Sather resign P.A Parenteau!!

This kid has skills 1st game back from injury and he has 3 assists. He never should've been sent back down in my opinion, hope we get to see him crack the line up next year .Hope Sather resigns and doesnt let him walk He has good hockey sense and offensive talent along with Dan Byers and Dale Weise!!!

I liked the pick up of Oli Jokinen but if he doesn't show something at the end here you have to go for Marleau in the summer if not Pavel Demitra would be a better fit for Gaborik the guy can pass the puck

I would rather have Olli

than both Demitra and Marleau. Demitra is 35 with a career full of injuries, if you get Demitra you would have to worry about him as much as you do Gabs. Marleau is having a great season yes, but he also plays with Heatley and Thornton…thats a lot of talent and you better believe his numbers reflect playing with that talent.

not to mention marleau is going to be getting 6-7 mil a year off this year.

as for PA he is a great AHL player, doesnt mean he is any good up here, look at alex girouix. i think he is leaving to go to another organization end of this year anyway.

by Michael Gleich on Mar 14, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

doubtful the Rangers can pay him. My guess is that he stays with the Sharks or he goes to a team like the Isles.

by PhxRanger on Mar 14, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i think if the sharks collapse in the playoffs again they might semi-demolish that team. marleau and nabokov are big salaries as FA, along with rob blake they would have around 20 mil if they let them walk. they have to do RFA deals for pavelski and setoguchi, but if they collapse again i expect personnel changes there.

Please; no more bloated veteran contracts

Let’s win/lose with the Kids. Watch the Hawks/Avalanche and see why.

You have to get some real studs though

to do that. Sure, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Colorado, LA are doing it with homegrown talent, but they have Ovechkin, Semin, Malkin, Crosby, Toews, Kane, Statsny, Doughty, Kopitar, etc. We have done well with young players, but we haven’t had a guy break onto the scene for us up front and produce a lot of offense. Del Zotto and Staal are keepers, but we need to draft our own Kopitar, Stamkos, Statsny, Parise, that is capable of getting 80-100 points.

Definitely agree here. Marleau’s value is spike heavily playing with Thornton/Heatley. Before that he didn’t do much. Avoid him like the plague.

Demitra…meh, 4-5 years ago yeah, now, yup, injury bugs. I’m not a big Olli fan, but if there’s nothing else out there…give him a cheap 1 year deal.

PA is a career AHL player, he will never crack an NHL lineup for 50+ games a season. maybe 20-30 due for injuries but not for him beating out another player. Plus PA is 27 getting a bit old dont you think??

by CrazyRangerFan on Mar 14, 2010 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

He’s what we call in baseball in AAAA player. Dominates the minors, but overmatched in the pros.

i liked PA, i think he could stick in the NHL as a third line player on the right team. since the rangers have a glut of third liners he needs a new organization.

as for centers, id prefer neither. marleau will likely be costly and jokinen is another aging center that the rangers definitely do not need, they already own chris drury.

by John Merrigan on Mar 15, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

They have a glut of centers: Dubi, AA, Drury, EC, Boyle, Prospal., Olli. You only need 4. Dubi, AA, and Drury aren’t going anywhere.

I’d like to see them resign EC (18 pts in 36 games and +10), resign Boyle, and let the other two walk.

This team needs another top 6 winger in the worst way. Way more than they need to add a Center, especially given the depth in the prospects is down the middle and not on the wings beyond Grachev and eventually Kreider.

I agree. I like EC. I dont know about Boyle though, they could find a comparable player, or bring up someone from the AHL.

We need a top 6 winger, but I don’t like the idea of signing another high price free agent to fill the position. A naslund type signing would be what I would like to see. 4mil-ish, but someone hopefully a little younger with a smidgen of potential left. Sather should be digging for diamonds, not picking the big quartz crystals off the top of the soil.

by GBK2 on Mar 15, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Boyle is a terrific penalty killer...who seems to have more in the tank, skills-wise.

I only wonder if he can discover it.

Is he easily replacable? Yeah, he is.

But hes been pretty valuable as a 5th PK’er., he’s got good size and he’s young.

I’d like to see them give him another shot. Nothing outrageous….1 yr, 700K, maybe 2 for 1.35m is plenty.

I won’t miss him if they decide against it, but I think he’s still got plenty to develop.

Heck, he has scored 0.53 goals per 60 @ ES this year, more than Olli (0.48).

