Rangers GameDay: Coming On? Or Another Big Come-On?

The Rangers have won two in a row.

They are coming off a big emotional win in a game they desperately had to have. Right now they feel pretty good about themselves.

Stop me if you've heard all of this before. If you've been paying attention all year, you have.

In the last four weeks, we've gone from being a playoff contender to a possible lottery pick to a playoff contender to a possible lottery pick to a playoff contender. It's like riding a rollercoaster, but you are sitting in between Kathy Griffin and Carrot Top. It hasn't been a fun ride.

I've been a Ranger fan a long time, and I can tell you that even though this has been on of the toughest seasons I can remember, and even though it could stunt the growth of the franchise for the future, I still want them to make the playoffs. What can I say, always the optimist.

That being said, I'm not convinced by what I've seen the last two games. It's going to take a lot more than beating up a bad Islander team and a good win over the Devils to convince me that they're truly making a comeback. Unfortunately, we've been on this ride before.

Last 10 -- New York 4-5-1; Toronto 7-3-0

Season series --
This is the third of four meetings. The Rangers took the first two, but the last game between the teams took place Oct. 17.

Big story -- Just when you think the Rangers are out, they pull themselves back in. A dominant performance against the Islanders and a come-from-behind win in New Jersey have pushed the Rangers to within three points of the eighth-place Boston Bruins. But don't sleep on the Leafs, who have won 4 of 5 despite having the worst record in the Eastern Conference. Not that teams ever lose on purpose, but without a first-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, the Leafs have no incentive to lay down over their final eight games.

Team Scope:

Rangers -- Trailing 3-2 to the Atlantic-leading Devils on the road with less than 30 seconds to play, it looked like the Rangers were sinking deeper into the quicksand that has been their season. But Chris Drury tied it with 17 seconds remaining, and the Rangers emerged with a shootout win that was a pure season-saver.

But even after they turned zero points into two points, they've still got a big hill to climb. And Rangers coach John Tortorella knows it.

"There's no sense of feeling pressure now," he said. "If we lose games with so little left, you're done. We've talked as a group. Lots of people poked holes in us and rightfully so. We've had an up-and-down season but we've stayed within ourselves and have kept fighting."

Maple Leafs -- This is a team that embodies the term "playing for pride." They have a better chance of seeing a unicorn than a postseason berth, but it hasn't stopped them from putting forth a strong effort since the Olympic break.

In a road game against the Atlanta Thrashers, a team in the thick of the playoff race, the Leafs fought their way to a 2-1 overtime win Thursday. So don't expect the Leafs to do the Rangers any favors.

"We've been finding ways to win hockey games," said defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who was a Calgary Flame the last time Toronto faced New York. "We don't care if takes 60 minutes or 65, and that's a good sign. We know we can be better, but with saying that every game is not going to be a perfect one. We'll take the two points."

Who's hot --
Rangers rookie defenseman Michael Del Zotto has 2 goals and 3 assists in his last three games. … Leafs sniper Phil Kessel has 7 goals in his last 7 games, and goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who will start Saturday, has won six straight.

Injury report --
The Rangers may be without winger Ryan Callahan, who aggravated a leg injury against the Devils on Thursday. He will likely be a game-time decision. … Defensemen Mike Van Ryn and Mike Komisarek are out for the season and haven't been big factors this season in Toronto.

Stat pack --
Four of the Rangers' last six opponents are currently out of playoff position. … Kessel has been limited to 1 goal and 2 assists in 11 games against Rangers.

Puck drop --
"We responded well. We didn't panic, we didn't give up." -- Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, after the Rangers' 4-3 shootout win against the Devils on Thursday.

For the absolute best coverage of the Leafs on the net, make sure you stop over to Pension Plan Puppets, Julian and Chemmy and their crew do a fantastic job.

They win they lose, they win they lose. We give up, but then they suck us back in. The bottom line is that they cannot afford a single loss.

i've been watching this team since 1979

and i want them to fall into a lottery pick

a four game sweep at the hands of the capitals serves no purpose, better to land another solid prospect and address the numerous roster issues in the off-season

based on merit, this team doesn’t deserve to be there

This from a man who thinks the plural of goose is sheep.

