With Time Running Out, Rangers Need to Show Fight, Rangers-Flyers Preview

Rangers fans have had today's game circled on the calendar since January 21st, when Flyers goon Dan Carcillo took on Marian Gaborik, used him as a punching bag, and the Rangers stood around with their hands in their pockets, the biggest culprit being Dan Girardi, who was closest to the beating.

Here was Girardi's quote to the NY Post after the game:

"I guess I was overthinking it, Girardi said."I didn't want to take another penalty, because I knew we already had one there on Brandon Dubinsky, but I should have gotten involved. I should have jumped in. Maybe it was the wrong decision, but it was the decision I made at the time. If there's a next time, I would go."

It's still a hot topic amongst Ranger fans and around the NHL, and we are all anxious to see what will happen today. Since that game in January, the Rangers have acquired two guys capable of dropping the gloves in Brandon Prust and Jody Shelley, and most of the faithful are expecting one of them to step up today and do what their new teammates seemed so unwilling to do that night.

The Rangers haven't stood up for each other a whole lot this season, which to me is unfathomable. We've seen Henrik Lundqvist get run, Drury get clobbered, and Gaborik get his head handed to him in a fight, while the rest of the team casually observed. Maybe, just maybe, this team can show a little fight today and stick up for each other when the moment comes. The playoff picture looks pretty bleak right now, but today is the perfect opportunity for them to show they aren't going down without a fight.

Preview after the break.......

Season series: This is the fourth of six meetings between the teams, with the Flyers taking 2 of 3 so far. The Flyers came away with a 2-0 victory in their last meeting on Jan. 21 in Philadelphia. Rangers will finish the season with a home and home against the Flyers.

Last Ten: Flyers 7-2-1      Rangers 5-3-2

Michael Leighton is expected to get the start in goal, he is 8-1-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average in his last 11 starts. However, he has struggled in the last two road games - both losses - posting a 4.41 GAA while getting pulled once.

I don't think I need to tell you who is expected to start in goal for the Rangers.

Win or lose

I just hope we don’t get bullied this game. With shelly and prust here it helps but you never know with this ranger team anymore.

carcillo is a coward!!

I guarantee he proves that today.

were only 6 points ahead of the isles! and 5 ahead of the hurricanes!

if we keep loosing we can get 13th in the east!! and 3rd in the nhl!! worst that is.

imagine the third overall pick? if toronto or edmonton takes a defensemen we can get seguin or hall..

on the other side of things. in 6th are the flyers, who are up 7 points with a game in hand. in 7th are the canadiens who are up 7 points nd we have 2 games in hand. in 8th are the bruins who are up 3 points with a game in hand.

im pulling for a tank! i mean if we lost our last game we would only have been 4 points our of 13th :) imagine how exciting draft day would be with a 3rd pick????

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

isles play toronto today too, so either the isles get to 65 (we still play 1 at their place) or toronto creeps up to 60 (they also play us twice)

either way in terms of playoffs b’s will have 2 in hand and we will have 1 in hand on mon after today.

Good Start

Most important part of this game will be who gets in fornt. With the lead, you can “take more liberties” with “offensive” players.

I wonder if Avery will be back in?

i would say probably not because we won the other day without him. but against the flyers its a possibility

i think avery has to be back...

especially for lisin cuz torts hates him…but i wanna see the avery prust shelley line just kick some ass tonight….i bet you anything carcillo gets in gabbys face today trying to make him fight again…if im a ranger tonight and i see that, im skating across the ice and im gonna grab that bitch carcillo by the throat and run his ass into the boards…hopefully this causes a good ol’ bench clearing brawl…that’d be awesome

by nutz_35 on Mar 14, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

lmao u got that right.

shelley avery prust would be great

i think it was said it was just going to be a one game thing and it is the flyers so you know lisin will be down to get another potential fighter in the game. he could be back out vs mon i guess.

by mleetch352 on Mar 14, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yep AVES BACK, LISIN SCRATCHED

by mleetch352 on Mar 14, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

give Sean Avery some credit

Sean Avery was the only one that game who actually attempted to do something the other pussy;s (yes you Dan G.) should have done.

by gene4240 on Mar 14, 2010 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

maybe a crazy idea but does Dan Girardi try or actually get in a fight today as an attempt to make up for not doing it last time?

by mleetch352 on Mar 14, 2010 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

As funny as this sounds ...

Here’s the lines I would go with today:
Gaborik Prospol Avery
Voros Joker Dubinsky
Shelly Drury Callahan
Christensen boyle Prust

Roll 4 lines through the first period, no #1 line; get the fighting over with, then go back to the Torts scrambled eggs style of bench management with Shelly, Voros and Boyle riding the pine as usual.

Seriously though, once the dust settles, I’d like to see:
Gabby Prospol Joker
Cally Drury Christensen
Avery Dubinsky Prust
Shelly Boyle Voros

by bleed'n blue on Mar 14, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

i wanna see avery prust shelley boyle and voros all in the lineup
thats a pretty tough line up

by mike2 on Mar 14, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

you forgot AA

today might be a good day to bench boyle and play voros though

by mleetch352 on Mar 14, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Hear ya -

I really like AA and I think he has some fantastic potential … But in a game like this could be, having him running around with his head down like Prucha getting blasted might not be the best idea for his development.

by bleed'n blue on Mar 14, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

that might be true but we both know he isnt getting benched for someone like boyle to play.

Side note

Did anyone else see Ovi’s hit, tht got him another Game Misconduct? I thought it was a good hit. Its no wonder players are scared to play head Cooke takes Savard’s head of nothing, but a “superstar” gets a game for a solid hit ……. Weird

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 14, 2010 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

can’t agree that it was clean, Ovie made contact with Campbell’s numbers on his jersey. textbook hit from behind.

by cookin26 on Mar 14, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe but there was no intent to injure, so the game misconduct was over kill

by Nyrfan23 on Mar 14, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

HELP!!!!!!

stuck in jersey with no power and house parially underwater – but my biggest problem is I can’t watch the game!!!! Got my laptop fully charged thou – please keep game descriptions coming!!!! thanks
