Rebutting the Broad Street Hockey Post "Rangers' Dubinsky shows lack of respect by breaking cardinal fighting rule"

I noticed the post "Rangers' Dubinsky shows lack of respect by breaking cardinal fighting rule" in the Fan Posts on Blueshirt Banter today, and I wanted to take a moment to share my own views of the incident at the core of Travis Hughes post. My understanding was that the cardinal fighting rule was "Guys with visors can't start fights". The only real exception to this, is if the player with the visor is fighting in response to a dirty hit or irresponsible high stick on himself or his teammate. I didn't see any careless stick play leading up to Richards challenge, and I definitely didn't see any dirty hits. So why was Richards and his visor starting a fight in the first place? If he's such a fair fighter, why not remove his helmet before starting a fight, like the last time he challenged Dubinsky unprovoked? Didn't take the helmet off two seasons ago either, although he again is the first to drop the gloves, when Dubinsky challenged him in response to this attempted blindside hit on Chris Drury. Its not just Richards either. Look at this clip of Scott Hartnell and Sean Avery from January. Yes, Avery started it, but as he steps back to square up, rather then removing his helmet, he actually puts his head down, and lowers the visor. Look at the end of the fight, it's down past his nose and almost below his lip. While I understand that the visor has become more accepted over the past few years, I think that it's important that players not hide behind new technology, if they are going to try and play "old time hockey".

Agree completely Buckaroo. The Flyers are a team of cowards and cheapshot artists who ultimately choke. They’ll try to start a fight then hide behind their visor like you said.

And their “Public Enemy #1” Sidney Crosby is a guy who last year was challenged by Savard and called a bitch because of his visor, so Crosby took off the visor and challenged Savard but he declined. So as you said at the end, I think there is a problem in the league where guys try to act and believe that they are tough or “old time” players when they are really just a couple of cowards and some are deliberate cheapshot artists.

Whenever a star player gets his ass kicked fans want to desecrate the ass-kicker’s character. Frankly we did the same thing when Carcillo beat down Gaborik.

I’ve always felt this way about Patrick Kaleta also. Matt Cooke wears one too.

What was it that Avery said way back when?

“I think it was typical of most French guys in our league with a visor on, running around and playing tough and not back anything up. I’d think if a guy like Brett Hull was coming up the middle, somebody probably wouldn’t have stepped up and hit him, but like I said, a typical move from a guy wearing a visor that certainly doesn’t like to get scratched at all.”

I thought that any player who started a fight, or decided to participate in a fight, while wearing a visor, was given an extra 2 minute penalty? Granted, I think helmets should be removed before any staged fight (sometimes one breaks out in the middle of a scrum so it’s kinda hard).

You know what showed how men should fight and who had a pair of brass cajones? Brendan Shanahan against Donald Brazier a couple seasons ago. Shanny said let’s go, he took off his gloves, then his helmet, and went at it with a much bigger man. That’s how it should be done.

Yeah I seem to recall hearing that

But I’ve never seen a penalty for it. It makes sense. If you’re going to fight and you wear a visor, take it off. Someone’s going to get hurt. Uh… well, hurt more.

I kind of feel it is ironic that some yahoo from Philly even opens his mouth about fair play and the Flyers in the same sentence. Please, they are the opitamy of cheapshot artists and thugs and have always been. Richards got his ass kicked and Dubi took an extra shot or two when he was down for good measure….not the end of the world. What surprized me was that Carcillo didn’t get challenged.

by earthworm on Mar 18, 2010 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

He does protest too much...

so take his keyboard away.

Seriously, Brandon Dubinsky did nothing out of the ordinary in his fight with Mike Richards. And, if you saw the flashback of the previous fight between them in Philly, Richards landed a sucker-punch on Dubi when he was wrapped up.

Grow some, and write something worthwhile!

Like I said the other day it will be a cold day in hell before I start taking sportsmanship lessons from Philly

You mean a cold day in Philly?

face shield instigator

I already posted NHL rule 47.6 “an instigator in an altercation wearing a face shield will be assessed an additional unsportsmanlike penalty”.

Also NHL rule 47.2 “a player determined to be both an aggressor & an instigator shall be assessed an instigating minor, a major for fighting. a ten min misconduct (instigator)
,& game misconduct aggressor”.

Neither Richards nor Hartnell received ANY of these penalties.

Thanks, I was sure there was one. The fact those aren’t enforced is a friggin’ joke. Both players should have to remove their lids.

by Caerid112 on Mar 18, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Guys, I don’t think an Instigator minor was assessed in either of the fights you frankiec mentioned, therefore, no penalty for the visor.

Regardless, anyone associated with the Flyers in any way really should not pontificate about “The Code” or dirty play.

What goes around......

……comes back around.

Sorry to hear this about Leighton. On a personal level. Couldn’t be more pleased that it happens to the Flyers’ Organization. Again.

From Twitter and the Official Flyers account:

@NHLFlyers: It’s official: Michael Leighton has a severe high ankle sprain and is out 8-10 weeks, per Paul Holmgren.

They should just put pads on Chris Pronger and tell him to take up space.

What a bunch of whiny ass hats

I laughed my ass off at this.

Hopefully we won’t play down to them and their goon style of hockey again.

As if the Flyers are known for good old fashioned wholesome family fun and skilled hockey players.

IF IT AIN'T THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK!

Hey Buckaroo. I just clicked that link you provided on the Flyers SB Nation blog. What a bunch of crap and a bunch of malarkey that shmuck just typed. If it was the other way around, he would’ve called Richards a hero.

Give me a F’en break. These Flyers fans are a bunch of spoiled sports.

As a Devils Fan...

and as much as I hate the Rangers, I have to for the first time agree with you guys about the Flyers, they will cheap shot anyone but when someone comes around a kicks their ass, they bitch and moan. Dubinsky beat Richards fairly. How bout they anwser why David Booth still hasnt returned from that nasty hit buy Mr.Richards. I think I actually hate the Flyers more now than the Rangers just for being a classless hockey team and their fans.

Didnt Booth return & beat up Richards like maybe 2 weeks ago? Unless he’s been in and out of the lineup w/ post-concussion symptoms.
& thanks, I guess.

I am pretty sure Booth scored the other night. Booth, Weiss, Horton…why does Florida suck so bad?

by earthworm on Mar 20, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

because its like have two callahans and a dubinsky as your top players. thats why they suck.

by CrazyRangerFan on Mar 20, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly I hate the Flyers more than any team in the league, I dont like the Devils but I respect them same with the Isles. But I HATE the Flyers, just a bunch of dirty pieces of Scum. Im glad Dubi messed him up, the only thing better would have been if the refs didnt get involved and Dubi just kept pounding him on the ice.

by CrazyRangerFan on Mar 19, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Noooooooo you hate us more because the Devils have never actually beaten the Rangers in a single game that actually mattered.
