Rangers Recap: Rangers Playoff Hopes Go Down the Drain as they are edged by Bruins, 2-1
The New York Rangers apparently do not desire to participate in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs based on the sub-par effort displayed this afternoon in a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. The players can tell you that they still believe, they can tell you they have what it takes, but the fact is that they could not get up and play in a game seven atmosphere this afternoon, which is a tell-tale sign that they do not have what it takes. They do not have the heart, or the desire, and because of this their playoff hopes have been crushed.
An entire season, seventy-one games, was played by this team before today, and all of those games came down to this one single contest in Boston. It was do or die for this team, otherwise they would likely not make the playoffs. Taking these conditions into consideration, you would think that John Tortorella's hockey club would be able to come out and play some desperate hockey. Well, once again they surprised us and came out flat in the most important game of the season. The bottom line is that they do not deserve to make the playoffs, because apparently they just do not care.
The way in which the Blueshirts started this game was comical. Henrik Lundqvist was forced to stand on his head while the rest of the team stood around dumbfounded. That scene right there is a microcosm of the Rangers season; letting their goaltender do all of the work while they stand around and hope for the best. I am surprised Lundqvist has yet to explode.
The second period may have been even worse than the first, not being able to get a single shot on goal during a four-minute powerplay. The powerplay has been bad this season, there is no question about that, but it has never been this bad. No shots with a man advantage for four minutes. This goes back to what I was saying about not caring and having no desire.
On Satan's goal, yet again, the players stood around and watched the play develop, giving Henrik Lundqvist no help.
After Dennis Wideman's backhander beat Lundqvist high in the third to give the B's a 2-0 lead, the Blueshirts responded with a goal by Michael Del Zotto, his eighth of the season. Then, like the Rangers always seem to do, they showed desperation in the final two minutes but came up short of the comeback. It was too little too late at that point, and the final Bruin clear that got past Rozsival sent head coach John Tortorella jumping up and down in rage on the bench like a little toddler when they are told they cannot get the toy they want at the toy store.
I am not even going to go into specifics about this game because right now, it is more about the season as a whole. When you think about what we have learned about this team this year, only negative thoughts seem to pop into your mind. They are inconsistent, soft, lazy, non-caring, pathetic, cannot score, and do not know how to play defense while playing offense at the same time.
As Joe Fortunato of Blueshirt Banter said yesterday in his article, this season is over. It is over whether the Rangers make the playoffs or not, because you aren't going very far with efforts like this in the postseason. It is almost like nothing anyone does can motivate this hockey club and nothing can get them going. For example, they were being hit constantly in today's game, and it did not increase their urge to win or adjust their attitude. They just accepted it and did nothing about it.
The New York Rangers do not deserve to make the playoffs, and nothing they do in these last ten games is going to change my mind about that. There are so many other teams like the Thrashers and Hurricanes that want a spot in the playoffs much more badly than the Rangers do, and quite honestly, I rather see those teams playing in April than the Rangers.

Couldn't agree any more!
Ive watched this team religiously for the past fifteen years, im 25, and im not sure when the last time ive seen a team with NO heart or desire!! For the last half of the season, ive watched the games in fast forward, knowing that after they surrender the first goal or two, it wud take until the late third period to actually do something….at least when Sather arranged the “$100 Million Lackluster Allstar Team,” we all knew why they had no heart, cuz they were making at least 7mil per, and didnt want to ruin their huge contracts…too bad baseball sux till August, cuz it’s going to be a longgggggggg summer!!
any word
on cally’s injury??? the season is over but id like to see him play out these last ten games…at least he shows some heart
I don’t agree with most of this. Anyone who believes that they understand the psychological state of a team based on what they see in 60 minutes of a game is deluding themselves. No one here – to the best of my knowledge – has direct access to the locker room or even indirect access to the players. So if you think you’re an armchair psychologist and can judge the state of the team – great. I don’t buy into armchair psychology.
I see plenty of effort – completely counteracted by all of the physical faults that we’ve discussed to death for months.
But you know what ?
I don’t care!!
This was an even better start to the last 12 games than I could have ever hoped for. And now the NYR have a real chance at getting into the ‘bottom 5’ positions in the standings and being eligible for a lottery pick. I only hope they make it there and get at least the #3 overall pick.
I only hope that Callahan’s injury isn’t significant enough to require surgery or a long rehab. Better to sit him out for a couple games rather than risk any serious long term issues.

i agree db, but theres other aspects that weren’t included. You said that you see effort, i do aswell. Is it constant? Usually no, infact they give it up faster than Jim’s wife(sorry man! lol). Thats the only assessment fans can give because we are on the outside. We can only judge base on what we are shown. Its impossible to know whats going on in the locker room and theres only so much a coach can say. If the message wasn’t clear in the first 10 games of the season, it sure as hell is 71 games in. Whether the players are listening to whatever it is hes saying is their problem not his. Its unfortunate that we were given this team combination by our CEO, but its definitely time for Torts to realize theres 11 games left and theres no reason to keep beating a dead horse.
I just really hope they start giving the third and fourth lines more time … play the guys not making 4 or more million a year

I'm glad they lost.
I dunno that its quite “over” yet, cuz of course they could still squeak in as they’ve done before. I hate to say it about my team…but I hope they don’t. I’d rather see them lose the rest of the games to be honest.
I’m indifferent on Torts. I think bringing in a new coach is gonna take more time to learn a new system…then again, its not like Torts system has produced anything.
Should be an interesting offseason..tho of course I’ll pay attention throughout.

