My Plans for Next Season

Let grachev continue to develop in the minors. Give him another year.

Dump redden completely. Roszival i can deal with, but Redden i simply can not.

Dump redden, let jokinen, shelley, and lisin go, bring up byers, and resign prust and auld for the same salary. Keep voros as an extra forward.

Then resign staal for 3 mil (3 years), and girardi for 2 mil (2 years) and make a FA splash by bringing in volchenkov for 4.5 mil (we need him badly).

Then have an open competition on defense to see who earns the last 2 spots. most likely mdz and gilroy/sangs. For intensive purposed ill say gilroy wins. That leaves us with 7.815 mil.

Id resign prospal for 2.25 mil. Reaslitically hes going to command atleast that much. I wouldnt go over that to get him, but he is very important to our team. I would sign a veteran dman for 1 mil also. We lacked that this year. That leaves us with 4.566 mil. Than id either resign EC or bring up stepan to be our 3rd line center. Lets say that leaves us with 3.3 mil

_______ prospal gaborik
anisimov dubinsky callahan
avery christensen/stepan drury
byers boyle prust
voros

staal girardi (those two are great together)
volchenkov mdz
roszival gilroy/sangs
vet. dman

henrik
auld

So 3.3 mil to maybe bring someone in to play as a top 6 forward. Theres Frolov, who has 46 pts in 68 games. Theres Matthew Lombardi, who has 46 pts in 67 games, and theres Ponikoravsky, who has 45 pts in 68 games. It would be great if we could bring in a 50pt+ player for 3-4 mil.

That team would do us well for 1 season, while we wait for drury and rozi's contracts to finish off. what do you think?

I like what you are saying with the exception of Shelley. We gave Colton Orr away, this guy is the closest we are going to come to getting that kind of presence back and he is inexpensive. Why would you give up on Lisin? i know he is not getting ice time but I would not let him walk….maybe include him in a package deal, but not walk for nothing. In the remote likelihood Prospal can be resigned for a slight increase, I’d jump at that. thats your 50 point player. If Ollie could be signed cheap, I’d also sign him. We need gritty players with heart. Lombardi may be that…Frolov is not. We are not getting Volchenkov, i don’t see Sather spending a ton of cap on a defenseman seeing as how two are biting us on the ass now. If you dump redden and give Rozi away….you clear up a lot of room……re sign the players you need to like Staal…….maybe Girardi too…..what do you have left…….could you make a run at Kovalchuk…and before anyone says he is a cancer, Jagr was said to be one too……..a player as talented as Kovalchuk comes around once in a decade, you have to seriously consider adding him if possible……he is not a Gomez, he is not a Drury…….you know what you are getting with him…..at least 40+ goals a season for the next 7 or 8 yrs maybe…and you add a 1 /2 punch that maybe only Pittsburgh has in Crosby and Malkin. Is that worth 7.5 million per? I hate to actually say yes, but, for us, a team that can’t score, it is.

I think Lisin is a pretty safe bet to leave for the KHL next year. He got jerked around a lot by Torts despite a good work ethic and he could probably get more money in his homeland.

yeah im pretty sure as long as torts is here, lisin is not.

and i think kovalchuk will be a lot more than 7.5.. i say hes signed for about 9. id rather sign 2 players worth 4.5 to play with gabby, but thats me personally.

Yea Kovie is seeking a max contract and if he stays in the NHL I bet he gets something closer to 9 too, the Rangers aren’t one player away and handing out a deal like that to another player would be crippling.

i agree. we have a lot of holes. i much rather sign a 1st line center for 5 mil and a solid dman for 4.5, instead of bringing kovy in.
