Blueshirt Banter Turns One!
The process from my inquiring about running the New York Rangersblog here on SBNation to the official launch of Blueshirt Banter on March 19th2009 was actually about four months. SBNation was just starting to grow their hockey coverage in earnest, and (understandably so) they were looking for an established Rangers blog to come to the network and bring a following.
But after being unable to find a match, the powers-that-be at the network agreed to give me the opportunity to be the Managing Editor, my son came up with the awesome logo you see on the site, and Blueshirt Banter was born.
As we crack open the best bottle of champagne $4 can buy to toast our first birthday, I want to take a few minutes to thank the following people:
Note by Joe Fortunato: The true hero here is Jim. He was too modest to add himself but let me tell you that in the eleven months that I have "worked" here I have never met a more compassionate, more caring, or more driven individual. Jim is the reason behind why this site works, he taught me everything I know (and he was smart enough to bring me on). But most importantly he instilled the ideology that we have to care more for the fans of the site, then the site will come along next, and it shows. Thank you. (And thanks for dealing with my awful spelling! I'll learn eventually!)
Ryan McFadden: Although Ryan has gone off to study abroad, and isn't around to contribute much anymore, I'll never forget how he was here for me in the early days of the site when usually we were the only ones commenting on our own stories.
Joe Fortunato: This site would not be where it is today if not for Joe. He's not only a great writer, but I am proud to call him my good friend. I could never, ever, have done this without you Joe, and I am eternally grateful to you. You've been there for me for every up and down this site has had, and I hope you know how much I appreciate it.
Eddie Gieck: I met Eddie because of Joe and our radio show, and we have developed a great friendship to go along with our terrific working relationship. I look forward to many more laughs, Eddie, thanks for always helping me look at the lighter side of things.
Nick Montemagno: Our newest member of the Banter
Rob Luker: Rob came on in the early going as well, and always manages to find different ideas to write about. Thanks Rob!
Laurie Carr: Laurie runs a terrific site of her own, but helps us out with some of the unknown stories from Europe that she is able to translate for us. Thanks Laurie.
Readers Hall Of Fame:JoshNY, KingHenrik, stonecoldcory, FreeBradshaw, rmc235: All of these guys joined the site in the opening days, and have never left. Thanks guys!
To mleetch, dbmaven, DCRanger, 17ToTheRafters, AveryGod, Lunkwill, giantsNYrangers, and all of you who contribute every day, you are all part of the success of this site, and you have my undying gratitude.
Special thanks to James Mirtle, Ed Valentine, and the entire SBNation
Also want to thank my wife of almost ten years, who spends many a night talking to the back of my laptop and never (well almost never, but not as much as she has a right to)complains.
This birthday isn't about us, it's about you guys who have made this site what it is, the best place on the internet to talk Ranger hockey. Here's to many more years of "Bantering", and may we all see another Cup before we are too old to enjoy it! You guys prove to me every day that Ranger fans are the best fans in hockey. My financial situation didn't permit me trips to NY like I was hoping this season, but I promise you, my goal for next season is to knock a few back with as many of you as I can.

Your efforts
and those of the “team” you’ve assembled, attract those of us who “hang out” here.
Speaking for myself only, I came here and stayed because of how well you manage the site and the comments. It’s truly a pleasure to be able to have intelligent conversation without the negative aspects seen at so many other places. While we often disagree – we can do so and still keep things “friendly”.
So – “Thank you” to all of those who help make this site what it is. :-)

before finding this site
i had to deal with reading comments on game stories on the daily news or post websites and its very very refreshing to here actual educated ideas and debates on this team…next to facebook this is my most visited site every day you guys have great stories and always seem to focus on the stuff that reporters and beat writers seem to miss or not want to look at because of their connections with the team…keep up the great work
:-)
How awesome of you to thank me.
It doesn’t seem right to me to complain. Blogging here, while sometimes stressful, makes you happy. Who am I to stop you from doing something that makes you happy? I am your wife and partner, not a warden (despite rumors).
Here is to many more happy years at the Banter!!

ooooh hot prison warden sex …… just kidding ….
believe me, being a Rangers fan is somewhat similar to a prison sentence, especially years like this one, lol

All hail Jim
Jim took a chance and now has created the go-to blog for the Rangers on the web. Level headed, dedicated, and above all wise; SB Nation found a diamond in the rough.
Now if only I could think of stuff to contribute on a regular basis, eh Jim? I still remember discussing playoff coverage for the first couple weeks of the blog between you, me, and Joe ha ha.
Thanks to all the readers as well, you make this place !

