranger fans, we commensurate salary with performance. At times he plays solid hockey. He can have good defensive positioning, and a scoring touch. The rest of the time he’s a sliding pylon wasting cap space on a cap-crippled team. There’s only one thing worse on the roster (see Redden, Wade).

Redden is someone who needs to hang up his skates. He’s too pricey to buy out, too much of a failure to net any kind of trade value, and too pricey to demote without getting a shitstorm from the NHLPA (though, I don’t see how they would if they didn’t mind Nylander being demoted and shipped to Grand Rapids). Again, we can’t blame him for accepting the contract Sather gave him. If you were some lackey working for whatever company you work for, and your contract was expiring. You look excellent to any employer, and a competitor offers you a GUARANTEED salary of 3-5x what you’re making now to do exactly what you’re doing right now, you still get paid if your work declines, I don’t see any way in hell how you turn that job down. We can blame him for his performance though. There’s a reason we want him demoted, and a rookie to take his place. A rookie could do the job as well as he does, and that’s the worst-case scenario. If a rookie makes mistakes, it’s not the worst thing, as they’re more likely to improve in a shorter time, things can only get better in the future. With a 34 year old Redden, things can only go downhill (unless of course you think he’s a Lidstrom or Brodeur, or will live forever, which surely isn’t the case). He’s worse than a pylon. He’s a mobile screen for Lundqvist, and that’s the best case. Still not as bad as Staal’s skate, but that’s another story in itself.

All in all, we need a lot of change, and with the current roster and management, there’s a lot that needs to be done. Undesirable contracts need to expire or be erased from the books. Shitty managements needs to be given the boot, and new management needs to be willing to win as much as they care about their profit margin. Certain players need to be given more ice time, and some less. Players need to be equally accountable for grievous errors, though the rookies can be given a little slack, but still be made aware for their errors, and what they need to do to fix it.

by Kritikal on Mar 14, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

you make comments like if dru and rozi were making less then they would be good and helping us and redden is redden, but the common denominator of your 3 is still sather paying them that money. it is not their fault they said yes.

by mleetch352 on Mar 14, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Vinny Prospal? That is the least of our problems? I read somewhere a suggestion of trading gabby and lundquist now when we can get a ton of talent for them . The more I think about it the more it could actually make sense with the amount of deficiencies this team has and it’s back pushed up against cap for a couple of more years. I think by the it takes to fix this(Including Management), they will both be past their primes and overpaid as rangers seem to become. I was wondering what you guys think , and if you have in mind a couple of nice affordable players to fill some wholes or a move or two on how to keep competitive with “our core” so I can have a reason to keep watching. Just looking for some hope. I’m not getting any younger either. Thanks for all the great info boys and keep up the good work.
