one idea for coach if torts does get fired

I've been thinking about this and if tortarella does get fired at the end of the season...who would be a good replacement and one name i thought of was the former Aves and Thrasher coach Bob Hartley. I'm not sure of his reputation around the league but i do know that he had a lot of success with colorado and kinda got a raw deal in atlanta trying to coach that team

It's one idea and I'd love to hear some other suggestions

im kind of tired of recycled coaches. some names i would like:

Paul MacLean who is an assistant in Detroit and has been with Babcock for 7 years.

Also some coaches not in the nhl as minors and juniors guys have proven to be relatively successful when given a shot.

Scott Arniel: runs the canucks AHL team in Manitoba (48)

Bob Boughner: certainly not a shrinking flower who led Windsor to an OHL and memorial cup title last year and might again this year (38)

Rob Murray AHL bruin franchise; Kevin Dineen Portland (Buffalo’s AHL team)

Another name if he wanted to make the jump might be Mike Eaves who coaches our badger boys at Wisconsin.

I agree if Torts was fired(dont want him to be yet) but if he was I would like to start with a fresh name.

All excellent choices - well thought out, as always, MLeetch...

…but – IMHO – this see-saw team needs a proven NHL commodity (versus retread) which – other than McLean – none of the above fit.

The Ulf suggestion below is a solid one. It’s also completely plausible to see Mike Sullivan step in (he seems to have a strong grasp on this team based on what MSG Network displays).

really, how well did the proven commodity of torts go?

Boudreau (Was)
Bylsma (Pitt)
Cory Clouston (Ott)
Davis Payne (Stl)
Scott Gordon (NYI)

all guys who came straight from the AHL and teams have had success since they took over. Isles less so, and Payne just took over.

it’s no guarantee they would succeed but this way hasnt worked. I wouldnt mind a guy like Ulf as he basically ran coyotes camp this year as well. I’m just thinking that we need a guy who has run a show whatever the level so if they can run it and succeed in hockey maybe more so than other sports it translates up at a high rate.

McLellan (SJ) (think he spent a couple years as a Red Wings assistant)

Let me rephrase

By ‘proven,’ I’m referring to SOME stint behind an NHL bench. Not a Hitchcock or Ted Nolan…or Melrose. Rather a headstrong assistant coach who can withstand the glaring lights of Broadway in the midst of roster turnover. The folks you alluded to – in exception to Bylsma, perhaps – walked into rebuilding teams. Expectations were low. They produced well.

With this being said, the outstanding work Boudreau has done is VERY notable. I’m not debating someone of similar ilk would mirror this, rather stating a preference. Renney worked for this team – at least initially – for the reasons I offered above.

You make a fair point, though. For instance, Rick Tocchet is bloody awful down here. Lord knows the Trottier debacle.

Boughner – and Dineen, for that matter – were solid leaders as pros, role players who young’uns would likely listen to. I would be more than content with either.

Pheh. The devil you know argument is guiding my logic. This team’s personality is confounding at the present; I’d hate to throw another variable in there in one testing the coashing waters.

PS I love the honest debates on this site; I feel like I'm at a bonafide sports bar on here.

First round is on mleetch, though. :)

im not necessarily against an nhl assistant but not sullivan cause while he might know the personnel he is part of the group that is getting less than he should out of them. frankly i want someone with no ties to the inner circle of this organization.

Personally i would love to hire Jim Nill the assistant GM in Detroit to be our GM and let him bring MacLean along with him to be the coach. There is not a better run organization with more overall stability and success in hockey to my estimation than the Wings.

Cant believe I forgot Joe Sacco of the Avs on the list of AHL to NHL success.
The problem i see with guys already in the nhl is similar to that of many of our players that the entitlement aspect of it has already taken a hold to an extent and then hunger is not the same as someone out to prove they belong. Tocchet, Trottier, Gretzky all those guys fail as coaches because they dont understand how to teach the game to other guys, they expect it to come as natural as it did to them.

The thought of Gilmour behind an NHL bench makes me giddy

Talk about leading by example.

That's a nice thought

But probably never going to happen with this front office regime. I’d like to see a total youth movement, including the coach. We should be looking for the next great head coach, not the same recycled crap, like you said. It would be nice to have a younger guy to bring some energy to the team (ideally something like Sean Payton and the Saints). I’m sure we’ve all seen how a lack of energy has plagued this team for years.

How about Ulf Samuelson he was supposed to coach the coyotes and was passed over has had experience and knows the atmosphere of New York.

New coach

I like the idea of a younger guy, with a Tippet like system.

Dave Tippet has done great things with Phoenix, and the roster is just now beginning to change.

I'm with you...

Ulfie would be my choice, and he should hire Adam Graves as an assistant.

Okay, seriously...

Hartley is not a bad choice. Not a great choice, either..but, not a bad choice.

I do think, though, (and we know this will not happen) the organization needs a clean sweep. Coach, assistants, and GM all need to go.

I don’t know that I would tab Mark Messier GM, but, I would consider it if other executives weren’t floating out there. It’s time to remake the organization’s hierarchy. And since you can’t fire the owner, will Jim Dolan act like he has a pair, and rid us of the mediocre front office and coach???
