Rangers Analysis: Gaborik's Struggles Not Helping Sinking Rangers

Earlier in the season, Marian Gaborik was contending with Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby for the scoring title in the National Hockey League. Most often, Marian was between first and fifth in scoring in the league, even when the team went through rough stretches. Now, though, several months later, Gaborik has dropped to tenth in scoring with 73 points. Obviously that is not horrible or anything, but when you consider where Gaborik was in November to where he is now in March, there have been some drastic changes in the star winger's game.

I truly believe Gaborik is playing with an injury of some sort. Maybe he is still suffering from the groin issue that acted up while he was in Vancouver for the Olympic Games, or maybe not. We will not be finding out anytime soon, as the coaching staff has such a strict policy when it comes to leaking information to the public. Anyway, if it is an injury from the Olympics, our greatest fear has become reality.

If you watch Gaborik now, and then watch clips of him during a game in November, there is a very noticeable change in his speed and explosiveness. Gaborik's game is built around his superior speed, and when that weapon in his arsenal is not available to him, his entire game will be thrown off. With a groin injury, it would only make sense that he would have trouble skating at top speed, and like I said, I truly feel that is the case.

When Gaborik is not scoring, the New York Rangers are not scoring. This saying may be getting old by now because we have been hearing it over and over again since the start of the regular season, but when you think about it, it adds up. Marian accounts for just under fifty percent of this team's offense afterall.

Star-divide

Now what I find ironic about this is that since Gaborik has returned from injury after the Olympics, the Rangers have once again been haunted by goal scoring difficulties. They were actually scoring consistently while Gaborik was out, but once he came back, they were shutout, and then later struggled to put in more than two per game. It is likely just a coincidence, but there is always a chance that there is a reason behind it.

The only other explanation that I could come up with is that the team so heavily relies on Marian to lead the way when he is in the lineup, and now with his injury, he is not looking as sharp as usual, so basically his mates are relying on a player that is performing at about sixty-five percent. That isn't going to win you games, that is for sure.

Anyway, Gaborik is undoubtedly a crucial player for this team. He is their main guy on offense and has been one of the very few individuals that has been somewhat consistent. Now with that consistency gone, the Rangers are struggling to find secondary scoring; the worst time of the year for that to happen. Now head coach John Tortorella is left juggling the lines once again, trying to find a center for Gaborik. So here we are, six months into the season and there still is not one player on the roster that gels with Gaborik other than Vinny Prospal.

Gaborik has been coasting out there on the ice, he has not been as prolific of a shooter as he was in the beginning of the season, and turnovers have been coming abundant. In a way, Gaborik's injury in the Olympics may just have cost this team a playoff spot, because they are all being dragged down with him.

Hey Nicky, I agree....

It’s painfully obvious that Gabby has a “lower body injury.” As he stated in one of his interviews after the olympics that he is not 100% but it is crunch time and we are trying to make the playoffs. The olympics indirectly hurt the Rangers this year w/Gabby the way they did in 06’ w/ Lundqvist. All in all the season has been considered a success when it comes to Gaborik cuz if you would have told us at the beginning of the year that he would play in at least 90% of the teams games and score around 80 points we all would of jumped up and down. It’s just a damn shame that he fizzled at this time of year. And i do disagree with one of your points that the Rangers were scoring w/ out him in the lineup and now they are not with him back just being a coincidence. Def not a coincidence. This team relied way too much on him to carry the team offensively all year and when he wasnt in the lineup everyone tried that much harder and we all saw the results. There is so much wrong with this team top to bottom. Dysfunctional at best. From Dolan all the way down to whoever sweeps up the locker room at night…….

Sit him for a game or 2.

Let him heal.

Fk it.

I disagree that Gabby’s “hurt them” by coming back, I mean an unbeatable Ryan Miller, some freaky goals agains the Devils, and now this loss against Montreal…I dunno if Gabby’s hurting.

The pussification of the Rangers blue-line, as always, is the problem. Their Bennie Hill induced ability to get the puck out of thier own zone…is the problem. The team-wide problem of not hitting the net with their shots…is the problem.

I dunno if I’d say “Gabby’s fine”, but I would say Gabby’s the least of the team’s worries. Be nice to see him go on a bit of a tear…but it would be nicer to see Wade Redden whack someone across the head with his stick after they run into Hank..you know, let us know he’s there.

Let him heal

The problem is, if it is a groin injury, they don’t heal up in just a couple of days. To be back to 100% would probably require 2-3 weeks with no skating at all — a luxury the Rangers can’t afford now.

if Gaborik is playing at a reduced level he should sit

It is obvious that the Rangers as a team play differently in the lineup when Gaborik plays. And when Gaborik is not scoring, this a not a good thing. They rely on him too much and he doesn’t seem to be able to deliver right now.

It was similar with Jagr as these superstars seem to dictate the states of the teams play.

The Rangeras were doing fine with scoring (4 per game) while Gaborik was out for 4 games around the Olympic break.

Now its disappointing if the team can only lift its game when Gaborik is out, because they should be bringing it every night.

But Torts said he asked Gaborik that he should only play if he can perform at his usual level.: I assume Gaborik was honest – for the sake of the team I hope he was and not trying to play at 50-60%. It onlt hurts the team as a whole.

It’s obvious he’s got something hampering him. If it’s a groin/leg issue, it’s going to affect his skating and shooting a lot.