Plop his ass in front of the net on the PP while we’re at it. At the very least he’ll be a good screen and can tie people up.

LOL. I can't tell you how many times my wife - a non-hockey fan - asked the same question out loud when seeing the monstrosity of Boyle out there.

Reminds me of when Keenan would plant Beuk out there on occasion. Or even Tim Kerr in the days of yore.

Maybe the 2nd unit.

The 1st unit should be Gaborik, Callahan, and Drury up front, MDZ and someone with a shot on the points.

Heh, his point-play on the PP made babies cry. How many SH attempts/goals did we give up with him back there?

Would be optimal to trade Roszival and get somebody who can play the point. Don’t need a cannon, just an accurate low shot. And some competency.

by Caerid112 on Mar 15, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow; EC's a +10? That snuck up on me.

I hope MDZ is taking notes.

Christensen

And in those first 36 games he played almost no minutes in the first 5 to 10 games until he was given a shot. To be honest the main priority I hope we resign besides staal is christensen. Too much talent to let go for a very rare cheap price.

True, it’s really 18 points in 29 games. His 1st 8 games he got 10 or less in 7 of them.

keep EC...

and as people have mentioned in other posts prospal would be good to keep on a 1 yr deal. I think we do need to go after a puck moving #1 center which i think plekanec would fit perfectly. less expensive, younger and moves the puck better than marleau. throw him on a line with gabby and prospal then keep a second line of Dubi-AA-Cally and a third of Dru-EC-Grachev.

by BronxBeliever on Mar 15, 2010 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Combining Sather's FA rep.

with the deal Stajan got from Calgary, I’d be amazed if Plekanec actually goes “cheap.”

tomas is getting at least 5 mil is my guess.

by Michael Gleich on Mar 15, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s not many options in the next few years. Plekanec is one, and he’s UFA next year. Backstrom is RFA…only hope is that Wash won’t be able to afford the 6m or so he’s gonna take with their other big contracts and they’re going to need to re-sign a lot of their role players. They’d be stupid to let him go…but it’d be worth it for a young, established player.

Other than that, the FA list is pretty bare.

NO MARLEAU. Pffft.

I’m all with Smurf on the development of the kids…but how long will it take for them to be producers at the NHL level? Need to do what we can and take advantage of Lundqvist now, while he’s in his prime and playing some great goal.

by Caerid112 on Mar 15, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone screams to stop the FA madness and develop, and then everyone wants to be instantly competitive because we have Lundqvist. Only one is possible without having an incredible tank job to get a top 5 pick (which everyone is also against).

Given the choice, I’m going kid, as you said.. Yes, Henrik is in his prime now, but goalies aren’t Running Backs, they don’t hit 30 and careen off a cliff. There is time to get the kids here, which may be 2 years at best.

i havent looked in a while but

i thought stajans deal was a 3 mil a yr cap hit? i would pay that or a little more for plekanec especially if it meant avoiding marleau

by BronxBeliever on Mar 15, 2010 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

Stajan got 4/14m. Plekanec’s had a much better year.

Plekanec will be cheaper than Marleau, he’s still going to fetch at least 4.5m. With the Sather bump, figure 5-5.5m and an extra 2-3 years on the deal.

So while I like him, I don’t like the idea of Sather signing him.

Theory

Let Prospal and Jokinen walk.

Qualify Lisin and Girardi.

Trade , waive or release Redden

Sign Demtira to an incentive laden, 2 year contract.

Promote kids.

Add a big physical blue liner, a 20 minute guy.

Done.

I’m not up on all of the CBA, i’m pretty sure that there’s no such thing as “incentive laden” in NHL contracts. Demitra’s also 35+, so signing him to a multi-year deal runs the risk of him retiring and getting stuck with his cap hit.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Mar 15, 2010 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Umm…didn’t Naslund retire and his $$$ came off the books…or does it have to happen in a certain time-frame (off-season vs. in-season) for the cap difference?

by Caerid11 on Mar 16, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

he was under 35 when he signed his multi year deal.

by Michael Gleich on Mar 16, 2010 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I would try to sign both Jokinen and Prospal to cheap 1yr deals. If its too little, ok they walk, but both have played well enough ….especially Prospal to come back. I agree with qualifying Lisin and Girardi although I might trade Girardi later on. Demitra? Why? Realease redden, we ain’t gonan be able to trade him.