Regarding the story headline -good question- damned if I know the answer

I think they’re “coming on” (they don’t have a choice if they have playoff aspirations), but who the hell ever knows with this team?? 5 days ago I had them dead and buried. Problem is, they’ve put themselves in a position where there’s now little-no room for error.
I have to admit, I agree with joereiter… I never truly WANT the Rangers to lose, but a possible shot at a top prospect is (was?) enticing and in the long run probably more beneficial to this team than squeaking into the playoffs and likely getting crushed. (although now it seems the chances of getting a lottery pick have gone by the boards with the recent wins over the Isles and Devils). Fighting to get into the postseason just seems like leading the lambs to the slaughterhouse.

Also - remember

that this is a radically different Leafs team than when we last saw them.

Kessel is back from IR and is doing what Phil Kessel does.
The trade(s) at or near the deadline changed the entire look of this team.
They’re playing with added grit, more scoring, and attitude – they want to set the stage for next season (and they’ve said words to that effect themselves).

I think the Rangers will end up splitting the 2 games left with TOR. With no Callahan, I suspect this one will be the loss.

Great. Gilroy is more solid defensively than several of the others – I won’t bother mentioning names, it’s pointless.

Commenting on Twitter yesterday on Eriksson’s call-up – Laurie Carr of Beyond the Blueshirts had this to say:

And not for nothing, but Erikkson’s been brutal in Hartford. Hopefully he’s just here to scare the current six into improved performances.

yes, but also shows why losses are good so they cant make these BS moves to out of desperation get older and try and make the playoffs. I mean look at it this way if we leave Shelley-AA-Prust together tonight cause they were our best line the other night we have PA and Voros in our top 9 forwards.

seems like this would be the formula tonight.

Dubi-Christensen-Gabby

Prust-Anisimov-Shelley

Staal-Rozy
Del Zotto-Girardi
Redden-Eriksson

So now you take Aves who has been one of your top forwards of late and stick him with Olli who has been ur worst forward. Then you take Eriksson who is slow and as Laurie said has been brutal in Hartford and stick him with Redden. maybe the lotto isnt out of reach.

Interesting, isn’t it?
Gilroy gets called out for what amounts to “poor defensive play”.

Meanwhile, the guy who seems to be always on the ice for a goal against lately is the 6.5mm-Dollar-Man. And the other rookie is like a minus-70.

I don’t get it.

If the kid is worn out because he’s not used to a long season – say it. That’s a fine reason to sit him. Actually, with some PLANNING, it would have be a fantastic reason to carry a 7th defenseman and spell him along the way…. oh – wait….I used that dirty, nasty “P”-word….

but even if it is his defensive play that is why you are benching him there is no reason to throw the kid under the bus like that…blame it on the long season and give him the night off to watch no reason to further break his confidence.

Torts

I’ve had my days where I like torts and days where I want to run him outa ny as bad as sather. I just want to lay this out there cause it’s really getting to me, what torts is doing with our rookies, gilroy, DZ, AA, is horrible. He sits gilroy when as said above he’s played at least good not great but there are nights when he does great and nights where his D is off. It happens to everyone, DZ it really looks like nobody has tried to improve his D he’s constantly out of position but I’m not getting on him he’s young, and besides I never hear torts talking about how we have to lock up on D. He’s always saying we have to Learn when to go and when not to. To pinch or not to pinch! How about talking about tightening things up rather than expecting so much offense from our blue line when it’s awful! Lastly AA the kid needs more time, point blank. He looks lost our there and he never seems to look like he has confidence, besides lately on the 4th line. I can see how he has some on that line bc he knows he’s the most talented one on the ice In a blueshift uniform. All in all all of our rookies regressed this season. Besides this late coming of AA doing good take this back two weeks ago they all have regressed substantially. It just makes me angry how is any of our rookies going to progress when they are getting benched, only play on the pp (DZ I mean the kid plays 15 mins a game and 8 mins on the pp where’s his defense I mean he is a defender) and AA he’s just that gifted that I don’t have to explain myself I’ll jus say he needs more time. I wonder sometimes how Vinny did so well under torts I feel like he hates everyone that doesn’t have at least 82 games in a blueshirt.

Well you can't have both.....