Early in the season, what I saw from Gab’s goals were quick one timers from the high-slot, and hawking the front of the net for rebounds and slam-dunks. Lately though, there’s been a complete reluctance by most of the team to attack the middle of the ice. I don’t think we’ve even seen an attempted one-timer by Gabby in the high slot in months-he’s been on the perimeter, not finding the soft spots like he does. Some of that’s skating, some of that just seems to be part of the laziness in this team. Same thing with his net-presence; he’s been spending a lot of time (especially on the PP which is why it’s been terrible of late) on the outside, rarely attacking the middle, rarely shooting.

He’s still got more offensive talent at 50% than most of this team at 100. If he is hurt though, I’d rather we shut him down now so he can heal for next season.

And, let’s face it, when we do score goals, they’re usually against teams that are FAR, FAR from being defensive or goaltending juggernauts. The last games we scored 4 or more goals-Thrashers, Pens (Fleury is still streaky and their D isn’t last year’s), Ottawa, Tampa, and the Caps.

Also, to add, teams quickly figured out the Rangers were a one-trick pony. You throw all your defensive effort against Gaborik because most teams know the rest of this team isn’t going to beat you. Especially if you pressure the hell out of Gab’s linemates. Gabs isn’t Jagr who would control the puck and use his strength to shrug off a checker to get a shot on goal. Gabs is a give-and-go guy who like to hand it off and use his speed to get open. If you bottle up Prospal et al., you’ve got a good shot and keeping Gabs off the score sheet.

In my fantasy league, I have formally changed my name to GaboriksLowerBody.

Gotta give him credit for continuing to play when he’s not 100%, but we really do need others to step it up. Maybe Sex Panther will tweak his Finnish nipples and launch into overdrive.

I have a gut feeling

that the combinatin of his desire to play, mixed in with Tortorella is making him ant to play. There is no way Torts isn’t telling him “I know you’re hurt but if you go out and play I’ll give ya all the minutes you can handle.”

Agree

I agree with your write-up, & maybe it’s just me but the VP-EC- Gabby line worked well together, true maybe EC isn’t a 1st line center but that trio was working well, and so was the Cally-Oli-Dubi line. I wish Torts would just put the lines one way and leave them for 3 or 4 games and see if they can gel, then let Drury work on a 3rd line with AA, so that AA is learning from Drury defensively and on face offs.

IMO Torts line up should be this for the remainder of the season:

VP – EC- Gabby
Cally – Oli – Dubi
Drury – AA – Avery
Prust/Lisin – Boyle – Shelly

Staal – Rosival
DZ – Girardi
Redden – Gilroy

Great article Nick, like you said if he aggravated it during the olympics its a case of “worst fears realized”

As long as the Rangers are in contention, Gabby's playing.

I do think there’s concern about his “lower body” injury, but he still has a shot to set career highs in goals, assists, and points. I’d prefer if Torts cut back his ice time a bit if he really is injured, but they can’t shut him down until the Rangers win a postseason birth or die trying.

That being said, I wonder if his durability is an issue. He hasn’t played back-to-back healthy seasons in quite some time, and I wonder if he might be burning out. Then again, he set most of his career numbers in ‘07-’08, so who knows?

by MatthewA on Mar 18, 2010 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

I disagree

With the notion that he is hurt. I do believe that the team is just plain INCONSISTENT.

Tort’s biggest mistake was breaking up what works!

Early part of the season, the lines were as follows:

Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Callahan
Avery-Anisimov-Lisin
Brashear-Boyle-Kotalik

As soon as he broke up the Dubinsky line, the Rangers went from 10-5-1 in October to 6-8-1 in November. Having a bonafide sniper, a power forward, and a set-up man on a solid line wasn’t enough for him…and now…it has cost him the season perhaps, and maybe his job.

I'm sure that Dubinsky's

broken (more like shattered) hand had nothing to do with breaking up the line…..

Respectfully – I have no problem with you (or anyone else, for that matter) disagreeing about whether or not he’s “hurt”. But can you honestly say that he looks the same on the ice – the same speed, the same explosive “gear-change” when skating. the same turning ability?

Most of us see a difference from before he got cut by Hank’s skate to today.
If he’s not hurt, to what do you attribute the difference?

Sad part is I really don’t see this team being any different. Our AHL guys won’t be ready for the NHL, so we’ll re-sign Olli and maybe Vinny, hopefully at least get Staal signed…but it’ll be the exact same thing as every year. Good out of the gate, crap inbetween, then a manic push for the last playoff position.

Add in a Torts who hasn’t gotten this group to be effective at all in even 50% of our games…

Blech.

by Caerid112 on Mar 18, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

That its probably a pretty safe bet that Olli will not be resigned. I think Olli being on the first line has a lot to do with gaborik not scoring, if you notice gaborik has been passing more often than not, he hasn’t been shooting as much as we are used to seeing, it’s kind of like he just wants to get the puck over to olli or prospal all the time.

Personall i’d love to let prospal go and olli go, we have some young centers that need to get time in order to improve their game, time that they just are not getting. Anisimov and dubinsky should be our top two centers unless dubi is moved to a wing in favor of Christensen who has really impressed me.

I am all for the youth movement, and I think it’s time we get the grachev’s up, and possibly even a guy like Stepan can come in and take the third line center duty. Also Brian Boyle has been an excellent player for us, but having prospal and olli and drury clogs the center position and doesn’t allow our young players to grow, which is consistently a problem with our team.