Congrats....
Thanks for all your efforts in making this a great place to hang out and the FIRST place I come for Ranger news. While my hectic schedule has limited my ability to regularly post to short periods of intense activity followed by long periods silence, I’m always lurking nearby because the staff & membership provide the BEST Ranger content on the web. My best to everyone at the Banter!
p.s. – Jen sure sounds like a keeper! Congrats on that too!

Happy Birthday
Where’s the cake? I’m hungry.
Best Rangers site on the Web. Bar none.
I think I’ve read every single post from the beginning of the site. Jim, Joe, etc are terrific writers with a great blend of humor, knowledge and hard work (in no particular order).
Here’s to many more years of banter at, well, The Banter! Cheers, guys.
I visit bascally 4 websites a day and this is always the second site I visit, only second to facebook of course lol.

Thank you guys
Hey guys I’m a fairly new member. Been reading the blog everyday or so since early in the season. I just called in live to the radio show the other day, but it’s grey to have this community available. I sincerly thank you for your hard work, and look forward to all our future bantering

Great site - for many years to come.
It’s a pleasure to come on here and read intelligent analysis by Jim, Joe, and fans who are knowledgeable and care.
I have one request: I don’t know if you did this last spring because I wasn’t aware of this site yet, but I hope you do the same sort of betting pool for each round of the playoffs that you did for the Olympics…that was alot of fun.
Thanks Jim and Joe
I found this website in June of 09 & have been hooked ever since. congrats and lots of luck for the future guys.

Thanks and Congrats
First off, I would like to congratulate Jim and Joe, because they are the ones that got the party started here on Blueshirt Banter in the early going last season. I remember reading some of the first articles and enjoying the writing. By the time summer came around, the community grew and all of a sudden this site began earning the title of the best on the net for Rangers coverage.
With that being said, I would also like to thank Jim and Joe for allowing me to become one of the writers here on Blueshirt Banter. I started running my own site, Rangers Tribune, in January of ’09 and would share some of my articles via fanpost here every once in a while. Apparently Jim and Joe liked what I brought to the table, because by November of 2009, I was writing for both Rangers Tribune and Blueshirt Banter.
It has been a blast, especially working with Jim and Joe, who always find a way to make me laugh in every conversation we have away from the site. It has been a great working with them, but what has most impressed me is the fan community here.
You guys, the readers/fans, are incredible. Without you, the site would be nothing and I would also like to thank you. Whether you agree with me or not, and whether I comment back or not, I always love reading your feedback.
Blueshirt Banter is the best!

Of course I wasn’t mentioned by you bastards but thats ok….the hell with you ! But seriously you guys should be so proud of yourselves for putting out the greatest NY Ranger coverage available..I stumbled on to your show and website last June and I’m so glad I did….I’m hooked now and I feel like part of the family and you won’t be able to get rid of me……“.Blueshirt Banter is the best”……Once again Congratulations boys !!!
Whats truly amazing is the dedication given by Jim, Joe and all of the other writers....
Keeping this website fresh and up to date is hard work. And I know i can speak for all the readers out here when I say thank you. Thank you for being so informative and entertaining and most of all passionate, cuz it’s that passion that makes this site what it is……..but then again I wouldnt expect anything less from die-hard Ranger fans! Theres a reason why BB is my homepage. Great writers, great readers……great fans…………And heres to “US” making the playoffs………LETS GO RANGERS!!!!

Well, we wouldn’t be Rangers fans if we didn’t throw in a little bit of self pity, would we?

As I’ve declared from the rooftoops, hands down the best sports blog out there, period.

YOU make this site, not us. Remember that

No need to thank me. (Although being in the BSB HOF sounds nice)
It is I who should be thanking you guys who work hard everyday to make this site what it is today.
So Congratulations guys. Thank you. Here is to the future of the Banter!

Thank you
I’m a new guy to hockey and a pretty new Ranger fan (got into it in college in PA). Unfortunately, I’m in enemy territory (Pittsburgh) and get almost exclusively disparaging comments about the Rangers. Except here of course, where people do not run the Rangers down, rather than just be brutally honest about their opinions and coverage of the team. Thanks a lot guys, I hope you bring in more fans…we’ll get the numbers.
I really enjoy this site! It is nice to converse with intelligent fans and read articles and comments by people who know and care about the Rangers like I do. It’s great to commensurate during the games as well lol. Thanks!