Ranger fans seem to forget that you HAD a coach who could develop the younger players and teach them but most screamed and yelled to get rid of him. Everyone wanted a coach who would make the veterans accountable, that would get rid of the sense of entitlement. Well now you got him, a guy with ONE CUP in 8 years with TB. Feel free to throw in a silver medal from the recent olympics if it pleases you. Let’s not forget he won that one year with players in their prime, who were ready, who knew how to win. It took him 4 years to get there. He’s not the type of coach that minces words (obviously) and he’s not a hand-holder.

by jmaz25 on Mar 27, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

it would be different if he was actually holding the veterans accountable.

by Michael Gleich on Mar 27, 2010 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL....

Very true Mleetch….well he did for one game with Redden. Oh and Avery for two games this year and one in the playoffs last year. He runs a tight ship…lol

by jmaz25 on Mar 27, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

This is so true.

The problem, I suspect, is that his hands are tied.

What Mr. Tortorella needs to learn how to do – keep his “sound bites” to himself.

Without really knowing the situation, he stormed in and loudly (and very publicly) proclaimed that the “entitlement mentality” would be gone, that mistakes from rookies would be tolerated as they learned and grew, but those same mistakes would not be tolerated of veterans, etc. etc. And thus were our expectations as fans and regular followers of the NYR set.

Reality, however, intervened in a most peculiar and uncomfortable way.

The only veteran truly benched was Ales Kotalik. I daresay it wouldn’t have taken a genius coach in their prime to bench him.
Redden sits for one game. In the meantime, he’s consistently “weak on the puck”, makes poor decisions, and makes mistakes that are hard to tolerate even from a rookie.
Rozsival could’ve been renamed "ROAST"ival for all the grief people were giving him for his poor play – yet he was never scratched. He sat one period of one game – big friggin’ whoop.
We’ve gone down the list time and again – I won’t bother doing it again.
In the meantime – Gilroy was demoted to HFD at one point, and is now scratched – yet he’s on the PLUS side of the plus/minus, and consistently shows good or decent positioning on defense. Yes he makes mistakes – but they’re not anywhere near as egregious as the ones Redden or DelZotto (Mr. Minus 22) make. “Bench him”.

Dear Coach – if you’re going to make blistering pronouncements of what is and isn’t going to be “tolerated” – either have the cojones to step it up yourself and follow through – or publicly retract the statements. Even speaking in “code” would work – “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we haven’t been able to make the accountability thing work as well as we’d have liked. It’s still a goal, a work-in-progress – but for the time being we’re going to have to live with some other-than-ideal situations”.

New Yorkers can tolerate a lot – we’ve lived through some horrible NYR teams, some even more horrible NYKnicks teams, some excruciating seasons by the Mets, Jets, Giants, Metrostars/Red Bull…..
one thing we don’t deal well with is bullshit. We can smell it from the other side of the GW Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel. Man up – or STFU – you can’t have both. We’ll respect you more if you “man up”.

I can’t stand the guy. I firmly believe we went from one extreme to the other, from Renney to Torts. I’d rather have someone in the middle. Any suggestions?

Probably lots of suggestions – but IMO not worth talking about right now – Torts will be back next year. I even think he’s entrenched for next year if Sather “retires”.

DB, what makes you so convinced of that? Is this based on things you know personally or should I wait till you feel it’s a worthy topic of conversation? lol

by jmaz25 on Mar 27, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL!

I don’t have any inside info – just piecing together bits and pieces of things I read, hear, etc.
Example – PaulyD, who has a BlogtalkRadio show just like BlueshirtBanter Radio – had Nicky Fotiu and Ron Greschner on as guests last week. Nick flat out said that Tortorella was not Sather’s choice as coach. What he didn’t say (clearly because he wasn’t comfortable saying it) was who made that choice. You sort of have to read between the lines and figure that it “came from above” – which means it was either Hank Rattner or Jim Dolan.
So – when you put all the little bits and pieces together, I come to the conclusion that Torts is here going forward. I freely admit I could be reading the tea leaves incorrectly.

I know it’s find a coach that is great at all facets of the game, but my point was I cannot see any coach developing rookies worse than torts. If there is I would love to know one it would probably make me feel better.

And yes, I was listening the night also when I believe YOU made mention of that. Thought it was a nice little piece of inside info. Scary thought is now we, or at least I, know baby Dolan gets involved when he wants. I hate to say it….lol..but I think you’re…rrrrr….rrrr….right. lol