i see some effort on the ice…but i don’t see structure or discipline…theres no team effort…the team looks really lost and i don’t know how or why this happened…remember the first 8 games of the season, where they smothered the other teams on the defensive end, got the turnover, and then started their counter attack…they had the system down once but now its all gone…i’m just wondering where it went
Can our game recaps become a little less morbid in the coming weeks? I feel like every time we lose the headline is something along the lines of “playoff hopes slipping away..Rangers don’t care” I no longer feel the need to be repeatedly reminded of how much this team sucks, I figured that out for myself about 5 months ago. There’s no sense dwelling on this season, I for one am excited to see how far we fall in the standings, having a top 5 pick would be sweet. A lot of these guys aren’t going to be here next year anyway so I don’t really feel the need to get hung up on their “effort” or “lack of heart.”
Understand your frustration, but we have an obligation to our readers (not to mention a mandate from SBNation) to recap every game.

No problems with the recaps, I’m just sick of every game being descried as the game that put a dagger in our playoff hopes when in reality, this team was never good enough to make the playoffs.
Also I don’t think it’s right to accuse this collection of spare parts of not caring, and having a lack of heart when pointing to why they keep losing when the actual answer is more along the lines of; they’re not winning because they’re a collection of spare parts.
They are soft
Its one thing to lack talent its another to be soft. I watched them skate in the slot all day instead of taking the puck to the crease. No one goes to the net except for Avery and sometimes Prust. There is a complete lack of toughness on this team and its disturbing. The toughest defenseman is MDZ by a big margin – a 19 year old. One of the best things they can do is let Girardi walk, it is shameful what he let Carcillo do to Gaborik.
R I P
I have been watching the Rangers for over 40 years and I cant remember a Ranger team giving a worse effort than they have given the last few weeks.Yes we have a few bright spots, but who are we kidding, this team was never ready to compete from the get go.We can all blame Torts but this team was put together by you know who and he should be held accountable, but he won’t be.We put our eggs all in one basket when we were going to count on Higgy and Ales to be offensive weapons and it backfired in our faces.Lets just play out the string, wait for the draft, and get a fresh start next year. But lets not forget,a few of these players have quit on Torts and this has to be addressed.
tortellini's system ...
is clearly not working with a little over a full season under his belt with this team. i kinda feel that renney’s system was a good system but had the wrong puzzle pieces, and same thing with torts’ system, he has the wrong puzzle pieces now for the system he wants to run. the players we have now are more suited for a renney system.
i say torts is close to being done. when he is shown the door, i say bring keenan back. after all he does have a rangers stanley cup under his belt.
Tort's does have the wrong pieces...
… for his system which is why he abandoned it in November. He recognized early on this team was ill-equipped to play his “safe is death” system and switched to a “middle-of-the-road” approach – which of course – led nowhere. I give him credit for recognizing so early the teams short-comings but he’s been totally unable find a way through. Good coaches can find different ways to win, he has not been able to. The team is flawed but he still shoulda gotten more out of them (IMHO) I was originally a Tort’s supporter but am rather ambivalent now.

Can you fellas finally change the tagline
of Blueshirt Banter to “Anxiously awaiting this year’s fall to a lottery pick”?
Ok so I JUST got done watching this game after having to dvr it..............
I wish I didnt. You know it’s not always about a lack of effort…..even though it sometimes is. Todays game wasnt about a lack of effort. The St. Louis game wasnt about a lack of effort. The Montreal game was. This team goes back and forth. They try, they dont try, they try, they dont try….the one constant?……they are NOT A GOOD TEAM. This team has no cohesion. No consistency from the players which in turn leads to no consistency from Torts and his line combinations. There is no true definition as to what the Rangers are….no identity. no defined roles from the players. This is a bad team that hopefully one day starts to get better. it’s been a very long season boys and I for one am almost happy it’s over. how much more can we take. These feelings I am left with after terrible losses like these will not be missed. Lets look forward to a good draft and please, please some1 take the check book away from Sather…………..please cuz july 1st is coming.

Let's give the kids a whirl.
White flag waving, why not see what Hartford has in store for us…? Let’s let Zaba, Johnson get some more starts, likewise Sangs, Grachev, Locke, Heikkinen get some playing time.
Give our veterans a rest and/or shut some down for the season. I hope Callahan is fine, but see no logic in testing for meaningless games in the standings. Let’s let ones on the fence play for contracts next year…or at least showcase their skills for others.

The problem is that with the additions they made at the trade deadline, HFD is now at the limit for veterans – so nobody can be sent down.
WIth the NHL roster limits, that means, barring injury (and placement on Long Term Injured Reserve), nobody can be called up.

Just got back from NCAA Norwich vs. St Norbit up in Lake Placid on Saturday night. It went to the last 35 seconds of double overtime. Like the Rangers and Boston, 2 teams that struggled to score, only the heart was through the roof. In a display Lundqvist would have admired, St. Norbit’s goalie absolutey stood on his head. I’d love to know how many shots he blocked. After this season, you can all imagine how refreshing that was to see, after so much Ranger dreck. I had no rooting interest. (other than the underdog) and I couldn’t have been happier just to watch hockey played with passion. Looking forward to the playoffs without the Rangers and will be curious to see how they retool in the off season. PS Torts angry brat/bully style has wron really thin on me after a full season of it. grow the fuck up already and act like a professional or go coach a rock.
